Quote was way too expensive. I did not use them. Their quote was 4x what I ultimately paid for the job.

There were admittedly many challenges to painting my 115 year old home. The house had not been painted for perhaps 25 years. Over the years the thick stucco finished had been patched many times with different textures and different shades of white. Mature shrubs grew up against the walls which also had moss and mildew growing on it.Parts of the wall were splattered with mud. Vines had covered portions of the walls and when taken down left tiny tendrils everywhere. The trim was three different shades of grey and dark blue and needed to covered with white. I hired CertaPro to paint a stairwell with very tall ceilings, as well as repair damaged plaster near a window. Additionally, they painted window trim. The two painters doing the work arrived on time, and I could tell they really cared about the quality of their work. They were careful, covered everything, and cleaned up well before leaving. The end result was phenomenal. They really transformed the space. I absolutely love my new wall color!!! On top of that, I really appreciate that the painters took COVID safety precautions, wearing masks during all conversations. Believe it or not, some contractors I've had did not do this. These guys were very pleasant to work with all around. Mary and Ottis (my contacts for the estimate and scheduling) were also extremely responsive. What I liked: One crew removed wallpaper, plastered many holes left from re-wiring, installed new wallpaper and painted the repaired walls. The price was really good. Ottis, the owner, was very nice and really took his time going over the scope of work with me. What I didn't like--catching them standing on my antique dining table to paint the ceiling. Having them break an antique folding chair. Having them get paint on an antique upholstered wing-back chair and sofa. Having them drop paint on the newly refinished floors and not clean it up so that I had to carefully remove it after it dried. Having them wet my walls (to remove the wallpaper) so thoroughly with no protection for the floors that water ran down into my basement and made a big mess. Some of the wallpaper had bubbles and wrinkles, and where they cut the mural panels too short they patched it in without letting me know of their mistake (which is easily visible). There were a few other things, but these are indication enough of the lack of care shown to my home and belongings. My professional cleaner said that after doing 250 post-construction cleanings, she had never witnessed such complete disregard and lack of care for the way the home was left when the work was completed. Hopefully, my home was the exception, but I would limit them to painting the outside of a home only. And only if you do not have valuable plantings or lighting near the home. read more

It was a slow start scheduling for the exterior of my home painted but this was due to the long Chicago weather not Certapro end. We had to wait until the temperature was above 60 degrees for at leaste 3 consecutive days so the paint can dry properly. Certapro was professional, communicative. The owner Ottis came, looked around, and sent me an email with how much the job was going to be. The main reason I chose Certapro over the 4 companies I reached out to-- they gave me the lowest quote and financing. We had some trouble with one of the painters who refused to touchup the back siding (work looked patchy). Certapro rectified the problem right away and sent another painter to finish the job. I am pretty frustrated over all. I agree with another poster, Ottis was super nice. He took a lot of time to explain the work and make recommendations as to what should be done and how. The first guy who came was also super nice but his work was just poor and the more I looked the worse I realized it was. Paint on a duvet cover, paint on a lamp shade, paint on a cloth blind which he tried to rub off and now has a hole in it. They told me he would fill in dents and scratches in the wall which was not done anywhere. There is a 12 x 9 paint drip on my bedroom wall now. There are paint specks all over my floors which I am still cleaning from months ago. Paint on my furniture. I had a wall which needed fixed as well. Ottis said they would cut out the section and re-drywall it. Well the guy didn't. He tried to patch over it and made it worse. I had drywall tape coming off in various locations which I asked them to fix and he quasi patched over it -- you can still see where there were issues. I did not say anything until I realized just how bad it was. I showed Ottis and Mary pictures of much of what was wrong (and didn't complain about a lot that was) and they agreed it was poorly done. They were pretty busy but I was super patient with them. They got "their best" team to come fix various of the issues. I will say that team fixed a ceiling patch job wonderfully which the other guy could not manage. It was hard, they worked hard, and they did amazing. However, the side wall is still horrible with the same drywall and the same issues even after they fixed what the last guy made worse. Mary was not particularly friendly the second time around which I found a bit incredulous because I was super patient and kind given the magnitude of the mess ups the first time. She said she would talk to the 2nd team but its her best team the gist of the conversation was that because they are so good they could not have possibly done anything less than great work. Her attitude was a massive turn off, particularly given there were literally a dozen other issues I could have asked them to fix and now I wish I would have. I would also just like my money back for the basement wall patch that I paid for and did nothing to improve where we started but they essentially disappeared and I am tired of dealing with the attitude and poor performance. Ottis was supposed to paint an exterior canopy and interior room for us. We were booked and two days before they called us to reschedule cause of some problem with their crew not being available. I accepted considering it to be genuine. I was told my painting job would take two days and I was rescheduled for a two week later date. When the crew came they said it could be done in 1 day. I was happy that this would take less. At the end of day when the crew left it was dark so I asked them if I could inspect next day in light. They agreed. In morning I noticed that the trim and ceiling that I had asked them to fill with caulk had cracked throughout the room. I had my whole house painted 5 years back except this room cause it was wallpapered and did not look like it needed painting then. No caulking in other rooms had cracked till now. Anyways I called these guys and the lady in office Nancy said that she would tell me when can the guys come in the afternoon or later in evening to fix this. I waited when it was evening I called he and it went to voicemail so I left a message saying I waited all day at home for the guys to come. She said they can not come this week as they are busy with their jobs. She will see if they can come next week. I told he that how can they be busy today as they were originally supposed to be at my house today. She did not reply (Which meant they lied trying to get more money by showing it was a two day job). I kept on requesting her to do it earlier as I was already postponed to which she said caulking was not part of the contract. I have the contract and it is very well mentioned in it so I told her. She did not say anything just said Ottis will call me back. Ottis has not called till now. What a bunch of unprofessionals. The only point in going with a professional company is customer service. Otherwise we all know that they are much costly than regular painters. As for exterior worked Ottis has taken full payment and was supposed to mail us the warranty but still has not done that. Ottis and the team at CertaPro Evanston did a great job with a few exterior painting jobs at our 6 unit condo in Ravenswood. Ottis gave us a great quote to refinish our exterior wood door, wrought iron fence, and all of the exterior window frames in the building. He was very responsive and his team finished the job in only 2 days. During our walk through at the end, we did see a very small area that we had questions on, and the supervisor on the team didn't hesitate to fix the spot right away himself. The owner is a super nice guy, very professional and explains the work that will allegedly take place in great detail. I will begin with that because it is downhill from there. I have a Mediterranean style home which was built in 1920. A solid brick beauty adorned with floor to ceiling french style windows. The Windows are what give the front of my home great character. They are wood and custom, to ever replace them would cost a small fortune. The crew that was sent to do the work were 4 guys (really nice) unfortunately their execution of the work was a nightmare. I am so angry and disappointed. They began with the main windows at around 145 ish and we're done by 4 pm. FAST is not good with this project. It was sloppy, careless. I had to leave the windows open until 1130 pm so they would dry and when I went to close them 3 of the 5 wouldn't close. I had to set my alarm to glass shatter and place delicate glass in front in case someone tried to enter through my windows while I slept. Upon closer inspection ...metal flashing that shouldn't have been painted was painted. AND when the morning light came the problem became even more evident. This product Mad Dog was supposed to be used to seal and adhere all the peeling .. but it was all loose and bubbly and paint still didn't adhere to the wood. This job was not cheap either. I am awaiting resolution. If this work is redone and acceptableI will update my review. Signed, Angry and dissapointed. read more

