We were in Kailua one night and looking for a place to have dinner. We stumbled upon this place. The food was ok, but not as good as other Thai restaurants on the island. We got the spring rolls $16, panang curry with seafood $26, large sticky rice $5 and evil prince chicken $19. The spring rolls were the best items of the night. They were super crispy and didn't contain pork, so my hubby could consume it. It was on the small side. My panang curry was watery and spicy. I asked for it to be mild, but it was way spicier than what I'm used to. It needed more coconut milk. For some reason they don't have Thai iced tea or Thai iced coffee on the menu. I asked the server and she said that they could make it. She came back and said that they didn't have condensed milk and if we wanted coconut milk instead. It was a hard no for me. We ordered 5 different items and they were all tasty. My big complaint is the portion vs price. I opened my take out box and it was not even halfway full. I decided to call and tell them that there may have been a mistake and I didn't receive a full portion. They doubled down and told me that they were correct and would not refund my item or give me a corrected portion. This is very unfortunate because you can tell they are struggling. Entire staff is welcoming and very helpful in recommending items from their extensive menu. The portions are not small but it takes a couple of entrees to fill you up. Very good flavor and texture. Saeng's is located in Kailua, next to Formaggio's and the pist office & is our favorite Thai restaurant! Why does it make it our favorite? 1. Service- From the hostess to the waitress to the. food server to the waterboy, everyone is so nice and on top of their game. And Kudos to the Chef who gives huge portions, so it's okay to have a little wait for your food! 2. Atmosphere- It's not a big restaurant but it transports you to Thailand with their exquisite wood statues and artwork . 3. They are the only Thai restaurant ( at least on the Windward side) that makes my favorite dish Mee Krob!! Mee Krob is a Krispy thin noodle dish that seems to be tossed in a sweet plum sauce, garnished with bean sprouts and scallions and is absolutely yummy!! 4. Their corkage fee is only $10!! They are closed from 3-5pm and always people waiting to be seated right at 5pm, so reservations are suggested. Im local and usually eat at another resturant but we where close so mu wife said lets try. this was the worst Thai food I have ever eaten. It took 50 minutes to bring us foor with only 3 customers at 5:00. The Pad Thai did not taste anything like Pad Thai. it tasted like tomato noodles fish sauce. The Laab had no ginger lemeongrass or lime flavor or heat. It tasted like bland ground beef with some onions and fish sauce. The soup was barley enough to fill four samall bowls for filled for $25 bucks. I was scaping the bottom of the bowl for that. Each plate was $20 plus and was barely enough for two people to share. The portion size was so so small easpecially for the price. If food is good i will pay any price but this food horrible and high priced. We were starved after waiting 50 minutes so we ate it but then had to go eat again since it was not enough. Our family from the philipines said the portions were very small and that says alot since portions in the philipines at resturants are really small. Nope. I hate to hate on this place because there does not seem to be any good Thai food on Oahu. With that said, I guess this place is the best of the worst? First, the positive - the spring rolls were incredible! I could've eaten two orders of them by myself and called it a meal! The curry on the other hand, not good. It was so thin. More like a broth than a curry with very little flavor to speak of. The veggies were SEVERELY overcooked. I felt like I was eating at a nursing home where everything is cooked beyond recognition so no one looses their dentures while eating. And the most psychotic thing I have ever experienced with a curry dish...they didn't include rice! Just shocking. I had to cook mine at home after ordering delivery. Had the best dining experience at this Thai restaurant! Susan was our server, and she was fantastic. The place has such an inviting vibe and the ambience is just right. The food? Absolutely amazing. ALL HOMEMADE!!! Isn't that the best thing ever... It's hands down the best tasting Thai food I've had on Oahu. We tried the yellow curry, panang curry, pad kee mao, and pad thai--all were 10/10. We were recommended this place by a family member and glad we got the chance to try Saeng's! We were in Kailua so we decided to try this place that was recommended to us. When I searched them on Yelp it says that they close on Fridays at 2pm, but when I called they were open. It also says they're closed on Saturday & Sundays but I would recommend calling since the hours don't seem accurate. Anyways, the gentlemen on the phone was very nice & helpful. I ordered the crispy fried chicken, spring rolls, and asked him to recommend one other dish with mixed veggies. He suggested the Thai ginger with mixed veggies & pork. We also got a side of jasmine rice. The fried chicken was not a huge portion but tasty and comes with the sweet chili sauce. The spring rolls comes with lettuce, mint & cucumbers. And the Thai ginger dish we got medium spice and this was my favorite dish! It came with pork (your choice of protein), baby corn, zucchini, onions, carrots, green beans & broccoli. I would've liked it spicy but we got it mild for personal reasons. Nonetheless, it was really tasty and they gave a generous portion. The sauce that they cook it in has a lot of flavor and taste really good when you pour it on your rice. The waiter/cashier gentleman who helped us with our order was very very nice and he was even so accommodating to bring our order to our car when it was ready. They do take a while to make your order so I recommend calling them about half an hour ahead of time so that you don't have to be waiting around there unless you don't mind. There is minimal parking, but I heard there's also parking in the back or across the street if you can't find parking right in front. Thank you to my aunty & uncle for the recommendation! We dined here on Christmas day when most restaurants were closed. We were not expecting much and were blown away by the service. My husband and I are vegetarians, and asked if could make the panang curry vegan for us. Most Thai restaurants use pre-made curry paste which includes fish sauce or shrimp paste and only a few restaurants that make their own curry inhouse are able to make it vegan. I have not had such good Panang curry anywhere. All in all, we had a great dining experience. read more

