I would usually love to go here, but today I went in around 6:15ish with a friend who had never been before. Unfortunately, we had a bad experience. I asked for one salted watermelon raspa with candy, pickles, and chamoy. My friend ordered a chamoy lemonade slushie and it came out to $20. I was a little shocked at the price, but just assumed they raised their prices like everyone else. Turns out the young girl charged me for a raspa, lemonade, and a candy, pickle, chamoy CANDY TRAY. That explains the high price. When I received my plain raspa and a messy to go box of candy, pickles, and chamoy, I was very confused and a little upset. Let me just say this: I love how much product we were given and honestly, it's a shaved ice. It's hard to get it wrong. If it were only based on the product I'd give a 3, maybe 4, however, due to customer service, it has to be a 1. When we got there, the wait was long, whatever, no big deal. However, their card reader was down at the moment and we didn't have cash on us. So the lady at the window, I assume, wrote our info down and told us she'd charge us later. We normally wouldn't let people take our card info and write it down but it's only $5 or so dollars right. Fast forward to this evening, my husband checked his bank account and we were charged $7. Now, if it were $5 plus Texas tax, it wouldn't amount to $7. Maybe if there was an upcharge for credit card payments, I could see that HOWEVER the lady said nothing about that. We ordered half pineapple, half tiger's blood and the lady said that it's no extra charge for that. So what's the discrepancy? Probably just a mistake, we're human, that's okay. So my husband politely reached out to the email given and I've attached the email correspondence. Not only was this person unprofessional at first response but she insinuated that even with a PICTURE of the one product we purchased attached, that it was still the wrong product? Like we'd hide or alter that information for two freaking dollars. Maybe she didn't see the other side of the snow cone that was clearly yellow then red, signifying it was two half flavors. Then she talks about Venmo? Which we don't have but maybe that's the way they do their business transactions? Idk. Then we gave her the bank transaction picture, not attached here for privacy reasons. On the final correspondence, she does own up to her actions and honestly, finally replied in the most professional manner, which she should've done in the beginning. And GRANTED, it's human error, we make mistakes, that's okay. But to *imply* that your customer, who gave you their money and helps your business, is a liar - didn't have to say it, that's what implying means- is not okay. And we never once said this business overcharges ALL their customers however now that it's been brought to our attention, it has to be posted online. I mean, if they're taking peoples' credit card information because their card reader is down, just turn them away because you can only take cash at the moment, that's safer than taking their info down and or having discrepancies like this situation. Also, we're posting it online because who knows, other people might not bat an eye to a few dollars extra charge. But it's better to let other people know. All in all, being overcharged $2 or so dollars is not a big deal, that's not the issue. The issue is that the people that run this business will write your card info down, possibly overcharge you, and when you bring it up to customer service, you get subpar and snarky replies as if you're the one wrong EVEN with picture proof. I'm sure their product is good however their customer service and business ethics needs work. Please consider serving tacos and the best chili I've ever had at your new brick and mortar location. I realize some people like cold treats in cold weather but I'm not one and would frequent this place year round if you did, especially in the summer when I could have a full meal of a chili and raspa. Service was a bit spotty, probably because the employees are in training but I was given some chamoy bears and a bottle of water to make up for it. Interesting mix of music was played: disco and 70s R&B when it was at a capacity, big band and jazz when the only other couple present were elderly, and then switched to early aughts alternative as soon as they left. Please also consider having different sizes of raspas available. I'm sure their huge size is a plus for your most loyal customers I can never finish mine and it is a waste to throw it away but if I take home it will usually melt by the time it can make it into the freezer. read more

The original Chili Queens started WAY back in the 1800's and ran up until the Great Depression. These wonderful ladies have decided to resurrect them and are serving up some serious Texas (read no beans) Chili. Obviously they have Chili but it is what they are doing with the chili that has me begging for more. For example "The Roosevelt" is a tamale topped with an egg, cilantro, fritos and of course chili. It is my personal favorite thing on the menu. You can also get a chili cheese dog or a not so basic frito pie. Also for the vegetarians they offer a veggie chili, I can't lie I will never try that but it is there for the non meat eaters. Although the main emphasis is chili they also have a brisket taco that was very good. I do recommend that you take some heartburn medicine before you go too heavy on the Chili menu. TapaTapa tweeted that he would be on S. Alamo, so I hopped in my car to get my nosh on a gorgeous Friday night. I pulled into the newly opened Alamo Street Eat Bar (owned by the Friendly Spot folks). When I pulled in, I didn't see the