I just finished eating here with my partner and felt very unsafe. At the start, our waitress called us "ladies." I am an androgynous man, so I just lowered my voice when I said my drink order to let her know I wasn't a lady. She didn't meet my eyes when she came back to deliver our bread and drinks, nor when we tried to order, which just felt very odd to me. Now, I have food allergies to eggs and nuts, so when we got our bread, I asked if it may have eggs or nuts in it. Our waitress came back a few minutes later telling us it was safe and that the only butter it had on it was the butter it was served with. We were obviously confused, because we hadn't asked about butter. She laughed it off and told me I just shouldn't eat the bread because it "probably has eggs". She didn't offer to ask and I was too annoyed/uncomfortable to ask her to. When we ordered our food, we asked if she would let the back know about my allergies. We went to get salad, at which point we overheard our waitress, two cooks, and a waiter talking about how they can't guarantee anything and they can't change the restaurant for one person and I was just being too sensitive. We called a manager over and informed her that we weren't comfortable eating there anymore. She was very compassionate and discussed the issue with the involved parties, at which point she informed me there was concern about the deep-frying oil having egg exposure. Which hadn't been communicated to me before then! I could have gotten very sick if no one had told me the fries shared oil with egg products. I opted for a sweet potato instead, hesitantly deciding to just go ahead and eat since we were already there and the manager was now watching how my food was being prepared. Our waitress essentially ignored us for the rest of the time we were there, sometimes muttering about allergies or scoffing to herself when she'd walk by. She would only ask how we were when we were quietly discussing what happened and getting on our phones to write reviews. We had to wave her over to get our check. The amount seemed too high for what we got, but we just wanted to leave at that point. The waiter who was part of the rude discussion of my allergies checked to see how much of a tip we left after we got up and almost followed us out the door. It was extremely uncomfortable and made me feel very anxious and frustrated. I haven't had an interaction this bad in years. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone with food allergies or insensitivities, or any type of difference for that matter. read more

Ordered without gravy, brought out with gravy. Evidently, cook was in training. Sent steak back. I was alone. the hostess was unorganized...and I would have left but had been driving for 8 hours and had Google steak restaurant 44 minutes before arriving. i ordered a bake potato and when it wasn't served with the over cooked steak I asked- waiter said oh yeah sorry we're out and it's too close to closing. I know im able to microwave a potato in minutes but ok. then I asked for mashed potatoes- they showed up looking like they were from the school lunch line. and they were sorta warm. wait staff all had shirt untucked. The salad bar was amazing. The Brussels Sprouts we disgusting and I like them normally. My daughter's bun on her sandwich was soggy. My son love it but it was the salad bar he loved. This restaurant was my favorite of all the ones we ate at on our trip to the Grand Canyon. Our server was very friendly and fun, and she did a great job taking care of our party of eight. She was also patient with our middle son, he decided to be a huge butt that night because we made him order from the kid's menu. ( can I say that on here? Butt, I mean? Anyway..) The steak was perfectly cooked. The salad bar was massive and well-stocked with fresh ingredients, including desserts. I could have just gotten the salad bar alone and been satisfied. Extremely poor service, but that's only the beginning of this titanic wreck! We ordered three prime rib med rare. Unfortunately they were out of prime so we changed to Ribeye medium rare. An hour later our food arrived but disappointingly two were well done. We had not had water or iced tea refills up to this point either so we were striking out. We motioned to the waiter and showed him the two over cooked steaks. The manager returned with one steak, but it appeared that we had offended the cook: he replaced this with a blue steak. Obviously uncooked as our punishment for sending the two steaks back. At this point we were willing to just throw in the towel and asked for the check . We stated that we wanted to eat together and we would just pay for dinner and cancel the two over cooked steaks. I tried to hand the manager my card but my buddy told him "hey, I'm the only one who got to eat