Initial walk with Ottis was great, but the execution of the work was extremely poor. Tried calling when they were doing the work, and no one answered. Finally got a call the next day and the lady (Mary) didn't care at all with how unsatisfied we were. They blatantly didn't do what was on their contract (power washing to create an even, smooth surface), and the end product was rolled/brushed out unevenly. It honestly looks like s*** and I could have done a better job. The only reason we didn't is because the quote was cheap and we were focusing on other house project and decided to outsource this one. DON'T LET THEM LEAVE IF YOU AREN'T HAPPY WITH THE PRODUCT. CALL IMMEDIATELY. STOP WORK AND SEND THEM AWAY IF YOU DON'T GET AN ANSWER FROM THE OFFICE (which is unacceptable during working hours, especially after calling repeatedly). read more

THey were the lowest quote out of 5 and they painted the living room and stairway. They came on time finished in one day. They did not spill one drop which is amazing since I walked around all day in black socks hovering. They were so quiet the cat was not even bothered. The paint looks perfect. Easy to get scheduled, but the paint work on my deck was off color and chipping immediately. We agreed the off-color wasn't a major issue and that they'd try to fix the chipping (within two weeks it was noticeable). I was told they'd come back before end of summer to fix it, got two calls stating they were busy but would be sure to schedule soon...Finally at the end of August I called and left a voicemail and sent an email and I never heard back. I'm completely unsatisfied with the quality of work on my decks and wouldn't recommend them based on the response to that issue. read more

I would not recommend these painters to anyone, in fact, I've already referred business to one of the other painters that bid on the job I gave to CertaPro. Also, the friend who recommended CertaPro to me, when hearing how my job went, has stopped recommending them. This was a big job -- my entire place was painted -- so I thought CertaPro would be motivated to do a great job. The experience was like sausage-making -- while they got the job done, getting to the end wasn't pretty. The painters declared two different rooms were finished that were clearly not complete. The paint was not applied properly to completely coat the walls. At the end of each day, CertaPro promises to call to provide a status...I had to call to find out because CertaPro didn't call me. And the team pushed back when I pointed to paint that was splattered on the carpet -- the two facts in my favor the splattered paint was the same color as the paint going on the walls, and I had the carpets cleaned a couple days before that room was painted (which they knew). The painters did fix all issues so the end result looks good. However, overall this was a disappointing experience. read more
