I'm honestly shocked at the level of service here considering the daily rates. The place is anything but sanitary--my bed sheets weren't properly washed, and to make matters worse, there are bed bugs! The rooms have a horrible odor, almost like urine, which makes it unbearable. On top of that, some of the counselors aren't even certified. It's mind-blowing how this place is allowed to operate. I really can't recommend it to anyone. It's an absolute mess. They also allow women to go in with men to do drug tests. If roles were reversed it would be an issue. Some things to take into account if you were looking into this place. read more

My dad was there for a head trauma My dad was there for one month And I was fighting every day with the insurance company to get him out of there. The first day he arrived to the apartments. Supposedly they were already ready for him. they did not have none of his medications. My dad has a really hard time to adjust to meet people and every day he had a new caregiver by the way with no experience caregiver's have really long nails they scratched my dad every time when they moving him around one time I arrive they took him to shower. He was screaming so I walk in and I ask him what's wrong and he said the water is too hot. Caregiver said no water is fine so I check the water and it was really hot. The caregiver give me a really nasty look and I told her you need to be careful. The water is hot. She totally ignoring me. My mom was there every day so I can't imagine if she was there how bad they will treat him. I feel sorry for the patients who can talk defend them self be careful to leave them by themselves. But therapy was really really disappointing that I have to move him from there because he was doing so good with the therapist read more

Some great people work at CNS Bakersfield! Racists also, my wife was at this location for almost a year, they offered me to talk to a psychologist, this person made me feel worst, he started talking about politics and because I was just outside the facility watching the impeachment of Trump, and talked about imigrantes , I told him at that time that I was a Citizen and that I had the same rights that he had , and the only thing that was different was that I could not run for President. He told me "I was born here and I went to war . He is Racist I told the managers, set down with one of them. No response. If you are an Immigrant , think 3 times. Also a little detail, they allowed my wife to fracture her right hip, and on the same day a lady that said to be a manager of the apartments where the patients stay, told me that I had to take her somewhere else. No words from the administration. Funny thing , is always the Republicans, this has happened to me two many times. I got to this country and worked my ass off, more than most of the people I know. For serious CNS rehab, I would go to an inpatient facility that is recommended by your inpatient hospital team, and followed by home health that includes weekly visit with a nurse and 3x per week rehab with whatever is needed. There are only a few in the Bay Area, so ask around. There is no rehab specialist physician on-duty at this facility in Emeryville, and we did not have a good experience with the therapists or the director, who has a PhD in Psychology. The client was declining and they believed it was due to the lack of the family involvement in supporting rehab while at home. They missed signals of a serious change. I would not recommend this facility unless the patient has a mild deficit that needs rehab, and is very young and otherwise healthy. read more

