All of my 3 dogs go here. We have seen a couple of vets here and they are all knowledgeable and sweet. The dogs always get good care. Not the cheapest place for veterinary care. We don't mind due to convenience of location. Boarding - definitely not the best boarding out there because the dogs are just pretty much kept in the crates. It's fair for the price they charge. Luckily, our day care will pick you them up and drop them off for free. We have the dogs go to to daycare during the day and sleep at Central at night - working well so far. The kennel techs are so nice and our dogs love them. read more

I just picked up my dog after 10 days boarding at Central Animal Hospital and I literally left in tears. I feel completely awful for having left my little Lola in such a place. Unfortunately, my normal sitter cancelled at the last minute and I had to find a quick solution, but I am mad at myself for leaving her at Central. She smelled completely like urine and they told me she peed on her bed. She never pees on her bed.... she must have been in a desperate situation to need to pee on her bed. And apparently she must have slept in it for days. When I got home, I washed her twice and I still think she smells. She also weighed 25% heavier!!!! 25%!! When I originally checked her in, I asked the manager about how the boarding was, he said they are just a place to "park" the dogs and that they usually get bored. I should have known then that this is not the place to leave a member of your family, but I was desperate. I will never make the mistake again (even though they refunded me the money.) If you love your fur baby, don't leave them at Central. I will also try to find another place for vet care. read more

Every time I have had to make a trip to CAH, it is always as pleasant as can be despite the situation. Multiple emergency surgeries, (on my own pups, and rescue/foster pups) and lots of boarding as my husband and I both travel quite a bit for work -- and our pups are still so excited to go there each time we drop off! They love the boarding staff especially. For surgeries - the facility is always incredibly clean. ALWAYS. The staff does such a great job explaining the surgical procedure and breakdown of the expenses. They are careful to go over medication and recovery time and best of all, they treat my pups like the babies that they are. For boarding - this is not a posh boarding facility. Boarding is not their primary business. Just like I don't expect a good steak from a seafood restaurant, I don't expect them to pamper my pups for $30/ day at an animal hospital. What I do expect is that my pups are well cared for and are safe. I have boarded them countless times for up to a week and guess what? When I pick them up, they are healthy and safe. I have seen a lot of negative reviews on here about poor boarding...people...look at what you are paying for before you drop off your pup. Look at what is included and don't be shocked when you pick up your pup and things that aren't included...AREN'T INCLUDED. They do offer a bath package for boarding pets that's like $25(ish) for a bath, nail trim, and ear cleaning. I usually do this after longer stays. Its on the drop off sheet that you sign when you drop off your pet (where you can also sign up for any other "extras" that you want.) read more

I took my dog to central animal hospital for 7+ years. With the recent COVID-19 pandemic, I needed to get a refill of trifexis with vet approval. Central animal hospital typically overcharges for pills - so I'll order 12 pills for $211 from 1800petmeds.com vs the $320+ central animal hospital would typically charge. My dog was chewing herself raw from having a sensitive flea bite allergy so I ordered online to arrive ASAP. However, central animal hospital would not approve my prescription for a preventative I'd been giving my dog for years because I had missed my last full annual appointment and claimed that there was "no patient relationship". I didn't want to come in person due to the fact that my wife has a compromised immune system. The front receptionist (who was new) transferred me and I explained the entire situation to the manager (Steve Karnes) and he insisted that they see my dog in person despite me really wanting to maintain as much social distancing as possible for my wife's sake. He insisted that this was a legal issue and implied that it was my fault for missing my last full annual before a global pandemic had broken out. My dog was in extreme discomfort, my wife was concerned for her health, it did not matter to central animal hospital. Out of frustration, I spoke to a few other vets in town. The best call I had was with Utopia animal hospital, where they validated how absurd it is for a vet you had an established relationship with to deny a preventative in the middle of a global pandemic. Utopia's full annual checkup (exam, rabies, bordetella, heartwork, fecal, etc.) was significantly cheaper than central's and they didn't try to pressure me for an unnecessary bloodwork test (in the past central had consistently pressured me to get this expensive test). Utopia sold me 12 pills of trifexis for less than what I could've bought it for online. They also threw in 5mg prednisolone to help with my dogs severe itching for $11. I was able to become a new patient at Utopia via curbside checkin and everybody I spoke to over the phone was extremely kind and personable. My dog is happy, my wife is happy and I am happy. I always thought central was a reasonable vet clinic because of the new nice building, but it is now painfully obvious that they have a profit motive that they will put before your pet's comfort and your personal health needs. read more

