    What a wonderful place --loved the food and service. Cocktails looked good but we opted for a bottle of Tannat instead, which paired beautifully with the mushrooms and steak. Reservations highly recommended.

    I would give this an easy 5/5 for the food and service alone, but the prices are holding this place back from being perfect. As a table of 3 we split quite a few things, which seems like the way to go here. Our favorites were the fish (incredible), the white asparagus, the steak tartare, the chocolate cake, and the cheese dessert. Everything seemed inventive, perfectly balanced, and had insane flavors. The fish had a bone marrow sauce on it that made it taste meaty, yet it was super light still. Our server was great and gave good wine and food recommendations as well. Now where I wasn't super thrilled was the prices. It was $28 for three stalks of asparagus... I understand it takes effort but that's crazy. $50 for 2 small pieces of fish. We each spent about $120 here and I was seriously debating hitting up the taco truck near our apartment afterwards

    Came here during the holidays and it was pleasantly uncrowded. The staff were all incredibly friendly and made us feel right at home. Highlights: Persimmon Salad: Wow! This was a standout dish with amazing flavors and textures. Perfectly balanced and delicious. Steak: Cooked exactly how I like it, and the demi-glace was rich and flavorful (though maybe a tad salty). The puff pastry that came with it was amazing. Martin Fierro: This dessert was like a fancy, elevated cheese cracker with fruit. So good! A few minor things: Mushroom Plate: It was okay, but the truffle was a bit bland. Demi-glace: Could have used a touch less salt. Overall, a great experience. Beautiful space, wonderful service, and reasonable prices. Highly recommend!

    Literally some of the most delicious food I've eaten and consumed in awhile! We made reservations based on the reviews and me visiting DC for a friend. The service was top tier and they have two floors. I highly recommend the various wines, cocktails, and the ever evolving menu they have. The only dish I thought was worth passing on is the rice pudding as it just tastes like Spanish paella. Everything else was super unique and my favorite was the welcome dish they gave each of us which included this yellowtail caviar bite. I really can't recommend this place enough! It was super creative and delicious. It's great for special occasion or even as a date spot. The ambiance is dark and romantic which is good for all sort of vibes.

    Amazing, would 100% come back. One of the best places I've been to in a while. I honestly don't think you could go wrong with anything. Everything was delicious - plum, hibachi (?) - the fish, leek tart (and I don't even like leek / savory tarts and I thought it was delicious), lamb belly (potatoes were amazing in addition to the lamb), shrimp paella (forgot name, but it was amazing). I will have to try the dessert next time but all in all highly HIGhly recommend

    Cozy and cute spot as most people were here on a date while I was with my friend. We got an appetizer, entree, and dessert each. Food is amazing and loved the presentation of all of it. Liked their orange wine too. Service was attentive and friendly. I definitely would want to come again!

    came for restaurant week and thankfully it wasn't crowded -- 3 courses for ~$80pp first course: - hamachi crudo: good but standard - latkes: really flavorful and i liked the texture - eggplant (my personal fave): reminded me of chinese eggplant but with a bold sauce second course: - lamb belly: beautifully presented. fish roe was a bit unnecessary but the flavor was just right and paired well with potato - chorizo dumplings: packed with umami and almost like a soup dumpling, but the broth was meh - fish: small portion and a lighter contrast to the chorizo desserts: - ice cream: light and refreshing unique acai flavor - chocolate cake: very dense but also very chocolatey. a bit dry - bread pudding: not my favorite but interesting/unique

    This is hands down the best restaurant in DC for me these days. The food is incredible, creative, and always changing. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about every food and drink items. The space is very cozy, and comfortable. The definition of hospitality. I also love all the unique Uruguayan foods and wine.

    It is actually criminal that there weren't more people at this place! I came back after having loved Restaurant Week here last year, and the chorizo dumplings just blew me away. They were so flavorful, with absolutely delicious oyster mushrooms, a delicate kombu broth, and the loveliest chorizo filling in the ricotta dumplings. The quality was as high as I remembered from my first visit, the service was top-notch, the menu was creative, the ambience was great. They threw in a drink and a tasty little cheese tart as an amouse-bouche on top of everything else as well. It's definitely expensive, but a lot of restaurants in DC are expensive, and they're putting out really high-quality food (better than several of the Michelin spots in town), so it made me really sad to see the place empty. My recommendation is that people come here and try the plums, the leek tart, the chorizo dumplings, the chocolate cake - any of them - and see if you don't leave loving it too. I'll definitely be back - the blue crab profiterole is calling me - and I hope that it being this quiet tonight was a fluke!

