We were visiting a nearby town with not quite as much to offer in the way of "nicer" restaurants. We picked this restaurant based on reviews and for the most part, it will do. I just didn't think it was all that. The best part about the restaurant was the attentive service and the ambience. The steak was okay ... not the best in the world, and I know my husband can do better; and if he had access to a grill and a reputable butcher probably would have tried. The salad bar was adequate. Don't get me wrong. It's huge, but it's not the most diverse salad bar in the world. What did turn me off about the salad bar was the fake lettuce leaves crammed between the bins of various vegetables and salad dressings. The other problem was I was eating amongst cowboys and they aren't exactly the neatest at the chow trough. There were jalapenos in the creamy italian dressing ... I guess it just "fell in there". The brownie dessert is definitely big enough for about 4 people to enjoy a decent bite. The Kentucky pie was a little "tough" -- I expected more gooey. Good parking available, but we also went around 5pm before the dinner rush came through. Flies were all over the parking lot and restaurant structures. My husband had the house steak and was not too pleased with it. Smelled like bad meat. Nothing special about the place. Baked potatoes seems overcooked and tasted like they've been sitting for a while. The salar bar came with our meals. Salad bar was pretty good... Typical salad bar. I initially ordered the swordfish, but they ran out. I ordered the fettuccine with chicken. It was ok... nothing to rave about. Went there with family for youngest son's 21st birthday. Enjoyed the meal. Food was very good except for the $12 bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp. I don't buy this often because of the cost. There are only 5 shrimp on the skewer. Usually these have been very good whenever I have gotten them, however, this time they were burnt. I didn't complain to the waitress or manager because my daughter and her boyfriend were there and they both work at the restaurant. I will probably not order those again for quite some time. I came here on the 4th of July in the evening to grab some food at the salad bar. The restaurant was beautifully illuminated with lights on the inside and outside. Staff was was very professional and had etiquette on the same level as a fine dining restaurant.. The salad bar is extremely clean and well kept. It's not messy, and servers and cooks are constantly reloading more food as needed. For $9.59 (after tax) they give you a square styrofoam to-go box, a cup for soup, and a small plastic container for salad dressing. You can comfortably fit a ton of salad, salad toppings, a side pasta salad, and fruit. The salad bar items are similar to other Cattle Baron restaurants and provide spinach salad, a romaine and iceberg lettuce wth veggies salad mix, Italian/bleu cheese/ranch/jalapeño ranch etc dressings, pasta salads, olives, cheese, cottage cheese, banana pudding, banana bread, pineapple, strawberries, chicken tortilla soup, vegetable soup and much more! read more

We just went up to the bar and order our food there, because of the wait. The bartender was pretty good. We order the Cajun popcorn shrimp there wasn't any thing cajun are the shrimp witch sucks but the shrimp tasted really good. The place seemed really prices so we ended up getting a couple burgers, I got the ol smokey bbq, there wasn't much flavor to the buger and the bbq sauce was non eventful for my taste buds, and then mash potatoes had no gravy or butter on them. read more

Loved it. The salad bar was clean, cool and had a wide variety. The lemon asparagus side was delicious without cheese. The green chile stew was flavorful but not incredibly spicy. The posole at the salad bar was tasty. The steaks were average and not a lot of flavor. The salad bar is the way to go since the steaks aren't terribly impressive. This is our second visit to this restaurant. Getting seated was a bit confusing as the wait staff that took our name, picked up menus, then walked away with someone else, leaving us to wonder whether or not we were supposed to follow. Once seated, with our drinks from the bar, our waitress informed us of the specials then left to bring us bread, but not with any plates to put our bread on, and took our order. A Cesear salad was brought and I got a salad from the salad bar. Our dinner showed up before I had eaten half of my salad leaving me to feel rushed. My prime rib, while cooked medium as I requested, was room temperature. The plate it sat on, was cold. The baked potato I requested with butter and chives had SO many chives it looked like a Chia pet. I love chives but I was actually starting to get sick of the over abundance of them. The potato was room temperature too. As I was trying to eat my mediocre meal, the waitress came to ask us about dessert. Feeling rushed again I wasn't going to dare send my room temperature food back. Not sure if I will give Cattle Baron another try the next time we're in Roswell. read more