Staff turnover here has become a serious problem, and the quality of care has declined. On my last visit I dropped off my cat for a urinary tract infection. The vet tech said they would get a urine sample and give her an antibiotic shot. I also asked them to give her a subcutaneous fluid shot since I missed her usual shot at home the day before. When I returned at 4pm, I found the following: They failed to take a urine sample, even though my cat was soaking in her own urine in her cage. They failed to give her a shot for her UTI. Instead they handed me oral meds that I would have to shove down her throat twice a day for two weeks myself. They failed to administer her subcutaneous fluids "because she's cranky." Apparently no one on that week's staff had ever dealt with a stressed cat before. I ended up with a big bill for the privilege of keeping my cat at their office for eight hours with no action taken by the staff and no treatment for my cat. I even had to bathe the urine off her myself. I contacted them with my concerns three weeks ago and got a reply promising further followup. There has been no followup. I don't trust Central Animal Hospital anymore. I'll be going elsewhere. read more

We have had good experiences with Dr. Karnes. Unfortunately the vet tech Joanne there has a nasty disposition and doesn't seem think she needs to be professional . Ultimately, we want to take our animals to an office that is kind to us as well as our animals. read more

I adopted a dog last month (which is just as amazing as advertised) and after a couple of weeks, I knew it was time to find a good vet home for him (Randy). As a new resident of the Chikasaw Gardens area, Central Animal Hospital is right down the street. I scheduled an appointment very easily for the upcoming Saturday. I pulled in the parking lot that Saturday morning to a small hospital, but saw a big new one being built behind, so I knew that was a good sign that this was a good place to be because that obviously meant they get good business. As I went inside and checked in, I made good small talk with the receptionist who was very nice and then took Randy back with the vet technician only after waiting for about 5 minutes. The technician and the veterinarian were both very nice, helpful and effective and offered great advice to me, new dog owner. All in all, with a month's dose of heart-worm medication and the checkup complete, I only spent about $130, which made my roommate jealous as he paid over $100 more where he went. Also, I found out my new pup Randy is very healthy! read more

I have a 90 lb. dog, so boarding usually hits the pocketbook pretty hard, but I gave Stay @ Central a try after purchasing a groupon. I definitely appreciated the deal and am glad it drew my attention to this fine establishment. The facility is impressive and I left town with no qualms about my furry child's stay and returned to a happy and freshly bathed pup. Do not what so ever take your fury loved ones here. They are quick to sign you up for one of their "plans" in which they will give you 3 or 4 vaccines and $500 later they will act as if they have no idea who you or your pet even are. Not to mention the inconvenience that it seemed to place on the individuals who work there when you take your pet in every month for a check up. Took my sweet girls in for the first time last week and have to say I was very impressed with the entire experience. One of my dogs is a rescue and wasn't properly socialized as a puppy. As a result, she is loud and aggressive with new dogs. When I saw there were other dogs in the waiting room, I decided to wait outside with mine until the lobby cleared out. The manager arrived as we were walking the lot and immediately knew what was going on - he even took us straight in to a private room for check-in! I left the girls for the day for their checkups as well as over the weekend for boarding. When I returned for them on Monday, I was given a thorough rundown of their appointments and weekend. Upon seeing the dogs, it was clear to me they had been well cared for and were happy. I'm returning this week to have my smallest one groomed and, am sure, will be writing another happy review in a few days! read more