My son was in a car accident and suffered a TBI. We went to Centre for Neuro Skills in Bakersfield after two months in hospitals. Nic showed up in a tilt space wheel chair unable to hold himself in a sitting position, he had a feeding tube, was unable to speak, and incontinent. Nic was cared for 24 hours per day by staff who truly cared and pushed him to be independent. We were at CNS four months and now Nic can walk, speak, eat, laugh, ride a bike, jog, kick around the soccer ball, his memory is better than mine. Nic was elated to finally go home as are we, his adoring family. CNS played a huge roll in helping my son have a future where he will be able to go back to school and work again. Thank you to all of the staff. We love you and we're ever grateful to you always. I read Yelp reviews before taking my son so if that's what you're doing, please don't hesitate. This is the best thing you can do for your loved one. You will have case managers and if any issues arise, they will be on top of it. Just updating my review from 5 months ago. Our family is beyond amazed and pleased and blessed to have this place! This place makes miracles come true! My mother has been here for 5 months and because of this place she is walking, talking, eating ect! All in which we were told she would never do again! She had an Aneurysm which ruptured while she was driving causing her to be in a traumatic car accident resulting in a brain injury! My family and I love CNS!!! My dad had a brain aneurysm followed by 2 strokes. He spent over a month in the hospital and we had 1 other company than CNS trying to get him as a temporary living resident but fortunately that fell through. My mother and I decided to have CNS take him in because we felt that it was the best place for 24 hour living assistance as well as 8 hour physical therapy to get him back on his feet the fastest. We knew that's what my dad would want the most since he was unable to speak, eat solid food, drink water, or use the bathroom. This decision has been one of the best decisions we have made as a family. One month after being with CNS, my dad was able to sit up in a wheel chair and began speaking. By 3-4 months, he was able to stand with assistance and was able to cook and clean. In the living facilities, it was kept up by the residents themselves with the assistance of the CNS workers who share shifts and are specifically assigned to these really nice apartment homes. So we had the privilege to meet CNS employees Robert, Kim and several others who kindly and patiently assisted my dad. We deeply and sincerely thank CNS for everything that they did for my dad. They go above and beyond our expectations to care for his needs and wants to get him better. My father now walks, uses his left arm and leg limitedly, speaks clearly and is able to tend to his company part time. Keep up the good work CNS!!!! I spent three months at CNS after three months of recuperating at home and fighting with Blue Cross just to get in the front door. I left before I was ready, but my ego was pushing me to go back to work, which was a mistake as a teacher. I made friends there and worked very hard to improve. Another few months would have probably benefitted me considerably, but I had a lot to prove to myself, friends, family, and coworkers. My time was spent with certified therapists and their minimum wage assistants. Three hours five days a week at a cost of $475 a day seemed a bit pricey, but the clients who stayed at the CNS village were paying $48,000 a month. I would like to return for a tune up, but I doubt insurance would pony up the checks. All in all, it was a good experience . I had a miraculous 80% or better return from a moderate traumatic brain injury and with help from a committed attorney, received a modest settlement from the state for my accident that has allowed me to make improvements on my home. read more

My husband suffered a ruptured cerebral aneurysm in December 2005 and spent three months in therapy at CNS. The cognitive therapy was extremely effective, and he was able to return to work (half time) within three months (doc predicted it would take six.) We met people from all over the Western U.S. who came to CNS for traumatic brain injuries. We were so fortunate to already live in Bakersfield, but I truly believe it would be worth traveling here from somewhere else to get the benefit of their expertise in treating TBI. read more

My experience in this place has been amazing. My husband suffer from a brain injury 4 months ago. He is been in this place for 3 months and the improvement that I see is unbelievable. He started to understand more of the every day life, and to learn again how to do everything, something that I didn't know if will ever happened again. Every day he learn something new and the support that they give the family is incredible also. I'm so happy to see that I make the right decision when I bring him to CNS. I was a patient at the Center in 1995 following a horrible auto accident in August 28, 1995. I was diagnosed with severe frontal and parietal brain damage, a shattered right femur, broken broken right knee, right cranial nerve damage and hearing loss to my right ear. Dr. Ashley met with in Arizona and evaluated me. I was sent to Bakersfield for rehabilitation and maybe stay there permanent in the future. Today I have my associates degree in general studies from Phoenix College. I have my bachelors degree as well as masters degree from Arizona State University in criminal justice. My time there was alright, I guess, but I highly recommend you have someone who knows you by your side through your little "tests", and definitely at "review time". Some of the tests measure how well you can find things that you NEVER shop for, in a store that is POORLY marked with signs. Recipe for failure! And review time, even though my test scores were above average, was geared towards them keeping me there and collecting a few thousand bucks a week. It is a business, so that's to be expected. I checked myself out AMA, and went back to my life. Sure, I "woke up", so maybe I didn't need that place anyways, but I've obviously had an experience so, since they've emailed me more than once to post a review (and never to follow up and see how I'm doing!), here it is. My father was a patient here last year after he had a stroke that eventually killed him a month ago. During his time here, after one phone call where she was absolutely not present, my mother decided that I should not be allowed to call him. He himself didn't make this decision. This particular institution decided to oblige her and did not allow me to speak to him after that first time. I cannot comment on the level of care he received; I do know that he was alienated in bakersfield, a city over one hundred miles from where he spent most of the last thirty years of his life and had never been before, and was told that his wife only flew down to visit him on weekends. Would you want your dad to spend part of his final year in a place that upheld decisions based on a conflict between you and your mom, or one that respected the choices of someone who went through the motions but had little to no genuine love for their family? read more

