Stopped by this downstairs Frederick, Maryland mainstay the other day and it was alright. The service was so so in terms of speed and politeness but the ambiance is probably one of the best parts. It literally feels like you are in a basement wine cellar making the name very appropriate. They host a number of love numbers such as comedy shows and music acts, and turn into a mini club it appears after a certain hour playing some great tunes from the 2000s. Tried the house burger and the flavour we're good but my medium burger turned out to be well done instead. This led to it being on the dry side so ask for extra blue cheese butter. The side of fries is extremely generous but I found the side salad a bit awkward to eat - basically a baby head of lettuce. The wings however are absolutely delicious and I've heard good things about the oyster offerings and the brisket. Certainly worth checking out. read more

The big bald fat bouncer gave me such a rude attitude with my girl at the door about me asking what the cover charge is for, to the point he got up in my face like he was going to fight me. My family really loves this place for their burgers and happy hour drink specials (and to be fair, even their veggie burger is good and they do have a nice happy hour). The rest of the food is decent but nothing special: dressed up bar bites. Also good: They have a comprehensive drink menu and can fix a nice cocktail. They also have regular comedy nights and live music sometimes (all of which can be hit or miss, as live entertainment generally is). Not so good: It's just...dingy. The menu says more upscale but the space says dive bar. I really wish it wasn't because I could see it being a regular lunch and happy hour spot. However, they turn into a bit of a seedy dance bar on weekend nights and some of that sticky floors and faded decor vibe hangs around all week long. The furniture has seen better days. They definitely have their place. I know I would have loved going here when I was in my early twenties. But they're best for a happy hour snack or comedy on a Sunday night. read more

Not great or even good. Girlfriends decided to go out and I hadn't been out since COVID began. They chose here and I was nervous as soon as I walked in. 7 pm at night and NO ONE was in the restaurant except for one guy at the bar. That wasn't a good sign. Girls decided to order appetizers to start along with drinks. Took a long time to get the server to come by and get drinks. Ordered and when drinks came out - one was poorly made and while I'm cool drinking beer directly from a can, it would have been nice to offer a chilled glass or just a glass. Appetizers then came out. Wings, crab dip and hummus. Hummus was flavorless Crab dip was decent but the bread was extremely tough. Wings - undercooked. I bit into the first one and noticed it was very "chewy and clear". Not all the wings were undercooked though so the server did take back the undercooked one and comped the dish which we appreciated. Once we received the check however, the server had charged one of our cards twice. Instead of getting it fixed, we worked it out between us. As we were driving out of the parking garage, I noticed that the White Rabbit was packed with people. Apparently Frederick already knows something we didn't. Will not return. read more

