Had a really great dinner here last night. Order at the counter place and they bring the food to your table. Nice person at the counter took our order and helped us decide what to get. Cute and casual spot with picnic tables and booths inside. They had Bob Ross painting on TV. I got the mixed place so I could try two things and I got the lava chicken and garlic shrimp. The lava chicken was just spicy enough and the garlic shrimp was plump and delicious. Their mac salad offered a nice balance to the spicy chicken. My only critique of my entire experience was that the rice under my shrimp was a tad greasy and they could have drained the shrimp a little better? My husband got the ribs. They had great flavor and the coconut-lime slaw was fascinating. I expected it to have some coconut in it or something for the coconut flavor but there was actually coconut milk in the dressing and it made for a nice palate cleanser after the spicy and savory ribs and noodles. Menu and food were both real good! Unfortunately they were out of almost everything which was disappointing. I asked why and was told they are always out of everything. I asked if its because they are always busy and was told no, they don't buy whats needed. Im understanding to the challenges of food cost ect, so im willing to over look. Beyond disappointed. Service was mediocre, no one greeted me, just awkwardly walked up and started to order. Seen food was ready but I didn't get called until about 5 mins after and no one else was waiting for food. Also, since no sauce was offered, I assumed it was packed (it wasn't). Garlic shrimp was very basic and nothing special. The garlic chicken was TERRIBLE. I looked at other pictures posted here and looked at mine, it looks and tastes like it was sitting in soy sauce all day, it was cold, crunchy, and extremely salty. I could not even finish it. Always looking for good comfort food & Hawaiian plate lunches always hits the spot for me. Not every place that calls themselves "Hawaiian" is good, but this place comes close. I walked in and the Hawaiian decor stood out immediately, the Hawaiian flag, the vibe, everything. The menu board offered to many plate lunch options and more. It is counter service, somewhat fast, very casual. The premises were clean and even with the dark interior, it was still appeared to be bright inside. You can have an option to sit in a booth or at picnic-like bench tables--family style. I ordered the kalua pork sliders, Hapa fries, beef teri rice plate and 2 SPAM musubi to go. *My sliders were very good, balanced well with the amount of meat, juicy, mild smokey flavor. It was a bit messy eating it. The only complaint was packing. The coleslaw was served on the side of the sliders and by the time I got to campus, the bottom buns got mushy and soaked with the coleslaw dressing. I was able to enjoy my first slider--it was the furthest from the coleslaw, but I was unable to pick up the next 2 without it falling apart. I'm sure it would have been different had I dined in. *The teri beef was okay, good flavor, but I thought the some pieces of meat were thicker sliced than what I am accustomed to seeing and there was so much onions. The mac salad was okay, a little too much mayo for my taste. *The SPAM was very good and reasonably priced...better value to buy 2 for $5 than pay $3 apiece. The only observation was the SPAM, was on the thin side--could be a little thicker. So the ratio of SPAM to rice was not balanced. *The Hapa fries were tasty, they were crisp and not greasy, but they were definitely shy on the furikake seasoning. I was just a light sprinkle...so much so that I'm not sure if that was worthy to be called Hapa fries. For dessert, they offered ube (purple yam) cheesecake with either Haupia (coconut) or Chantilly cream or ube cookies. I had to save something to look forward to on my next visit. They should add a chocolate haupia pie or a mac nut pie to the dessert offering and maybe expand the SPAM musubi menu to include a breakfast version with scrambled egg omelette or a chicken katsu version. While the reviews have been all over the place, my dining experience, albeit for take away, was very positive and I would not hesistate to return for my comfort food fix try other items on their menu. Their menu items seems to be a little more authentic (& tastes better) than the other Hawaiian (franchise) restaurant down the street. We came here on a recommendation and it was great. This Hawaiian restaurant is very spacious with numerous booths and bench seating. The staff was great, helpful and friendly. The menu has a lot of items, but if you stick to what you like, you can't go wrong. I got the mixed plate (choice of two meats) with Kalua pig, teriyaki beef, Mac salad and rice! The Kalua pig was well cooked and tender. It was very tasty with that distinctive smoked flavor. The Teriyaki beef was very good, but more on the sweeter side. My son had the Fiyah ribs, rice and Mac salad. The short ribs were very tasty with that Lava sauce (Sweet and Spicy) it was basted with. We also tried the Da Kanak snack and Spam fries. Da Kanak snack is meant to be shared, with lots of fries and Spicy chicken, topped with pepper Jack cheese, spicy mayo, and