I always take my guinea pigs (Truffles and Snowflake) here when I go out of town. They offer boarding for a very competitive price, about $8 dollars per day for two piggies. Just make sure to call ahead to make sure that they have room since space is limited, especially during the big travel holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas. The cages that they stay in are pretty spacious for two pigs. They also have a little area set up for exercise/play time so they get a chance to run around outside their cage. Everything is set up in the area when you first walk into the house. Nail trimmings are also free when you board, which is great since the vet normally charge $10 to $15 bucks for nail trims. (And if you owned piggies before, you know how difficult it is to cut their nails by themselves). They will also give baths for your guinea pigs at $10 per guinea pig (which is also difficult to do by yourself). I come here to refill on their pellets too since they offer pellets for a lot cheaper than the pet store. Overall, a pretty great place to board your guinea pigs when you are out of town. I haven't really had any problems and my piggies seem happy during their stay, so no complaints. read more

I don't think this is an actual shelter. I think this is a woman that "collects" guinea pigs in her house. Several years ago, I attempted to adopt a couple guinea pigs. After stringing my daughters and I along for a week and a half, she then decides to tell us that she doesn't adopt to households with children under the age of 5. She could have told us that right from the start, instead of getting our hopes up. That information was provided on the initial application. Thankfully, the Denver Dumb Friends League felt two guinea pigs were a good fit for our family. We got two sisters, around 3+ years old. They have recently passed on, both being around 6 years old. We decided to try Cavy Care Inc. once again. Shannon again denied our application. When confronted with her decision, she was extremely rude and disparaged the Denver Dumb Friends League for adopting to us. She alluded that our guinea pigs died suspicious deaths. Are you serious? She started ranting via email about people that ate dogs. This "shelter" has been open since 1998 and has one review prior to mine. Very Interesting. read more

DO NOT BUY IN A PET STORE!!!! ADOPTING IS THE WAY TO GO! This place is amazing! I just got my guinea pig from Shannon (the owner) and it is the best guinea pig I've ever had! (Side note: it was really cool going there again, because I got my first guinea pig there when I was 8 years old, so I got to see how the place changed.) It is Shannon's house, it is VERY clean and the cavies are treated so well. They are all rescued from homes that got tired of them or from pet stores who mistreated them. There are also a couple elderly guinea pigs, or some with disabilities (blind, etc). Shannon knows them all perfectly and can recommend one that is right for your needs. Phoebe (mine) is just what I was looking for, seriously. The adoption fee is $25, and it INCLUDES a free vet exam to be used in the first month, and your first pound of food- which is unbeatable! All the pet stores often give you a pair (female & male) which turns out to be a disaster because they reproduce, and then you don't know what to do with so many, which often leads to neglecting. And charge $39 dollars per guinea pig. Shannon also provided me with an igloo, water bottle and holder, a kabob, and a bowl for food, all for $5! They also have a list of cavies that are available to adopt on their website :) I could go on and on, but I should stop know because I think you got the point. When I first moved to Colorado in 2011 I wanted to do volunteer work and having owned a guinea pig in the past, I contacted Cavy Care to offer my assistance. Shannon and her staff of volunteers were friendly and polite. The care these guinea pigs get was fantastic. They get their cages cleaned weekly (the day of the week I volunteered on), get fresh veggies regularly and get vet care as needed. A fellow reviewer mentioned wondering if Shannon "collects" guinea pigs and I can attest no she does not. She IS running a shelter. Having vet teched for an SPCA in NY for 6 years, I know what a collector (or worse... a hoarder) is and looks like. This is not such a place. Like all good rescues, Shannon has guidelines for the adoption of her pigs and I respect rescues that do. She nor the dedicated volunteers don't want them to become snake food, get into the wrong hands, etc. I once picked up and transported for Cavy Care, 2 guinea pigs that were to be euthanized at a shelter. I helped transport them to cavy care (with prior approval) which gave these pigs another chance at life. She does a great job of posting the available cavies up for adoption on petfinder.com as well-- to get them seen. I highly recommend this place if you're searching for a guinea pig or two or a small group to adopt. Shannon's knowledge of guinea pigs and their health is fantastic and her dedication to the species is genuine. The only thing I can think of was that replies to email and phone inquiries upon occasion in the past to Cay care were sometimes slow to be returned. Like many small rescues run by only one person, she has a life and a family outside of the rescue so I suspect that comes into play. -Danielle P.S. I truly care about animals. I spent a good amount of time researching the best and most humane way to adopt a guinea pig for my family. We filled out an extensive application and gave personal references (to adopt a guinea pig!). We were denied because we have a five year old son. Our 'denial' was issued via a one sentence e-mail that was both rude and misspelled. After expressing a complaint about our application being turned down in this way, I received several crazed and harassing e-mails from one of the shelter's volunteers. Cavy Care Inc. is certainly allowed to turn anyone down, but I question whether people who act with no restraint can be trusted with animals. I appreciate what this organization does for the animals, and in the past have made efforts to use Cavy Care for boarding services. But several times I have been met with curtness to the point of rudeness. This organization also seems to almost discourage adoptions by an overly tedious adoption process, requiring more references than home rental applications! In attempting to provide feedback on the adoption process I was given an openly hostile response. From what I have seen, the animal care is very good, but be prepared for some very unfriendly personal interactions. I loved Cavy Care! Came in to pair my guinea pig with another one and fell in love with one right away. Shannon was amazing in went through all of the different behaviors. I came to Cavy Care with my 3 girls after our guinea pig, Uno, lost his buddy- we knew he was lonely but had no idea how to find him a friend until we found Cavy Care. Shannon was extremely patient as we debated who to trial Uno with and gave us plenty of time to select our 3. She then explained the behaviors as Uno and each pig met and helped us to select the right fit. We've been extremely thrilled with our sweet new addition, Waffles (formerly Hiccup), who seems to have helped Uno to become more social. I have been doing research on getting my 4 year old daughter a guinea pig as her first pet. Of course I would be the primary caregiver. I leearned how to take care of them, what they need in there diets, i called the vet here in my hometown to make sure they can take care of guinea pigs. We have no other animals (well asside from fish) so the guinea pig we would get would have all the love, care and attention it needs. I filled out the pre-application for a guinea pig at Cavy Care and within 24 hrs I was told that because I have a child under the age of 4 we were unable to adopt a rescured guinea pig, even though i explaind that we were fully prepaired for the responsability and that I was the primary caregiver. I couldnt believe that they wouldnt even consider us as a new family for a guinea pig that needed one, just because of my daughters age. She is a kind, loving girl and just wants a pet of her own. We tried to do the right thing by adopting one istead of going to petco but I would rather go somewhere where they are happy to help us expand our family than to a place who discriminates due to children! I guess If you have kiddos dont even bother. I think this place is more worried about there feelings that what is best for the guinea pigs! read more
