I still think about how little regard my birth plan was given, if any. I was flexible and hoped…read more that in difficult circumstances that I could trust the doctors to practice good medicine. I was told that if there were no complications they would offer the things in the plan, which was delayed cord clamping, skin to skin contact for the first hour, no pitocin, support for breastfeeding. One of the nurses came in just be for delivery had clearly just had a smoke and I could smell it on her... she also had her nose out of her mask (covid). After about one minute the cord was cut, and they took my baby to do whatever it is they do, measure poke etc. the doctor yanked my umbilical cord to get my placenta out and the cord snapped. I'm not being dramatic when I say o felt that in my soul. Then from the reflection in the glass above the doctor stuck their whole arm inside me to rip out my placenta. They then ordered pitocin (sp) bc I was bleeding more that they liked!? I had no complications and none of the things I asked for were provided. I'm not a mean person and don't like writing this out but if you have any hopes of having some autonomy in giving birth I would question going to Delnor. I forgot to mention that another doctor who was about to change shifts said "we need to keep an eye on that" but didn't specify what was of concern, bc... there wasn't anything, of course your gonna keep an eye on things but you don't point that out to a woman in labor. How anxiety producing. Maybe I'm a sensitive person I just really assumed there would be some effort to provide the things I had hoped for.... For weeks leading up I would speak with the Dr and ask if what I was wanting was doable. I was reassured numerous times that every effort would be made for those (evidence based) post natal supports. It still bothers me and I don't want others to have to go through what I did. Maybe it wouldn't be a big deal if I just deferd everything to hospital protocol but seeing as I asked and was comforted towards trusting them it stings, still. My daughter is 2 1/2 now and this is just some random Tues night that I happen to be looking back and feeling helpless. Was it the worst, no. Was it kinda f-&cked up, yes. I suffered from post-partum depression for almost 2 years. I really didn't want the pitocin bc of fear of emotional reactions. I've had terrible reactions to hormones in the past. I don't doubt that the pitocin given after ripping out my placenta played a role in that darkness that followd birth: I wish there was more I could do to make people aware. I wish I had gone to CDH like many people suggested but I had recently moved to Batavia and Delnor is so close.

We find it prudent to highlight Cindy M., who comforted, supported, educated, and showed her passion for care from the moment we met her. My family felt protected and loved as we spent the last few days under the care of Cindy. She is a massive asset to Delnor, who went above and beyond in all avenues of her profession. Cindy deserves to be recognized for her performance. I would highly recommend Delnor Maternity Center for future new life.

Emergency Care (and some Follow-up Care) -…read more NOTE: I have a lot of Good Things to say about CDH ("Central Dupage Hospital", they seem to call it!), and a few Bad Things to say, as well. In the final equation, the "goods" outweigh the "bad", and leave me with 5 stars. My Health Issues are my own, and not the Hospital's. I have taken this into account. I will also reference comments made by other Reviewers... and I will not judge your own opinions, but only the comments others made. Let's acknowledge - right up front - that Hospitals are ALWAYS understaffed. After all, who in their right mind would want to deal with people like me, or are writing negative reviews on Yelp, whining and bitching about their Entitlements? And do this for an entire Career of 12 - 14 hour shifts? Not me, bucko. I went to CDH ER after visiting the Warrenville Urgent Care Facility, for a *severe* nosebleed. As I near the end of my Tenure on this miserable planet (whose Joys are compounded by His Awesome Puissant Orangeness and its Clown Car Administration), I've seen a lot of things - but NEVER a nosebleed like this. Think of a fast-dripping faucet, just shy of a constant stream. It literally scared me. My Bride and I worked at home for 10 hours trying to stop it, and could not. So, we climbed in the truck. Warrenville Urgent Care took a look, and recommended we go to CDH ER. We walked into the ER. Warrenville had obviously called ahead - the nice ladies at Reception saw us, and motioned me toward a waiting gurney and Nurse. There was zero wait time. Fast-forward 4 hours of serious effort by the doctors and nurses and a couple of what they call "Rhino Rockets" stuffed up my snout, and we had it quenched. We agreed that the Probable Cause was "Eliquis", a blood thinner recently prescribed to me to combat another Health Issue as I crawl toward the grave. A blood vessel had ruptured in my schnozzle. But there was also a collateral concern - I had lost so much blood during those 14 hours (circa 2 liters, we "bevnap estimated"), that the Doctors wanted to monitor me awhile. My Hemoglobin level was 7.1. So they admitted me, with my agreement. The ER Experience? Check, check, and check. No issues, professional, courteous, and caring. Up to the Second Floor, Cardiac. In Cardiac, the Doctors, Nurses, and Assistants came in and introduced themselves. I spent the next 4 days there, and reflecting on the experience, I have very few complaints. I'll list 'em below if I have room, or in a follow-up post. But overall, they took very good care of me. The Cardiac Experience? Check, check, and check. No issues, professional, courteous, and caring. I'd like to personally thank Nurses Josh and Isabella, who looked out for me over several lonely night shifts - I was insomniac, and if I slept for the next three days, I really can't remember it. But, hey: this is a review of the ER, so let me tangentially address some of the Yelp comments I saw: * "The problem with most ERs is under staffing." - Yes, indeed. That's called economics. Nearing the end of my life, I can't say I've ever found a solution, except to stand up for yourself where needed, and don't make a fuss if the issue is triaged-out. * "They know how to spend on remodeling" - Yes, indeed. I would also venture the opinion that *this is the best-looking Hospital I've ever seen" *. And, why should they not work to make their Facility as attractive as they can? Construction workers are not Doctors, and there is a shortage of Doctors. * "No one came to check on me with any regularity." - Yes, entirely possible. That's why there's this widget attached to the bed with a "Call Button" on it. This comment suggests a 'passive approach' to one's own Health Care - waiting around for things to happen to you. Enable yourself. * "Ran test and wanted to run more." - Yes, indeed. Corrective process for sacs of meat (e.g. Humans) follows a procedure where you must wait and observe the outcome of the last action . * "They nickel and dime everything." - Yes, indeed. That is the current state of the American Medical "system". Vote to change it, sir. And, to punish the Orange. The Bad's? Well, I took a look at my own notes, and nothing was important-enough to bear mentioning. I'll call-out a few, just for drill: * Their signage (Facility-wide) is abysmal, and does not support a first time visitor. * There's a Valet available to help you park your ride after arrival. You'll never see him, due to the poor signage. Now I am approaching the end of my Character Count (as well as my Life!!), so let me stop here. But please keep in mind - these are people who have devoted their entire lives to helping people, undergoing the strictest training of which I'm aware, and working shifts that exceed what I would EVER consider putting up with myself. Can they make mistakes? Sure! But give them the grace to be human every now and then, and question them if you see an issue. Stick up for yourself. Peace.

