Wow. This place has it all Sister and I went on a Friday night- quick service, quick food, AND the ladies who served us were so sweet, attentive, and absolutely the best. The inside is so cute and the plates are so pretty too! Not only are the physical dishes cool, but the presentation of the sushi was too! I got 2 orders of the simple tuna, and one New York. My sister got an order of the California rolls and 2 shrimp tempura orders. Presentation was fantastic, and the sushi was divine. The salmon was so tender and almost buttery in consistency, and the veggies inside the rolls are so fresh and crisp. I always find sushi so refreshing and it hit the spot. I'd also like to mention how fantastic they are about dietary restrictions. Tons of vegan/vegetarian options PLUS GLUTEN FREE SOY SAUCE, APPS, AND A MENU. For the celiacs out there: I didn't get glutened! They took it seriously and I had no issues! If you're not sure where to go, go to Kanbu. The entire meal was around $65, and we had a lot of sushi plus a massive pot of tea. First, I appreciate that they stayed open a touch late for us - I misread the business hours and so we came in before they closed, but not by much. The place was very clean, and service was fast. A very small and hidden restaurant with very cheap options, you'd be looking at spending 16$ for a sushi burrito which is on the cheaper end. For the price it was great but the ingredients were not as fresh as I was expecting and the burrito comes with one free sauce which came in a small cup and was hard to eat with my burrito. My niece is a sushi connoisseur and I continue to learn from her- though I'm far less adventurous and can't bring myself to eat raw seafood. I realize many of you may think I'm missing out but I have my food idiosyncrasies, lol. Upon arriving, our server promptly greeted us for a drink order. I had a rather stressful trip with traffic and construction and really would have loved a glass of wine, but no alcoholic beverages are available here. That was okay because I calmed down over a cold glass of water while visiting with my niece. For appetizers we went with the seaweed salad (delicious!) and the Shrimp Shumai (shrimp dumplings)... oh so delicious as well! Perhaps since we were here for an early dinner, our orders came out quickly. My niece ordered a huge variety plate of sushi that looked fabulously artistic. I tried the sweet potato roll and it was delectable. I ultimately went with a Chicken Katsu Burrito that included deep fried Chicken dipped in panko rolled up in a burrito that was also stuffed with cabbage) I used the dipping sauce that came with the Shrimp Shumai appetizer since it was lighter than the thicker Katsu sauce. Our server was kind enough to bring both sauces for comparison. I must say that the burrito was sliced in half but I still managed to make a mess trying to eat it because it was overflowing with chicken and cabbage. Was very delicious; I try to stay away from fried food, but this was so worth the splurge! Could only eat half of the burrito and gave the other half to my niece to take home along with her leftover sushi. The portions are very generous! The menu had so many options and next time I will try to be a bit more adventurous with the sushi rolls. Had my eye on the Ebi Shrimp and Asparagus with Avocado. Yes, there will definitely be a next time and I highly recommend this restaurant for sushi lovers as well as for those in the sushi exploration phase. Stopped here to get a quick bite on our way to check out the U or M campus and I'm glad we did. They have a pretty massive menu and something for everyone. We were traveling with kids and I was happy to see they had lunch specials and kids menu as well. Udon and veggie tempura from the kids menu was perfect for my 6 yr old and she loved it. Got katsu bento which came with so much little side items it was enough to feed two adults. We also got sushi burritos which was massive and jam packed with fish and fresh veggies and super yummy. The only things we would Pass next time were spicy tuna and salmon rolls. I think the sushi rice was not seasoned well it lacked flavor. Y'all know that when it comes to sushi, my heart is loyal to Godaiko. I met a group of friends here and took a risk. This used to be the old Nagomi sushi. I like this place better. It's located next to the infamous Afternoon Delight. The dining area is rather small, but they have a beautiful, wood filled modern aesthetic. They were able to accommodate our party of 7 and were very prompt and friendly. Although many of the rolls looked unique and intriguing for sure, I went with the bulgogi. It was fabulous. It was accompanied by warm rice and a ginger salad. I washed it down with a taro boba. The boba was tasty, but they need a larger circumference straw to enable you to suck the boba out. All of the options that my friends got looked great, too. I may return to risk one of their warm cheese topped rolls or a burrito. read more

