I came in to meet a friend for coffee and was immediately drawn in by all the exquisite looking pastry. After ordering my Americano, I ordered a handful of treats, including 3 macaron, a ham and cheese croissant, and a cherry pastry. I enjoyed my coffee over some conversation and took the pastry home to share. I liked the croissant best of everything that I tried. It had a nice proportion of meat to cheese and the pastry was flaky and buttery. The macaron were all pretty similar in taste despite one being a birthday cake, one being a Fruity Pebbles, and a third being a strawberry flavor. The cherry pastry was fine too. My experiences have been good when I've went, however I do wish the interior ambiance in the East Lansing location was more modern. Its starting to resemble a Biggby coffee shop that has been in business for over ten years. Another Issue I have is the price and their hours. Felt good to be back here and able to sit down to drink coffee and eat some cakes. They limit the experience time there to 2 hours maximum because of social distancing. To be honest, we prefer their cake/pastry more than we like their coffee. The coffee for my husband was kinda lack of flavor. I myself ordered matcha and it was not up to my expectation either. This place is a "no" for me. I have been a couple of times trying different things, and one time in a group of 5 and once with another person. Each time we all had the same thought- the food looks beautiful, but it lacks flavor. Stopped in to grab dessert this weekend and my Boyfriend and I were not overly impressed with our selections. The presentation was absolutely beautiful, but we weren't wowed by the flavors. I tried the raspberry mango cheesecake, and it was a little too light an fluffy for my liking. (I prefer a rich and dense piece of cheesecake.) It also had a layer of what seemed like a jellied fruit purée on top, and the texture didn't mesh well with the fluffiness [imo]. The raspberry and mango flavors were too faint in the actual cheesecake as well. My boyfriend had the strawberry short cake and he thought it just tasted like white cake with frosting, and would have loved for the strawberry flavor to pull through better. Chapelure is a French-style Asian bakery, and I love it! It's a bit pricey, especially for students, but it's worth it. My favorite pastry is in the get-it-yourself pull-out drawer--I don't remember what it's called, but it starts with a J, and it's basically a croissant type pastry with a sweet almond filling. They also have other croissants, like plain, chocolate, and ham and cheese. In the glass case, they have fruit tarts and cakes, which are not very sweet and often made with sponge cake. The space itself is warm and welcoming with sofas and chairs. I've seen many people reading, studying, or just chatting over coffee and pastries. Service has always been polite and friendly. I hope to make Chapelure a weekly event, but my schedule has been so crazy. Also, if you go at the end of the day, don't expect your favorite pastry--the last time I went, they were all out because someone had come in earlier and bought all the croissants! read more

Since Chapelure opened this has been thee go to place to for coffee & incredible pastries. What drove me to try this place years ago was my French professor saying this place had the best croissants he had everrrr had outside of France ( which he visited very frequently!) He also said the pastry Chef was trained in Paris. They make their pastries every morning, the ones with custard and almond paste & custard are incredible. I dropped by this place while I was in the area for business. After looking at the pictures, I was really excited to try some of the pastries. When I walked into the cafe it reminded me a of coffee houses I used to frequent in Korea. It was clean and looked like a good place to congregate, snack, study or all three. They focus on Asian and French pastries, which is an amazing combination. Unfortunately, the selection was smaller I expected. It may have been because I came in around 3pm or I may have caught them on an off day, but the pastries fell flat for me. I had some macarons and a butter croissant and both were disappointing. I have had fresh macs and also tried Costco macs, and these one tasted like Costco (not bad, but not good). The croissant was the strangest one I have ever eaten because is was literally flat. Really good pastry. Best I've had in Ingham county. They have a decent selection of buttery pastry, cakes, and tarts. Personally, my favorites are the almond danish and the custard danish. Very quiet, it would be nice if they played some soft music in the background ---- like jazz or classical --- but luckily the clientele weren't crazy loud talkers or that would have drove me nuts! Their full cakes seem beautiful and tasty, but expensive. You can also buy individual pieces of cake. As a student, this is a pretty good place to study. There is usually an open table or two. As this is a place made for lingering, it seems, I have felt no ill will working on a laptop there. Unfortunately, there are limited plugs (and those that exist do not all reliably work) and while I have never checked to see about a free refill policy, at worst there isn't one and at best you would need to bother a member of the staff to refill your drink. Best dessert stop in EL/Lansing. I love this place! All the treats are so tasty, creative and fresh. I recommend trying the fruit options over the more decadent choices - they excel in that area. Chapelure is certainly the best pastry shop ever in East Lansing. They serve both Danish and Asian(Japanese)pastries and cakes. Their products are something like you can taste from one of the best bakeries or pastry shops in big major cities such as New York(or even better I think). They are freshly baked everyday and also after 7:00 pm, there is a half-off deal on pastries in the pull-out drawers. The employees are always so nice and kind. Chapelure is a good Cafe. Essentially, Chapelure is everything that the Red Cedar Cafe strives to be - but fails to. Chapelure makes solid coffee AND great pastries. All within a block of the Red Cedar Cafe. Suffice it to say if your on this side of town there ought to be no hesitation as to which locally owned cafe you should frequent. I've never had a complaint about anything I've ever ordered here (it's always what I expect to receive) and that's more than I can say about Chapelure's remaining competitors. Like most cafe's in Lansing the quality of their end coffee products such as latte's and Cappuchino's could be better; I rarely recieve an excellent latte at chapelure but, I never receive a bad one. I was very disappointed in Chapelure. My friend and I both got something different and both were pretty bad. My chocolate and vanilla layer cake was held together by glue, or so said my taste buds. The products look absolutely amazing, but that's where the goodness stops. I was really surprised at how many people were in there after we tried our desserts. Maybe the coffee is really good? Also, the service was terrible. It took them at least 10 minutes to wait on us, and we were the only ones standing at the counter...and we asked for 2 individual slices to go, all they had to do was grab and box them. (I am usually really patient but was starting to get pretty annoyed about 8 minutes in to the whole ordeal).