The Surgery Center, as implied, is an outpatient surgery facility. The Inn provides for more extensive "recovery" than is normal for an outpatient center (in my case the stay at the Inn was a few hours but could be as much as a couple days). That's the nuts and bolts...now the experience: It starts with a pre-op visit a few days prior to make sure that I'm ready, introduce the facility and review what I am to expect. The impression is of an exceedingly qualified, confident and professional team proudly providing the very best care in the very best and most comfortable (think spa vs. hospital) environment. Surgery day: I check in at about 8:30 AM. From then on, all of my first impressions prove correct. These people amaze in how well they anticipate all that is or might be needed to keep me calm and comfortable. After full hip replacement, I move to the Inn by early afternoon, have a spa-like lunch, a couple of short physical therapy sessions....and walk out with aid of a walker by late afternoon. Across the board, the people of VASC and VMI amaze in their dedication to provide the best care to their patients and their ability to make what is usually a frightening event into a painless, stress free and routine experience . If the words surgery and pleasurable could ever be considered in the same sentence , it would be here. In all this praise of VASC and VMI, I don't mean to overlook or slight those deserving of the greatest praise. A great surgical result requires a great surgeon. Dr. Shawn W. Palmer D.O. and all of the staff at The Hip and Knee Center are absolutely the best there are.

She was in the ER for over 24 hours before being admitted. Unfortunately for the ER staff, they were understaffed on a busy weekend. She was admitted with an unknown condition. We just knew that it seemed to be affecting her quickly. The physician staff, which are brought in from other hospitals like Edwards and Northwestern because tbey don't have their own, we all AMAZING. The nurses, CMA's, CNA's, physical therapy, speech therapy staff, even the housekeeping staff, were all incredibly caring and kind to us. My mother ended up having West Nile. She was in for 2 weeks, we almost lost her. Dr. Ines Casey was her infectious disease doctor was with us every step of the way. After she was discharged to a rehab facility she had to be readmitted again, only this time she was closer to Edwards Hospital. It was like night and day, her 2 weeks stay there was terrible. No one even wanted to understand what had happened to her or what she went through. They thought she was just some old lady with dementia, which couldn't have been further from the truth before West Nile. But we lucked out when we realized Dr. Casey was on staff at Edwards and was asked to see my mother. She then explained to doctors and staff her condition. I just wanted to thank Mercy's staff for all they did for us. My mom is now almost back to her normal self. I know Mercy use to be a non for profit and now it's owners are for profit. I know they are understaff there, they should really rethink how they treat their nurses and staff members because they are some of the greatest people we've met.

My wife had a bad case of the flu and we wound up at the ER late one night. She was seen almost immediately. The staff was pleasant and attentive. They listened, which I don't always see from hospital staff. The nurses were really wonderful - available and helpful. I can't entirely say the same about the staff doctor - I didn't get his name but he was a young guy who, while I'm sure is a very good doctor, didn't have the best bedside manner. And, when I had a question for him and couldn't get him to come to the room, I walked over to the desk where he was chatting about sports with others. When I tried to interrupt, he told me to wait and he'd see me when he was available. While I understand that everyone deserves a break now and again, being available for your patients is paramount. Clearly, not working and not being able to answer a simple question because you're talking about unimportant things is not what should be expected. I witnessed the the receptionist send a man to a nurse for a voucher, which the nurse said he'd find out for him. The nurse then left, came back but did not say anything to the man. The man waited until he went up himself and asked him only for the nurse to say they don't do vouchers. Back to the receptionist he went, only to have to go back to the nurse. Their basic response was, "oh just wait a little longer." Not busy at all, total time: 3 HOURS. 2nd visit: We went to BHS first. They sent us to ER. They escorted us this time. They stuck us in the dirtiest room I've ever seen. Dirt on the walls, gum package on the back of the bed. The "family waiting room" was only a little better. All but one chair looked liked they had been peed on. And it sounded like an airplane hanger. We had to explain why we were there to at least 4 separate people. It was very trying as we had never gone through this before. Not to mention the rude nurse that treated us as if we were bad guys. She did not want us around our family member and made our family member feel bad for wanting us around. It took two trips to the desk and OVER AN HOUR FOR A SMALL CUP OF WATER. When all was said and done, we ended back at BHS. We finally got that assessment and evaluation and my family member was admitted. Slightly busier than before, total time: 6 HOURS.