CNS has an excellent rehabilitative model in place that ties patient goals to proven testing and modalities. They hire some excellent therapists who are truly committed to the patients they work with. That having been said, the business model they employ stretches the effectiveness of many therapists to beyond a reasonable, effective level. Their patient evaluations are thorough and on point, but once a client gets into their system, that client seems to get increasingly assigned to therapy "assistants" whose certifications and actual qualifications are often suspect. We witnessed multiple occasions where our family member was handed work sheets with little to no instruction as a "structured" portion of assigned therapy. It was quite clear that a licensed "lead" had directed some young assistant to hand out an assignment without providing the necessary training to support the task. We also observed patients of extremely varied levels of recovery being assigned to "assistants" to carry out their assignments in small group settings.. Many of the patient/clients were injured workers, often non-english speaking laborers who were non-critical participants with minimal family support whose insurance had placed them into CNS. Most of these individuals simply "go with the flow" and are unaware of whether they are being assisted by a licensed therapist or an unlicensed assistant. In spite of often-diluted assigned rehab services, individual tuitions are not adjusted to reflect this loss of individualized attention. While the program offers incredible potential for patient neuro rehab based upon its' research-based design, I believe their business model often unfairly burdens their licensed therapists and compromises the delivery of individual rehabilitation service to their clients. read more

My husband had a brain hemorrhage almost a year ago..he was admitted to CNS for an inpatient stay of about 8 weeks,( after fighting with our insurance company)... I believe (along with God) that CNS was was the single best treatment that we were able to get for him... The staff was warm and kind, but firm in their resolve to help him get back to as normal as he could....the 24/7 care that he received was outstanding at the inpatient facility! The support that families receive as well sets this facility apart from others as well, as TBI's affect the whole family! CNS understands this fact! I recommend this facility for ANYone who have suffered from a head injury.. My husband has since gone back to work and is living a happy life now and is probably 90% better! read more

We left UCLA rehab for CNS-Bakersfield for what we thought was a short temporary stay until being transferred to CNS-Encino. It was not what we had hoped for as while we were there we discovered the unfortunate flaws that made us incredibly uncomfortable to continue or rehab with their facility. read more

You keep asking for me to give you a review this may not go as you planned but neither did my time at CNS Encino. To start it was nice when they sent someone to my house to evaluate me and promise me that I would have an apartment rented for me somewhere in the san Fernando Valley. At that point I was ok with spending 30 days in a nuero rehab facility. Then I got notified less than 48 hours before I was to check in, not really enough time. Then upon arriving there I was told to leave my luggage in this tiny office room. And I got yelled at for being late when I was told to show up between 10am to noon. My wife and son brought me to the facility. I was immediately thrown into a class without any type of tour with my family first. Then I was forced to ride in their company vehicle. To what they called the Martha house upon arrival there I first noticed that I didn't have my own apartment like I was promised. Then I notice that every inch of the facility is covered by cameras. Then I get assigned a room and next they confiscated All my medications and won't let me take any pain medication until they could get a hold of a "nurse". During my 30 days in hell my room got flooded I was made to fell like a prisoner. I only saw there dr 1 time during my stay and that was 2 days before I left. Also I was experiencing symptoms of a heart attack my last 3 days there and I was denied the ability to call 911 or have my wife drive me to the nearest hospital. I was told to breath through the pain. 3 days after leaving this facility I found a cardiologist who I explained my symptoms to he had me do a treadmill test and I had a heart attack 6 minutes into my test then I was rushed into the hospitals cath lab to find the problem and try to stent. The stent failed and I was scheduled for open heart surgery the following morning where I coded and I was revived and the open heart surgeon made me a new LAD artery I spent 16 days in that hospital. read more

My son had an amazing experience at CNS. The best rehad center! CNS was a blessing to my son and our family for his recovery.

