In South Asia, the phrase "storm over a cup of tea" perfectly captures the lively conversations and passionate debates that often unfold over a simple cup of chai. After 14 years in the USA, I remain a devoted tea enthusiast, starting each day with a . It's second nature to me to visit friends just for tea. Yet, what I've missed most is the tradition of going out specifically for tea--not just to a coffee shop or an Asian tea spot, but a place with an array of chais where friends can linger, chat, and enjoy snacks well into the night. In cities like Houston, Chicago, Dallas, or New York, such spots are common, but Seattle has long been waiting for its turn. Finally, it's here--right inside Kabab House, a separate space called Chai House. It's more than just a tea spot; it's a place that captures the spirit of an "adda" , where friends gather to gossip, laugh, and relax. The variety of chais, traditional South Asian cold drinks, and snacks that are essential to tea culture make it stand out. The décor is thoughtfully designed to reflect the rich tea-drinking traditions of South, Central, and West Asia , adding to the authenticity of the experience. During my visit, I sampled the Kashmiri chai (pink tea), regular chai, and a few cold offerings--Rooh Afza, Shikanjabeen (a sweet mint lemonade with pink salt), and mango lassi. I also tried the vegetable samosas and chicken puffs. The Kashmiri chai was a standout--rich, creamy, and fragrant with a perfect balance of spices and nuts . It's the first time I've encountered this in the Pacific Northwest, and it did not disappoint. The Shikanjabeen was another highlight, a refreshing burst of lemon and mint , with a delightful blend of salty sweetness. The chicken puffs were delightful, and the vegetable samosas were packed with flavor, pairing beautifully with the chais. I've always had a soft spot for Rooh Afza with milk, but this time I tried just the regular one, and while it was good, I might stick with my usual choices next time. The staff mentioned that nearly all their spices are made in-house, even the mango puree for the lassi , which adds a special touch to the offerings. They've just had a soft opening, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they refine their menu. A few tweaks--like more frequent batches of fresh chai, freshly baked puffs , and using filtered water for ice to avoid any lingering taste from Washington's tap water--could elevate the experience even further.. They are working on a separate entrance which will further elevate the place. Overall, Chai House is an exciting new spot that's bringing something special to Seattle.

My problem is the sign advertises they are originally from Hokkaido which brought memories back of Hakodate and all the other cities I visited in Japan as well as all the utterly amazing desserts. I couldn't eat desserts for months after returning because it didn't compare to the delicious food I ate there. I anticipated amazing desserts. Instead I was very surprised with how sweet everything tasted. I know it says they're straight from Japan but it makes me wonder if it was created sweeter than what they would create for their Japanese customers. For how expensive it was I found only an upset stomach and questioning my financial choices. One of the workers there was super helpful and enthusiastic. She greeted every customer, offered samples, explained menus - she was a bright sun of energy. Another met a solid middle ground giving recommendations and answering questions genuinely. The third did not want to be there and heavily brooded. I'm not sure if he thought he was being quiet or if he just didn't care as he openly talked to himself about going home soon trying to urge time to move just a little faster. It was ok, not great.

The ingredients may seem simple, but the execution is top notch. The bun is the star. They bake it fresh. Soft and tasty. And the egg is fluffy and filling by itself. The spam and furikake rounds it out perfectly. The piggy buns are a delight. Tried all 3 and I prefer the custard and taro. The molten custard is good too, but it can be messy. The half-star drop is due to service. It's not bad, but it's just not the warmest. They are busy, so I do recommend researching first before you order. That will eliminate any awkwardness. There isn't any dedicated parking for the cafe, but we were able to find street parking around the block. Once you enter inside the building and cafe, it is surprisingly spacious. There isn't that much seating available though. On a nice day, there is outdoor seating available. I ordered a Vietnamese Iced Coffee and a Mint Mojito Iced Coffee. These were drinks very basic. Nothing extravagant about them, especially the Vietnamese Iced Coffee. The Mint Mojito Iced Coffee was a tad bit better and you could taste the mint in it. If I were to return, I definitely would try other drinks or even their food items here. The customer service here was okay. Not very interactive. There wasn't any issues, but it was a bit awkward for whatever reason.
