Tryst kept me afloat. The lovely service I have always received, whether at the bar, a table, or a sofa, has been consistent though a decade of visits, as has the engagement of this charming bijou of a cafe with the surrounding neighborhood. Although probably first established while Friends was still on the air, Tryst has kept up with the comings and goings of Adams Morgan, reiterating itself with changes in the local culture and the arts, which are often on display. The building itself has a narrative to it, but it's the centrality of this respite from 'everywhere else' that makes Tryst stand out, lets it occupy memories of comfort and hospitality in my mind, keeps pulling at me to visit time and again. If it wasn't for Tryst, I doubt professional and personal lows would have turned out so rosy, in the end, for me. read more

Personally, I've visited Tryst more time than I can count, and at literally all time of the day. A hidden gem in the DMV area!! Their flat whites (basically all their coffees) come with their signature animal crackers on the side and reasonably priced. Walked in on a Saturday for lunch. Don't wait to get seated; customers have to seat themselves. There was sofa, many tables and chairs, and a bar. Some people were working on their laptops. It tasted great - flavorful, but not salty. The textures were also complementing each other - the soft roasted turkey juxtaposed with crunchy bacon and toasted wheat bread, as well as the veggies (lettuce, tomatoes). We were looking for a spot to read books in DC that was indoors and came upon Tryst. This is a happening place, so if you're looking for a quiet place, this isn't it. If you're looking for a place where you can immediately sit down, this might not be what you're looking for. However, it's a nice, spacious place with a bunch of seating ..it's just that people in the seats hang for a good while. Service can be hit and miss...because there's so many people in there. Our server (who I think was also the manager on duty) was nice and gave us space to do our thing. I had an iced mocha that was great and she had a chai tea that was good, so no complaints there. My complaint though, is about whomever the cashier was at the bar. When we were ready to order I didn't see our server, so I went to the counter to order. She asked if it was to go or dine in, and I said dine in, only to be told that the tables have servers. Which I knew, but I hadn't seen ours in a bit (again, she was busy) and I wanted to order at the counter. The lady there told me I couldn't order there and that I had to order through the server. I reiterated that I hadn't seen our server and wanted to order there. She again told me I couldn't but for some reason got an attitude about it. So I returned the attitude and questioned why I couldn't order there. I walked away, and when our server came over I explained the issue. Even our server was perplexed and said that we could order from whomever or wherever we wanted to. So we ordered from her, and got what we wanted. I go a breakfast burrito that had more egg than anything, but the sauce that came with it made up for the lack of chorizo & cheese. Tryst is a cozy coffee shop in AdMo that I had been passing by for quite awhile. I was excited to pop in on a cold day to enjoy coffee with a friend. Upon entering, the staff was oddly standoffish - staring directly at me and my friend with blank, judgmental faces and avoided asking for our order. Once we approached the counter, the barista told us they had table service and would serve us shortly. However, we did not have anyone come to take our order until about 15 minutes after we sat down - all of the employees were not attending any customers and were simply talking among themselves. This came off as extremely rude and seemed as though they were being exclusive as to which customers they served. As for the coffee, it was a standard latte - nothing too special. The Masala Chai was an American style chai with lots of milk and little spice or flavor. Seems like a nice place to get work done or catch up with a friend. However, after this experience, I will not be returning. To the Tryst Staff - please learn to treat ALL customers with respect and make them feel welcome in your establishment. read more