We were referred to CNS and were hopeful that their services would help my fiancé recover from an injury that left him with severe traumatic brain injury.  This was a new and terrifying experience for us; we were relying on the staff to guide us through the process.  After being evaluated, my fiancé was accepted in the Emeryville location.  After two weeks in the program, we were called by the staff and told that he needed to be transferred to the Bakersfield location as that location had more staff and specialized behavioral therapists.   We weren't told that there were resource restrictions at the Emeryville location.  We chose the Emeryville because we lived near by and wanted to be part of the recovery.  The staff at Emeryville recommended the move and made us feel like we were negatively impacting his recovery by not considering the transfer.  After discussion, we approved the transfer because we wanted the best possible outcome.  The Bakersfield location was 4 hours away and having him that far away left us feeling unsettled.  Our main communication channel was through the administrative staff, better known as case managers.  Updates/reports were sporadic and often contained conflicting and or inaccurate bits of information.  The 'case managers'  did a poor job of documenting patient history and pertinent historical information had to be reviewed with them on a regular basis.  As a facility touting brain injury as a specialty, they hire staff that doesn't know how to handle those living with brain injury.  Standard protocol is applied for all patients, even when it's widely known that no two patients are alike. My fiancé was easily distracted and couldn't focus for long periods of time.  The facility was working to help him gain focus and become less distracted, however there were times that he'd be agitated by his inability to do so.  We assumed the staff would know how to handle these patients.  However, that was not the case.  My fiancé  was restrained when he "acted up".  In one incident, he was restrained by five staff members and was left with bruises on his wrists and ankles.  He also suffered a black eye and a bump on his head. He had rug burns on both wrists and feet and those burns showed up a few hours later.  Scabs from those rug burns are still evident a month later.  He was held face down for over 25 minutes.  This all happened while his mother was in the facility.  She was pulled into a room, away from her son and was told not to interfere.  She could have easily calmed him down had they let her, instead she was forced to sit in a room and listen to his cries for help.  When the incident was over, she insisted that he leave the program.  The staff happily obliged and ran to get discharge paperwork.  My fiancé was forced to sign the discharge paperwork while restrained face down and the staff put a pen in his mouth and forced him to sign.   This facility was founded by a man with great intentions of helping his brother and others suffering from brain injuries. I imagine that he would be disappointed knowing that he has representatives operating his facility in this manner. It is unfortunate that a center built on good intentions could have such poor execution.  If you are looking for state of the art care with compassion, this is not the place for your loved one. read more

I came to CNS with a TBI, traumatic brain injury, from a serious bicycle accident. While the hospital nor doctor referrals did nothing to help me understand what was happening to me and how to get my life back; a random person I me in a stretch class told me about CNS. After first contacting CNS, they were 100% generous and helpful getting me into their program; and, I finally felt like someone "out there" understood the nightmare I was going through. Once in the program; I questioned everything and the staff was always patient, informative, yet firm which I needed since at that time because I could not connect the therapies to my injury. Now, 2.5 years later, I look back with full understanding and appreciation for CNS methods and training which were instrumental, along with neurofeedback, in my recovery and return to a full life. Now that I think of it, I still practice several of the methods for speaking, remembering, and interacting that I originally learned from CNS -- they've become a habit. Also much of my self awareness about my "new life" came from consistent repetitive lessons at CNS. Thanks to everyone at CNS, your dedication makes a difference. read more