Dedicating my 200th review to this lovely spot that I visited during my short trip to Ann Arbor (from NYC) last week! Naturally, during my travels I was craving my Asian food. My boyfriend and I were so intrigued by the sushi burrito photos that we stumbled upon, and decided to eat here before our flight back home. We ordered the Kanbu Burrito ($14) and Dragon Burrito ($13) with spicy ponzu on the side and they were both BOMB. Sooo delicious and fresh. It did get a bit messy but so worth it. It doesn't end there. We also ordered the Seafood Udon ($17.50) and Tuna Lover Poke Bowl ($12). Yes there were only 2 of us. The udon was wonderfully soft and chewy, broth perfectly flavored. The comfort bowl that we needed and craved after eating garbage for the last 3 days. And the poke didn't disappoint. This was the only thing we couldn't finish and had to pack, which we ate at the airport hours later and still tasted so good. I'd recommend all of these items that we had. To top it off, our server was so friendly. She was warm & welcoming and wished us a safe trip home. Kanbu is a lowkey, unassuming casual Japanese restaurant and I never expected to have such good food out here. If we were UMich students we'd come back all the time! read more

Wanted to try something new for dinner last night and Kanbu it was! And it was perfect! I got the Kanbu sushi burrito and my husband did the tofu bibimbap and both were excellent. I've been to some places where the sushi burritos are small and some places where they're huge, and since I wasn't sure where theirs would fall I also got an order of the pork katsu just in case it was on the smaller side (I figured at the very least I'd have left over lunch the next day). Luckily it was on the larger side and I was able to save the rest for lunch (which reheated well and tasted great!). The burrito was delicious. The fresh, buttery fish is definitely the star of the show. Each item also came with a side of miso soup or salad which was nice. Sometimes you only get that with a larger entree but I noticed even some of the sushi rolls had that as an option. FYI if you order through their website (which I did) they give you about a 15 minute range for pick up. I live nearby so I wasn't sure when I should head over, so I just gave them a call to see if it was ready and they politely informed me it was waiting for me. Easy enough! When I stopped in everyone was SO nice and my order was waiting for me on the table. A quick in and out. Can't wait to try even more. Some of the rolls looked amazing! read more

Friendly and helpful staff, good food presentation, and an overall solid sushi place in A2. I had the opportunity to try their spicy tuna roll, new york roll, scotland roll, and yellowtail and uni nigiri. I thoroughly enjoyed them all and was surprised by how fresh the uni was. The spicy tuna roll was a bit too spicy, but I do admit to having a rather weak spice tolerance. I only had a few mild "complaints". The prices are on the steeper side (though not too unreasonably so) and I was mildly bothered by the fact that they never brought me my salad and overcharged me for the nigiri. I was getting reasonably full so the salad wasn't a huge deal; they also promptly fixed the bill, so all was well. As for covid measures, there was social distancing between tables, but physical menus were still being used. What a great surprise. Walked in for lunch and was surprised by the generous portion. Bigger is not better, but I appreciate the large cuts of fish in my rolls. Went here for lunch on a Tuesday. They offer a lunch combo from 11am to 3pm but I didn't make it in time. The Kanbu roll was delicious! They top it with gold flakes which is a nice touch. Can't really taste it. The LA roll was good as well. Both rolls had fried shrimp tempura in the middle so eating them both at once felt like too much fried sushi. The yellowtail nigiri is to die for. I LOVE yellowtail & they give a huge slice of fish in proportion to a small amount of rice. Definitely worth the money. The albacore nigiri tasted dry & not as good as the yellowtail. Wouldn't get it again but it wasn't absolutely terrible. The miso soup came out particularly quickly and wasn't as warm as I wished. It was packed with flavor though. Was visiting Ann Arbor and looking for a sushi place. This was one of the higher rated places so thought I would give it a shot. I ordered an assortment of the nigiri(Tuna, Hamachi, Albacore, Hotate, Cajun tuna) and a couple of rolls. The rolls were at least edible. But the Albacore was so dry it was basically jerky. The Hotate I just sent back as it was refrozen so long it had a white film. Fresh hotate doesn't look like that. They also serve lukewarm tap water so there's that. read more

I was looking for a quick lunch to grab on a Friday afternoon, and this place had a lot of good reviews. It wasn't busy when we got there! it was pretty quiet and we were seated right away. Sushi was reasonably priced and quality was good. I wasn't a huge fan of the fried gyoza because they were a tiny bit chewy, but I didn't mind it too much. The green tea and soup were perfect. Miso soup is good. Fireball sushi burrito 7/10 My friend ordered this and said it was good but not her favorite thing. She would have liked it better if the eel sauce was in the burrito. Came into what was Nagomi now Kanbu sushi. The menu for Kanbu looks very similar to momo sushi on Eisenhower, which is very good as well. The fireball burrito is an excellent value for what you get lots of tuna and avocado and not overloaded with sticky rice, has just the right amount. Would definitely make that burrito a habit for lunch. The rolls were very good as well, the fireball roll was good enjoyed the crunch with masago on top. My least favorite roll was the shrimp and scallop roll you do not taste any of the scallops in the roll, although for what you pay around $6.50 not a bad deal.