tonight, I got this."Low and behold the Vice President Of the Cattle Baron is sitting behind us, I believe his name was Doug.. He jumped up in a furor: it seemed like he was upset with us for receiving exceptionally poor service... the next words from this classy gentleman was get the f/&€ out. I do not know if he was drinking or just cranky. The manager seemed uncomfortable with this bizarre behavior and tried provide cover, but seriously how do you undo this?? When the Vice President Of The business treats anyone like this stay away!!! It has nice ambiance but the steak is Sysco thin chain food. I think I know what happened to the Vice President, it's Roswell NM right? No normal human being acts like that right? Maybe he was abducted by aliens. As a business owner myself, I would be appalled at the behavior of the VP. I can overlook the whole service and food thing but the VP ruined my evening. I'm betting this isn't the first time he has treated people like that, it just seemed natural to him. My favorite steak houses are ELWAY'S, Ruth's Christ, Sullivan's and Spencer's. I am obviously not a hillbilly that was above my head and culinary taste. At ELWAY'S when I arrive they welcome me and hand me a paper. Now I was not in my normal suit and tie so maybe he just thought I was a low life shmuck that he can run over and bully. But I have always felt like your true self shows when you mistreat those who are less fortunate than you. I was traveling through and had on blue jeans and a sport shirt with a ball cap. The staff began shutting down an hour and a half before their posted closing time. They turned off the fryers to where food selection was very limited. We ordered two steaks, which were delivered to the wrong table. Waited 45 minutes for the clueless staff to figure it out, receiving a cup of luke warm stew. Second time here. Had the chicken which was simple but filling, not mich to brag about. It's a down scale Golden Corral, becareful of the salad bar as everyone does not wash their hands (Especially the employees - I was in the bathroom washing my hands and one of the servers was in there but just left out after he used the bathroom) so I didn't eat from there, our server rushed is to order then disappered for 20 minutes and came back to the table like we just sat down for the first time. This was not the experience I had the first time here. I understand it was an busy weekend fir them in Roswell, bit the servixe and my food were not up to par. The locals swear by this place as one of the best in town, but it varies on any given day. My advice go when they first open to get ahead of rhe crowd and maybe the service will be better and hopefully the employees washed thier hands prior to putting the food on the salad bar. read more

Good service and good atmosphere, I came in for a quick lunch while I was in town working. Had the special which was a half rack of ribs with mushrooms and onions. Tasted good and sauce was also good. The ribs were cold like they just came out of the fridge. I had no time to ask for them to be warmed up but that is why we come in to eat so that the food is prepared and ready. The management came out and asked if it was all ok and I did let them know it was cold but I could not wait. So the waitress was great and cared about the needs. This place had the best salad bar I've seen in years. The ingredients were extremely fresh, and high-quality. You can order the salad as a side, or as a meal. I'm primarily a meat-a-tarian, but the salad bar here was so excellent, that it was very hard to choose whether to have it as a side, or just graze at the salad bar. Since it was my first time eating there, I elected to order their hot pastrami sandwich and a salad. Wow, was that great, and I don't regret it one bit. With some thousand-island or russian dressing, it would have been a great Reuben, and it was definitely a great pastrami sandwich. And I about ate myself to foolishness at the salad bar. Everything was delightful. The service was superlative. All the staff on the floor were clearly experienced, and our server was friendly, fun, and managed to always be there the instant we even thought we wanted something, but never interrupted or seemed invasive. Heck, if it were less busy, we'd have probably tried to drag her into our conversation. This was an excellent dining experience. The prices were extremely reasonable - I've sat down in a lot of restaurants that charged a heck of a lot more for lower quality and bad service, where I even went away still hungry. But when we left the Roswell Cattle Baron, it was completely satisfied. The atmosphere was that unicorn of being family friendly, yet our booth was still private and homey. I could easily see this being a good spot for lunch, or for a family dinner, or even a special