We stumbled into The Cellar door when another restaurant we were planning on was closed. To be honest we were a bit hesitant because its in a basement and we thought it would be dingy. To our surprise it was a great space with character, clean and cozy. And the food was great! Came during happy hour and got $5 wine and beer, salmon and a really tasty brisket sandwich. When my friend suggested this place for dinner and drinks, I was skeptical. Other reviewers warned that it was more like a dive, more catered to college kids, didn't have good service, etc. As a loyal Yelper, I trust and value those reviews. But at the same time, I like to give businesses a chance to prove them wrong before passing my own judgment. That's why I came here, and I'm so glad I did because I really had an awesome time! This place is located in Downtown Frederick, which naturally makes parking a pain. We managed to find a parking garage that was about a 2-3 minute walk from the restaurant with merely a $5 fee, which was great. The entrance to the restaurant is a little sketchy. It's a literal cellar underground, so you go downstairs and enter. The host is right by the door and ours was very friendly. We got a 2-seater table by the stage right away. The stage is used for open mic night, karaoke night, DJ night, comedy night, etc. But at that time (8PM Friday), there was just another table on the stage - but the DJ was set to start at 10. Our waiter was Eric. Seriously, what a gem! One of the best waiters we've ever had and we both love to try out new restaurants all the time. He was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and easy to talk to. His recommendations for menu options were consistently amazing. (We also told him he was cute on our receipt - which is also true lol). Anyway, let's get to the important parts here: Drinks: The peach cosmos were delicious. Sweet but not too sweet; actually tasted like peaches versus other ''peach'' cocktails that taste more like just sugar. They make a nice appletini but not the best I've had - I've give it a B-. They have a delicious pumpkin spice apple cider beer for the fall season that I really enjoyed and I'm not a beer person at all. Overall, I'd say the bartenders are incredible for managing the amount of customers they get in the small space they have. Food: WOW. You wouldn't think the food here would be great judging by the appearance, but everything I ordered was knocked out of the park. The calamari appetizer was perfect - not chewy, perfect crispy outside, and served with two amazing dipping sauces. And omg... the Mahi Mahi Marley... I devoured every piece of that dish and that is rare. The dish was common dolphinfish with grilled jerk seasoning, mango salsa, coconut rice, and the chef's choice vegetable (in my case, squash). Oh my god, it was amazing. Eric, our server, recommended it to me when I was torn between it and the fusilli pasta, and I couldn't thank him enough. What a spectrum of flavors. The fish was cooked perfectly, but then you also had the jerk seasoning PLUS the tangy, sweet mango salsa PLUS the subtle hint of coconut in the rice PLUS the deliciously fresh roasted squash all giving you an amazing flavor profile. The only thing I was wishing for was for the serving size to be bigger. Seriously, I don't rave about restaurant dishes like this often, and I usually like to stick to what I know (like steak, rarely fish), but this was tremendous, and I will return just to have it again. Once we were full of food, the DJ started setting up and playing at 10. Now, if you're like me, you're assuming the DJ is lame, doesn't play good songs, is more catered to a specific age group, etc. No! The DJ we had was fantastic and played awesome songs catered to a variety of age groups. So many people of all ages were dancing! And that was great to see. My friend and I are in our early 20's and we were dancing with fellow ladies in their 30's, 40's, and even 50's, and we all had a blast. Just be warned - the later it gets, the more guys get out there looking for a good night. It reminded us of our high school homecoming days lol. So be careful, stay with your friends, drink responsibly, and have good judgment. Please. We will be surely adding this place to our list of favorites. Give Eric a raise! :-) read more

Comedy - 4 stars Food - -1 star Ordered 2 drinks, mine was very watered down but what the hell. Food, different story. My wife got shrimp tacos and the were precooked from the store, and the tortillas were molding. Obviously she didn't eat. I ordered the salad so we could share each other's food. Salad wasn't bad, although they brought me the side salad not the dinner salad and the bill reflected the side salad. So...... comedy done and I get the bill - 75 bucks. I questioned the bar tender and she sold she is half Iranian ( if that matters? ) and she didn't have time for my shit. The sad thing is that I love coming to the live comedy but our party of 19 will never return and we totaled our bills and that's 750 every Sunday. Shame on you for not caring enough to stand behind your food and overpriced drinks. I asked to talk to a manager and I was asked to leave. So we all did. Awesome happy hour options! Their fried pickle appetizer is amazing, the salmon entree and the lentil burger are both sumptuous too! Decent drink menu , they have live music which is a plus! The staff is super friendly and it's a place where families with kids are welcome too! I was there last week with my colleague and her grand kids , both no older than 24 months and we had a wonderful time. The staff made sure the kids were happy too which meant a lot! Stopped in with a Groupon not knowing what to expect. Our server, who I assume was the manager, was friendly and had great suggestions. We started with the fried goat cheese with beets. This small plate was big on taste. I got the Sweet and Sassy burger with boardwalk style fries. My boyfriend for the Signature Cellar Burger with chips. Both burgers were great and honestly, we liked the house chips better than the fries. We will be back and looking to try their happy hour specials. read more

