Was 3 miles away in the neighborhood for work. Upon looking at online menu, the Reuben looked like their specialty. Parking was scarce and I'm unsure if I parked in correct lot as it said Talbots Parking. I ordered sandwich to go and he said 15 minutes. It was about 10 minutes. Needed to use the bathroom and I had to cut through part of the kitchen and go downstairs. Sorry, ope excuse me. The sandwich has a sour cream sauce instead of thousand island. Really nice staff and service. The vibe is diner-y, which is fine, and the deli is solid. The main problem is the food. The pastrami is sliced with the grain rather than against, so it's floppy rather than crumbly. It also seems to be heated up in a pan or oven rather than steamed, so it's dry. At least the mustard options included spicy brown. I asked for mine on rye and they looked at me like I was nuts for not adding cheese or onions or dressing. All pastrami needs is bread and mustard! The caraway rye was good. The latkes are not latkes. They are more like potato pancakes, pureed rather than shredded, and seem to be mixed with some kind of starch. They tasted odd, and were a little small. The creamy coleslaw was fine. The potato salad was...fine. The cherry cobbler is just canned cherry compote with bisquick pancake mix on top, almost like a slice of bread. The whipped cream is canned. I felt gross after. They do have knishes, but only frozen and at the deli in 3-packs. The hamentashen are solid. Overall, way too expensive for what you get. read more

WHOA. WOW. When will I be able to go back...? This was my first meal of my latest trip to Minnesota, and I'm still thankful that my brother-in-law brought us here. I love me some pastrami in a toasted sandwich, and they have a whole section of hot sandwiches! Loved the fried egg that was yolky enough to break, but also hard enough to enjoy the yolk and egg white texture with my pastrami. Mmmmm... No frills deli service with a sit-down option available. Love that they have several options for Reubens, even though they're not my thing. Deli sandwiches are great, love the potato salad. If I come earlier in the day, I enjoy blitzes (they are sweeter, so I think of them more like breakfast). Save room for pie, you will see it staring at you from the refrigerator while you dine in. Arrived here around noon and the restaurant was busy. They were turning over tables fast and efficient, and we were seated right away. We had a Rueben and turkey Ruben, accompanied with fries and the tangy coleslaw. Everything was fantastic! Really like the sauerkraut and the Rueben dressing! SOUP REVIEW: Now that it's soup season I've been actively seeking out places with good soups to keep me warm and Cecil's does not disappoint! Their daily soups are good, and you can never go wrong with their matzo ball soup or tangy borscht. I like to grab soup and a side of their potato knishes for lunch. When eaten together my soul is warmed up and full and happy :) There is parking and a dine in restaurant as well as a deli and small grocery. I'd happily eat here every day :) the service can sometimes be a bit slow but everyone is friendly and happy to answer questions. read more

We came here with the sole purpose to try their famous Matzo Ball Soup. Also, this is the first time I've ever had a matzo ball, which is essentially a dumpling. The broth was great, it was light and subtle. The matzo ball was salty and savory. It is a good combination. However, the other ingredients (carrot, celery...etc) seemed like they could have been from a can. Nothing special. Overall, the soup is enjoyable, but probably not worth a targeted destination. However, on the positive, the service here was spectacular. Not because I believe they hold hospitality in high regard, but likely to the luck of the draw for our server. If you're looking for a old school Jewish deli then you found the right place. Reminds me so much of the deli I grew up with in Pittsburgh, Sq. Hill. They have it all. I had the Hot Pastrami. Potato salad. And of course Dr Browns Black Cherry. Potato salad was excellent, egg and onion and not all mayo. Pastrami was very good. Rye bread was the only downside. It just didn't hold up to the meat. It was more of a presliced style from the grocery. I had just had breakfast so I was real hungry but this was the first in the area so I had to stop. They have some outdoor seating. It's not very big inside so you may have to wait to sit. WAIT, it's worth it. It's a very busy area so parking can and was a issue. Will I return? Absolutely. Loved the description but the sandwich fell short for me. The grilled caraway was excellent and I would have that against n on another sandwich. The real downfall for me was the fried egg. The fried egg was fine but did nothing for this sandwich. If you, love me I expect more of the fried egg on burger sensation, you won't find it on this sandwich! Cecil's is known for their deli sandwiches, but very few people realize they have one of the most legit breakfast sandwiches in the Twin Cities: the Hashwich. It's like the best elements of a breakfast all stuffed in a sandwich. Crispy hashbrowns, eggs, veggies, a yummy spread, and buttery toast. Do yourself a favor and add pastrami. You can thank me later. This is one of my go-to weekday breakfast spots. The service is lovely and there's loads of seating. We've gotten takeout as well and it's been great. This is a neighborhood staple that I've been meaning to try and was not disappointed! I got the Reuben with coleslaw and the blintz for to go and received my order within 10 minutes. Came with sour cream, jam, and a small(and delish) pickle. The Reuben is classic and nice and sour, though less meat than a New York style which is what I think of. It's really only the take out deli area I'm commenting on, since we haven't visited the back area sit down area. It's solid deli food. I miss the Bread and Circus in Cambridge MA deli. Nothing can ever match that full-on amazing spread, but Cecil's exists and does a nice job for the local St. Paul community. read more