This place was the absolute WORST. My family had our first experience with our dog being very sick & they treated us with no compassion and provided us little information. When we asked to see the X-rays or have them sent, they were extremely reluctant and rude. There was one lady, I think she was a Vet Tech, that was one of the rudest employees I have ever met. We took a lost kitten here to get a check-up and microchip scan. Dr. Karnes and her staff were wonderful! So warm and friendly, and they were very willing to explain the different testing and treatment options to us. The story has a happy ending: a microchip scan revealed the kitten's owner; Dr. Karnes's staff worked to get in touch with her, and held the kitten until the owner could pick her up. Truly exceptional service. We are new to Memphis, and will definitely be taking our own cats here in the future. read more

I haven't used their actual medical areas but this review is entirely about the grooming process, I got a groupon for my dog for grooming there and called to book an appointment. The first time I called I was told I would be called back as soon as the groomer got back from lunch but I wasn't called back. I called a second time and then they scheduled her appointment. I mentioned that my dog is extremely skittish and that when she is left alone she freaks out, and I asked if I could wait for her grooming to be done and take her back and was told it was no issue because I had a 715 am appointment. When we arrived for the appointment I waited for them to finish, I was a little upset because when they clipped her nails they cut her quick and she was bleeding when the groomer brought her back out to me, and didn't say a word about it, I noticed and asked her and she didn't say anything about the bleeding just that I needed to pay extra because I waited on them to finish, which I WAS NOT informed of when I made the appointment. I am going to give them another try because we are going to use them for boarding when we go away for a while. read more

My dog has severe dermatitis issues. The doctor was positive that she had mange, even after I insisted it was not mange. After spending a few hundred dollars and no cure yet, the doctor said there was noting more she could do because she didn't know what was wrong with her. They are on the expensive side for pet care. I cant believe they honestly tell me they cant figure it out after I spent so much money. The staff is very friendly and place is really clean. Four years ago when we moved to midtown, I posted on facebook to ask friends for vet recommendations in the area. Overwhelmingly, people suggested Central Animal Hospital. I am tremendously grateful that they did. Dr. Karnes and her staff have cared for our dogs with empathy and compassion in addition to great skill and cutting edge techniques...all at a reasonable price. We have spent more time at Central Animal Hospital than I would like (not because I don't enjoy our visits...but because I wish that we hadn't needed to go there so often!). The preventative, sick, and emergency care that our dogs have received has always been top notch. The top three things about Central Animal Hospital (in my opinion): - Excellent care at a fair price: Let's be honest...the care of my dogs is important to me. So, am I looking for the cheapest option? Absolutely not. Instead, I'm looking for excellent care at a fair price. You will certainly get that at Central. Central always provides a patient care plan which outlines the potential costs of treatments. It helps me to know in advance what I'm committing to pay. I have been to other vet offices in the past where the bill could be a huge surprise after the treatment was given. This won't happen at Central. Dr. Karnes & her staff are also aware that we have a limited budget, and they are respectful about what we are/are not able to do for our pets and provide treatment options at different price points when possible. - Personal attention: Dr. Karnes & her staff know us by name. They know our pets, me, my husband, & even my infant daughter, calling each of us by name and asking how we are doing. I always have a million questions, and each of my questions is consistently answered with patience & concern. I never feel rushed. Dr. Karnes & her staff realize that, as a veterinary office, they not only have to treat their animal patients...they also have to coach & guide the pets' humans through these treatments. I am thrilled with the care that my pets have received, but I am truly touched by the compassion, empathy, and care that has been shown towards me. - Honesty: Dr. Karnes is honest about treatment plans. She's honest about how much they cost and about how likely they are to work. She may not have a crystal ball to let her know for sure whether a plan will work, but she will tell you the truth about the odds...even when it's difficult to hear. Dr. Karnes, Alex, Stephen, Dixie...the entire team is great here. Compassionate, realistic, dedicated. We spent a lot of time with them over the last year specifically with our older giant schnauzer. Ultimately, our beloved died peacefully at our home, in her bed with Dr. Karnes and Dixie assisting and her whole family with her. As tough as it was to lose our baby, I can't imagine going through the process with any team more dedicated to our family care and well being. Dr. and Mr. Karnes are a good example for other small businesses that are dedicated to the Midtown community. They invested heavily in their facility and created a brand new clinic a few years ago that is artistically designed (Archimania) and respectful of the Midtown Overlay rules. They are involved and participating in the community which is always important to us. We have been very happy with the medical services at Central Animal Hospital. They are typically efficient at getting you in and seen. Our grooming experiences are a bit hit or miss but overall, we are pleased. We have not tried the boarding facility. I took one of my dogs in last week for her annual exam and shots. I was happy with a price of $190 for everything, they got us in and out in less than an hour, and I had zero waiting time. The staff was very friendly but the Dr however was extremely rude. I took in my puppy that had stepped on glass and they wrapped her foot up (this took about 10 minutes) and gave her back to me and told me to sit in a room and wait. We sat in the room for 55 minutes before the Dr came and told her us her name and said that someone was coming to give us an estimate. They wanted to charge me $600 to sedate the puppy just to see if she actually needed stitches or not. I asked to speak to the Dr. and she would not talk to me. After deciding to take my pup elsewhere they informed me that I would still have to pay $100 just for coming in or they would call the cops. Keep in mind the only thing the Dr said to me the entire time was her name and we were there for about an hour and a half. They did not make my dog a priority and likely do the same to others. As I said before, the staff was great but the doctor seemed to have her best interest at heart as opposed to the dog. So sad. Would not recommend. read more

