We've drove past this place 100 times or more since moving to Cocoa and I'm so glad we finally stopped in. It's worth every star! First of all the restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. They took Covid very seriously with social distancing and mask on everyone. Our server was amazing and offered terrific service. They took my fiancé's allergies very seriously. We were seating immediately and food came out super fast. Our food was absolutely delicious. Portions are big. Prices are great. The margaritas are amazing. What an awesome late lunch at the Chaparral! The service was excellent, and Jessica was the best! Loved the freshly made salsa. The shrimp, chicken and beef tacos were delish. Great portions, and we took home enough for supper. Their house margaritas were perfect. I had two! Prices were reasonable, especially for the excellent quality. Chaparral is a great place to got to for good Mexican, or just to have a couple of beers. The food is top notch, the food prices are fair, and they have good happy hour prices for beer and margaritas. Our server Tanya was excellent as always. We had a birthday in the group, and she brought us a nice piece of flan with a candle which was fun. They have a bar in the back room which is a friendly place to sit and meet with your buddies. read more

Stopped in here last April while vacationing in Florida. My fiance and her friends wanted Mexican food and I'm okay with that, but I tend to find most Mexican food bland. This place boasted some Cuban offerings, so we gave it a shot after a trip to the beach. The atmosphere ia definitely Mexican. It wasn't terribly busy, but it is a fair sized restaurant. We were promptly seated and drink orders taken (which was mostly water as the group had just come from a beach bar, except me since I don't drink). Food choices are 80/20 Mexican food. I opted for a Cuban sandwich. We were given free chips and salsa that were OK, but the rest of the group thought they were pretty good. My cuban sandwich was a bit dry -- that may be how they are made -- but it could have used some kind of mayo to pair with it. The meat was cooked well and was tasty. There wasn't much to it as it was mostly bread and the meat. I liked it and it was reasonably priced. Reminded me of a gyro. It was $8.25, as I recall. The rest of the group got Mexican food and were fairly pleased. The waitress touted some special black beans that I tried and tasted like regular black beans to me. The food overall was pretty good and the price point was fair for what we ordered. The next time I visit the area, I can't say I am going to make a special trip to try Chaparrel's again. There wasn't anything wrong with it, but it wasn't anything that knocked anyone's socks off, either. It is decent food at a decent price, and I appreciate having Cuban offerings available as well. There is no reason not to give Chaparrel's a try as it does offer a little bit more variety than typical Mexican restaurants. read more

Huge disappointment. I ordered Carnitas to go with a side of plantains. Carnitas are hands down my favorite thing to order at a Mexican restaurant so I had high hopes. They were lack luster at best. Overcooked chunks of pork that appeared to have been boiled. Not even any crispy bits. I figured they probably tasted better than they looked. I was wrong. They didn't taste seasoned and I spent a lot of time separating the chunks of fat from the edible bits. I ate about a quarter of them before I stopped torturing myself. Then came the rice and beans. They looked decent enough but, like the carnitas, they lacked seasoning. I ate about a quarter of those. The salsa has a very odd herb flavor that I cannot place. It was just ok, too soupy for me. The pico de gallo was mostly just chopped onion. The only thing I enjoyed was the plantains and they weren't even cooked enough. For about $23 before tax and tip, it downright sucked. read more

This place has a very welcoming atmosphere. All the servers and the host were super kind and knowledgeable. It was quiet there compared to most restaurants. I ordered the chimichanga plate which was delicious! I also got a Cadillac margarita with salt, which was amazing. The chips and salsa are so good, and they even brought out a more mild salsa for my daughter (without me asking) since the main salsa had more of a kick. Everything here was well priced. Got very excited at first when we found this place, but after this, somehow, things went south... not sure what changed and why but our last experience was below average. Missing ordered items, very bland flavors (like very disappointing), low quality meats (either only fat or really dry (recooked?)), very unpleasant smell on several dishes... again, really dunno what happened but every time we went back it got worth :( Servers are still very nice tho. read more

