He acted like he owned the place) reluctantly asked what I was looking for. I told him I was looking for travertine for a fireplace. He pointed to a sample of tumbled travertine. When I told him I was looking for travertine that was more linear he just shrugged, and seemed to not have a clue about what I was looking for, nor expressed any interest in showing me other options. Then he said "well, if you have any questions, let me know" and walked away. I felt as if he simply dismissed me as a waste of his time. Too bad that we used CTD for three bathrooms, spending thousands of dollars several years ago. The way I was treated, not only will I never go back, but regret they ever got our business. Had a fabulous experience buying tile for my kitchen backsplash from CTD. Helen Buckley found a comparable tile for half the price of the Pratt & Larson I was considering, and did a super job of providing color samples and updates on shipping, etc. I will definitely come back for more tile needs. My stone order was cut to my specifications, was as beautiful as the sample, and arrived EARLY. Customer service was fabulous. When I picked up the order and asked how best to care for it on a day my salesperson was out, another employee sat me down, explained all the maintenance do's and don'ts (I had already paid for it, so no sale was expected) in a polite and positive manner. I came here after having an unbelievably bad experience with a different tile showroom, so my expectations were pretty low. Lauriel has an amazing design sense and is great to work with. She was able to take my half-baked vision for my bathroom, read between the lines, and propose designs that enhanced my original vision by leaps and bounds. She is patient and effective-- she listens to what you are saying and brings so many ideas to the table until you are completely happy with the look and feel. I haven't ordered yet so can't speak to the rest of the experience yet, but felt the need to post a positive just based on the incredible design services Lauriel offered. read more

My experience with Cyndi and other staff members was excellent. I am building a home and needed guidance with 3 full bathrooms. Over a period of 8 months, I made appointments with Cyndi to help guide my decision making for each bathroom. I changed my mind several times over the course of the 8 months and Cyndi was patient, informative, and gave me hours of her time to help me find the right solution for each bathroom. Cyndi was not the only staff member who was helpful. I am surprised to read some of the negative reviews as over the course of 8 months, I experienced professional, caring customer support. read more

This place is amazing! After visiting dozens of tile places I found this place. They have every kind of tile you could ever need for kitchen bathrooms and even fireplaces. Today I called because I need a few more pieces of tile to finish our bathroom and Ryan gave me all of their samples so I wouldnt have to order a full box and wait for delivery. We are pretty easy going people, and I'm not sure I've been more annoyed. This is our second bathroom remodel (the first went rather smoothly). Unfortunately, CTD was terribly disorganized while we were clients and unable to manage our orders in an effective manner. Some staff members in the showroom are wonderful (that's why I couldn't bear one star); others just ok. We hit one roadblock with them after another for our bathroom remodel. Alecia the showroom manager is amazing! Having done several projects with her, I would never go anywhere else. CTD has a great selection of tile and gave me excellent advice on how to optimize my space and maximize my budget! The service desk is amazing and they even gave me a small bag of grout so I would not have to buy a whole box. I have just purchased tiles for a new bathroom with the help of Ceramic Tile Design's excellent Design Consultant Diane Szczaepanski. She was very knowledgeable in guiding me through the huge inventory and helping me to decide what would look great in my new bath. CTD even emailed me pictures of the tile I was considering to help me make my decision. I will certainly return to CTD to consider tiles for any projects in the future. read more

We purchased tile from this store for our new bathroom. The sales associate was a disaster.... she ordered the wrong tile. My husband went FIVE times to pick it up and it was not there (though he was told repeatedly that it would be). He finally got the tile home. We made the mistake of not inspecting it carefully. The tiler used it to tile half the floor while we were at work. Though it looks similar to what we ordered it is not the same. It is too late to do anything about it. Just don't use Sabrina if you visit this store. read more

I am a homeowner and I need a tile shower shelf. The salesrep told me that I should "call the manufacturer since they don't sell anything like that". They are the largest tile distributer in the USA. I think the salesperson didn't want to be bothered. Gee, too bad he didn't know that I am also planning a major tile and flooring renovation. I'll do business elsewhere! read more

I have been here a number of times, purchased tile for one bathroom and now, for another. I've always had a great experience, but today's stood out and I was compelled to post. Cyndi is amazing - she was thoughtful, listened and gave me great advice on design and what fits within my price range. She has a knack for design and great customer service and a true keeper. The icing on the cake today was when the owner invited me (and other customers) to enjoy a home cooked Thanksgiving dinner (lunch) in their lovely break room. No really. I was amazed by the kindness and felt like a great small town sort of business (in a big town/San Rafael)...everyone made really wonderful food, very welcoming to me (who was not necessarily going to buy anything today) and I sat and ate with Cyndi while she worked on the order and chatted with me. You don't find this in most places and I was so struck by the fact that it was just a kind and neighborly thing to do (while running a business). Thank you! read more