occasion like mother's day or someone's birthday. Decor is tasteful, not ostentatious, and homey. The service was better, and made us feel more welcome, than many places I've dined that have way higher price tags, and lower-quality food. We felt welcome and appreciated, and the food was great as well. Something I liked was that it is possible to feed someone really well, even if they have dietary requirements. I could easily take a vegetarian/vegan family member here and know they won't end up eating a sad baked potato or iceberg salad. The meat-a-tarians will be satisfied by the excellent (better than outback, almost on par with Saltgrass) steak (yes I ate part of someone's steak), and the omnivores will be in pig heaven. The quality of the food was very good, especially for the price, the service was excellent. I would gladly dine here again. Don't tell them, but I'd gladly eat there for twice the price and still think it was a great deal. I don't understand the negative reviews and I'm glad I didn't let them deter me away. We visited from Austin, so have some pretty high standards for service and food quality, and found Cattle Baron to be well above average. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and made excellent recommendations when I was ordering steak. I ended up with a medium rare NY strip and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Some things look like they needed to be refreshed but it was tolerable. I had a petit steak and it was a little over cooked. We had to keep asking for things except the bill. After having a couple beers at Farley's, we popped into the Cattle Baron for a red meat dinner. Hostess was less than chipper and sat us in an empty room right next to the kitchen and the cold salad bar. No big deal, we asked if we could join a nearby room with other guests and found a cozy 2 top. Our server was friendly and brought us a couple more beers. I had the rib eye and J opted for a cheeseburger with mushrooms with the salad bar add on. I couldn't help but add the Louisiana style lump crab to the top of my rib eye. Salad bar was good, it had more than iceburg lettuce which was exciting. Both soups were tasty and we finished up right as our food was being delivered. Cheeseburger: incredibly good. Rib eye: Missing the crab. No worries, she'll be right back with it. Dilemma: Do I start eating the steak while it's sizzling and have nothing left by the time the crab comes, or wait for the crab and pair it with a cold steak? The answer was a combination. I waited as long as I could resist, until I could bear it no longer. It was worth it though. By the time the crab came I had a small and chilly portion of meat left. The crab was terrible, I learned my lesson. Unless you are near a body of water where'st crab are caught, don't order crab. We skated out just in before closing time, and not a minute too soon. They were already prepping for the close while we were still eating. Maybe it's nitpicky, but I don't really want to see the giant tubs of salt and pepper out refilling the shakers on the table next to me. Finding a seafood restaurant with "veggie only" options in a cattle town can be challenging. Since we are pescatarians that's what we were looking for. At Cattle Baron we struck gold! The salad bar was amazing which included two soup options, and all you can eat for only $7.99. I wanted a baked potato (both white and sweet we're absolutely wonderful) and sautéed asparagus. Our incredible server Shannon Finney, even offered to check with the cook to see if they could sautée a side of spinach. It wasn't on the menu, but they catered to my request with perfection. Atmosphere in the lounge was upscale, western rustic....just lovely and Shannon's service was outstanding. I got the 12oz prime rib. Salad bar included. Awesome salad bar. You could make a meal out of the salad bar. In addition to salads. Meat and fish were nice cuts, very tasty. Ample portions. As a child of the 80s and 90s, I remember when salad bars were everywhere. I took them for granted. Ah, those were the days. These days, it is very difficult to find a REAL, stocked up salad bar. The kind where there are a ridiculous amount of toppings, prepared salads, and even desserts. Well friends, Cattle Baron has all this and more. My husband and I stopped here TWICE (on the way to and from Ruidoso, NM) to partake in the divine abundance that is their salad bar. It is a bargain at $7.95 per person AND includes soup. The ambiance at this place was nice, but not stuffy. The staff was very kind to my 15 month old daughter as well. All of the toppings were fresh, and there were different prepared salads each time we went. My favorite was the ambrosia---with fruit, marshmallows and coconut. This place made a very small part of me wished I lived nearer, so I could sample all of the salads. read more