We were in Merritt Island and we were staying in a resort for the weekend. For the lunch we searched around for the place and we decided to have lunch at Chaparral Mexican Grill. We were a big group of 8 people and thanks to the restaurant for accommodating us. We were greeted by our server Danie when we took our seats with the menu. After some time server bought chips with medium and spicy salsa. The chips and salsa were delicious and fresh. We loved our start. Along with the chips we ordered Guacamole and Queso. The guacamole and queso were delicious. We loved both of them. First we started with drinks which included Flora Margarita, Azul Pom Margarita, Irish Margarita and for food we ordered Chimichanga, Fajitas which included chicken as well as veggie fajitas, Quinoa Fiesta, Fish Tacos and Fajitas Quesadilla. First we got our margarita drinks which were amazing and we loved our drinks. Then we got our food which was delicious and we loved the mexican food. Everything was good and delicious. The one thing which we didn't like was fish tacos. The fish tacos were sweet. We had fish tacos before but they were never sweet. So i believe fish tacos could be improved. I used to love this local restaurant but something has happened in the kitchen here...I ordered my favorite spinach enchiladas and the dish came to me as a disaster: barely cooked and still crunchy spinach and mushrooms, with grease on top of stiff enchiladas instead of the delicious cream sauce I have enjoyed so many times. It tasted horrible. I was able to get something else and opted for a chicken quesadilla, which was fine. The guacamole appetizer was also good. My friend's entree came with rice and beans and she said the rice was very undercooked and crunchy. Anytime you have a meal that is broken up and delayed by a disastrous entree you aren't having a great meal, though I give them credit for quickly and effectively making it right. It's time to try the other Mexican restaurants in our city...there are at least four more Mexican restaurants in Cocoa! read more

I ordered take out and instantly regretted it. Way overpriced for what it was and was not what they advertised. Meat was barely that. Tasted like cheap meat that had been in the freezer for a year and then cooked in water. Rubbery, no flavor. I took one bite and I couldn't do it beans were also watery. The canned stuff is better then whatever it is they gave me. Flautas were made with flour tortillas and not corn, it was confusing. Just dunked them in the salsa to choke it down since I paid almost $60 for this monstrosity. Salsa was surprisingly good and guacamole wasn't too bad but that's as good as it gets. read more

Finally found the best Cuban restaurant by ordering from the Cuban menu of this Mexican-Cuban restaurant. Who knew? It's billed as a Mexican restaurant, and the Mexican food is delicious, as well, but their Cuban food is (almost)as good as I remember my mom's being, and that's saying a lot because no one else has come close. Chaparral Mexican Grill-Cocoa-0.5-Stars Swill Alert***** "Food is our common ground, a universal experience." -- James Beard With the recent passing of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show's front man, Ray Sawyer, and my recent visit to one of three Mexican/Cuban restaurants owned by the same group, El-Leoncito, I was reminded of how much fame meant to some people. In the case of the late Ray Sawyer, it was getting his "picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone," for the latter it must be owning the most swill slingin' slop houses on the Space Coast. As I have only been to one, I guess that isn't fair of me to prejudge the other two, but if I go by this meal... Stepping inside the brightly painted Mexican/Cuban themed spot, Chaparral Mexican Grill in Cocoa, I was greeted, seated and handed a menu professionally. Awaiting my server, I took the opportunity to read the menu. They claim to be Mexican/Cuban, but I found the bulk of the offerings to be of a Cuban nature. Shortly after being seated, I was approached my my server, Maribel. Sadly, this was the second place today where the service was glacial. Other than being slower than a snail on a Minnesota winter morning, Maribel did a bang up job. I asked her for one order of Tacos de Carne Asada. With plenty of time to kill while waiting for my food (did I mention the sluggardly service?), I shifted my gaze towards my surroundings. If the menu in a supposedly Mexican/Cuban joint was leaning a bit towards the Cuban side and not so much the Mexican side, the walls certainly more than made up for it. With pictures of rifles, some wagon wheels and a long horn skull thrown in, I got the feeling I was in the prop department of the University of Texas (hook 'em Horns)! Just as the longing for a good college football game was reaching it's zenith, Maribel was seen ponderously approaching my table. The chips and salsa that are complimentary in most restaurants like this were, I kid you not, not only from Sam's' Club, but were stale as all get out to boot! The salsa literally had zero flavor. The rice found on the side of my Tacos de Carne Asada likewise had zero flavor. It was like I was eating little white puffs of air. The re-fried beans had the consistency of so much baby kaka, looked the same and had zero flavor as well (I was actually thankful for that), Now, on to the Tacos de Carne Asada. I figured with the crappy sides and stale gratis chips, they only direction to go for this meal was up. Man, was I wrong. To begin with the tortillas that made up the Tacos were, like the chips, stale beyond belief and tasted not unlike Styrofoam packing peanuts. The meat is so low grade it is almost horse meat. Now, horse meat may be a delicacy in France, but I assure you, this is not France (we never give up #Murcia)!! The meat was so horrid as to be rendered inedible and I was forced to spit it out. I tried to take one for the team, but I just couldn't force it down no matter how much I tired. This place is worse than the Alamo on their worst day and they are now out of business due to several factors, chief among those the plethora of health code violations they received just prior to closing for good. I can unequivocally say that my meal at Chaparral Mexican Grill was absolutely disgusting and well deserved of a Swill Alert.