Was in town for business and came in to have a drink and get some food to go. Ended up enjoying myself immensely. The fried pickles are ABSOLUTELY delish! (Yeah-I ate 2 orders....#NotSorry) Anthony was my bartender. If you get a chance to go to this place, WAIT for Anthony to be on shift. He made me the BEST raspberry mojito I have ever had in my life. I travel for a living and the fact that his drinks are SO amazing is the perfect reason for anyone out there to cancel whatever plans you had somewhere else, and drop your money at THIS place! Ordered the chicken fried steak dinner (awesome!), grilled asparagus (even better than the chicken fried steak-if that's even possible) and the BREAD-lets just say, its the kind you dream about at night. Yummy! What an experience! Came through Roswell on the way to California. Got here about one and took a nap at the Western Inn. Waking up, we jumped on yelp and looked for a restaurant. Found Cattle Baron's. Called them because yelp made it look like they were closing in 10 minutes. A sweet voice answered the phone and told me we had time to eat. When we got here, we were immediately escorted to a table and shortly after our server, Kirk, showed up to take our orders. Kirk was attentive, friendly, and took the time to listen to me ramble on about our trip and other things that couldn't possibly be interesting, but he listened like I was Warren Buffet giving him stock tips. He guided us to items on the menu we would enjoy and discussed options that would enhance our choices. When the food arrived it was delicious and very well presented. Visited the Roswell Cattle Baron restaurant on a Saturday night over Labor Day weekend with my wife. We shared a sirloin steak cooked medium, baked potato and a trip to the salad bar. Our waiter, Terry, was funny yet left us alone to enjoy the perfectly cooked steak and potato. The salad was fresh and had dozens of selections to choose from. I can't comment on the food as they have a stupid rule they card everyone. I am 72 and look it. Totally gray as is my wife. It is their business so they can do as lease But so can I. They seemed overpriced so they saved me money and cost themselves a bunch plus the 20 percent tip plus the city and state lost tax revenue. I guess the management feels their employees are too stupid to be trusted to gauge I was over 21. I guess if the employees are that irresponsible I would rather them not serve me. read more

We've been going to Cattle Baron for years. Lubbock, Portales, Hobbs, Ruidoso and Roswell locations. This last time we got the salad bar & soup. We usually get a regular meal, steak, seafood burgers etc., the food is always really good and the service is good. This visit we just did the salad bar. Everything was really fresh. Lettuce was crisp with no brown spots at all. A big variety of veggies, olives, picketed okra, cherry peppers, pepperchinie(sp), jalapeños, raisins, tomatoes, cottage cheese, bean sprouts, watermelon, cantaloupe then there are two different soups. We had the green Chile soup (which was AMAZING), the chicken fried steak, and the ribeye. And we loved every bite. But the real reason for the 5 Star rating is because of our server Manuel. He was so knowledgeable of the menu, personable, and funny. He had great recommendations and was very attentive. This was the best service and food we've had this entire vacation. my boyfriend and i just got finished eating here and ir was a very disappointing and stressful experience. we had asked if the bread has eggs or nuts in it because he's severely allergic to both and she checked and came back and said that it was safe and then mentioned that the only butter that was on it was the butter that is put on it after it is baked. we were confused and asked what she meant because we asked if it had eggs or nuts, not butter. she then joked and said her ears were old and said that he just shouldn't eat it because she doesn't know if it would be safe. when we ordered our food (blackened catfish and fries) we asked if she could check if all of it would be safe and tell the people cooking that he has a severe allergy and to clean the grill and she went to do that and came back and said everything would be great. I went up to get a salad from the salad bar and overheard the chef's, our waitress and a waiter talking about his allergies. they mentioned that they couldn't change the whole restaurant just for him and that they cant cook anything without contamination and that he was just being sensitive. we then talked to the manager and she changed his fries to a sweet potato and talked to everyone involved in the comments. after that our waitress was really rude and she ignored us until we had to wave her down for our check which was more expensive than what was on the menu. When we stood up to leave, we were followed to the front by the waiter who was involved in the comments about my boyfriend's allergies and it made us feel scared and unsafe. read more

After traveling 400 miles, we were eager for a good steak. Highly recommended was Cattle Baron, so we decided to go for it. We are both 85 years old, and could pass for 75. Wife prefers to not take her purse for fear of forgetting it. Upon entering a sign says " We card everyone". OK, we still should have no problem ordering a wine with dinner. WRONG, no exceptions. I was ready to leave, but the salad bar looked so good, I relinquished. The steaks were pretty good, but I will forever hold it against Cattle Baron for not allowing my wife to have a glass of wine.