    A restaurant that The Washington Post's food critic Tom Sietsema enjoys is worth a visit. Nestled along Adams Morgan's 18th Street NW, my wife and I dined at Ceibo on a Thursday evening at 7 p.m. Inside a rowhouse in a minimalist, yet design-forward space, here's our experience. 1) Food: From the amuse bouche to the dessert, everything was well flavored, presented, and unique. Being a modern South American restaurant, they pull from traditional flavors, combing it with technique and well-executed texture. To feed two of us, we ordered the house bread, hamachi crudo, plums, pickled eggplant, chorizo dumplings, the strawberry dessert, and the chocolate cake. We didn't have a bad dish, but the winners were the plums with sheep's milk ricotta and the chorizo dumplings, which come in a flavorful broth. If you love chocolate, the chocolate cake is phenomenal (and comes gluten-free.) 2) Drinks: With two beers, several wine options, and five unique cocktails, there's something for everyone. Enjoying mezcal, my wife enjoyed the "Humo" cocktail. With a sweet and sour tooth, the Pomelo was refreshing and comes in a taller glass with ice. 3) Service: Our server (I believe her name was Alex) was delightful. Despite a full room, she was personable and passionate about the food. (She mentioned she was a regular before joining staff.) Food was timed well. 4) Space: It's a small, intimate space with single candles on the tables making it perfect for a date night. There are a few tables for medium-sized groups like the round table by the front window. 5) Area: 18th Street NW is filled with other restaurants, bars, cafes, and more. Parking can a bit to find so consider Metroing or walking.

    Wow! What a treat! We ended up at Ceibo by chance, and boy let me tell you. That food delicious. Service five starts. Drinks marvelous. Make sure that you get in here before this place starts to get popular. My favorite was that they are very gluten friendly. They have gluten free bread and almost everything om the menu is gluten free.

    KenScale: 8.0/10 Visit: October 2024 Compared to its larger neighbors in South America like Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay is not as prominent in people's minds for culture and food. Well, here is one fun fact: Uruguay has a higher population of cattle compared to humans, almost four to one. The country, though, according to brothers Juan and Manuel Olivera, is so much more than tasty steak. At least that is what the Oliveras tried to show in their restaurant Ceibo, which opened last year in Adams Morgan. The restaurant, whose name is derived from the country's crimson-colored national flower, is inspired by the South American bar culture of Montevideo, Uruguay's capital. My wife Jun and I recently visited the restaurant, and there were some really pleasant surprises from our dinner. The best part of our meal at Ceibo came early. Our server highly recommended the leek tart with taleggio cheese on pastry dough on the menu, and we are very glad we listened to him. The tart was exceptional, showing the earthy and savory character of leek quite well and the pastry dough not overly heavy. We also really liked the mushrooms with squash, walnut pesto and black truffle, with its smoky flavor shining to great effect. I could tell from both dishes that the restaurant wanted to showcase its command on not just meat but vegetables as well. On the other hand, one of the signature dishes at the restaurant, chorizo dumplings with pork sausage, pecorino sardo and mushroom immersed in kombu brother, was a slight letdown, and we both thought the seasoning could've been slightly toned down. Given Uruguay's reputation for beef, we had to try the steak, accompanied by black truffle, potato and onion jus. Jun was complimentary of the steak's quality (grilled at around medium rare) with its juicy, tender texture; I agreed that the steak was indeed quite delicious but wondered if the price ($55) was somewhat steep given the portion. The restaurant also had some tasty desserts. If you are not a sweet tooth, you would be won over by the restaurant's take on a traditional Uruguayan dessert called Martín Fierro with cheese mousse and quince. We also enjoyed the refreshing sabayon ice cream with black cherries. Getting a reservation at Ceibo is probably not the hardest thing to do, but the restaurant was nearly full by the time we were finished with early dinner so I would still recommend booking in advance. The restaurant has a full bar with interesting wines from all over the world, with a critical mass from Uruguay (a country known for its Tannat reds to complement meat dishes). The clean and minimalist dining room offers an enticing venue for a variety of occasions from date nights to friends and family gatherings. I don't know how often the menu at Ceibo changes, but what the restaurant showed us on our first visit had a number of intriguing dishes that we would be happy to go back to try other dishes (and perhaps include Uruguay in our future travel wish lists).