Perhaps my experience was a one off because the reviews as a whole seem to represent very happy customers, but I felt dismissed, mislead, and overlooked. I came in for a second opinion following an emergency vet visit over the weekend that required x-rays and indicated that the diagnosis from the first vet was obviously not quite on point (perhaps I should have given them another go, but hindsight 20/20). I forgot to mention on my first visit in the midst of the stress that their website says there is a complimentary second opinion, and I wish I hadn't even brought it up when I went back the next day to drop off my animal for the ultrasound because I feel like I was treated like a second class citizen from that point forward (just pay the $59 or whatever it is IF you decide to go here). It says clearly on their website under restrictions on a second opinion that, "If the client approves further diagnostics or courses of treatment to be performed at Central Animal Hospital on the date of the Second Opinion exam, the standard Office Exam fee will be waived." Ummm, would have thought going forward with the ultrasound and biopsy the next day would qualify for this.........BUT they seem to be going by the restriction below that one which states: "If the client wishes to discuss the second opinion at a later date, a standard Office Exam fee will apply. The veterinarian will not be available by phone to answer any further questions regarding the second opinion exam." (Veterinarian will also not be available by phone to answer any questions regarding results of further diagnostics or courses of treatment is what it should have said just FYI) Long story short, my cat required an ultrasound with biopsy which was done on the February 14th and I was told that the results should be in after a couple of days. After several days of not hearing anything, I called and they said that since it was sent to an outside lab it would take longer, but that they would call as soon as they had the results, which seemed reasonable to this concerned pet parent. Fast forward to March 3rd, when I call yet again and finally have an answer. Now, the real frustration comes when I ask for a copy of the results and see that the lab results were faxed to Central Animal Hospital on the 20th. Yes, that's right, I worried and my cat suffered for 10+ extra days despite them making a serious point that as soon as they received the results I would. Even better, is that I have not been contacted by Dr. Karnes either by email or phone directly since the first visit where we decided to do an ultrasound and biopsy. All communication has been through her husband who is not a veterinarian, so any questions that I had went through a game of telephone. I never got my questions answered regarding if there not being any spleen cells present on the spleen biopsy was a problem, and have not received any feedback on the glucose curve that I was instructed to do at home and send in, which I did a week and a half ago and had a question about. As long as you are comfortable being lied to about when they received lab work (I called between the 20th and the 3rd and was told that they were still waiting on the lab to send it to them) after spending $600+ and being made to feel like a royal pain for even following up and never having the actual doctor communicate any of the results to you, then perhaps this place is fine. I will say that the vet techs and nurses were GREAT with my baby and made me feel like he was well taken care of the one day that he was there for the ultrasound. Unfortunately, my expectations of having at most a 5min call from the ACTUAL doctor about the results are obviously out of line with what Dr. Karnes sees as reasonable. read more

