I used to love this local restaurant but something has happened in the kitchen here...I ordered my favorite spinach enchiladas and the dish came to me as a disaster: barely cooked and still crunchy spinach and mushrooms, with grease on top of stiff enchiladas instead of the delicious cream sauce I have enjoyed so many times. It tasted horrible. I was able to get something else and opted for a chicken quesadilla, which was fine. The guacamole appetizer was also good. My friend's entree came with rice and beans and she said the rice was very undercooked and crunchy. Anytime you have a meal that is broken up and delayed by a disastrous entree you aren't having a great meal, though I give them credit for quickly and effectively making it right. It's time to try the other Mexican restaurants in our city...there are at least four more Mexican restaurants in Cocoa! read more

Chaparral Mexican Grill-Cocoa-0.5-Stars Swill Alert***** "Food is our common ground, a universal experience." -- James Beard With the recent passing of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show's front man, Ray Sawyer, and my recent visit to one of three Mexican/Cuban restaurants owned by the same group, El-Leoncito, I was reminded of how much fame meant to some people. In the case of the late Ray Sawyer, it was getting his "picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone," for the latter it must be owning the most swill slingin' slop houses on the Space Coast. As I have only been to one, I guess that isn't fair of me to prejudge the other two, but if I go by this meal... Stepping inside the brightly painted Mexican/Cuban themed spot, Chaparral Mexican Grill in Cocoa, I was greeted, seated and handed a menu professionally. Awaiting my server, I took the opportunity to read the menu. They claim to be Mexican/Cuban, but I found the bulk of the offerings to be of a Cuban nature. Shortly after being seated, I was approached my my server, Maribel. Sadly, this was the second place today where the service was glacial. Other than being slower than a snail on a Minnesota winter morning, Maribel did a bang up job. I asked her for one order of Tacos de Carne Asada. With plenty of time to kill while waiting for my food (did I mention the sluggardly service?), I shifted my gaze towards my surroundings. If the menu in a supposedly Mexican/Cuban joint was leaning a bit towards the Cuban side and not so much the Mexican side, the walls certainly more than made up for it. With pictures of rifles, some wagon wheels and a long horn skull thrown in, I got the feeling I was in the prop department of the University of Texas (hook 'em Horns)! Just as the longing for a good college football game was reaching it's zenith, Maribel was seen ponderously approaching my table. The chips and salsa that are complimentary in most restaurants like this were, I kid you not, not only from Sam's' Club, but were stale as all get out to boot! The salsa literally had zero flavor. The rice found on the side of my Tacos de Carne Asada likewise had zero flavor. It was like I was eating little white puffs of air. The re-fried beans had the consistency of so much baby kaka, looked the same and had zero flavor as well (I was actually thankful for that), Now, on to the Tacos de Carne Asada. I figured with the crappy sides and stale gratis chips, they only direction to go for this meal was up. Man, was I wrong. To begin with the tortillas that made up the Tacos were, like the chips, stale beyond belief and tasted not unlike Styrofoam packing peanuts. The meat is so low grade it is almost horse meat. Now, horse meat may be a delicacy in France, but I assure you, this is not France (we never give up #Murcia)!! The meat was so horrid as to be rendered inedible and I was forced to spit it out. I tried to take one for the team, but I just couldn't force it down no matter how much I tired. This place is worse than the Alamo on their worst day and they are now out of business due to several factors, chief among those the plethora of health code violations they received just prior to closing for good. I can unequivocally say that my meal at Chaparral Mexican Grill was absolutely disgusting and well deserved of a Swill Alert. Good resturaunt different times for business, recomend the steak or chicken fajitas, ask if you need any additional items with meal also chips & salsa is great we get mild . Very considerate & constantly consistent with all food . Also enchilada's chicken and beef burrito is good yellow rice and beans . Ask for sauce on enchiladas. Celebrate birthdays & on certain days a mariacho band there. Service is always great just remember they are a restaurant & food comes in timely fashion. Family or meeting area there as well. Taco Tuesday works here. They have an entire menu page for different types of tacos, I tried the puerto pico, and the el lioncito and both were great. The chips and salsa were freshly made and the seasoning was perfect. The special gets you two tacos with rice and beans. I had an additional taco for $.95 as did one of my guests and lunch came to less than $30. Perfect the service was friendly and efficient and everything was clean. All COVID guidelines were followed even though they mainly used the front dining room everything was well spaced. We will be back. read more

This review is 3.5 stars...came here as a last minute decision. Had a taste for some authentic Mexican food. Haven't been to this place in over 10 yrs or so. As soon as we walked in we were seated right away. It was a few couples and families there on a Saturday night. The tortilla chips were brought out. They could've been a lil warmer. The salsa dip was good. The main thing I was craving was Birria tacos . But unfortunately this was not on the menu. So I just ordered a few ground beef tacos. They were cool...the meat had pretty good flavor. The beans and rice was cool too. Nothing out of the ordinary or that made it stand out more than the same dish I had at other Mexican restaurants...But I would come here again if they started selling Birria tacos read more

Ordered Cuban sandwich: sandwich was frozen, microwaved, and stuck on grill. Sandwich was not good.