    Summary: Wonderful, small subtle gem in Adams Morgan. I'd come back in a heartbeat whenever my next visit to D.C. is. Dishes are typically $20-$30. Food: Advertised as Uruguayan or at least inspired by. Fine-dining presentation (I don't think there is a prix fixe menu, but you can basically create your own since the menu is arranged lightest to heaviest. In addition to what I ordered, there were couple of free small bite desserts and even a complimentary white wine (glass). Chorizo Dumplings: My goodness. I had wonderful meals at Amazonia, Impefecto, Tail Up Goat, and of course Ceibo during my stay (oh, and lunch at Lapis)--these dumplings are possibly the single favorite thing I ate during my trip. Four rather large dumplings filled with chorizo (the more subtle kind rather than the heavy Mexican-styled one may of us are used to), and topped with thick-cut pieces of bacon (also wonderful). Lastly, it's served with a broth that was more like a wonderful light ramen/Asian broth. This thing was wonderful and I still think about it. It's one of the larger entrees on the menu. "Rice Pudding": Not a dessert, but an entrée that's similar to paella. Reddish (saffron?) rice with some rather large shrimp over it, and then with a reddish sauce poured over by the server. This was excellent in its own right. Dessert: Massini--sponge cake, chantilly cream, orange liquor (if you like crème brulee, you'll love this). Perfect way to end the night. It was excellent, which is impressive because I think I read somewhere that Ceibo does not have a dedicated pastry chef (that may have changed). Cocktails/Wine: Didn't have any cocktails, although the pics seem wonderful (I had to cool it down after a few days lol). Wine prices were more than fair, and the Uruguayan red I end with punched well above it's weight in price (I think it was $19, tasted like a $30 glass). Service: Excellent, perfect: I think his name was Carlos (?)--paid attention to details like cutlery arrangement, pacing of meal, etc. Great at explaining items and their heaviness (didn't try to upsell). He was rather busy once the crowd picked up, but he noticed me wiping a small mess that I had made and then appeared and got the rest himself. There was also another guy helping. Ambiance: It's a subjective thing, but I love places like this. Rather small (think of Komi--RIP), and dim (but not too dim) lighting. One thing I loved was that the taller employee kept adjusting the dimmer depending on how dark it was getting outside (there's one large window up front)--I thought that was great lol. Music was enough to heard but not more than that--this place is very conversation friendly. Music was in the vein of 90s-era jazz fusion or trip-hop (Air, Portishead, etc.). I love that kind of stuff, but again, subjective of course. The point is that they pay attention to details. Also, there's a downstairs bar area, but I didn't see that in person. All in all, loved this place. I hope it gets enough press though--it's in a bit of an understated location, and I could see this place getting overlooked only because the D.C. food scene is so competitive, but I hope I'm wrong. I felt the price was appropriate given the level of food (and the wine prices were more than fair), but if you want to try the place with without spending too much, sit at the bar and order the dumplings, the massini, and a glass of wine. I would probably do that once a month if I lived in D.C.

They have a good wine list, you can get good stuff without breaking the bank. Their espresso is nice. I don't think they have decaf though.

What really stood out though was the service. We were a little early on our Resi before the restaurant opened. Rather than have us wait in the rain, the staff let us in. I reached out on their website to share that we were a bit disappointed as we were there with friends who claim this is one of their favorite Italian restaurants in the DMV, and having multiple bones in a dish is not acceptable. Not coming back and saying something is also unacceptable. No one reaching back out after I emailed them, is equally very unacceptable.

The hostess then told us there was not a table ready for us, and worse, was unable to give us a time estimate on when a table would open up because "we do not time our tables." So what is the point of making a reservation? Hilariously he said we can wait for a table outside instead, but they Won't be turning on the heaters. Happy to know they want us cold and hungry. We ended up waiting by the bar area, which was uncomfortably packed, for a drink while a table opened up. The bartender there was nice and respectful! Eventually, after waiting for some time we got a table inside. It was quite loud in the main room. There were three separate birthday parties. We were glad to start ordering. We ordered the oyster mushrooms, patatas bravas, chicken thighs, seafood paella, and the pork belly. To note, all of the food was lukewarm/cold with the exception of the pork belly because they forgot about it and it was prepared late. Even the paella, which is served on a cast iron, so it has the optics of being piping hot, was actually just warm. The rice felt a little hard. The mushrooms had too much breading in each bite. I enjoyed the green sauce in the chicken. A runner asked if we wanted complimentary bread with our green sauce, which we responded positively towards. But soon after another runner picked up the plate with the sauce and swooped it away. Then the first runner came back with the bread right after, noticeably confused by the lack of sauce. It felt comedic. I enjoyed the wine and the pork belly most. Truly unforgettable service.

All 3 wines were delicious and the bartender, Fabio was the best and very engaging throughout my time at the bar. I had the beef tartare and it was the best I've ever had! I then ordered a glass of the Domain du Somail Red Blend paired with the steak frites, which was the best pairing. I was stuffed but decided to get the crème brulee, which you could never go wrong with. It was the best CB I've had in a while. We came here with a few friends for an early dinner, making reservations in advance. Once seated, we decided to order some starters to share: +the Warm Pistachio Crusted Goat Cheese Ball - with honey and red wine caramelized onions +Chicken Liver Mousse - with white wine gelee, apricot, pickled veggies, and an onion marmalade +Baked Camembert de Normandie - with confit garlic, thyme, and honey +and, an Onion Soup for the hubs - prepared with beef broth, croutons, and Gruyere For our entrees, I went for the Steak-Frites, which came with a hanger steak and shallot sauce; you can sub the usual fries with truffle fries, which I recommend! My counterparts enjoyed their Long Island Duck Breakfast (with seared asparagus, cumin carrot puree, cippolini onions, and port sauce), the Maryland Rockfish (with artichoke barigoule, carrots, brasied fennel, and noilly prat sauce), and the Local Roasted Chicken (with English peas, carrots, baby potatoes, and truffle jus). If you want to sop up your sauce with bread, don't forget to order the breadbasket!