Although I am not a frequent visitor to the hospital it has been the only vet I have used in Memphis. Each time I have come to the clinic my pet and myself have been treated first class. My best friend and cat Maxxx has been several times now and he gives it several enthusiastic "meows" after each visit. This was the first time I had to take him and it wasn't a "routine" check up. He came home after one of his nightly escapades and wasn't walking right and he explained to me in so many "meows" that he did something to his back. I didn't ask questions because he was probably out with "who knows who" doing "God knows what". He is a private cat with his with his private ways and he is, well, grey, and we ALL know about Mr. Grey's these days and their 50 shades. Well, back to the story at hand I went early to the clinic and because I was so early I figured I would have to read in the parking lot till they opened up but how convenient was it that they opened at 7:30! I walked right in and received first class treatment. Everyone was polite to us and treated us with kindness. (We like kindness). Professional and courteous we were whisked away to an examination room by a beautiful and kind nurse but not before I was asked if I wanted a cup of coffee. (What!?!? I got offered a cup of coffee at a pet hospital!! How awesome is that!!???) I explained why we were there (as discreet as I could because Maxxx is a cat that plays it close to the chest) and I was told I could stay or leave for the process. Maxxx gave me the "go ahead dad, I'll be okay" meow and off I went. I was called later in the day by a very informed and professional Doctor who informed me that she believes Maxxx had just injured himself doing "God knows what" to "who knows who" and he would probably be alright. I arranged Maxxx's pick up a little later and when I arrived I was once again treated with the same professionalism and courtesy I had received earlier. As a side note all the staff told me that Maxxx was a wonderful cat and was too cool for the other cat's shenanigans and the staff all loved him. (Maxxx, you devil). Well, we were given medicine and advice for his pain and off we went! We give Central Animal Clinic two thumbs up and four paws raised high! Thanks for everything!! read more

CAH is an excellent vet practice - I have had many dogs and cats over the years and they have been treated with the utmost care and sensitivity. They have a state of the art facility, a hot line to some of the best specialists in the area, are open to second opinions and very accommodating when there is an emergency or need to euthanise. I boarded my dog here on one occasion because I had a Groupon for it. I had no problems the first time. I just boarded him there for two nights last week, however, and immediately upon taking him home, it was clear that he had fleas. He was heavily scratching himself, and I picked 3 fleas off of him in about 5 minutes. I bathe my dog regularly and use flea and tick preventative (K9 Advantix). I called and spoke to the manager the next day they were open, and he said there was nothing they could do. He never apologized about the situation and instead spent time educating me on flea and tick prevention even though I had stated that my dog is on preventative already. He said that they check all dogs for fleas before boarding, but that there is simply nothing they can do about it. I never received so much as an apology, and there was no attempt made to remedy the situation. I made it clear that they were losing me as a customer and that I would not be recommending them to any friends or relatives in the future, and he still offered no apology or means of remedying the situation. I was satisfied with them the first time, but I will certainly not use them in the future. There are much cheaper places to kennel your dog. I appreciated their weekend pick up availability. However, I will not be using them again and would not recommend them to anyone because of the flea problems I have experienced as a result and the very poor customer service experience I had as well. read more
