We enjoyed our meal at chaos , I had my bowl with brown rice and the rest of family had with noodles. Portions are large and the ingredients seemed fresh and abundant. My only minor complaint is that I didn't see prices anywhere so had no idea what the meal would cost . FYI it about 11-12 for adult meal and 7-8 for kids meal. Good option for those looking for vegan or vegetarian. Strict vegans, the cooking surface may have cooked meat.. so maybe not. I know some Mongolian Grill places will honor a request to clean the surface first, but I did not ask. But for the rest of us just looking for a meal with no meat, this works well. The Skinny: Parking is easy. Seems like it can get crowded at lunch time. We were a little early. Go in, grab a table. Then head to the buffet area. If a server is around, they will ask if you want the included soup. When we went it was some chicken broth based so I did not try it. Also get drinks. Grab one of the small metal bowls. Fill it up. There is a meat station, with some warning about taking too much. :) I passed this station. Then veggies and they have tofu. It was a pretty good selection. Then sauces. Put the sauce(s) in the small containers in front of them. Not on the bowl of stuff. Hand the bowls and sauces to the guy at the counter. Indicate if you want white rice, brown rice, fried rice, or noodles. He will give you a number. Grab chopsticks here. Do not pay now. Take the number to your table. They will bring out the cooked meal to you. Enjoy. The server will bring out a check and take payment. My dish with noodles, veggies, tofu, and lots of chili oil was very good. Place was clean. Service was good. My only complaint was that it was a little confusing for me being a first timer, what the protocol was... perhaps some signage would help? But overall a good experience. read more

I used to be a Genghis Grill fan, but this place puts them to shame! You pay by the amount of food you select in your bowl, and I fill mine up! They have around 12 sauces you can choose from as well. They provide you with a soup broth while you wait. Service is always super quick and efficient. read more

This is a great lunch or dinner option in the Brainerd area. Upon being seated, you're given a metal bowl to fill with whatever meats/seafoods, spices, fruits, veggies, ect. that interest you. Then you choose a sauce (or mixture of a couple as I like to do), pick a starch like rice, noodles, or tortillas, and they quickly cook up your own tailored stir fry. The flavor of your bowl depends on what choices you make so keep that in mind. They are very affordable, attentive staff, and no parking hassle like the similar Genghis Grill has. They also offer wings now with a variety of sauces that sound good, but I haven't steered away from the bowl yet. read more

There is no instruction on how the place operates (seat yourself, wait to be seated, etc.) but they were very cordial in answering my questions and explaining how things worked. LOVE this place! My former favorite Chinese restaurant has been skimping on the chicken & fish lately, I guess in an attempt to keep costs down, and Chao's is now my go-to. I love that you can choose how much and what kind of ingredients you want, and once you do, the food is quickly prepared. The meal includes a "salad" - basically just a bowl of iceberg lettuce; I'd rather have a bowl of egg drop soup, but then again, you can get whatever veggies you might want in your stir-fry. The service is incredible! I treated a friend to lunch and when the waitress saw her opening her gifts and I mentioned it was her birthday, she surprised us by coming out with a piece of cheesecake with a candle in it. Leftovers? No problem - they'll bring you a take-out box. I find I usually have enough for a second meal. Did I mention that I LOVE this place? read more

Excellent! Went here with my girlfriend for dinner late on a Thursday night. It was pretty empty (there were two other tables occupied at the time). The waiter was prompt and we were oriented to the whole process. I had the sliced beef, broccoli, and onions with Chao's Mongolian sauce. It was delicious! Not too salty or overly sweet. The restaurant is located in a shopping center. The food was good and reasonably priced. Dinner was $11.95. Dinner includes rice or noodles. Each dinner gets a metal bowl and you can pick your ingredients. They had steak, pork, chicken, shrimp, lots of different vegetables- mushrooms, bean sprouts, cabbage, water chestnuts, broccoli, corn, sugar snap peas and lots more. Very much your stereotypical "Asian" joint. But this food is PHE-NOM-E-NAL! Everything is fresh. From the many selections of meat and vegetables, to the large choice of spices, there's lots to choose from. Grab the small (yet surprisingly bountiful) bowl, fill it to overflowing, spice it up, select a delicious sauce and a starch (rice, noodles, etc.) and hand it off to the geniuses at the grill. I come here at least once a week and it never gets old! Staff is always above and beyond hospitable. Here you get a bowl to fill up at a raw bar containing various meats and veggies. After filling up your bowl you get to choose a sauce and starch (i.e. rice, noodles, tortilla) to be cooked with your bowl of uncooked meats and veggies. Always comes out tasting amazing! The food was exquisite! So many meats and vegetables to choose from. There were a lot of spices as well you could choose from. You can choose how much every food item you want. You pick the food and they cook it. Overall the food itself is a 5/5. Now I can't give the service the same grade. For service I will give it 3.5/5. Our waitress was very off today. She was filling up my cup of water and someone let it overflow. Then she went over to another table and dropped a plate. The decoration of the place was very simple. The broth soup was bland and we could've skipped it, but the rest of the meal was wonderful. Of course you pick your own ingredients, so it's hard to go wrong!
