I basically have the entire pool to myself and the hot tub. It was so nice, I got 2 miles of swimming in and a nice hot shower. I've been a member of the Caughlin Club for four years and I'm what you'd call a heavy user -- going five days a week religiously that entire time -- so I feel like my review is about as fair and accurate as you'll get. The bottom line is that I went to this gym because it's close to my house, has a beautiful and well kept outdoor pool that's heated year round, and a traditional sauna which is somewhat hard to find these days. But the reality is that I didn't use those amenities very often. What I did use often was the weight room and the woman's restroom. I can say with confidence that the weight room is substandard, bordering on dangerous, and the woman's restroom is also substandard and generally unclean. Neither Marlene, the manager, nor the main staff are very pleasant or friendly. Marlene seems to pick the members who she likes and I've never been on that list for whatever unknown reason. I'm largely ignored by them all unless they need something from me. I once overheard Marlene asking another staff member about me one day when I accidentally spilled my water and asked for a towel to clean it up. The younger staff are much friendlier and more helpful. Back when they had a suggestion box, I filled it out often asking basic things like, why don't you get a hand dryer in the women's restroom that actually works instead of providing Kleenex to dry our hands (I'm not kidding), or why not provide updated leg machines that every other gym has so I don't have to spend several minutes setting up or fighting over the single Smith machine. They eventually took away the suggestion box. I'm comfortable financially so I don't mind the $130 monthly membership if I'm getting value, but obviously I don't feel like I am. Each February we pay an additional $150 for general maintenance that goes to pool upkeep or a new sauna heater which I understand are needed. But then it goes to painting the weight room. Not needed. It doesn't go to getting new weight room equipment which hasn't been updated since the 1990s. Or apparently providing basic cleaning supplies for the restroom. Did I mention it's always 75 degrees in the cardio and weight rooms? I don't even keep my house that warm. Wait until summer when it's 85 degrees in there. There were two last straws which caused me to cancel my membership. The first was that the maintenance man always seemed to find himself in the women's restroom/locker room in the morning when I was working out. From time to time I use the restroom or wash my hands after using the equipment or holding the weights and there he'd be, lurking. The second straw was much more serious. One morning, when I was doing my laborious hip thrust set up, because we don't have any leg machines or hip thrusters, I was carrying one of the old fashioned weights from the 1990s era weight racks (which is sharp on its end) onto the Smith machine (also from the 1990s) and I nearly cut the tip of my finger off. Blood was pouring from my finger tip so I grabbed a tissue that I had in my pocket, gathered my things, and hurried up the steps and out of the gym. I was going to tell someone at the front desk on my way out that I was sorry, but they'd have to clean up my blood and sanitize the equipment. But as usual, no one was at the front desk. I can't take it anymore. I'm done and going to Anytime Fitness off Caughlin Parkway. That gym isn't fancy, but it's got updated equipment that feels safe and the restrooms seem pretty clean and private. And so far, I've been treated like they're happy I'm there. That's a big step up from the Caughlin Club. read more

Zero compassion for a pregnant women in need. I'm 8 months pregnant and was walking in the area when I needed a restroom. I politely asked an employee, then the general manager, if I could use theirs. Both flatly refused, citing a "not open to the public" policy. No empathy, no apology, no suggestion of where else to go. Policies exist, but they're enforced by people and people can read a situation. A visibly pregnant woman asking for a quick restroom stop deserves basic decency, especially from a business built around health and wellbeing. The complete lack of care from both the staff and the GM says everything. I won't be back, and I wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone who values being treated like a human. read more

Over time, I've seen some troubling behavior at the Caughlin Club that goes far beyond simple mismanagement. There have been repeated instances of inappropriate personal conduct among staff--behavior that should never be acceptable in a professional, family-oriented environment. What's more concerning is that these issues have been brought to the attention of management, and rather than addressing them, the response has been dismissive. Leadership has made it clear that they prioritize personal relationships and internal favoritism over accountability, staff well-being, or the experience of members. The club has the potential to be a great community space, but until there's a serious shift in values and leadership, I can't recommend it to others. It would be nice if this gym actually updated equiptment, instead of paint. The treads & equiptment are so old, they finally add 2 new treads with no fans. St. Mary's and Lakeridge have both closed, don't the Caughlin Club owners want to be THE BEST. The women's locker room is so outdated & has not changed in 15 years. Management has taken away the water station and added coffee??? I love coffee, but not after running on the treadmill. Who drinks coffee when working out? They directed me to the kids water fountain, which my hydro flask does not fit under. Spend the money and add a real water station & decent treadmills. You're running a GYM. read more

