Char in Red Bank is one of the most underrated restaurants in Monmouth County, and that's coming from someone who eats at top restaurants locally and around the world. Service always wins in the end, and Char delivers that every time. My office is on the same street, so my wife and I are regulars. We usually walk down around 4 p.m., grab two seats at the bar, and start with a perfectly made cocktail or a great glass of wine. The happy hour specials are always interesting, rotating, and thoughtfully put together, big thank you to head chef Phil, who is absolutely amazing and a true asset to this place. The bar feels relaxed but upscale, which is rare to get right. The dinner menu is both diverse and comfortably traditional, with nightly specials that make Char feel unique rather than just another steakhouse. Tonight we kept it simple and started with French onion soup from the happy hour menu, and it honestly blew me away. It was rich, deeply flavored, and absolutely delicious, easily one of the best French onion soups I've ever had, especially at the happy hour price of about half off (we paid $5.95). We added fresh bread service (no extra charge), and it was warm, fresh, and completely worth the "cheat" on the carbs. We then split a prime rib slider special that was incredibly flavorful for something so simple, it really over-delivered. For dessert to go, we ordered chocolate Nutella chip cookies and chocolate-covered strawberries, which was the perfect way to end the meal. With two drinks, our total bill was $109, which is outstanding value for the quality of the food, drinks, and overall experience in downtown Red Bank. In my opinion, Char is still underrated and remains one of the very best restaurants in the area. Even their Caesar salad stands out, the dressing is spot-on and memorable. Went here for a post-valentines day dinner. Very beautiful ambience and friendly staff. This is a classy establishment that's nice for a date night. We ordered two steaks for our main course and shared a side of potatoes. I can't recall the exact name of the dish but they were thin potato slices with cheese which was very tasty. Our server suggested this side dish as it's one of his favorites. We then ended the meal with the cookie jar dessert which literally came in a glass cookie jar! It was tons of ice cream with cookies, cake, whipped cream, and fruit. It was insane and delicious but we didn't even make a dent in it! My experience here was great and l'd love to come back and try some of the other dishes they offer! Update: I went back recently and had a steak with a side of mashed potatoes and asparagus. MIND BLOWING, no exaggeration. The mashed potatoes were so good I licked the bowl clean, insane. Wow, I am really surprised at the 3.2 stars given to char steakhouse. I dined here in December and I loved it. The place has a nice chic vibe and really good for date night. Drinks were good as well with enough alcohol for me. Felt the service was great and wish that I had the receipt to make mention of the waiter. For appetizers, I ordered the lobster dumpling, which was absolutely delicious. I cannot wait to have them again. We also ordered the classic escargot, which were really really good. Six came with the order. My friend ordered the 12 ounce filet mignon, which I had a piece of and it was cooked to perfection and I ordered the crabcake with the asiago truffle fries and a side of sauté broccoli. Everything was really really good. The sauté broccoli was delicious. The truffle fries were the best I've ever had. Admittedly, I was a little reticent based on a large number of mediocre reviews but while I wasn't blown away the location is attractive, the service appropriate (without being overbearing) and my filet was perfect. The sides were well done right out of steakhouse central casting and the cost is what you'd expect when you're feasting on flesh that has better healthcare than you do. Yum yum yum ! This place is a must if you're in Red Bank . They have plenty of outdoor and indoor tables . I didn't even have a reservation on a hot summer night and they still took me and my party of 4. We sat outside and enjoyed people watching . We started off with some drinks . I did not like my spicy watermelon margarita , there was nothing spicy about it and it was definitely watered down. My mom said the same about her margarita , so their speciality is definitely not their drinks lol. We ordered appetizers , the fried calamari, the tuna tartare, the Kobe meatballs & a mixed field greens salad. All of these were delicious. For entrees we all had the meat and potatoes , with a side of mushroom caps and macaroni and cheese. These were all fantastic , the braised short rib was so flavorful and the garlic cream sauce was amazing. The mushrooms were incredible. We devoured our plates! The only reason this place is not getting 5 stars is because the drinks weren't great and they also do not have a changing table for babies in their bathroom. Char used to be our go to, we either ate in or ordered at least once a week for our family of seven. I don't know what happened. Did they change their meat supplier? Just don't care any more? I'm disgusted that I paid so much money for this horrendous piece of grizzle, fat and sinew! Look at my photos, once the bone, fat and silver skin were cut off, there was not much meat left but it was medium rare so I was hopeful. Now I know this Steak should be marbled, but this was ridiculous, there was a little piece of the middle of the steak left. Even the meat that was left was a joke I could not cut a SINGLE piece of meat without hacking away with my knife because the entire thing had tendons running through it - literally attached together with tendons that I couldn't cut it through at any point. I could literally hang this 'steak' up like a piece of garland attached like rope in the middle of all my attempts at cutting through it. Just a hunk of garbage for $70!! Ok I'll eat my salad, but the dressing is so watery the lettuce became mushy..oh but we have delicious Creamed spinach - nope - somehow it was burnt on top?! Do they cook it in the oven? Sat outside on a gorgeous nite 6 feet from hostess stand. It took 25 minutes to get our drinks