Granted this was for a one night only restaurant flip so I have to go back for their normal menu but this was the best meal I've had in Wausau after living here over a decade! Was there 2 days ago. I ordered the salmon. Portion was extremely small. Even the waiter was embarressed and mention he would get me another piece. Then when he came back with the second piece, it was just bare without any garnish. I had to send it back. My colleague had a burger and a fries which you would expect to be of good quality but burger was drenched in sause and fries were starchy. If I could give 0 stars I would..... but let's make this simple. I never got to eat my meal before we left. We waited over A hour for our entrées and the app (which also took a long time) ....i wish I could say it was gross, but that would involve flavor. I visited the Char on a Saturday morning and enjoyed their Saturday brunch. I order a latte and the brioche French toast. Both were great. The French toast was unique, with both fresh and preserved fruit. The waiter was fabulous--friendly, helpful, efficient. The entire menu was tempting...one dish at a time. read more

I was looking for a good meal and decided to try Char. Located just off the Jefferson Street Inn, I sat at the bar and it was apparent that they were understaffed, as it took a while to order a drink and my meal. Everyone was friendly, just trying to do too much. When the food arrived it looked great, well-plated and appetizing. I ordered the short ribs which were very flavorful and cut like butter. The portion was generous and the delicious short rib was surrounded with plenty of perfectly cooked vegetables. I was very happy as I finished everything and cleaned my plate. When I come back it'll be hard to order anything else but I look forward to trying some other entrees. read more

Came here last year when it was City Grill. I liked the modern updates throughout and the local artwork on the walls. We dined here after the Nutcrackers show in a group and sat in the semi private room in the back. Ambiance- modern, intimate and romantic! Definitely a date night spot and for a fancy dinner. Loved all the luminous Christmas decorations at holiday time. Lots of photo ops white you wait for a table :) Food- a bit pricey ($20-40 for main entrees) and menu features a good selection but a lot of them are on the heavy side (pork chop and risotto). I ended up choosing the crab cake appetizer as my entree which worked out great! You can taste the real crab meat vs. the imitation meat. Wish they brought some warm bread to the table as before under the previous ownership, which I feel like it's expected at fine dining establishments. The rest of the family ordered a burger and chicken Caesar salad. Nothing to write home about. Service- very attentive and friendly! Just wished our food came out faster since it just opened for dinner at 4. Verdict- this is a decent option if you're in the downtown area especially on a Sunday when there's just a few places open for dinner. Personally I would choose a different restaurant for the price point. read more

I was happy to see a new restaurant come into this space. Upon my first impressions the interior is modern, classy and has some intimate spaces which would make it perfect for both a date night or larger dinner. We visited with a group of six on a Wednesday evening and didn't have any trouble being seated. To start out dinner we all got some specialty cocktails which were mixed well and delivered quickly. There were several options and something for most people. There is a fully staffed bar which carries a wide variety of drinks. For food, there were several great looking appetizer options and we went with the bruschetta, which was flavorful and delicious. I went with a chicken dish as my main and I have to say, I am a bit of an experimental eater but there were some very unique squashes and other delicious items I've never encountered before which makes this dinner really stand out. The flavor was excellent and I really enjoyed the entire plate. I will definitely be ordering this the next time I stop in. Others at our table got the pork chop, and it was likely the largest pork chop I have ever seen in a restaurant. From what I heard it was well prepared and flavorful. I am really happy that such a nice restaurant is available downtown. I will certainly return for a great dinner in the near future. read more

We came here for a birthday dinner and left so disappointed. Our waitress was never around, and we had to flag down a different waiter to finish out service. My partner's steak was dry, undercooked, and completely lacked flavor -- and he isn't a picky eater at all, so that says a lot. I ordered the pork shank, which was the driest thing I've ever eaten. It had no flavor, wasn't tender at all, and came out charred black. For a $148 bill, the food was extremely mediocre. The only thing even halfway decent were the drinks. This was supposed to be a special dinner, but it ended up being such a letdown and we left still hungry. Would not recommend, especially for an occasion. read more

Had an awesome dinner Friday night! 10 out of 10. The venison stroganoff was fantastic. Loved the fennel! The lamb chops were cooked perfectly! Roasted carrots sooo good. Very pleased with our family meal at Char. For one thing the restaurant has been remodeled. Gone are the intrusive high back booths and the clunky atmosphere. In its place an open dining area, nicely lit, with Wausau posters on the walls. A large circular bar fills the entry area. The food was extraordinary but portions in some cases quite large such that we might split an order the next tine we visit. We enjoyed the French onion soup, salads, cod and a salmon dish served over a delicious layer of soft potatoes and fresh asparagus. The desserts were very tasty and ample. Where do we start. Food was amazing. Service was horrible. The bartender can't make a drink to save her. Poor thing. And it took her 20 minutes to make the first round of drinks. We were half way through our appetizers before the drinks came. A bottle of wine and one martini. To top it off 2 of 3 appetizers came and my guests were almost done with theirs when the 3rd came. The server said the last one was being plated then stood at the bar for 10 minutes for going to the kitchen to get it. And yes it came to the table warm. I can't believe the bartender took 20 minutes to make a round of drinks. Dinner was done before the second round was delivered. Ambiance was nice. But the service ruined the entire meal. read more

Everything that went by the table looked fantastic. We had the bruschetta for an appetizer and the lamb and the lobster risotto for our entrees. They were delicious. The restaurant just opened last month so everything was new and felt fancy even for a restaurant in a hotel. I feel like we did wait a little bit for the food but there were 3 other tables and the staff that did talk to us told us this was their second day. But I think it will get better with time. Finally a restaurant with outstanding food!! Unbelievably delicious! The scallops and risotto was the best I've ever had! Wife had the filet, hands down the best steak we've both had period!