We were visiting Frederick for the weekend and after an awesome tour of Flying Dog we wanted to continue our beer sipping weekend and look for a cozy place for drinks and eats. Our hotel was nearby Historic Frederick so we headed downtown and parked in a garage. After running in the rain we finally came across some deep steps that lead to a sign that said "The Cellar". Eager to get out of the rain, we peeked inside. Décor was much like you would imagine; stone, brick and dim. It was very cool. They had a nice bar and smaller hightop booths filled with comfy looking pillows. We chose a seat at the bar joining only one other couple at the other end. This was our downfall. The bartender clearly saw us but chose to ignore us and walk away. We saw her chit-chatting as we sat there waiting for a drink. It was then clear that they were in between shifts as another bartender came in and took our drink order. She was friendly and attentive.. That is, until the place filled up. We ordered food. A burger and fish tacos.. It was over an hour and us asking for it to finally get it. We saw the group next to us eating fish tacos. They didn't even order until after us. When the food arrived there was no form of apology or anything. That was what kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Clearly, we weren't going anywhere. We had enough to drink and the food was tasty but just a little apology would have been nice. Although the service was sub-par, I would say this was a cool place. I doubt I'd go again but it was a cozy place for conversation during a great weekend getaway. Just wish the service had been better... read more

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this restaurant. Four of us went on a Thursday night, intrigued by the $30 three-course Thursday deal advertised outside. You can select any entree on the menu (except the surf and turf), any soup or salad, and a dessert and it is $30. So for $1 extra you could get the usually $29 filet mignon plus a soup and dessert. This is what I ordered. The filet was cooked well, was juicy and tender, and the blue cheese sauce was merely an accent and did not overpower the dish but rather complemented it. The white truffle potatoes were a stand out, and I had to share them with my husband because he just had to have more. My husband had the crab cakes and was pleased with the dish as well, noting that it had a lot of crab meat and a lot of flavor. Several of us tried the crab soup for our first course and were pretty disappointed with it. It was a tomato-based crab soup, which it says on the menu, but it tasted more like a warmed salsa with a few crab meat pieces thrown in. I would skip this if I were you. For dessert we tried the mousse (loved it), the cheesecake (wonderful) and being a New Orleans native myself I had to try the beignets. These were not Cafe du Monde beignets, and were more doughy than true beignets (they also had a chocolate/caramel drizzle, which is odd because beignets are just topped with powdered sugar). They were good nonetheless. The wine menu could really use a re-do, which our waitress said was in the works. Overall we would definitely return for a Thursday 3-course meal and will recommend it to friends. The ambiance of the place was really nice and mellow. It's basically a basement, but they've really made it look good and inviting. We were sad to be the only people there, but we hope it was just a slow night. read more