So to start out, we ordered some house margaritas and those were delicious. Then came the chips and salsa. The red salsa is not bad, but the spicy green stuff is terrible. I ordered the carne de asada tacos. The meat had a good grilled flavor, but the rice was still hard and chippy. The beans weren't bad. The only reason I give them a 3 is for the margaritas. I love this restaurant. My friends, family and I have been going here for years. The owner is always upbeat and friendly. The food is always good. Cold beer and awesome margaritas at a fair price. I can't believe someone would leave a bad review based on a photo that was in the lobby of our Governer Ron DeSantis. That photo has been there for years. Last time we went, we noticed it was taken down. Now the mask wearing cry baby that posted the negative review can breathe a sigh of relief. This was our first time coming to this restaurant, really good mexican decorstions and peaceful atmosphere,our friends had told us it was very good and the food was something to try. Well they could not have been more right lol, as soom as we arrived the host wss very attentive. Quickly sat us down, and gave us free little shots to try from the bar (husband and i are over 21), he asked for our IDs and made sure we were legally able to drink. Then after that came our waitress, i know her name started with an M but I dont remember it. Staff was just splendid, theyre attentive but not over the top. Now as for the food what can I say except wow! They give you free chips and salsa and boy was that salsa fresh! I think the hubby and i talked about it the whole time we were there . For an appetizer we ordered the mango ceviche, im not one for food with Mango in them, but that ceviche was delicious! And its enough for two people, highly recommend if anyone ever visits. As for our entree we both order a combo platter with three choices we got two tacos one with chicken and another one with carnitas, tacos were okay, maybe some pico de gallo would have made it better but not out of this world overall the meat was juicy so it wasnt bad, we also got corn tamal, it had a sauce on top but super yummy with lots of pork meat! The fried beans with cheese on top was as good as it could get and paired really nice with the rice. Overall if you made it through this entire review and you're in tbe cocoa area, highly reccomend you visit this little place! read more

This place was severely disapointing. It used to be good and several people once recomended it. Now it is dirty and gross. The tortilla chips came out stale. I asked if they could fry dome tortillas for me which I felt bad about having to ask but they went in the back and refried the tortillas which made them slightly better. Then a roqch was crawling on the wall and the owner expertly swept it onto the floor and stepped on it like he does this everyday. Verh disgusted had just finished meal. Is is possible to give a rating lower than 1? Had the pork chops, the meat was smelly and must have turned bad. When we brought it to the attention of the manager, he proceeded to cut the meat to smell it, took a bite out of our plate AND Told is that as a Mexican, he KNEW when meat turned bad. Every Monday of the last week of every month, the mariachi band comes and plays songs at customers' requests and it is a blast. The servers do a great job and the food comes timely and never late or forgotten. The highlights of the menu for me are the plantains, fajitas with steak, margaritas, and the flan. read more

Food and drinks were good. I like the Mexican rustic decor. It has a separate bar area that is pretty nice. Happy hour is before 6, half price margaritas. Staff is great and always friendly and tentative. On a holiday when I went the manager was handing out free shots of tequila to the customers so that was super nice. This was the first time my mom and I have been to eat at this restaurant. It is Tuesday so I was looking on yelp for Mexican restaurants for us to go have Taco Tuesday for lunch! We had a great first experience. Our server Tyler was awesome and very attentive, and the food and drinks were all amazing. I could not decide what to eat for awhile because I wanted to try it all. I finally went with the ground beef Chimichanga plate minus the refried beans w/ the queso on the side to use with the chips and salsa and a strawberry margarita. My mom went with the ground beef Wet Burrito plate and an original margarita. We were both very happy with our decision to try this little gem!!!! Though my server was so sweet and explained the special items and drinks available. I wish the food was better. My carnitas were very dry and lacked much flavor. Also my tortillas didn't have that homemade taste and lacked that char that I like when coming off the stove. I might give it a second chance another time. read more

Rode there today on the motorcycles just looking to get something to eat, and as it turns out that is my new favorite Mexican restaurant. As soon as we walked in the staff was very nice. We told them that we were on kind of a time crunch, and they seem to do what they could to get us in and out all the while taking excellent care of us. The food was amazing. They upgraded the bar ambiance and it looks great. Half price margaritas instead of bogo which is great if you just want one. Since there are different sizes be sure to get friendly with the bartender and tell him to put the margarita in the glass you want. Chips and salsa are amazing. I'm new to the area and received a coupon in the mail from the restaurant so decided to check it out. Free chips and salsa for each table was nice. Fresh and tasty. I ordered a Chile relleno and my boyfriend ordered a steak taco for an appetizer. For the main course I had the Ropa Vieja with Cuban bread (available upon request) and my boyfriend had a chicken chimichanga. Both had good flavor and I took leftovers home. We were skeptical first as there were no cars in parking lot, we were first customers at noon. We were thinking about returning back to nearby Indian vegetarian restaurant as we had few guests from India traveling with us. But we dared to go in and were not disappointed. Lunch was great, good portion side. Tacos were good. Most important was guests liked the food ( their second preference is Mexican food after Indian food). My son was super excited , he wrote his special feedback with all happy faces. Wife was happy with Flan. ( I thought that it could be more smooth/soft). If you read my other reviews, you would know that I rarely give a 5 star rating. Chaparral just hit the perfect combo of Margarita, sausa, and service. Then service was great. I was permitted to order somethig that wasn't exactly on the menu. I admit that the perfect Margarita or the perfect sausa is a matter of personal taste. Same owners as El Leoncito and the quality and service is as top notch here as it is at their signature restaurant. I have to say though, this location is very nicely decorated and appears to be bigger than the other locale. I had the Palomilla Steak with plantanos maduros and white rice, with black beans on the side - reminds me of what my dad use to make. My wife had her go to meal, the smothered enchiladas which she loved as always. We topped off the dinner with a nice hellping of fried ice cream we shared, I'm glad we did, because I would not have been able to finish one on my own. The service was okay. I wish she would have come back a couple more times to check on us, but I didn't notice it until late in our dinner since our conversation was just clipping along very well... read more
