We hired Milben Construction for a residential remodel after receiving a competitive quote and a…read moreprofessional initial presentation. The original scope included a kitchen remodel with a layout change, one bathroom, and flooring. Based on early progress, we executed additional written change orders expanding the project to multiple bathrooms and most of the house.
After the final change order was signed, progress slowed significantly. There were often only one or two workers on site, limited supervision, and long periods with minimal activity. Payment requests were made in amounts and at times that did not align with the agreed schedule, and supporting documentation was delayed when requested.
As we raised concerns about progress and completion dates, communication became increasingly difficult. In multiple interactions, we experienced the contractor raised his voice, became confrontational, and responded in a hostile manner when timelines or documentation were discussed, making coordination and resolution challenging.
By the contractual completion date, we had paid the contractor in full, including a substantial amount beyond the original contract amount, yet the project remained substantially incomplete (approximately 60% completed). Only one of four bathrooms was finished, the kitchen was missing most cabinets well past its scheduled completion date, several bathrooms lacked basic fixtures, brand-new appliances were damaged during installation, and a roof repair, ventitian plaster and other details included in the scope were not performed.
After requesting a revised completion timeline, work ceased, and additional invoices were submitted for items that were not completed, not part of the contract, or already paid for. We later became involved in a dispute regarding a lien filed against the property, which was ultimately removed through the legal process. At the time of resolution, it was determined that funds were owed back to us.
According to publicly available CSLB records reviewed after these events, the contractor's license is currently suspended during the time this review is written. This review reflects our direct experience. Homeowners are strongly advised to conduct thorough due diligence and verify license history before engaging this contractor.