We were walking around downtown Frederick the other night looking for a place to get apps and cocktails. We thought Tasting Room or Firestone's but we wanted something new and different. Our eye caught a tiny door across the street, "The Cellar Door". We were intrigued, being Frednecks, had not noticed this previously. While we were checking out the menu, 2 separate couples told us how delicious the food was. So, we entered The Cellar Door. The atmosphere alone is worth a vist. You enter a well-lit red carpet hallway, go down the stairs and suddenly you are in a small, dimly lit "cellar". Its very unique and refreshingly different. The menu is limited, which I prefer (figure out what you can do really well and stop there). The bar area is not yet completed but I am told it will be soon. We are sat at a wooden booth and given our menus. The menu is simple but the kind of menu where you would like to try everything. soo.... we only had apps but I will definitely return for dinner soon and follow up with another review. As I lick the last of the powdered sugar off my fingers I am surprised that the Beignets I brought home from The Cellar Door are not stellar. They are good. Beignets should be light and airy in the middle a' la Louisiana Kitchen in Bethesda. These are too dense. I don't expect stellar from take out 2 hour old beignets- but they could be better. I'm not counting them regarding this review, as it was I who had them in Styrofoam.... Regardless, I am still giving the Cellar Door a Five Star Review. Great location- nice cozy rustic atmosphere, low volume- just the way I like it. I'll be coming back in the winter as I can imagine a roaring fire and escape from the snowy streets. I've got Southern Roots and a taste for the Old Country. Does it get better than The Cellar Door's appetizer The Charleston? Perfectly cornmeal crispy fried green tomatoes, topped with slabs of Mozzarella Cheese and a peach-balsamic drizzle. Caprese salad meets Paula Dean. Magnifico, Ya'll. Let me preface dinner by stating that I NEVER finish a plate of food. Physically, I can't. Although I don't look it, I have a child sized stomach. I can't eat a whole hamburger. I always take home at least half of what I order. Especially after an appetizer. At the Cellar Door, I just about licked the plate clean. The entire menu was tempting... great selection of seafood, poultry, beef, and lamb chops that I really debated over. But we were both in a Seafood mood. Broiled Stuffed Lobster Tail- that would be a perfectly cooked lobster tail, beautifully presented over a pile of Goat Cheese Mashed Potatoes and just-right asparagus (my choice of sides). Stuffed Lobster Tail? Yep- with a crab cake. A perfect pair. Hubby ordered the Eastern Shore- I'm not sure what you would call it- a soup? Maybe- but so much more than that. Mussels, fish, huge plump shrimp, scallops, rice..all swimming in a turmeric white wine broth. Topped with toasted cibatta. He would not let me have more than a bite, but wow- it was fabulous. Service was great-low key, pleasant and the server had suggestions that were, as obvious from above, right-on. Added bonus for you that imbibe- 1/2 price bottles of wine on Mondays with an entrée. We don't drink alcohol- but the iced tea was perfect! Although I really could not take one more bite- I did order the beignets to go. I love beignets. We walked around downtown a while, talked to some fisherman at the creek, watched some skateboarders in the square, went home to brew a pot of coffee and tried a beignet.... When you walk down the steps into this basement bar, you might forgive yourself for thinking "what a dive, maybe we should go up the street to someplace with windows." But after a few minutes, you think "hey, this place is pretty chill." Then you realize, "hey those drinks weren't too expensive." Then you realize, "hey, this band is pretty good." And before you know it, you're telling yourself, "it's time to go home, I guess we aren't going anywhere else after all." Only a few beers on tap, and none of them great. I came here a few nights ago with my husband and another couple. The atmosphere is cool- you are literally in a cellar, but they did a great job with the decor and it's fun to be "underground" in downtown Frederick. The food was OK. Typical bar food. Nothing blew me away, but it also pretty decent. There is nothing vegetarian on the menu that could really be considered a meal, though. My big complaint was that our waitress and the greeter were both super grumpy. I'm talking borderline unacceptable. We all kind of looked at each other as the waitress slammed things down on the table. Maybe she was having a bad night? It was pretty busy. I'd be willing to come here again and see if the service is better. It's in a great location and has a fun atmosphere. read more

We came in for dinner last night to take part in Frederick Restaurant Week. This place is really small and, as you probably can imagine, in a cellar. There were exposed bricks and beams, red (p)leather and plush pillows abound. There are maybe 10 tables in the dining room and a short bar with a handful of high tops sprinkled around it. A couple of flat screen TVs are situated near the bar. There's also a small stage where they were having comedy night on Sunday (we left just before they got started). The atmosphere was really chill. When we arrived around 6, we were seated right away and the host pretty much gave us the pick of any table. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. I got an appetizer (goat cheese fritters) and an entré (stuffed chicken Chesapeake), and hubby got an entré (MD crabcake) and dessert (chocolate bread pudding). We split the app and dessert. Unfortunately, we didn't take photos because the presentation of every dish was really lovely. Kind of surprising because although I liked the atmosphere, it was borderline dive-y. The food tasted even better that it looked. The only bad thing about our meals is that I wish there had been MORE. And the hush-puppies. Those weren't very good. Anyway, I left feeling very much satisfied, but not stuffed. Which I guess is how you're supposed to feel but I'm an American, dammit, and I want to be gluttonous when I go out to eat. And the rest of the time. Although it's a relatively short list, this is one of the best places I've eaten in Frederick. Bottom line: I would gladly come back here. read more