Tom Kha tofu soup is amazing! I've eaten here before but have not posted. This time I wanted a light meal of soup. While soup is a simple meal, it's also something where every ingredient matters for taste. While a lot of tofu soups are bland, Saeng's hit the taste buds with flavor. read more

Lunch Special - Thai chicken pho Broth was very good, different from Vietnamese style, not as herb infused, but made for a nice lunch. This is a fantastic Thai restaurant. A few of us decided on a whim to snag some Thai food and didn't want to drive to Honolulu. This spot is a gold mine, not very busy with a great atmosphere and very attentive staff. The Pad See Ew with chicken was exceptional and if ordered Thai Hot, is very hot. I have been to Thai restaurants in many different places and this one is up there from an authenticity stand point and quality of service. Saeng's in located in a strip mall next to the Kailua post office. Usually parking is tough but on Thursday night around 7:30 plenty of spaces. Restaurant was had 5-6 tables full so lots of tables available. Menu has a good selection of Thai dishes. Maybe too many because having Japanese, especially sushi, in a Thai restaurant is a little strange. Could they be good at both? We decided to stick to classic Thai and ordered spring rolls, stuffed chicken wings, pad Thai, and yellow curry. Spring rolls came out first. Rolls were small and fried in a donut kind of shell. Seemed kinda oily but tasted good. Same with the stuffed chicken wings. Pad Thai was flavorful without being overpowering as was the yellow curry. Portions were on the small side and prices on the high side. Service was great. Overall, I've had better and worse Thai food so for me Saeng's is A-OK. I'd come back. read more

Ordered takeout from Saeng's on the evening of Wednesday 11/11/2020. We ordered 4 appetizers and 4 entrees, and were told it'd be about 25 minutes for our food to be ready. After 20~ minutes we drove over; when we arrived, there was about 8 different parties already waiting for their food. We had to wait an additional 20 minutes, about 45 minutes total, for our food to actually be ready. Before Covid, we'd dine in/order out from time to time and never waited that long, so not sure what caused the hold up this evening. Our order consisted of 2 Spring rolls, 2 Beef Sautee, 2 Shrimp Pad Thai, Pork Pad See Ew and a Chicken Curry. The sauce with the Beef Sautee is delicious but the beef itself was overcooked and dry. The spring rolls were okay, but overly oily. The Chicken Curry was good but nothing all too special. Luckily all our noddle dishes were very good. I always stick to the Pad Thai when I eat at Saeng's and I'm always happy with it. Our bill came up to $121. Their prices have definitely gone up over the years! The food is good, but the portion sizes and spotty quality don't justify the cost. If you're craving Thai Food, Saeng's will satisfy, but it's expensive and depending on the day, quality can be really disappointing on some dishes. read more

Service: slow Food: tasty. Pad Thai, Penang and Evil Prince were winners! Location: Kailua across Times Seat yourself upon entering (?) My friend suggested this cute place for lunch and although the place was empty, service was extremely slow. We weren't sure whether to wait to be seated or seat ourselves so we just plopped ourselves down after the only other table there suggested we get our own menus too. This place must do a lot of take out to be in business for as long as they have. The food is good, portions are on the smaller size..on a side note I've gained a pound for every year I've been yelping, so smaller portions are probably what I need. read more

I may try this place again as I heard it used to be realty good. I ordered panang curry tofu, which literally was like soup with hardly anything in it. There were maybe a dozen canned green beans and a handful of tofu cubes. I ordered sticky rice and medium hot curry. I can taste butter in the curry, this is a well known attempt to cover for a poor dish, there would NEVER be butter in authentic Thai curry. When I opened the Togo container there was a blob of a tablespoon of chopped peanuts floating on the surface, so they cook didn't even bother to stir it in. This was an epic example of phoning it in on the part of the cook. Super disappointing, at any price, but especially for 20 bucks. Just awful. read more

During our last stay in Kailua, we ordered takeout from Saeng's. It was a Monday and our favorite Lemongrass was closed. Even with many one star reviews, we decided to give them a try. It turns out their one star rating is rightly earned. The summer rolls were fresh but tasteless, and the peanut sauce to dip them in was watery. The tofu pad thai had a pleasant taste but the few pieces of tofu were badly fried. Besides the tofu, there was nothing else in the noodles. The chicken pad see ew did not have the distinctive smoky flavor and barely had any sauce at all. Finally we had one of their specialties, the cashew basil chicken. It was good but the serving size was meager. One thai ice tea was ordered but was not in the bag when we returned to our beachfront vacation rental. They said it would be refunded to my credit card, but that never happened. When we picked up our food, the restaurant was empty. Obviously, it is not a local favorite and relies on tourists to keep them open. I hope this review and the many like it gives Saeng's a wake-up call. read more