I would advise against becoming a member of the Caughlin Athletic Club. I've been a member of the Caughlin Athletic Club on-and-off since I was a young boy and am now in my late twenties, as well as a former front-desk employee in my teens. The customer service of upper management/the general manager are poor. Plain and simple. Don't expect to be taken care of, whether it's the no-longer-existent towel service (they literally don't offer towels), the lack of new equipment (you're charged an additional $25-ish dollar fee once a year every year for the purpose of updating equipment and keeping the club nice); there's still equipment that's been there since I was a boy, or if your rate increases and you ask to be kept at the rate you were paying (given long-term customer loyalty and being a former employee). Additionally, upon corresponding with the general manager via email, they left their forwarded internal correspondence visible in the email and their tone was extremely unprofessional and disrespectful towards me. I'm disappointed because it's a nostalgic gym for me and close to my house, but I'm happy I canceled my membership so that I can find another gym with better amenities, equipment, and most importantly customer service. I suggest checking out South Reno Athletic Club as I've heard they have a $50 a month package for anyone and their equipment and service is top-level. Place is mainly staffed by teenagers who want to go home early and start turning things off over an hour before closing. They said they'll tell the staff to try not to shut down early.. try... The management doesn't care about any concerns and they lock you in to a 15 month agreement because they know you'll be fed up by month 3 and will stop using their poorly maintained facility. The manager, Marlene, terminated my membership because I had the audacity to request a meeting with her to discuss why aqua classes were abruptly cancelled without notice. Refused to meet with me for a brief chat. Our email correspondence got heated quickly. Marlene doesn't want to hear complaints or suggestions from clients. She takes complaints personally and is abrupt and condescending in replying to emails. I persisted to find out why the club cannot adopt a policy to notify members of changes/closings via email. I was told that too many people complained the last time she sent a mass mailing. Makes no sense to me. Instead of sending an email I was told that I would have to call the club daily to see if the pool was open. Absolutely ridiculous procedure with the technology available. I inquired about the terrible upkeep of the club and poor pool maintenance. Marlene never provided an answer to this query-she dodged the issue several times. After several emails back and forth, she told me she was supposed to be on vacation and I was ruining it. Boo hoo! Do your job! Pool maintenance is questionable at the very least. The Board of Health actually closed the pool for hazardous health conditions just after I took an aqua class during the summer. Hot tub is rarely working and cleanliness is a never ending issue. The baby pool never opened for the season. Members are paying relatively high fees yearly, yet the management does very little to make members comfortable and happy and keep the club in good working condition. Policy here is just pay your dues and don't even think about making suggestions or inquiring about maintenance or you'll be terminated. It's outrageous. Positive note-love the staff. Great teachers for the aqua class, the desk staff is always attentive and cheery. Even the cleaning lady is delightful to speak with. The business hours are excellent for club members who work. I've never encountered a manager of a business who could care less about keeping clients. I requested that my membership be cancelled on October 31, so I could still enjoy the pool for the waning days of summer. I've been a member for two years. Marlene decided she would give me one last "zinger" and terminate me immediately, even though I paid for the entire year to only use the pool services. I'm still shaking my head over this situation. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. DO NOT what ever you do become a member here. First they make you sign a year contract (once I signed up I realized why) which is ridiculous, second their staff is TERRIBLE. For the price there are far better and nicer gyms in Reno. For some context I am in a wheelchair from a recent spinal cord injury and have been looking for a place to work out and remembered my dad used to be a long time member here before he passed so I thought I'd check it out. On my tour there was hardly anyone there which I thought would be a good thing (should have maybe taken that as a hint) and I was excited to be able to play pickle ball - I was unaware and not told that the pickleball courts were ENTIRELY inaccessible, when I finally went to play there were rocky stairs up to the court that another member had to help carry me up, there's also a step up to the hot tub and stairs to the workout classrooms on the second level I thought I wouldn't want to use, but when I decided I did there was no way to get up there. When I brought my concerns to the general manager and told her I wanted to cancel my membership because it's inaccessible she told me I could crawl up the stairs. Who says that to someone in a wheelchair??? Also not to mention the whole place REEKS of mildew especially the back room. When I took the problem to HR they told me you knew we had stairs when you signed up so that's not our problem and that the GM was above them. So basically she can treat people how she wants and won't get reprimanded. Anyway long story short the staff is awfully rude and the gym stinks. I'd recommend literally anywhere else. read more