All I can say is "identity crisis" with this place. We made reservations for Mother's Day. Not from the area so I guess, my bad. We got served water in plastic cups.....ok I get it, it's been a tough year for everyone, but it's Mother's Day brunch. I kinda feel this place brands themselves as a cute eatery/restaurant with a good wine list. But let's be honest, it's a sports bar. Being from up North, I don't have a refined pallet for Southern cooking but after saw what they call "biscuits and gravy", it's clear the South lost the war. Shhh.... this is our secret now. I had the Chesapeake Chicken, crab covered chicken with rice & roasted broccoli & cauliflower. It was amazing. Apparently they do quite the business for bar time but their food is what will keep us coming back. Donna had the French dip which came on a tasty ciabatta roll. Zane had the chicken tenders & fries. Being an out-of-towner my wife and i stopped in for a drink on Oct 30 abt. 3pm (giving the date because for the life of me I can't remember the bartenders name). Anyway I just wanted a glass of wine so we sat at the bar. The place is very nicely decorated and it gives off a very comfortable vib. Bartender explained it was once a bank and she pointed out the old vault which is now an office. Had conversation about surrounding area and she mentioned a couple of high end restaurants. But our waitress failed to wish a happy Mother's day (clear table situation), and just asked me if I wanted more in passing by while we were there (did not check in otherwise after food was served, water, Ladies drinks, etc). Nov 2011: Tony and I dined at the Cellar Door. It's a cozy and warm restaurant located in the basement of the building. It used to be the Brown Pelican, our all time favorite restaurant in Frederick, but it closed a few years ago.There are two sitting areas plus the bar area with a few tables. Tony and I decided to sit in the bar area for our meal. Next time we'll sit in the restaurant area, as the bar chairs were uncomfortable.We started with the fried mozzarella appetizer, which came with roasted peppers, tomatoes and a balsamic sauce. It was very good. The breading was very light, maybe panko? Tony had the Eastern Shore - a medley of seafood (fish, scallops, mussels, shrimp) with rice in a tomato and wine broth and served with garlic toast. I had the crab-stuffed shrimp that was served with asparagus, polenta and tomato butter.Everything was excellent, including the service! However, be warned, the portions are not huge but for us they were prefectly fine. No doggie bag from this place. It's definitely a place for a splurge dinner. Pricing is along the lines of the Tasting Room and Volt, also very good restaurants in Frederick. 10 March 2012: Tony and I have returned here a few more times. The food is excellent! Tony keeps ordering the Eastern Shore, which I had for the first time last night. The flavors are incredible - no wonder he keeps ordering it. We had two appetizers too - the ahi tuna and seared scallops. The tuna was prepared perfectly: lightly seared and raw on the inside. The scallops (2) were large, plump, and tender. The were served on a bed of onion risotto, which was creamy and perfectly al dente. (see photos). On a previous visit, I had the chicken Chesapeake that came with asparagus, lump crab, mashed potatoes and béarnaise sauce. It was a large portion so I had leftovers for lunch. Another good appetizer: the hot crab dip! It's served with toast and crackers. It's rich and creamy, so make sure you share with others. LOVE this place! It may seem odd to walk down steps and into a basement like space and you might want to turn around and run the other direction but don't! My fiance and I have been here several times and have brought friends. We went here on a whim the first time and that was over a year ago! The atmosphere is cool though it can get a bit loud. The food is very good. Our favorite thing to get is the "Cellar Burger" at least I think that is the name of it. It is everything that a burger should be and that other burgers wish they were. It is topped with cheese, mushrooms and onions not to mention lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Their fries are also really good...you won't want to stop eating them. My fiance took me here after he proposed to me and we had a lovely dinner as the only couple on the stage and they surprised us with dessert to say congratulations! We loved the staff before they did that. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and personable and you can tell love their jobs. read more
