Today my husband took me to this restaurant because it has always been one of my favorite places to go. I have been coming here for a long time and have always had good experiences. Unfortunately, today was completely different -- and extremely disappointing. I ordered a ribeye, and as soon as the food arrived, I noticed it was not good. It was cold, tasteless, and completely different from the standard I was used to. I immediately called the waitress and explained the situation. She was polite and asked if I would like it reheated, but I said no, because the issue was not only the temperature -- the food simply was not flavorful. The vegetables were soaked in water, everything was cold, and the overall taste was terrible. My husband was very hungry and even tried to eat it, but I told him it was impossible. The manager came over, apologized, and confirmed that the food was prepared in the kitchen. After that, we were offered ice cream as a courtesy, but nothing was done about the main dish, which was clearly not acceptable. We ended up paying the full bill -- around $80 -- for a meal that was horrible. I left the restaurant hungry, upset, and extremely disappointed. We had to leave our daughter with someone else for what was supposed to be a special dinner for us, and it turned into a very frustrating experience. The sushi here is addictive. The staff are so friendly and the service is quick for takeout. We frequent here often and the dining area is BYOB if you choose to dine in. Their hibachi section is also phenomenal. Really great for date night, families or birthday parties/special occasions. They take reservations. I came here on a Tuesday night to catch with a friend over dinner at around 6:00. There were only a few other parties. You can choose between hibachi and a normal table. We decided just on a table and our waitress took our drinks and order right away. We went all out and got the love boat plus the lobster rock and roll. The lobster sushi I couldn't really taste the lobster inside but they do give you a whole tail of meat separately. The fish sashimi on the boat tasted very fresh and was super tender, did not taste fishy at all. The octopus and clam sashimi was crunchy and had a nice bounce. But, this was a BYO place which meant no fancy fun drinks - and be warned - the liquor store that others review as being next door is CLOSED. But I did want to say that I had one of the BEST sushi rolls I've ever had at Kanji, so make sure to add it to your order. The menu is Asian fusion/sushi so there is pretty much something everyone will enjoy here. Came by for lunch with my husband. Food for Hibachi was great. I have dairy intolerance so they made a special dish in the kitchen for me. I had shrimp and they were big and cooked perfectly. I ordered from the lunch menu special. 3 rolls with a soup and salad. Pretty run of the mill choice. Only what came wasn't. The soup that came with the meal wasn't your usual miso soup. This was a darker, richer broth with what seemed to be some fried onions.. mushroom soup, maybe? Anyways, it was delicious and warming to my soul on a particularly raw February rainy day. I'm very disappointed in our choice for dinner here. We waited 20 minutes for someone to even greet our table. It took one hour to get our food after ordering. We had to get the manager to even ask about our food because it seemed like our server forgot about us. We had empty waters for the majority of dinner. My friends eel roll was so fishy that she couldn't eat it. She said it was the worst she's had. Then we ordered mochi for dessert and it was so stale and inedible that we had to return it. They then tried to charge us for the desserts and we had to speak up before they removed 2 of the 3 desserts that we didn't eat. I'm right in the middle of the road as far as this place is concerned and am not planning on returning anytime soon. We had a get together with family and I believe my uncle chose this place and personally I would have rather of gone back to Applebee's, where last night I had dinner with my friend and his family! I've been on a pretty strict diet so I tried to order light and I had the basil saute' with chicken. It was really mediocre at best. Some of the chicken was either too tough or too mushy. It seems that sushi and the hibachi grill is the best way to experience this restaurant, but a kitchen dish is considered obligatory. I'm just happy the prices were actually not bad at all for what you get, but the soup and salad included with the meal were terrible! The service was not very good. Yes, the meal and grilled food is prepared and brought out very fast, but they will also take it away from you as fast as they bring it. They want you in and out of there as fast as possible and please note that for a Saturday at around 8 o'clock it was not busy at all. One of the male workers who was busing the table actually seemed like a bully and was very surly. He kept on asking my mom about the sake she brought in(BYOB) and he must have asked her at least five times if she wanted it hot and she finally had to tell him that she was fine and to just leave her alone. I don't know if he just didn't understand or was just being a jerk, but I almost had to step in and just tell him to go away. It's a nice place, clean and reasonably priced and I would never tell anyone not to try this place, but I have no interest in coming back. I would much prefer my favorite bar and grills. TLDR: good, will be back for sure but not blown away. Started with shrimp tempura sushi roll and that was my favorite part of the meal. The shrimp didn't have any sort of "seafood" taste, it was crispy and light and didn't have any fillers in the roll (shrimp, seaweed, rice). Probably the best shrimp tempura I have ever had. For my meal I had hibachi steak. Was fine. Nothing great. Noodles were oily, rice didn't have a ton of flavor, steak and shrimp were just okay. Wait staff was average. used to like this place but just had horrible food, horrible service and all around bad experience. I made a reservation to take my daughter and her friends for hibachi for her birthday. it was a hour and a half for the chef to get to the table. the kids were starving and tired. within 1 minute of getting their food, they brought us take out boxes and started cleaning the table. the kids hardly ate anything and we all left hungry. it was not an enjoyable experience at all. they sat a group that arrived after us and they were done eating and leaving when the chef arrived at our table. when I asked when we would be served and pointed it out, the "manager" brought me the reservation sheet and said their reservation was 15 minutes prior to mine. She didn't seem to notice or care that the timing didn't make sense either. They just kpet saying "yes, coming very soon" and not be honest that they were running 1 - 1 1/2 hours behind schedule. group next to us said that is common here and you have to make the first reservation of the night or they always get behind and it's hours. So it sounds like they don't know how to run restaurant reservations to me....and they aren't honest with customers about it either.... Found out they told two of the 11 year old children they couldn't order both sushi and hibachi. It was so loud I couldn't here what the waitress told them.....she never asked me about it, the paying adult. Never would I take guests to a restaurant and not let them order food. they got sushi about 45minutes before the chef came Then sat there still hungry when he came. they took away their plates and wouldn't let them share so we had tons of food thrown away too. Why would the waitress tell them that? why wouldn't she ask me how to handle something as I was the only adult? So what if some surcharge for them to eat noodles? i would also add the food was bland and super gelatinous and greasy. Even though I was starving, I didn't even want to eat most of it! The girls were tired and starving but trying to have fun since it was my daughters birthday. they looked miserable most of the time sitting and waiting though. so regret this! and my daughter was so disappointed. Came here after a day at the the minature golf arcade center nearby and was in the mood for sushi, my trusty yelp app led me the way to this nicely decorated restaurant that features sushi and hibachi style cusine. I got seated right away for a party of two and if there was a way to change the dollar signs on this restaurant i would.. its actually $$$ instead of $$... baked oysters(they should change the name its actually fried)... six oysters perfectly fried in a light cripsy batter served with mustard sauce, i thought it was one of the better "cooked" oysters that ive had. I actually prefer my oysters raw... it wasnt bad but i probably wouldn't order it again cause like i said i prefer raw oyster baked scallop- this was delicious! a mix of mayo, masago, and various sashimi all cooked on to one beautifully presented scallop shell. i would highly recommend this, another cold appetizer(forgot the name) it was the last one on the cold appetier list which consist of sashimi mixed in a light mayo sauce served in a ring of avocado, this was okay, i've had better and if you were to order you might as well go with the baked scallop it has everything except for the avocado and there is more flavor in the scallop my friend ordered a sashimi platter and i thought it was mediocre, the sushi was good but nothing amazing(then again i am used to authentic omakase type of sushi) I ordered a spider roll and thought it was decent but nothing to write home about the servers were friendly and one waiter realized i spoke cantonese and even came to have a quick chat with us helped us packed our foods to go really wonderfully and we found out he lived in brooklyn too. I enjoy restaurants where waiters are personable because it makes all the difference in the meal. This place is a bit on the expensive side and is really more of a 3.5 star in my opinion but with the friendly service i decided to round up and be generous. it was a good meal, the food was good, the decor was nice, the servers were friendly i would recommend this place read more

We came in and sat at the bar tonight. Let me rave about the ambiance. Very clean lines and modern. Presentation of food is truly an art for them. Service is very attentive. Our wonderful waitress was constantly refilling our tea cups away from us so it doesn't spill on us. Then the chefs also had timed all the dishes perfectly so that we'd finish one appetizer before the next one came out. The quality of their food is absolutely top notch. The sashimi wasn't at room temperature and it was so fresh and buttery. My favorite is the oyster shooters. The sauce is delicate and the oysters are big and juicy. They missed on the dragon roll. Had dinner at Kanji before a show with my daughter the other night. Upon entering the restaurant I was taken by how warm & clean it looked. In fact, as we were sitting one of the ladies was wiping down the chairs at the empty tables. Our waitress came over immediately with menus & was quick coming back for our orders. The place was empty because it was early. After perusing the menu we decided to share 2 rolls; the spring breeze roll & the hope roll. Our food came out VERY quickly. The best of the 2 was the spring breeze roll, with tuna, pineapple, & avocado & a spicy brown mango sauce (not that spicy). It was delicious. I was not fond of the hope roll with it's avocado, greens, & pepper tuna, nor was my daughter. Our biggest complaint was sushi is supposed to come out in bite size pieces. These pieces were huge & of course did not come with a knife to cut them. The taste was just ok, nothing special. I have no complaints about the service as we were in & out in roughly 20 minutes. The warning: if you don't like avocado, your special sushi roll options are limited. we ended up here after a movie because it was close and the reviews were great. We ordered a few different options, and our food came out quickly, and the prices were about the same as many other places, but the portions were quite large, which was a plus! It's taken me a long time to realize that I'm just not a fan of Kanji's sushi - it's always a disappointment. Most of their "special rolls" consist of some sort of "spicy" fish or shrimp tempura, rather than a piece of fish within (or on top of) the special roll. Their rolls are also huge and difficult to eat. I will say that their Volcano roll that is super crispy with a kick is very good, but that's about it. Their hibachi is standard and good, but with sushi it's a pass, especially with a number of better sushi places around the area. read more

We came here with another couple and they had been here before. They said it's frequented by locals and not usually that slow. However, the food here was amazing and fresh! The only negative here was that it took us an hour before we actually got our food and it took about 20 minutes before somebody even showed up to provide us with water and even ask us anything. It is a BYOB. We brought our own and had a great time, but were very annoyed that it took very long to even get any attention.