Staff and members frequently walk around wearing masks below their noses or hanging from their chins. Even saw a trainer working with a client who was not wearing a mask at all. This place is a safety hazard. Policy for freezing membership because of Covid is ridiculous; members have to come in person to argue with the manager and then pay a $20 fee. Kiddos love coming here and I get to work out in the beautiful facility, which is kept impeccably clean and run by the most wonderful, friendly, thoughtful, and kind staff. As a long time member of Caughlin Club I can only say how disappointed I am in the direction the club is headed towards. It seems more and more great classes are being cut and replaced with classes such as "Chair Yoga"..why not just add an adapted senior balloon volley ball class?? In comparison to other gyms in the area, whose class schedules offer multiple HIIT, kettle bell, full body band and weight training, barre etc. Caughlin Club is not competitive. And with our new life with COVID - the smallness of it is such a welcome for those avoiding big chain herd mentality gyms, who love tennis, swimming and a glass of vino while the kids play! I've been a member for years, merely because there is little to no other options for a pool in this area. The staff is primarily teenagers and the few management interactions I've had have been awful. The kids pool has been closed yet they kick kids that are attended out of the hot tub after 4pm for no good reason at all. There's junk laying around everywhere and pool side shade is minimal. I was told I needed to add my 6 year old to my membership and I told her I would just pay to have him as my guest at the pool and she rolled her eyes and walked away. Mind blown someone doesn't make something of this place given the opportunity there is in the neighborhood. read more

We have been members for sometime. It has the potential to be a wonderful club. The tennis professionals are really good. The bad part is there is no upkeep and it is in disrepair. This club is a little gem. We live in the Bay and my similar club cost over 5x. The gym equipment is good, the pool and hot tub good, the tennis courts are excellent. Most importantly the staff and people here are very nice. The coaches and staff for swimming and tennis are some of the best around. Guests tend to be friendly and I've never run into attitude from anyone. The setting is beautiful as well. You are basically in the middle of a park. All around this club is a great value. The only downside I see is hours it's open, and some of the facilities are a little dated but i don't mind it, it's a little retro. The kids also love the club. They especially like the daily tennis academy and swimming. As mentioned before the coaches on the teams are all amazing. The weight room has free weights, a stack, and barbells up to 100 pounds, and basically everything any other big gym has for machines and all. Love the Caughlin Club. The staff is friendly and accommodating. I was a member here 20+ years ago and loved the tennis program. Now I use this club for the gym and for the pool. I come with my 9 yr old and we love it our time at the pool in the summer or on the Basketball court during year round. I have been going to this gym for over 10 years and nothing has been updated since the first time I walked in. The equipment looks like it's from the 90s and the "weight room" is way too small for the capacity of members. The gym is dark and sad and I really hate working out here now. I remember when Caughlin used to be so lively and fun it is so disappointing that they have let it go downhill so far. They have rules on rules on rules yet they have nothing to offer in return. I've heard the pool has been shut down for being hazardous to health which does not surprise me. Every time I go there are multiple people waiting for the one single squat rack they own, it's laughable honestly. No paper towels in the bathrooms and I don't think this is in an effort to save the planet I think they are just extremely cheap. I would highly recommend nearby alternatives such as Orange theory fitness, South Rac, Eagle fitness or even 24 hour fitness before even considering coming to this musty place. read more

Their motto should be "Caughlin club hates kids." I have never seen kids yelled at so much for either just swimming and minding their own business or minor typical kid infractions in my life. The facility is sub par at best. The locker room by the pool rivals that of my junior high. The food is decent but takes forever. But it's the service, or lack thereof, that really makes Caughlin Club the worst experience ever with kids. My husband was one of the first members. We've re-upped our membership on several occasions thinking that surely the convenient location could make it worth it. But no it does not!! I will continue to avoid this place and drive much farther to go anywhere but here. Holly K - your review above is SPOT ON! Having dealt with the "M" that you refer to, you are completely right the the only place this women should work is in a prison camp. After being members for 22 years and after being yelled at by the Clubs membership manager, we were actually forced to physically come down and pick up what I can only assume was an old fashioned ditto copy of a cancellation form in order for them to eventually cancel our membership. We cancelled because of "M". If you are a shareholder in this club and reviewing these reviews, you should definitely consider firing everyone and starting over. I Have had opportunity's to do some work here, the employees give much respect and great hospatality. Cafe was open, the food is very delicious here! Their full size gym is outstanding, there was no waiting for the machines. I have never experience any other steam room like this one. I cant wait for the governor to reopen it again.