furikaki. So good! The spam fries were my favorite! Katsu battered spam strips, deep fried to a golden crisp, and drizzled with spicy mayo! Give me more! Other menu items that caught my eye were: Poke, island tacos, and burgers. CRAZY things happening here! I've never seen a chef (tall, wearing a black t-shirt, no beanie, in case he tries to lie) openly vaping on the food, in the kitchen, in the rice cooker, then asking his manager to eat the food while there's MULTIPLE hungry people waiting to be served and fed. "I'll feed you when you're done making the orders" - potential manager working the register. I called in for a pick up. I just moved back to Eugene and had to come here because it USED to be my favorite Hawaiian grill in the city. I showed up and went to the side where it says "grub hub pick up". Surely this is also the regular pick up line. I stood in this mythical pick up line for 15 minutes, staring at my order for 10/15 min. As someone that's worked in service for 3 years it's pretty easy to say "hi are you here for pick up? You actually need to stand in this line, I'm sorry." She paid 0 attention to the fact that I'm standing at the grub hub pick up register less than 4ft from her. What if I had a grub hub?Would she have cared? Unlikely. To be fair, the children she was corralling in the back was probably extremely frustrating and stressful when you have 25 people in line 3 groups waiting for pick up and all tables full with the chef vaping and laughing in the back for ALL to see. Super fire program they got going here. Oh, food was cold after standing in the mythical pick up line for 15 then needing to go to the back of the line (that was touching the door) for another 20. Great set up for MAXIMUM mistakes and unhappy people. Top 5 worst restaurant experiences for me. Sadly the quality of the food has also been diminished. Will return again. Overall the food was good and comparable to other Hawaiian food joints in town. Soda wasn't great. Fried noodles had little to no flavor. Mac salad ahead potatoes in it as well. It was alright. Pork was juicy and tender. Yum. The interior was lacking cleanliness in most all departments. Floors were extremely sticky. I rinsed my shoes off in a puddle outside afterwards- ha! Table and booth had leftover rice on it. Overall not thrilled by the cleanliness in here. It wasn't too loud or anything crazy. The ice machine was broken but there was a large ice maker next to it for serving yourself. Kinda gross to have any and everyone touching that ice scoop openly & then it laying back in the ice. I can't say we will be racing back in unless we get a craving and want to try another menu item out. Wish it was just a bit cleaner in here. The lady at the register was so kind and helpful. I ate there for the first time today, and as of right now, there is no other place on the entire mainland that I will recommend for a real, Hawaiian style plate lunch except for Chacha's!!! They are da best!!! They have got the delicious grindz... from Kalua pig, garlic shrimp, chicken cutlet, katsu, loco moco, served with two scoops rice and your choice of cabbage (slaw), tossed salad, or the good kine mac salad, to sweet Hawaiian Sun drinks and more. The restaurant is clean and spacious, has a welcoming feeling with cozy booths and also beautiful wood picnic style tables that can easily adapt to big family groups or smaller parties too. We received our delicious food quickly and the kalua pork was nice and hot, the rice was sticky but not mushy, the Mac salad was so yummy and not watery. Ono. In summary: Love this place!!! I stopped by a neighboring business for a drink and noticed this new place so thought I would give it a go. The space is really nice and open with plenty of seating. I liked the variety of the menu rather than just run of the mill chicken/rice/Mac although I didn't deviate too far from the norm. I ordered the spicy chicken with their specialty rice that has onion, spam, veg and egg and it was great. The chicken was perfectly cooked and I loved the sauce. Their Mac salad was really good. I've tried this place multiple times hoping that the last time was a one off but every-time I'm disappointed. The chicken katsu is always dry and over cooked. The macaroni salad is basically just macaroni with mayo. I can't remember what the first plate I ever got from there was but it was like someone accidentally dropped a salt shaker on top. The food items looked fine in appearance, BUT the shrimp & chicken could have used as a salt lick out in a field of cattle. The cherry on top of the experience was that the to go container was made from styrofoam I live in "Springtucky," so that's not too uncommon in that town, but to see it being used in Eugene was disappointing. I'm tempted to run over to U.S. Chefs Store (Cash & Carry) and spring for a box of biodegradable to go containers for them to hand out to their customers. Overall I would say the food here is worth trying, a few things were really tasty and a few things either lacked flavor or was overcooked. We enjoyed the kalua pork and garlic chicken and would get these again. The volcano beef was overcooked and a bit tough. The rice, noodles, and mac salad were pretty standard.
