I recently used the Three SIM card in Italy in my hot spot to allow both our phones to use data, as well as use my laptop. I had bought two 12 GB 365 day cards before a trip to Greece back in May/June. I had used one but not finished the full 12 GB before the trip to Italy 05 Oct-07 Nov. We used the remainder of the 1st card 05-25 Oct, with extensive use of Google maps navi starting 13 Oct (car navi was a total bust and we're glad we had the hot spot so my wife could navigate us with Google while driving). Started second card on 25 Oct with car navi use on phone through 29 Oct and foot navi through Nov 6; not sure how much of 12 GB used. I will definitely buy a new card or cards before next trip. Overall, we're happy with function. Some blip outs of network connections that required restarts, etc. but that seems to happen with all services. Only time we had any real issues with connectivity was reconnecting after dead spots like tunnels, etc.but it just took longer to get signal back in those cases. Thank God we had the signal to use for navi: we needed it -- car navi would often give what were obviously (by sight!) nutty directions while hot spot enabled Google navi was rarely incorrect. -- Appreciate your product. I recently got a cell phone from Cellular Abroad for a trip to Europe. The last leg of the trip was to Italy to hook up with some family members. Well, while I was on the train, the phone either got misplaced or stolen - still not sure. The problem was that this was the only phone number my cousins had for me and their phone numbers were stored on the phone I lost. Since I was supposed to be staying in their apartment, I kind of needed to get in touch with them - especially considering that I was pretty much down to zero cash. Anyway, I called Cellular Abroad to get them to disconnect the service and I explained what happened. They offered to send me a replacement phone with a replacement SIM card and with the same phone number that I had from their Italian office. I got the phone the next day and right when I turned it on, one of my cousins called (said it was actually the first call he made). Cellular Abroad only charged me $20 for the shipping. I guess they felt sorry for me! In any event, what could have become a nightmare actually proved to be the best week of my entire summer! I rented a cell phone for Italy from Cellular Abroad as, despite what customer service at Verizon told me, my phone was not compatible. Without a phone, there was no way that I could have had a relaxing vacation as I have a business that involves daily communication. The problem was that I was leaving the same day and still had a million things to do. An employee at Cellular Abroad hand delivered me the phone at no extra charge to the airport. On top of that, and while I was willing to pay anything at this point, the rates were fractions of what Verizon was going to charge me. I ended up having a great vacation as well so...I would give them 6 stars just for that if I could. As a follow up (the original review goes back several months), a friend of mine who was traveling with me got his bill - $900 and accordingly, he was being careful. Follow up to the above. Last week i ordered a SIM card. Turns out it was the wrong size. I leave tomorrow and today is Saturday so Fed Ex obviously is out of the question. Someone from Cellular Abroad offered to drive it to my house for free. I think that is virtually unheard of in terms of customer service - especially since it was not their fault to begin with. read more

My boyfriend Chris used cellular abroad for 10 days while he was traveling in Turkey. Chris originally had an issue with the departure date and ended up leaving later than planned. Cellular abroad charged him a late fee (cheaper) rather than recharging him the entire cost of the phone (expensive), which was cool. Chris returned on a Monday and was supposed to return the phone the following day, Tuesday. We dropped it off today, Friday, and were not charged a late fee. How nice! Chris experienced some connectivity issues with the phone but after restarting the phone each time, he was able to connect. You can drop off the phone on site. The building looked like a housing complex of some sort, especially since it did not have any apparent signs on the outside displaying "Cellular Abroad" but a local informed me that the complex is a mixed building and the return process took under 5 minutes. You can also fedex it but that costs money, not sure how much. Overall this was a good experience and we will use them again in the future. read more

Quite suprised to see so many poor reviews but, whatever...I can only convey my experience. I travel a lot and when I say a lot, I mean 6 months out of the year I am overseas. I discovered these guys about 2 years ago and have used them maybe 4-5 time. My current carrier, Tmobile, offers free data overseas but it is so slow that it is useless unless you just want to check your emails. Since I need to use GPS and since I need (ok..want is the proper word!) to watch my Netflix when I am waiting for my next appointment or the car..or to catch my next flight, what I need faster connectivity. I have bought several data SIM cards for both my iPad and my Blackberry and I can tell you that this is the way to go. The customer service has always been extremely knowledgeable and courteous with me. Maybe I am just lucky in regards to my experience with them but all I know is that they have saved me in excess of a couple of thousand dollars. read more

