It's been "over 12 years" since I wrote my initial review for Kissui Sushi. There been a lot of changes over that time in the world, but the one thing which has remained consistent is the quality of the food you get Kissui. I stand by every word in my old review - with the sole exception that they no longer carry Natto which is a shame. So please do not hesitate to come to Kissui Sushi to satisfy your sushi needs. Grabbed a Spicy Tuna roll for lunch and was pretty disappointed with the texture and flavor. Service was pretty quick, but that doesn't make up for my wasted money. I've never had a tuna roll that squishes between my chopsticks, but the fish was so slimy and mushy that it would squeeze out when I picked up each piece. The spicy mayo I got on the side was also very liquidy. It sloshed around in its container, absolutely not the consistency that mayo should have. read more

It's a shame that I write this review as I am waiting for a take out order that has taken 55 minutes from the time I called and still isn't ready. Added frustration since they said 35 minutes for pick up. I would have left except they took my credit card for payment and tell me 5 minutes in the restaurant. There food isn't bad but these excessive waits and mis-quotes on timing have forced me to not order from here again. I like to support local but I don't need to have the frustration. I left livid. Our first time ordering delivery (Doordash) from here. I must say we're very happy with our meal. There was something for everyone in this family of picky eaters. I found the sushi very fresh and delicious (loved the 4 season roll but found the salmon tartar lacking. I wish it came with avocado). My 14 year old son got the beef teriyaki bento box and he was full. Which is a lot to say for someone who doesn't stop eating. My younger kids were also very happy with their udon soups. I would give 0 stars for the service but the food was decent. This is a take out place not a dine in on a Friday night as my fiancé & I mistakenly did. We called and asked for a reservation for 2 people and the first person I spoke to was so confused I had to speak a different person, as the first one had no Idea what I meant (should have seen that as a sign). What a joke LOL then we sat down and it took 10 minutes for a waitress (was only one) to take our drink order. Everything was in slow motion and the food took forever to come out. Really good I've had a variety of things there and I've been pleased we like it for sit down it's quiet and fun.

I actually feel bad writing this...i am trying to support local businesses especially restaurants who have weathered the Covid pandemic, but just finished eating a roll that I ended up waiting 20 minutes beyond the 35 minute time I was told when I ordered it. Sadly this is probably the 5th time this has happened the last 5 times I've ordered. I never have a complicated order...its always 1 roll. I live down the street so it's convenient. The sushi is good but I just cannot take horrible service. Just terrible and unfriendly. I'd rather drive out of the way to have even fair service. read more

Love the food! Hate the wait!!! They tell you that your order will be read in 25 to 35 minutes, but once you get there the wait always changes to double the original time. I once waited an hour, and it didn't help that every time I walked in to see why it's taking so long they tell me just 5 to 10 minutes longer. Food is not worth the wait. They underestimate their food pick up times by 45 minutes to an hour. This is the second time this happened to me. This is disrespectful of their customers time. I really want to love this place. I really do. I've been a resident of Little Silver for 10 years and I've never been too keen on Kissui. Their ownership has changed a couple of times, things have been up and down, but I'll speak strictly on my most recent experience there. I walked in around 6 on a Thursday evening. I actually expected the place to be empty, but there were actually two families seated at tables. The hostess was no where to be found for a minute or two, given that she was waiting and serving simultaneously. I was riding solo for the night, so I helped myself to the sushi bar. The decor is terrible. There's nothing wrong with having a "tradition" (if you could call it that in the US) sushi dig, but when it's poorly decorated and furnished, it does not send good vibes. The chairs are old and nicked up, revealing bare wood. Kitchen supplies are stored outside on shelves that would be better adorned with lamps or candles. The lighting creates no ambiance what-so-ever. I could go on. This still irks me, but if you're seated at a sushi bar, your correspondence should be with the sushi chefs. Even if its as miniscule as checking off your order on a sheet and handing it to them, there should be some connection. I digress. I placed my order as soon as I figured out what I wanted. There was no fried rice on the menu, but they were happy to whip up a dish despite being absent from the offerings. It was brought out pretty quick. However, it rivals for among the worst fried rice I've ever had. I'm a college student, so I can tolerate dining hall food, but this was pretty bad. The rice was soggy and tasteless. Greasy would be an understatement. I put it down regardless, trying not to focus on how it sat in my stomach. For my main course, I ordered a Phoenix roll and sweet potato roll. I was fairly pleased with both. The waitress/hostess/server took my request to make it spicy (albeit $0.50 extra per roll). Presentation was underwhelming, especially when the chef, Oscar, haphazardly throws roe on top of the roll on top of the fish display rather than the preparation counter. The fish was fresh and the sweet potato fried to perfection. Props for that. The abundance of avocado on the Phoenix made the roll a tad on the mushy side, but it still retained a nice taste. However, for prices similar to "Kanji" in Shrewsbury, I expected more. I want to give this three stars, but given the quality of sushi at other restaurants in adjacent towns, I have to leave it at two. I wish Kissui the best, because I would love nothing more to go into town more often for my fix of Japanese. They really need a facelift, new management, and something to compete with the forerunners. read more

Their food is good, but they are ALWAYS 1 hour behind their estimated time. If they tell you your order will be ready at 7pm, don't bother trying to pick it up until 8pm. Very frustrating. More honest estimates would resolve this issue. They don't seem to care when this is mentioned to them. read more

Looking for a local dinner place we stumbled across Kissui. Seems to be a family owned and ran place. There were two larger parties finishing up when we walked in. While service was a bit slow the rolls were delicious. They should probably hire some extra help to handle their takeout customers-had about 6 or 7 come in during the hour we were eating. read more

For a Friday night, it was very quiet, but my boyfriend and I were really excited for this little find. After a 90 minute wait, we finally got our food. There was maybe two other tables, and two more that came in after us, and were served immediately, as we waited for just three rolls. I went there one evening over the weekend and they only had 3 people working, 2 sushi chefs and one VERY slow waitress. Even though the place was pretty empty (now I understand why) we waited over 10 minutes to get our drink order in, another 10-15 to receive the drinks and our uncomplicated order took over an hour to be served. The table that sat next to us had an even worse experience as they were there for 20 minutes before the waitress even took their order. The food itself was average at best so I came to the following conclusions: 1) This place has declined significantly since the last review. The atmosphere is lacking with the bathrooms being a little old fashioned, and poor lighting but the food is a little different. This may be the best sushi in the area for a good price. The salmon combo roll was my favorite and the salmon sushi was so fresh. They gave you a lot of fish on the roll and sushi unlike other places who overprice their sushi, and don't give a significant amount. Kissui is a bit more traditional than the current spate of trendy Japanese places that focus on over-priced special rolls named for action movies heroes etc. Kissui does a superb job with standard dishes and has fresh, inventive specials nightly. Their chicken teriyaki has become my go-to, especially the lunch box which comes with chicken teriyaki, California rolls, 2 gyoza, white rice, and miso soup.