Rockin' salad bar for this non-meat eater! We sat in the slightly more ambient lounge where four mounted steers' (bulls? cows? what?) heads stared down upon us. Guy, our bartender, didn't flinch when I inquired delicately about a chocolate martini. I didn't want to sound too *city* or bitchy or bratty ordering such a potable, but my inquiry was met with not a flinch at all! I had the $7.50 soup and salad bar, which I highly recommend. Nothing to write home about. In town for business and we were referred here. I had the Ol Smoky burger. It was pretty good. Although the portion of fried included was scanty at best and looked poorly. Our server seemed a little out of it and Would check on us irregularly and never be around when we needed her. The salad bar according to my coworkers was pretty good and had lots of choices. The ones of my group who ordered steak weren't raving though about their dishes. Prime Rib was too done and the Ribeye was medium well when it should have been medium rare. The water tasted like ....well, I don't know exactly how it tasted....I guess I could compare it to...dish water, I mean, if I knew what dish water tasted like. My bill at the end was a little over $10, which was reasonable enough. Went there with family for youngest son's 21st birthday. Enjoyed the meal. Food was very good except for the $12 bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp. I don't buy this often because of the cost. There are only 5 shrimp on the skewer. Usually these have been very good whenever I have gotten them, however, this time they were burnt. I didn't complain to the waitress or manager because my daughter and her boyfriend were there and they both work at the restaurant. I will probably not order those again for quite some time. If you love the food quality of Golden Corral, but are dying to pay double the price, this is the place for you. When you read other reviewers saying the food id "Ok" or "average" , this is what they mean. I got the 10 oz ribeye which turned out to be one of the worst steaks I've ever had. I asked for it medium rare, but is was well done in the center and rare on the outside. How the heck does that happen? The taste? Well it was just a warm piece of bland meat. None of my family of five had an enjoyable meal. My oldest son had some fried shrimp that seemed like it came out of freezer bag pre-battered. Yes I I know they have to come frozen in New Mexico, but how hard is it to make your own batter and let the moment of preparation be the first time it gets cooked? Now to my waiter was a older man but he did his job. Management should have there staff with better fitting shirts. Who knew that a tiny burg like Roswell would have food this good? Went here with DH and two friends. We waited about three minutes for a table on a fairly busy night. Our waiter and waitress were both friendly, attentive, and very helpful, even though our dining companions changed their order three times (!). The waitress rolled with it, even dividing up a couple of things for our friends' convenience. Our food was excellent. My prime rib was PERFECT--that's the only word for it. The Caesar salad was crisp and had a definitely freshly-made dressing. Throughout the night, we never had to hunt down our waitress, even though we didn't actually SEE her. She must have been watching from an "undisclosed location", because she seemed to know exactly when we needed her, and :::poof::: there she was, tableside. We were visiting a nearby town with not quite as much to offer in the way of "nicer" restaurants. We picked this restaurant based on reviews and for the most part, it will do. I just didn't think it was all that. The best part about the restaurant was the attentive service and the ambience. The steak was okay ... not the best in the world, and I know my husband can do better; and if he had access to a grill and a reputable butcher probably would have tried. The salad bar was adequate. Don't get me wrong. It's huge, but it's not the most diverse salad bar in the world. What did turn me off about the salad bar was the fake lettuce leaves crammed between the bins of various vegetables and salad dressings. The other problem was I was eating amongst cowboys and they aren't exactly the neatest at the chow trough. There were jalapenos in the creamy italian dressing ... I guess it just "fell in there". The brownie dessert is definitely big enough for about 4 people to enjoy a decent bite. The Kentucky pie was a little "tough" -- I expected more gooey. My husband had the house steak and was not too pleased with it. Smelled like bad meat. Nothing special about the place. I initially ordered the swordfish, but they ran out. I ordered the fettuccine with chicken. It was ok... nothing to rave about.
