I came for an early morning work get together on a Friday that occurs weekly. I make this comment since it was noted inside the coffee shop that it will be closed for a week in August. I love it will be close to give everyone a break but I am disappointed that I can't visit here while it's closed. Cause Coffee seems like a place you'd find on a college campus, or maybe in a location that had lots of foot traffic, but it's sitting right on the west end of the downtown strip of Desoto. Seems about right for small-ish town Kansas... An old residence sits at the confluence of 83rd & Peoria sporting a shaded, classic porch. Tables are sprinkled on said porch in front and go nicely with a bench swing (take that, corporate kaffhausses!) so you can enjoy your beverage or pastry as the traffic rolls by slowly. Flowers are in pots, well-cared for and coordinated in color and theme. Sounds like a run-of-the-mill place, no? That would a big 'no'. Cause Coffee is one of the most unique, welcoming, and thoroughly enjoyable places in the area, regardless of specialty. Artisan coffee drinks, great roasts (Messenger was the bean of choice today), and an array of breakfast-y goods and panini-style sandwiches populate a relatively simple but robust menu. Tara, the concept creator and owner, was working the front and offering up suggestions for the dark roast brave (me) and sweetened beverage types (the kiddos). I *love* seeing the heart and soul of small businesses mixed right in with the hustle and flow of their life's passion! Cause is making an impact in so many ways without making an impact in others. They compost. They donate leftovers. They use non-impacting foodstuffs and cleaning products. They recycle. And they do the whole effort as a means to donate their profits to worthwhile causes both locally and internationally. When was the last time you dined/ordered from a non-profit establishment? Go ahead, think on that. I'll wait. While you're thinking, I will relay that their current target for benefit is the Kansas City School for the Blind. Having been a volunteer reader for the KU Audio Reader for several years, I can tell you that this is an enormously worthy cause and I love contributing to a small enterprise looking to enact big change. There is ample space to spread out, the coffee is outstanding, the staff and service are as welcoming and knowledgeable as you could imagine, and the concept is special. You aren't breaking any wallets with prices, but your face may break out into a contented smile at Cause. read more

Beautiful, bright and busy are the words that come to mind when I stepped inside Cause Coffee. I've been meaning to visit this place for sometime and made the trip today. It's located in a remodeled house in downtown De Soto with seating inside and out. Walking in, I was amazed at how crowded it was for a Wednesday morning. Almost every table was full! I ended up snagging one of the last tables. Soon after, my order was ready. I ended up getting a vanilla latte and a blueberry scone (warmed up) for breakfast! Both were delicious! This is easily my favorite coffee shop that I've ever been to. The environment is so welcoming and cozy. It genuinely feels like you're sitting in a friend's home. All of the staff were friendly and pleasant to converse with. The lattes are the best I've ever had and the sandwich that I got was incredible. I read up on their mission while enjoying my latte and breakfast and was thrilled to hear that they donate all of their profits to charity. I am a huge fan of Cause Coffee! The space is gorgeous, inside and out. They have a wonderful patio outside and cozy fireplace inside. The space is also connected with the building next store, providing a little more seating and use for events. I had a honey vanilla latte with organic oatmilk. It was delicious, I could taste the touch of honey used in the syrup. Everything sold is either from local vendors (KC or Lawrence) or from 'local' companies outside of the state. A lot of the syrup comes from a place in Oregon, and is made in small batches. Tara, the owner, is wonderful to visit with. She's very friendly and has created a welcoming space! She really cares about her customers and providing a product (drink or food) that is both enjoyable/delicious and supports her values/beliefs. Thursday is great for a laid back work day while Saturday is a lot busier! Be sure to check out the direct trade section too - lots of products from around the globe that support local trade. read more

