I've read & heard good things about this place from very reliable elite Yelp friends so we were in the neighborhood and had to check it out. It's one of those rare mergings where chicken joint meets bar and at first I thought it was like a cool neighborhood blues bar but then there came the chicken. It's in a strip mall next to a Little Caesar's and you have to really look for it but once you find it there's plenty of parking then once inside the windows are nicely tinted and the lights are kinda low with blues playing throughout, nice. We were greeted at the door and seated immediately with menus. There's some apps and salads but other than a catfish plate lt's all about the chicken. When our drinks after (there's a full bar here) our delightful server took our appetizer order. (cheese, pickles, pepper and sausage platter) She returned shortly to take our order and my honey went with the chicken tenders with fries, #1 sin went with friend half chicken with beans and mashed potatoes, I went with the 3 piece fried chicken, beans, slaw and white bread. The cheese platter was a generous portion of cheddar cheese chunks, sliced and cooked sausages, banana peppers and chunks of tasty fill pickles, it was enough for the 3 of us. I am accustomed to some terrific cheese plates at a number of Memphis bbq joints that typically have big juicy sausages and are covered with their, unique to restaurant, bbq seasonings and are more to my taste but the one here at Champy's is a different take that is pretty good and I do like the banana peppers and I would recommend asking for extra some of their bbq seasonings to sprinkle on. Every chicken dish is made-to-order so be ready to wait 10-15 minutes but it is very much worth the wait. The chicken came out steaming hot and the result was some crispy and fresh perfectly cooked fried chicken, nice! Let's talk chicken, these guys do it right and it's indeed better than Mama made and had Paula Deen beat by a long shot. This freshly prepared bird is gently breaded and is nicely spiced, breaded and, very important, is fried to absolute perfection! It comes out very hot, it's crazy juicy and moist throughout is a really delicious chicken experience. While Gus's chicken is a much spicier chicken Champy's has a much fresher, larger and juicier bird. I really like their beans and their cole slaw is a light mayonaise and more sweet vinegar chunky delicious treat. I have to comment on the decor, there's license plates and dollar bills around the bar, not unusual for the area, but the rest of the place is very Memphisesque with tributes to W.C. Handy, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf and a general blues music vibe. I dig it!! I suspect a Memphis influence here with the cheese plate and delta hot tamales offerings, and that white bread is a hint, I'll try to confirm what that's all about on my next visit. Plus they have a nice spacious outdoor seating area that I'm looking forward to checking out when the heat index isn't in the triple digits like today. Bottom line: Friendly folks with a big full bar and good selection of beers and while I'm not going to declare that this is the very best chicken anywhere but as someone who loves fried chicken and has had it everywhere I've traveled, it's absolutely now one of my favorites and have not had any in the area that even comes close. My husband went there to grab some wings for an appetizer, I was cooking dinner, they were pretty good but not like I remember. Also they didn't go up in price but they went down in the number of wings for same price. My husband liked them but for me they lacked flavor. It was like they just poured hot sauce over unseasoned wings, but remember I am picky. Also they were overcooked. I have been to Champy's many times before. They have great fried chicken and great tamales. My wife got the chicken tenders and loved her meal. My daughter got the fried chicken salad and really enjoyed it. So.... I decide to go in a different direction and ordered the smoked sausage, cheese and pickle appetizer as my meal. First of all, this is a legendary appetizer in Memphis at places like Rendezvous's BBQ... this isn't a Bbq place. There is a lot of food in this appetizer, but the sausage was cooked to death, and that along with the tanginess of the cheese and the sourness of the pickles and pickled peppers is just not a great combo. Don't hesitate to come here, they are famous for fried chicken and tamales. Stick to those. Pretty good hole in the wall spot for fried chicken. Went at 6:45 on a Tuesday and every table in the house was full, inflicting the bar. For an app we got the sausage, pickles, cheese -American and pepper jack- and banana pepper concoction. Really simple, something you could easily throw together at home (and I intend on trying it in the future) but good! Would certainly order again, the flavors really work. We also got tender baskets with the Champy's sauce and a three piece white with potato salad and cole baked beans. Chicken is good but I don't think I agree with the other reviewer who claimed it was better than wille maes in New Orleans. It's good for daphne though. Tenders are BIG, juicy and seasoned well. Actually tastes better than the majority of home cooked fried chicken & the sides are perfect..At first, I couldn't figure out why there was a slice of plain white "loaf" bread (think Sunbeam or Wonder white bread) under the chicken pieces..it is to keep the outside of the crispy fried chicken pieces from getting soggy from the the "grease" that each piece of flour battered chicken is deep fried in. Our server lost track of our order, then told us that chicken wings take longer than breasts after we waited for 30 minutes. We Counted 6 tables served before us which were seated after us.