and another half hour for appetizers. The manager as well as the hostess never asked how anything was. The manager just kept looking up and down broad street. Tuna tartar tasted like cat food, and we had to ask a bus person for crackers for the tartar. He told us that crackers don't come with it. Food was great starting with the bread service and shared salad. I ordered chicken Milanese and I'm so excited they offer more than steak options and added on chicken choices to the menu. My chicken was crispy and an extremely generous portion plus came with a tiny arugula mix on the plate. My husband's steak was cooked to perfection for him (medium) and loved the roasted garlic accompaniment. Dessert was a shared piece of cheesecake with fruit for dipping. Nice looking place, I went there on superbowl Sunday for a birthday celebration and place was completely empty. In a way it was good because we definitely had privacy, in other way was a bit odd only us a another 2 people was there. Food was good, wine options also good but very limited in cocktails selection. I live in red bank and have not been in Char in two years and now I know why. The place is not clean. I sat at the bar to grab a bite ordering a drink while I perused the menu. I reached under the bar ledge to find a hook for my purse. At the same time I kept getting a whiff of a foul order. Unrelated to the smell what I found under the ledge was no hooks but I did find a lot of gum stuck to the bottom. For a fancy expensive restaurant they are not clean Between the smell and the gum, that had obviously been there for a long time, I left. Then the Main course (for the frugal night) had the char salad with salmon add on. I Would expect the eggs to be organic at the least, but tasted like the 48 pack you buy for $12. Simple minimal add ons in the salad that were average. Ate the salmon, descent small portion of fish. But the best part was having a fish bone lodged in my tonsil after the third bite to top off the night. First time for this to happen with salmon. Maybe I went wrong without getting the more eloquent food on the menu. However if the simple meals are sub par what more should I expect with a pricey entree when I have a better chance at shopping at a club store for a fresh steak or piece of fish and cooking it myself. read more

Brought my mom here for her birthday but condescending manager ruined our meal. I ordered my filet medium rare, when it came out to me it looked medium well. Waiter even agreed with me but needed the managers approval. Manager with a condescending tone told it was just the lighting and said it was in fact medium rare. I know medium rare color and texture, and this wasn't medium rare. However! I decided to drop it and verbally said it's my mom's birthday I don't want to argue, to just drop it and I'll have the steak as is no problem. Manager decided he wouldn't drop it. Continuing a back and forth with me telling me if they make another it'll come out the same. Again, I asked him to drop it but he continued and wouldn't stop. At this point I just wanted to enjoy the meal with my family. Manager proceeded to then return a few minutes later again to bring up the topic that I asked him to drop so I can enjoy some family time just to tell me he "comped my $18 drink because of the steak" and "so you see I'm doing something for you". I don't need $18 from your manager. It's insulting. Speaking to me like I should be thankful for him or he did me a favor. Very frustrating experience, and this manager made it very difficult to enjoy my mom's birthday dinner. All other employees were phenomenal. It's a shame that this manager tarnishes their hard work and this restaurant's name. And that $18 your manager comped, I added it on top of the regular tip for the waiter. Special occasions are something we love to celebrate as a family, Mother's Day especially falls into this category because my Mini-Me's birthday always falls on Mother's Day weekend, something I cherish. This year we celebrated by going to Char. I had read the reviews and of course I always let the food & staff speak for themselves. My hubby made reservation through Open Table at 9:30p 5/7/22. We actually arrived 30min early because weather was terrible and we didn't want to be late, we were seated right away upstairs in a nice 4 top table by the stairs. We ordered 2 glasses of malbec wine, 2 martini's and 2 margaritas. The 1st margarita was a really salty-within the drink itself, so our server exchanged it with no issue-much appreciated. For appetizer we ordered the calamari, shrimp and lobster claw/tail - chilled and delicious. As entrees, 1 combo-filet Pittsburgh style and lobster tail- the filet was very very rare -not Pittsburgh at all- but hubby ate it. 2-12oz petite filets med rare (cooked perfectly and 1 Delmonico cut w/ horseradish crème-cooked medium- it was cooked well, but the sauce needed more zip, pretty bland. Sides were sautéed spinach, mashed potatoes and mac n' cheese-all 3 were delicious and definitely complimented the meals. I have to say the pop-overs are so delicious and I wish the bread basket would make a second round. Of course we had to order dessert, 1 Crème brûlée-husband truly enjoyed his choice. 1- 3 scoop of seasonal sorbet, so that was 2 mango & 1 raspberry- birthday girl enjoyed this and said it was very refreshing. I ordered the bourbon bread pudding- it needed a bourbon sauce, it was served warm, but needed a sauce, and also 1 other single scoop of vanilla bean ice crème. All in all dinner came to a littler over $400.00 and we gave a bit over $140.00 in tip, our server was absolutely fantastic and made our experience and celebration a wonderful night out. So, I am sorry to read others have had a not so great experience, but I just can't say the same for us. 5/9/22-update*** Here is what I completely forgot to mention in my original post-- ROASTED GARLIC!! heck yaaaaaa they give you- GIVE YOU!!!!-- with your steak order, 1/2 a roasted garlic, in all it's sweet-buttery-yummy-mild-heavenly-goodness.. Now, I did not get one with my Delmonico cut, but I snagged both halves from my daughter and her bestie, because I am MOMMA and I can do this!! - oh it was heavenly on each bite of steak.
