I'm so picky about Chinese food! We recently moved here and it's always a struggle to fine new favorites. The pork fried rice is delicious! Great service! They use a light batter for items that are deep fried. I've tried the shrimp & sweet & sour chicken. The egg rolls are interesting-different! TLDR: Disrespectful meals for disrespectful prices Q: Why did the chicken cross the road? A: Because Chan's Restaurant didn't cook it So, I'm new here, just moved from South Korea two weeks ago, and I heard doordash was pretty awesome so I'm ordering things left and right. I can get down with American style of Chinese food, and there's great places here, but not as good as New York. Nonetheless... I get around to trying out Chan's Restaurant and order the chicken chow mein $9 and a $2 Pepsi for $16.30, including tip and taxes. That isn't a bad price to pay if you just want bare minimum decent noodles topp Hued with veggies, saucy broth, and fully cooked chicken, with a can of tasty chemicals to chase your vodka with. That's what I anticipated, but that's not what I got. They sent me a bag with a pouch of some dried noodles which were pretty good, and a deceptively full box that seemed like it had some bomb snackage, but instead was full of nearly raw onions steeping in chicken broth with 1/3 cup pink, undercooked unseasoned chicken scraps sprinkled sparingly throughout that thang. That was grimey and stingy, y'all basically scammed me out of 13.30 because the only thing worth paying for was the tip, the driver got me my shit early and was cool as hell. He reminded me of when you would listen to trap back in the day and the white dude in the intro would go "Damn son where'd you find this" So in other words I could have bought noodles for less than two dollars, chicken for four dollars, and chopped up an onion for less money. The only reason I didn't put one star was because the fortune cookie was wrapped in a paper bag, and the only plastic was the soy sauce, so points for reducing plastic waste. Also, I can use the raw onion chow mein, guest starring the raw chicken, to cook a chicken soup for tomorrow's dinner. That, and because I believe in second chances, so I'll swing by sometime to roast the rest of the dishes there. read more

I ordered takeout and did 2 dinners for my husband and I. The egg roll that came with my husbands order was very strange. It was a big fried blob. Not a traditional egg roll wrapped in an egg roll wrapper. My dinner came with fried shrimp and sweet and sour chicken. My husbands came with sweet and sour pork. All the meats looked and tasted the same. We also ordered an Asian chicken salad and did not get any dressing for it. The fried rice was tasty. read more

We were thrown off a bit when we walked in, the place was totally empty and the man who very slowly approached us was wearing baggy cargo pants and a hoodie meant for someone much larger. For a Friday evening, it just seemed a little off. We ordered two #10 meals. They were massive portions, which we liked. My husband doesn't like shrimp so he gave me his. The sweet and sour was bland. The rice was overcooked and tasted a little old, but I liked the shrimp. The pork was weird, there seemed to be shriveled up bits of pork inside the breading. When I want Chinese Veggies fixed traditionally (at least from my 70 years experience) I go here. I have a well rounded palate but prefer 'old style' Cantonese food to the no bean sprouts era we are going through. Service is good, prices are reasonable, food has been beyond any complaints. My favorite might possibly be the House Special Chow Mein. Vegetables are crisp and well seasoned. Sauce has a mesmerizing sweetness. Noodles are midway between soft and crispy and nothing is greasy here. Bless the owner! He let me sign the tab for my meal when I discovered I had left the wallet at home. Granted I eat here at least once a month. And yes, the parking lot is mainly empty except for 7pm Sunday, graduation weekend at HSU. read more

I asked about the differences between the crispy and soft noodles for the chow mein, wanting to make sure that I got the "stereotypical" chow mein and they insisted it was the crispy noodles. I even asked again after they'd taken the order, and again they said it was the one I ordered. It wasn't. The taste of the item is good, but it's not what I wanted so I have no stomach for it. If they were that desperate for the $2 extra I would have been fine if they'd told me it was wrong and let them keep it; but they kept it up that this was the one I wanted. 100% waste of money. This was the worst take out experience. Egg rolls where deep fried puffs with 25% smushy cabbage and 75% air pockets, nothing else. Horrible. Orange and sweet and sour chicken came with awful deep fried completely off looking chicken. The broccoli beef was nasty. The beef was off, like it was sour and there was only about 2 pieces. The broccoli appeared to be frozen and cooked to mushiness. The only thing that was edible was the chow mein (tho it didn't contain chicken, kinda happy about that in hindsight) and the fortune cookies. Everything else went in the garbage. Cannot stress this enough, do not order from here! I do not understand how they are in business. So sad to share such a bad review as the only good thing about this place was the people. They are so very nice. But the food is so bland & greasy!! The sweet & sour sauce tasted like water, cornstarch, & red coloring! We had fried rice, lo mein, cashew chicken, won ton soup....it was all hot & fresh-but none of it was good. The sauce for the cashew chicken just tasted like brown gravy...not authentic or tasty. My significant other and I went to the restaurant because we heard from a friend that the place was good. NOT GOOD AT ALL. The wonton soup was so bland.. just cabbage boiled in water. The cream cheese puffs had the smallest amount of cream cheese possible and everything we ate was completely and overall fried, very hard to eat. Nothing looked appetizing, we were scared to even try the food. The fried shrimp rice was OLD!! and the chow mein noodles were so greasy.. everything was just simply disappointing. We didn't even want to pay for any of it and we're too embarrassed to even confront the situation. Our bill went from $50 to $29, which most definitely was a rip off.. was an overall poor experience. DO NOT COME HERE, you'll waste all your money. The prices are simply not up to par to the food expectations. I'm very disappointed.. I don't even use Yelp, so for me to write a review should say a lot. If I would give it zero stars I would. Go to Szechuan Garden instead!!! read more