Finally some professionalism. I rented the talk about service for a trip my wife and I took through Europe. We visited 10 countries in three weeks! I used the phone everyday to keep in touch with my kids and get updates from my brother about our mother who is recovering from surgery. It worked like a charm. The call quality was good and there was sometimes a slight delay. I spoke with customer service twice while in Switzerland to add more talk time as for some reason the auto recharge didn't work for me in that country. The support was friendly and I always heard an American voice even though I was calling in the morning my time so it must have been middle of the night in the states. The instructions for dialing were concise and I had a US number which made it simple for my family to reach me. My wife and I used the Cellular Abroad services in 2008-2009 when we backpacked around the world for a year. We were very pleased with your services after getting a new 2009 SIM card mailed to us as our phone did not initially work in South America (Peru, Chile, and Argentina) with the 2008 SIM card that was provided with our phone. Upon receiving the new 2009 SIM card, the phone was a very nice resource moving forward on our travel around the world. It was amazing how we were able to have economical cell phone calls with our family back in the USA while we were in very rural areas, major tourist destinations, hostels, and just amazing places all around the world. I bought a sim card to use on a trip to Spain and Germany and then found out that it would not work for calls back to the US. Cellular Abroad told me basically tough, that was the way it was; I talked at length with a rep named Jonathan before making the commitment and don't recall receiving any info that the phone would not work for calls to the US. They told me to use WhatsApp, which I could have done anyway. So, I used Verizon's Travel Pass, which costs $10 US/day for all the calls I want from and within the country where I am at the moment, including to the US. It's not perfect but for my purposes it sufficed. I just scheduled all of my calls for one day. To put it mildly, Cellular Abroad is not very clear about exactly what its offers actually do so be very exact when talking with them. read more

I rented an iPhone from Cellular and was exceedingly unhappy with the experience. 1. Cellular did not register my number as required by the French government. Several e-mails from the carrier threatened to discontinue my service unless I registered. It was unnerving. 2. The iPhone 4's speaker was busted from day one. Not only could I not have speakerphone calls, but even worse was the fact that incoming calls did not 'ring' and incoming text messages did not 'ding.' I missed a lot of calls. 3. They gave me a portable WiFi hotspot that ran out of credit after the first day. Cellular e-mailed that they'd replenish the credit, but that never happened. I had to carry around their useless mini-brick for four weeks. If you go abroad with Cellular Abroad it could ruin your trip. read more

I needed to contact them recently in order to figure out how best to convert the international phone plan that I have had with them into a different one that will serve my new needs. The customer service rep who helped me (Sebastian) was outstanding. He answered all my many, many questions completely, clearly, and in a very timely manner. He explained exactly what I needed to do, how I needed to do it, and when I needed to act in order to make the transition from my former plan to my new one as seamless as possible. I traveled to Italy about a month ago and wanted a way to stay in touch with family and friends without a huge roaming bill when I returned. I searched for some options and found Cellular Abroad's MiFi device for Italy. I hadn't heard of them before but they seemed reasonable and liked their association with National Geographic, I was really happy I took the risk because it worked great! I took it to use with my iPhone and iPad. It hooked up to WiFi and was pretty simple to setup. The price wasn't bad but the best part was that I had unlimited data for my whole trip! I recently got a rental from Cellular Abroad for a trip to Australia. There were about 75 of us in our group and most of us went to Cellular Abroad for our phones. The rates were about $ 0.05 to call back to the US and all calls received were free (but people back home had to call an Australian phone number). In fact, it was cheaper for me to call back to the US than for my family to call me. Most of the calls however were to each in the group. I think I speak for the entire group when I say that the rates and customer service from these guys was top notch. We'll be back for sure! read more

My mother travels to the USA several times a year from Italy. While my cell phone from the Italian provider does work, the roaming rates are outrageously expensive. We have been using Cellular Abroad for about 5-6 years now and it makes communication for my mother extremely economical. Recently, she communicates back home mostly with an app called Whatsapp that allows you to make calls for free as long as you have a data connection. The service between Los Angeles and Rome is very good and we can communicate as much as we want for an extremely reasonable rate. Highly recommended read more

T-Mobile was completely useless when I tried to find a way to use my ipad in Europe. They wanted me to get another line with them, which, for a two week trip, was not a viable solution. The person I spoke to at Cellular Abroad was very knowledgeable and suggested that I get a data SIM card for my ipad. Worked great. My only complaint is that the group I was traveling with kept asking to use my ipad since I was the only one that had data service! read more