I stepped foot inside after 10 years since the last time I was here in DC and ordered a dirty chai frappe. For the DC heat, this was still amazing as usual. Ordering at the counter was easy and efficient. The space now has WiFi on weekends. The only things that deducted a star was the bathroom didn't have a hook for bags and didn't have a holder to dispense toilet paper so it was a scary task of not letting a giant toilet paper roll slam to the ground. I love Tryst. It's a trendy, low light, cafe meets bookstore vibe with a mix of table, lounge and couch seating! The menu is really expansive for what they do and I adore their hummus plate and Masala chai, which I get almost every time I go. It's in 18th in Adam's Morgan so parking is trash BUT there's a parking garage right next to the Van Leewens ice cream that's well priced and free after 5-6. This is an amazing first date place for really young (college/grad school) students as the vibes are great, the price is right, they have a full bar without BEING a bar, and it's in the middle of everything. Not so much for grown folks though as a person married for many years I go here alone and with my hubby specifically to hang and get work done. It's usually packed with teleworkers in the afternoon so good luck getting a seat near a plug! Otherwise it's an awesome place- and DEFINITELY try the pumpkin bread and the daily pastries. Came here on Saturday 11/2 for brunch right before Adams Morgan Porchfest. It's self seating with a mix of 2-4 table seating and couches. My friend was able to snag us a seat at a small bar area at the window within 10mins of arriving so that was clutch. I had: Americano - 10/10 - with half and half and added vanilla syrup. It did the job and was nice paired with the waffle. Waffle w/ a side of bacon - 10/10 - the waffle was perfect in terms of texture. Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and soaked up the syrup well. You got 6 pieces of bacon with the size order, nothing crazy to report there. There was a bussing station right behind us so that was fairly noisy with the constant clash of dishes going into it. Our table was also extremely wobbly, to the point that cutting into my waffle (which required little effort) led to me spilling my Americano (you can see the soaked napkin in the picture). Lots of flies and a bee joined us for our meal so that wasn't fun but overall the meal was good. Our waitress was attentive and very apologetic for any delay, they were busy considering the porchfest so I thought that service was exceptional considering the influx of people. read more

A tall female server was I told I am allergic to milk and asked about the content in a dish she said she would ck and if it did have milk I would have my second choice. Will the first choice was served so I trusted it was milk free. The next day I have a full blown sinus infection which happens when I have milk!!! It's horrible painful and I have to get on an airplane in pain is a nightmare! What a cute little joint!! First and foremost - LOVE the gluten free pastries for my GF folks out there. Service was great - fast and very friendly. Only reason I have 4 and not 5 stars is because my drink was incredibly incredibly sweet and syrupy (I got a vanilla latte). This could definitely be the particular barista who made my drink and not a representation of the whole place (and maybe you'd like that super sweetness!) - but it was so sweet and thick for me personally that I couldn't finish it. I came here to work one morning and I was not the only one who had that idea! Good wifi and comfy seating, it's very cozy and chill vibes in there. They have full table service so seat yourself and the staff will come to you. I ordered a banana nut muffin which had surprise chocolate chips in it! I also got the chorizo breakfast burrito. It was solid but I felt like it was almost missing that classic chorizo flavor and texture. They let me sit and work for 3 hours before politely bringing me the check to tab out. This is without a doubt my favorite coffee shop and probably the best coffee shop I've ever patronized. The coffee drinks, food, smoothies, and baked goods are the best. The service is very commendable. My absolute favorite thing is the ambiance. I don't like bright coffee shops but Tryst's lighting is perfect. The seating includes very comfortable couches and upholstered chairs along with sturdy wooden chairs and tables. I live in SW DC and gladly travel across town to spend time here reading and enjoying coffee drinks. Also, because of my schedule, greatly appreciate the midnight closing Thursdays-Saturdays. With all that said, I have one gripe. Their AC and heating system needs work, hence the 4 stars rather than 5-star reviews. On real hot days, it's not cool enough and on real cold days, it's not warm enough. On cold days like we've had the last several days, I'm reluctant to go because I'll probably have to keep my coat on. I love this place and hope they can get that fixed at some point. read more

Not only does Tryst have some of the best coffee I've had, they also make great sandwiches! I tried the Hot Cindy Sandwich which is like a tuna melt. It was so good and filling. I got the Mexican Hot Chocolate and it was delicious. I will be back here to try more of their cafe drinks. I also got the spinach and feta quiche and it was a little wobbly, not quite to my preference. The side salad was fresh. This place had a very nostalgic atmosphere which makes perfect sense considering it was opened in the 90s. It reminds me of the cafés of my childhood in the 2000s.
