My family has been part of Cerritos Chinese school for a few years now, and I highly recommend it. The language classes are great - we don't speak Mandarin at home so I was nervous it would be too hard, but the teachers are great at working with the kids to meet them where they're at and build up their skills. Both my kids have attended Cerritos Chinese School for the past three years. We started in the parent and me (effectively daddy and me despite the name of the class, lots of dads are showing up!! ) and preschool class and slowly made our way. The kids are learning through songs, stories, coloring, immersion; As the kids get older there are also activities like kung fu, dance etc. in particular (and to my surprise) my kids love the cultural events (lunar new year, moon cake festival...) and it's a great way for them to learn about and get excited about the these cultural traditions. The teachers and volunteers are nice and enthusiastic and I'm highly appreciative of the work they do! Both my kids have attended this school since preschool and my oldest is now in 3rd grade traditional character class. It is an amazing place to gain exposure to Chinese culture and language and there is a vibrant community behind it that maintains a healthy student population and a variety of events to participate in. Class is 3 hours on Sat and one hour is an extracurricular/ cultural activity which the kids love, you can take things like drawing, calligraphy, Chinese Yoyo, and even Kung Fu. We make the drive all the way from the South Bay every week because that's how much better this school is than some of the alternative weekend school. It's not bad since it means you get to chow down on the local Cerritos food and go shopping at Ranch 99 to boot. Highly recommend checking it out to see if it fits your educational needs. read more

Cerritos Chinese School is truly the best Chinese community in the area of its size, especially for families and kids. My wife grew up in Cerritos with this community, which helped with her good Mandarin speaking and writing, and the most of all - appreciating Chinese culture! The school offer not only formal Mandarin classes on Saturdays, but also extracurricular clubs and community events. For example, one year we volunteered with the school at Disneyland's Lunar New Year event, helping guests make lanterns and introducing its origin. We also attended multiple times an annual cultural event at Cerritos Mall, where the school would perform Dragon/Lion Dance & Kung-fu. So this is our daughter's first year attending the school, in the Kindergarten Zhu Yin class. We sat in through the entire first session and were very impressed. Her teacher, Wei Lao Shi, had clearly put in a lot of efforts in teaching and preparing for the class. For example, unlike some elementary schools nowadays that rely on screens and digital reading, Wei Lao Shi sat down with the kiddos in a circle and read several Chinese story books, not only focusing on teaching key Chinese characters, but also prepared interactive questions and had many conversations with the kiddos about the story. Through a few classes now and as a native Chinese speaker from Taiwan, I can really tell from the quality of the curriculum, materials, and textbooks used that it's a structured Mandarin education. Unfortunately, extracurricular classes are for students 1st grade and up, but my daughter is already looking forward to the many unique ones offered, such as Chinese dance, knotting, chess, etc. We also noticed that the school is very organized, with regular communications and many volunteers/facilitators helping in class and across the campus. If you want your kiddos to build Mandarin foundations while also meeting new friends and becoming a part of this local Mandarin-speaking community, I highly recommend Cerritos Chinese School! read more

Cerritos Chinese School has been a mainstay for the Chinese community and all who want to learn Chinese language and culture for 50 years. The teachers deeply care about students learning, the community is fantastic (I have connected with so many likeminded parents), and the activity classes like Kung Fu, Chinese Knotting, Chinese Yo-Yo and even Pokémon are classes the kids love and aren't offered anywhere else in the area. Plus, this is by far the most cost effective and efficient activity in my kid's schedules. Most activities are $150+ for the month for one hour of instruction a week. CCS is around $80/month averaged out for 2 hours of language and 1 hour of activity every week! I figure if I give my kids a foundation in Chinese now, when they reach high school, they'll be able to test very early on for AP Chinese and get that out of the way so they can focus on their other AP classes. And CCS has the most affordable Chinese AP prep based class in the city. Also, isn't part of Asian American identity enrolling in the cultural school of one's origin? I really wanted my kids to find a home in their identity through the community and CCS has provided that in such a meaningful way. read more

As a child, I attended/completed Korean school from Kindergarten-8th grade and I believe that getting kids started early with language school is super important (before they realize they are the oldest one in the class, find the learning "impossible" or mistakes "embarrassing" etc.) A bit of background: My husband is Chinese-American, and I am Korean-American. We speak English at home. This can make doing homework and reinforcing language practice a little challenging... however, thanks to the teachers and school, my son feels an immense amount of pride in/connection with his culture and language. We've seen so much improvement in my child's Chinese literacy. I also can't believe the school is entirely run by volunteers/teachers that volunteer their time. We have been at the Cerritos Chinese School for 3 years. They have a great program that can accommodate a student of any level. Signing up was a bit intimidating because I don't speak Chinese and I did not really understand the process or what level or type of class would best suit my daughter. But after speaking with the principal and a bit of trial and error we found a great class with an incredible teacher. They seem to do a pretty good job of matching the student to the right class. Over the years I have always found the school administration to be quite receptive and helpful. The parental involvement is better than I have seen in any school. This is a wonderful school! Please note that the classes are once a week and held at a local middle school - there is no actual school building for CCCS. Their offices are also located in Cerritos where you can also rent space from them as they have 2 suites. This is a non-profit school and the classes are wonderful. We have one child in the 1st grade class and another in the preschool class. There are MANY cultural electives to choose from as well once they have reached the first grade level class. The teachers here are wonderful, loving and always attentive to the children. They definitely do this because they love to teach Chinese. The additional events such as the carnival and Chinese New Years banquet are very well organized and fun. They've recently revamped the website as well. Check them out! read more