TapaTapa truck. But there was the bold white Chilli Queens truck. Three young women were busy inside finishing prep for the night's service. With a name like Chili Queens, one would expect a heavy emphasis on chilies. I was thinking rellenos, and a couple variations of chili. What I found was an emphasis on one thing: chili (no beans, thank you). The menu board offered several chili-centric dishes. There was a frito pie, a veg chili, a bowl of chili and something called The Rossevelt. Take two competent south Texas style tamales, smother them with really good meaty chili, and then top the plate with two sunny side up eggs garnished with cilantro, a couple slices of fresh tomato and a fiery serrano pepper. Who does that? The Chili Queens, that's who. And they do it really well. The chili is virtually grease free, with a subtle smoky chili flavor. I was expecting a bold, heavily spiced chili. It is not a heavy-handed chili powder approach that one expects from cheap eats. The meat is chunky and tender and well seasoned. And true to its roots, not a bean in sight. It is a very good chili. Taken together, the tamales, the chili and the sunny side up eggs make for an eclectic dish that is easy to approach. It is unexpected and it is worth a visit. Everything is Bigger in Texas, or so the saying goes! When it comes to all the other fifty states we have the biggest hair, the biggest tacos, the biggest boots and now, the biggest sno-cones! Yes, I must reiterate, the biggest sno-cones. The Chamoy City Limits is an off shoot from the people who brought you the food truck, The Institute of Chili. It is a take on the same sno-cone truck that goes through your neighborhood except on steroids. For all intent and purposes these are closer to the shaved ice family rather than to the raspa varieties we all have grown to love. Chamoy City Limits takes the experience of a sno-cone truck and translates it into the vibe of a food truck. In many respects it is like a food truck. Young ladies with Star Wars shirts take your order and it onto a ticket like at a food truck. On the side there are chalkboards with all items and available flavors to include: mangonada, picadilly, fresa, pina, cones with Sour Punch Kids, etc. You place your order and servers scoup huge heaps of ice with syrup into an even bigger plastic cup. The prices aren't bad at all. It is typically five to six dollars for one as big as Maryland. My only critique is the turnover time for placed orders is kinda long. I also noticed that they made sno-cones utilizing an assembly line, which didn't seem efficient. I spotted a guy on his phone pacing back and forth, as he was waiting for an order; growing more impatient with each minute. In my opinion it would be best to have each server knocking them out one by one then moving them out. And yet I had their chili mangonada with jalapenos on top. At first I didn't understand the whole idea of a jalapeno as a topping. But the mix of sweet and hot seemed to work perfectly. While it was certainly not lacking in flavor after a few spoonfuls, you begin to realize it is too much for one person. My suggestion to you is to ask them for a second spoon and share it with your bro or bestie. My four star review merely reflects its idea and vision more so than its execution. Chamoy City Limits represents an idea for me and all ideas can be either expanded on or reconfigured. It will be interesting to see where it will be taken to next Spring or Summer. Perhaps they could introduce flavors that represent those seasons or even showcase our local flavors. In addition it would be helpful if they placed one or two make shift tables or chairs while people wait for their orders. Chamoy City Limits is a cool spot to get a tasty refuge from the Texas burning heat. The sno-cones are as big as the boots by North Star Mall! The service is good. The price is right. Ok let me start by saying my raspa tasted amazing, but it was pretty much like any other great chango/Piccadilly out there. The only thing that was disappointing was that there was only one cup size and it was like XXL (32.oz) . I mean pricing is great for the size but I have no idea how any one person could finish that. She said it wasn't that big (LOL) so I said okay, but girl when I saw it I was like OMG idk who she was trying to fool lol. This place would be 5 stars if they offered different cup sizes. Based on what I had read on Yelp, I was eagerly looking forward to visiting Institute of Chili at Meat Week (Jan. 26, 2014). What transpired today left me totally bewildered and shocked that such a well-regarded food truck could operate in such a fashion... The event kicked off at noon. The Institute of Chili must have not set their alarm clocks as they took their first order at around 12:45PM. I was the third to order and I went with The Bomb (as seen on TV sold me - Texas on a bun...). The Bomb is a brisket sandwich topped with their "famous" chili, a fried egg, and cheese. However, I was informed that they didn't have any eggs. "But if you would like to wait, my partner is going to run to HEB and pick some up," she stated. "No, thanks. I'll take it without the egg." Thirty minutes later, the other lady returned with the eggs. Oh, did I mention that I still had not received my order? Nor had the first person, George, received his order. Can you say slow? Another 15 minutes went by and the George was finally getting bits and pieces of his order. So, all told, not only did they open 45 minutes late but they took about 45-50 minutes to get me my order! Well, at least I was eating at one of the best food trucks in the city and the truck with the best chili in the country, or so I had read, or