I love Chan's. I've lived in SF for the past 10 years but having been born and raised in Humboldt County, I grew up eating at Chan's. Yeah, it's not the most authentic Chinese food I've eaten but it's damn good and I can't find anything close to it in the Bay Area. My family usually gets takeout (family dinner for four) plus a couple of orders of the cream cheese puffs. Their sweet and sour sauce is my personal favorite because it's more sour than sweet and isn't a frighteningly DayGlo shade of red. Plus, the owners are super nice. read more

Just yuck. Prepare to be greeted with the stale stench of stained, mildewed carpet and booths with sunken banquettes. Place was empty, except for a very old man who was asleep at the nearest table. Yes these should've been red flags, but still she persisted. Menu is large but odd, even featuring cheeseburgers and fish & chips (not sure which region of China claims those). Ordered the egg rolls and 1/2 order of fried shrimp appetizers. Egg rolls (3) are the size of a chimichanga, and contain exclusively cabbage. No protein, no carrots even for color..this is just like an Irish burrito. Shrimp had so much breading they leave their fried jackets behind in your hand when you bite into them. The red dipping sauce with spicy mustard was pretty decent, but since it came from a bottle or can, explains a lot. Shared the House Lo Mein (apparently so named because they put the remaining cold cuts from the house inside it). The Cashew Chicken was visually atrocious, with a taste to match. What few bits of grey chicken were found amongst this plate of onions and celery were not consumable. The cashews themselves were *stale* and old. Tasted like they'd been purchased and neglected, left open for years. Like this place. Lastly the Steak Kew - another onion and celery exhibition with a half dozen slices of steamed grizzle. Even the rice tasted old and dusty. Stale bag, no doubt. No other patrons darkened the door throughout our meal, but an elderly woman shuffled between the kitchen and bussing station area where she'd stare at us. Her daughter(?) the cook, made herself a plate and sat at a table near the back while granddaughter(?) and our server, Connie, who's chipper and friendly, showed no surprise that we wanted to take nothing To Go. The fortune cookies weren't even wrapped, just plopped on the money tray with the bill. All I can recommend here is to keep driving. read more

Gotta counter the bad review and get this place more business. Their lo mein is incredibly good, albeit greasy. The guy and his wife who own the place are super friendly people, and remember us every time we come in, which is only about once every year or two. Given, this place isn't in the best location in Arcata, but I'd highly recommend trying it out... This is Canontese Chinese food, whereas what you're used to is Mandarin Chinese food. read more

EXCELLENT FOOD!!! I have eaten at Chans since 1985 with my husband and daughter, but ate there since the 60's with my family, as a child. It seems like it's always been there, because my husband who is 71, remembers eating there as a kid too. It is the same family there, just a different generation! I've lived in Los Angeles and Bay Area as an adult, but came back to Humboldt county in 1985. We watched Andy Chan's children grow up over the years, and have always seen his parents in there. A family owned restaurant in every sense of the word. You never see a crowd at Chans, and many times there are only one or two other customers in there. DON'T let it fool you. They have a lot of to-go orders, and a banquet room in the back. They also have the most consistent cooking I've ever seen. It is alway great, and very fast and fresh! I usually ordered the Ginger Beef (I held the green bell peppers) which is served over white rice, in a delicious sauce. If you like ginger, and a subtly sweet sauce, this is the BEST I've found. The BBQ pork is also worth ordering, which comes with hot mustard. GREAT stuff! I've tried to recreate it in my own kitchen, but it's never been as good as Chans! My husband always ordered the Chow Mein or Lo Mein with pan fried noodles. Our daughter varied her menu, but was always happy with whatever she ordered. The Pork Fried rice is the best I've ever had! I can make a meal out of just the rice, and usually order some to go, so I can have it the next day. We have since moved to Eugene, Oregon, and I'm trying to figure out a way to get the Chan family to open a Chans here! I am serious! There is not one Chinese restaurant in Eugene or Springfield that can compare, and a couple that are just plain BAD! I think the rice (fried or white) in a Chinese restaurant, along with the BBQ pork should taste just like Chans, and I've been disappointed so many times in other establishments. One place in Los Angeles had rice that was as good as Chans, called "Sub Gum rice" and I would buy my rice there, but goo a few blocks to the other Chinese restaurant to order my sweet and sour pork, which was better than the other restaurant. SO, yes...I am pretty picky when it comes to my rice AND my Chinese food in general. Regardless of the atmosphere, the food is great if Andy Chan and his parents are still there. We left in 2011 so I'm not sure the old folks are still alive. I read a review of a "Very old man who was asleep at the nearest table, which should have been red flags" and recognized that it was probably Andy Chan's father. I read several other "bad" reviews, with someone even mentioning a waste of good real estate...sounds like someone wants the prime real estate that Chans sits on to me. Or someone trying to knock out the competition. To the Chans: Come to Eugene or Springfield. We LOVE your cooking!!! read more

Service was good but the food was horrible. The shrimp fried rice was a large portion it was mainly rice they skimped out on the rest of the ingredients. The shrimp was what you put in salads and there were only 6pcs. It was over priced I would've been happier at Panda Express. read more

The lemon chicken was amazing and my girlfriend loved the almond chicken chow mein. Plus the portion size was exactly what i want in chinese enough to fill me up and then some.
