I was looking for a well rated restaurant near our hotel in Mobile that we haven't been to before. Dumbwaiter looked like it had great food choices but not so fancy as "fine dining." I'm a sucker for a roasted Brussels sprouts appetizer (which we ordered). The chunks of bacon in it were delightful. My dish was light with 3 perfectly seared scallops and a spinach salad with fruit and a vinaigrette dressing. My husband had a 14 0z. ribeye with roasted asparagus and subbed the potatoes for vegetables. It was all very good. The decor is very hip - a wood meets metal type interior design. Only downside - 1. Had it not been for the fruit, I wouldn't have been able to finish them (& there were only three). My husband had the 'hook of the day' & he said it was pretty decent. Fish & sauce were decent, but grits were too heavy & green beans overdone. The ice cream that came with our bread pudding had freezer burn. I know some might say we're being quite picky, but considering the industries both of us work in, we have high standards for food, be it fast food or fine dining. It was New Years eve, we had reservations for 630 and we were seated when we arrived, the host and hostess were very friendly. Our waitress was over in about 5 minutes. We ordered wine and the fried green tomatoes appetizer they were not very hot when they came out but had the flavors and texture. We both ordered the pot roast on a plate with mash potatoes and carrots. Again, all the flavors were there but the pot roast seemed to need more time cooking. The last time I ate it with a fork, this time I needed a knife, it was tasty nonetheless. Last we shared a cheesecake and it was awesome. Our waitress did a good job during our visit. We visited Dumbwaiter while we were in Mobile for Mardi Gras. My son and his wife had been there before and suggested it. It is a smaller place, but the food was really good. I started the night with a virgin monitor. I appreciated that they had a mocktail option. For my entree, I chose the Tensaw Tournedos which is twin 4oz filet medallions, grilled shrimp, goat cheese scallion mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, with bourbon peppercorn sauce 45. These were super decadent with cheese, but I really enjoyed them (probably because we had the salad as well). The brussel sprouts ($13) were pretty good with a vinegarette sauce, but I remember them being a bit oily. Been there many times and usually had a good experience, but this time was an epic fail.. Ordered at the bar the catch of the day and the fish tasted rotten. I ate the sides but could not choke down the horrible fish. I told the bar tender and he looked at me like i was in it for a free meal.. I didn't ask for it to be removed from the bill, and he never offered to do so. I paid full price for a disgusting meal and now will never go back.. I have referred many people there in the past, and even earlier today, but will never do so again. Terrible meal and no offer to make it right. Several locals recommended this restaurant when asked where can we get some really good food in downtown Mobile, so of course had to try it. I see why, the menu is vast with so many southern options which make you feel immersed in the South. It's a bustling place with many couples out for date night, girls night and even a few families. The place was quaint and warmly lit and the table arrangement was well spaced etc. However, the room temperature was cool to cold. I had to put on a fleece pullover. The rest of the party was also heavily attired. I ordered the MEAT AND POTATOES, a wagyu flat iron steak, potato hash, sautéed bell peppers and onions topped with housemade woosh Food arrived warm. The potatoes were stale as if they had been cooked hours before and allowed to get cold and then reheated. Which gave them a grainy textuce. The steak was cooked the way I like it, raw. So it was easy to tell it was not wagyu beef. The flat iron steak was pre-sliced. The whole meal was extremely salty because of the homemade whoosh(Worcester sauce) that covered everything And there was no vegetable served with it. Due to the room and serving temperature my food was cold before I was done. Waitress was prompt and attentive. There was a $3.95 upcharge for credit and debit payments. This is a lovely restaurant with a great vibe. It nestled in the heart of downtown Mobile. My family went here for my mom's birthday and the food did not disappoint. I decided to add chicken, but it really didn't need any extra meat. The pasta was a nice helping. It was very creamy. It could've been a little bit warmer, but other than that, it was delicious. Went to the Dumbwaiter with friends for the first time ahead of a show at the Seanger Theater & we were not disappointed! We split a number of appetizers our favorite of which was the Brussel sprouts- holy cow were they delish & it was a HUGE portion size! Would definitely order them again. The Caesar salad was also delish & the pork rinds were good but we wouldn't order them again as the pimento cheese was served warm which wasn't very appealing to us. (There is an actual [now non-operable] dumbwaiter in the back). The food was over the top excellent for me. We had reservations here on a Wednesday night for a Party of 10. The table shared some appetizers including the New South Brussel Sprouts and the Fried Pimento. The brussels were simply excellent and featured some onions and a crazy delicious honey balsalmic with bacon. The fried pimento had apple bacon jam and candied onions. I also had a beverage and that was the Blood Orange Paloma! For my entree -- well that was the star of the meal, which pushed my rating of this place to like an 11 out of 10. I had the Hook to Table. The featured fish changes on this dish; however, today it was a Sheephead. Honestly, I have never even heard of Sheephead fish before; however, it was excellent. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly with some delicious shrimp creme sauce on top. The dish also came with some caramelized green beans and ground cheddar grits. For dessert, I had the bread pudding. This is the only thing that I didn't feel stood out for me personally. I am NOT saying it was bad. I am just saying in comparision to the rest of the meal which was perfection, I felt this was more of a 7 out of 10. No big deal. We enjoyed a wonderful meal that included a daily fish special, which was one of the best preparations of Mahi Mahi that I've ever tasted. The chocolate peanut butter pie was out of this world. A nice little spot in downtown Mobile that I would, without a doubt, visit again. The decor was simple but beautifully done. The service was top notch from the host to the waitress we had. Prices were beyond fair considering the portion sizes and the quality of food. The meal itself was probably better than all of that though. We started off with the fried green tomato app - it comes with 3 decent sized tomatoes but also in between each tomato was creamy piece of fried cheese - perfect mix with the tomatoes. The crab sauce on top wasn't overly crabby but added that little bit of brightness and a sweetness to the dish. I had the fried pork chop and thinking the dish wouldn't have enough food with the single cut (for a big guy like me ), I got the double cut and I was wrong - very wrong - the double cut was literally 2 huge pork chops (and 1 would've easily been enough). The collards and goat cheese mashed potatoes were great sides to the perfectly fried and full of flavor pork chops. Great place - we will definitely be back at some point and I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a very upgraded southern meal. read more

There were only three small scallops on her plate. Her cauliflower florets were good. This whole plate looked like an appetizer. Our disappointment was the size of her meal. She doesn't eat much, and we were not expecting a full plate at a fine restaurant, however, for the price, it was very underwhelming.