heard, or something. The Bomb turned out to be a bust. The one saving grace of this monstrosity was the very tender brisket. The chili, oh come on, it was mealy from the ton of chili powder they used. I ate at least 3 better varieties of chili two weeks prior at the very same site during the chili cook-off. I managed to eat about 1/2 of this $9 (it's 8 but I gave a dollar tip not knowing it would take nearly an hour to get my food) sandwich. I will admit, others seem to love the food here so my opinion is the out of whack opinion. I get that. Like most things in life, what we find delicious is very subjective. This wasn't. The chili, again, wasn't. The fact that they opened 45 minutes late, were unprepared with one of their staple item, eggs, and then took over 45 minutes before they started getting food out the window, is not very professional. So I stopped in the location because I really wanted to try the Keto Piccadilly! This was our first time at the actual location, we have been to the truck a few times. The location is interesting, it's coming together! The young lady that helped us was very nice and was able to answer all the questions we had about the items they have. Truth: I hugged the owner when she described her idea of brunch :) These ladies are cooking up some good, ol' fashion, no bean havin', greasy, spicey, make you wanna slap your momma its so good, chili. I had the Roosevelt, and man oh man was it delicious! Tamales, fritos, chili, and an over easy egg on top with cilantro. Since I'm a perfect bite kind of girl i mashed it all up together and it was so yummy. The chili is just ground meat with no beans (cause this is texas, ya'll) and the real spice was on the back end, so you may take your first bite and think "oh this ain't so bad" and then it'll hit you, and it'll keep on hitting you with every bite you take. I talked to the owner after dinner and she gave me the history of the name of the truck. Apparently, these ladies are not the first chili queens, back in the early part of the 1900's there were chili queens out on the streets serving the local workers and then health codes were invented and they had to shut down, so now they're back in their new food truck for the first time since the 40's. so yay! for incorporating local history into your new local business. Bigger is not always better and just because a local news channel crowns them for having the best shaved ice in S.A. does not necessarily mean they really are the best. For one their service has been inconsistent. On my first visit to CCL they were posted up on Broadway underneath the 281/35 overpass. A huge line was forming. By the time I got to the front of the line I'd placed my order for a mangonada, which came out to $5. I didn't have a $5 bill on me. All I had were a few singles and a $20. One of the two women gave me an attitude and asked if I had anything smaller than a $20 but I told her that's all I had. She then gave me a number and kept me waiting to give me my correct change. As if that wasn't bad enough the two people behind me in line got their orders before I did. While I was waiting I noticed one of the women handling one of the blocks of ice without gloves. That's freaking disgusting! I don't know where her hands have been and I really don't wanna know either. I finally got my mangonada. It was good but a bit too small for what I paid $5 for. On my second visit , CCL was posted up on N. Flores across from where Green vegetarian restaurant used to be and I had wanted to get their much hyped Pink Leche but alas they were out so I ordered a piccadilly instead. And yes I paid with a $20. Fortunately there were different people working, the guy didn't give me an attitude and gave me my correct change. I finally got my piccadilly. It was huge and took me a while to finish. The top consisted of Kool Aid mix and the rest was pickle juice. The pickles slices were too big though. On my 3rd (and I'm gonna have to say final) visit they were posted up in Lions Field. There was nobody in line and I ordered the Pink Leche. I paid with a $20 bill since I didn't have a $5 on me and unfortunately the woman gave me a hard time and asked if I had anything smaller. I told her that's all I had hoping she'd get it. She did however kept me waiting for a while to get my change. I waited in the heat for my shaved ice. By the time I got it and took a bite I was disappointed immediately. No strawberry flavor, matter of fact it had little flavor and little syrup and consisted mainly of ice. Overhyped and highly overrated Pink Leche. CCL needs to just get out of the snowcone/raspa business and bring back the Institute of Chili since there are just too many competitors in the game like Snowcone Addiction, Big Daddy's, Gorilla's, Drake's,etc. Lousy raspas for sky high prices of $5 each is bad enough but lousy service and attitude on top of that is just too much for me to handle. When I check my bank statements the next day I noticed I was over charged for my order. Thinking it would be a simple fix I contacted the customer service email. Upon contacting the email on their site I was told that I ordered a deluxe snow cone(even though I did not). I had the photo that showed the one snow cone that I ordered and sent it to the email explaining that I had ordered a snowcone with two flavors (pineapple and tiger blood). I went to Alamo Eat Street Bar for the first time last night. It was First Friday down in South Town so the area was more than bustling. Saying it was busy would be an understatement, it was overly crowded. With that said, we decided to grab a bite to eat from the Institute of Chili. I have to admit, I was somewhat disappointed.