I love Cause coffee. If you're expecting Starbucks, you're in the wrong place. It is refreshing to be treated like family in this overly consumerist coffee industry. Moreover, they aren't rookies, they pull great shots and make great shakes. Even the lattes are shaken by hand in a drink mixer! Lots of seating - inside and out. Easy parking. Clean bathrooms. Peruvian chocolate, citrus, rosemary, and cinnamon. So so good!! The best part? They give most of their revenue to nonprofits in our community, as well as globally! Cause has been on my list for way too long so we finally decided to give it a try. They are in a huge old house that is also home to a youth group organization. When you walk in it is like walking into someone's home, it is very cozy and inviting. Then off to the side is the youth group area but you can rent out the space for events and Cause will open the coffee bar and even provide treats on request. There is a warm fireplace with comfy seating then tables and chairs. It was quiet on the Friday morning that we were there with a steady flow of traffic. Saturdays and after school are their more energizing times. The owner is from Lawrence so the baked items and bread comes from Alchemy and 1900 Barker. Then they have a handful of house-made items; scones, cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy, frittatas, granola and french toast. Everything is local (or small guy owned, Onyx), organic and fair trade. From the coffee to the sugar they use. Check out my photos to see who they use. I was undecided for a good ten minutes because everything looked so good. I went with the biscuits and gravy. So glad I did. The gravy was thick, the biscuits big with a crisp outside and soft interior and most important there was an abundance of sausage chunks in the gravy. The sausage had so much flavor. This dish lacked nothing and was hands down the best I have ever had. In talking to the owner it is a recipe passed down from her grandmother that is in her 90s. So that is saying something. The dish was $8 and worth every penny, I left full and happy. They serve primarily Messenger coffee but also have Onyx and another that is slipping my mind. Anybody can serve a local coffee but it still takes a special touch to brew it right. Cause does it right. My coffee was strong, hot and not a drop of acidity. My husband's cold brew warranted a second before we left because he loved it. Side note, they use stainless steel straws when staying in, love that. I didn't try a milk based drink but they do offer dairy free alternatives. Now on to the business side. This place is a non-profit 503(b), they are all volunteers and donate all profits. They are currently donating to children in Haiti but they change their "cause" throughout the year. So in reading that you would expect to have someone unexperienced preparing your morning latte, nope these are highly trained baristas that are sometimes even from the big named places in KC volunteering their time. But in keeping with the small town feel it is the owner, her mother and her daughter that greet you. A few extras: There is seating outside No tips but there is a donation jar They offer smoothies and milkshakes Very kid friendly Biscuits and gravy is Friday and Saturday only They are currently open Thursday-Saturday but expanding to add in Wednesday very soon. read more

I've been here a few times now and have to say I would give it 5 stars on every visit. DeSoto is lucky to have this place because it would do well in any big city anywhere. First of all, the espresso drinks are some of the best I've ever had. The owner really knows how to make a latte. The food is really good too. They are located in an old house and have made it into a really cozy place with a fireplace, hardwood floors, and good music. The thing I love most about this place though, and what keeps me coming back time after time, is that they donate 100% of their proceeds to charity. read more

I really hate to give this place a not so good review because their cause is great. My husband and I ordered 2 coffee shakes for sit down. We got our treats when we ordered so were just waiting on our coffee. We waited about 10-15 min for them. There were at least 5-7 people that came in after us and got shakes. So, be prepared, it's not first come first served. When we got the coffee it was good though. I don't think we will go there again. It appeared that everyone knew everyone, we were the outsiders so it didn't matter that we got our coffee after everyone else. read more

This is a little piece of heaven hidden in downtown De Soto. If you are looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and take a moment to breathe, relax and get centered this is the place for you. They have a variety of milk options for coffee drinkers and there is a great gluten free selection of foods including hot breakfast and lunch items. Don't be in a hurry when you stop by or you will miss out on so much! The calming music and fireplace give it such a cozy and homey feel. The hours are a little funky, so at least sometimes it is a hit or miss if they are open. I wish there were more places like this in Western Shawnee. The amazing family owners have created a little gem in Western Johnson County, KS. Highly recommend! read more

What a great coffee shop in an unconventional location! When I first heard that there was a trendy coffee shop in De Soto, I was very skeptical. This shop was great! As another review mentioned, it did seem like people knew each other, but that's a great thing about this. It's cozy and welcoming. People knowing each other created a fun environment. They support different causes each month (hence the name). All workers volunteer their time, which is absolutely amazing. They even offered free drip refills. Definitely will go back! I've been in the specialty coffee industry as a barista for over a year. In regards to Cause KC Coffee, is a flower nervous before it blooms? Cause Coffee has disrupted the coffee scene in DeSoto Kansas (and the surrounding KC area), a place I grew up. Not only do they have a great purpose by being a non-profit and supporting other 'global people enabling organizations', Cause has brought in the best coffee from the KC area and arguably the Midwest. Cause coffee has bread from 1900 Barker, baked goods from Alchemy Coffee, espresso, drip, and pour overs by Messenger, Thou Mayest, and Repetition. Cause Coffee has literally and figuratively bloomed (a coffee term for the beginning of a pour over) within DeSoto. Cause Coffee is a hub for people to meet fellow artists and thinkers, people who are willing to step out of their comfort zones, laugh, and love together. I hope Cause continues to bloom for others.