BEWARE-the management is fundamentally dishonest! We would recommend avoiding Ceramic Tile Design, San Rafael. We have done a number of bathroom projects over the years and have never encountered this level of dishonesty. We ordered pale gray tile and I arrived home from work to find a bathroom wall covered in dark gray/black tile. The management initially was apologetic in seeing the dramatic difference between what we ordered and the tile we received, and initially promised to remedy the situation since the wrong tile had been installed. They later reneged and argued that it was our responsibility. After endless hours of representing our position and being lied to, we're reporting them to the Better Business Bureau and going through our credit card company. We corrected the problem at considerable cost. Beyond the financial ramifications, it is horrible to put your trust in people who lack professionalism and ethical standards. Consumers beware--if there's a problem, this business and those who manage it, will cheat you! read more

The second star is because some customers seemed happy working with the designers. My own experience was a one star. This might be the place to go if you had all day to plan your project and wanted some decorator choices. I stopped in to find flooring and was asked to wait indefinitely. No one asked me if my question was quick or gave me any indication of how long the wait would be. It was not appropriate for me to wait around at that time. The worst thing, that deserves one star, is that the person that finally gave me five minutes of her time told me that the tile orders take 8 weeks and no one else can do any better. False! Most other flooring stores can receive a tile order in three days. If your job can't wait 8 weeks like mine (water damage) then just about any place in Marin is better than this one. The "quick" order floors were no different from Home Depot. The store could be drastically improved by an appropriate reception. There are a number of other tile stores in the area and at most of them I received courteous help and short order times. read more

Thank you CTD for helping create the bathroom of my dreams! After months of searching for the perfect bathroom floor stone I made the trip to CTD and was amazed by their showroom. They have a larger selection than most tile and stone shops and beautiful displays and idea boards. The front desk check-in that other reviewers have referred to certainly is different, but it's really about making sure that you get dedicated one on one time with a designer to help you with your project and that is real customer service. I've walked into other shops and never been noticed or approached, so I'd rather wait awhile and know that the help I need will be provided. What other tile shops and designers were unable to find, Daniel did by truly listening to my vision and found the most beautiful marble to pull my bathroom plan together. Having remodeled a kitchen and bathroom with natural stone before, I knew that natural stone can be unpredictable, but never the less, I was devastated by a reaction that occurred with my stone during the grouting process of the inlay. When things go smoothly it's easy to give 5 stars, but sometimes things do go wrong during construction and it's how a company handles that situation that really gives them the opportunity to show how many stars they are worth. I have given CTD a 5 star rating, because in addition to their great help they were exemplary in helping guide me through my stone disaster. CTD reached out to the stone manufacturer and my installer to come up with the best solution to my issue, which ultimately ended with a bathroom truly more beautiful than I could ever have imagined. As a client I felt like they truly cared about me and my dreams and I thank them for their amazing support and customer service from the bottom of my heart. Thank you CTD!!! read more

I just don't understand the negatives people. This place is one of the rare gems of Marin. They have an absolutely fantastic selection of exceptional tile - including many you won't find anywhere else - plus incredibly knowledgable people. Hey, the place can get busy and so there are rules: sign in when you arrive and they will call you when it's your turn. It usually only takes 5 minutes for someone to get to you but when they are slammed it can take half an hour or more. Why does it take so long? Because they are giving fantastic in-depth service to the person in front of you. You will feel great about that when it's your turn, and the cost of that is that you have to wait your turn. Think of it like a fine restaurant; a 20 minute wait would be no biggie. As far as the service being "hit or miss" - I've been helped by most of the staff at different times. They are ALL knowledgable and friendly. Of course I have my favorites just based on my own personality, but competence is never an issue. read more

We had a problematic and costly experience at the San Rafael store. First, our tile order was delayed and they failed inform us of a new delivery date as promised. This lack of communication was was a problem throughout our experience with CTD. We had to call numerous times to get information about our order. When we needed to add to our order and asked that they modify the number, size and type of tile to reflect the change in design, they failed to follow through and we ended up purchasing tile we did not need. Our first order had a number of broken tiles and this caused another delay. When we complained about the unneeded tiles and delays in delivery, the salespeople were rude and dismissive. We were told to contact the owner with our complaints but he never responded to our emails to him. When we went to other tile stores in the area and shared about our experience, we found out that many people have had similar complaints about Ceramic Tile Design. read more
