May I suggest: It's a few years since I've been back to Charann's, and they don't carry some of the usual items I used to get (farewell, broccoli, cheddar bites! I hardly knew thee) But that's okay now that I've had their famous cheesesteaks, but the turkey version of it. The meat is soft and tender, the cheese melted perfectly in a soft, hot, fresh roll that really hits the spot on a freezing day. They're very generous the peppers and you can add some fixings to it for a moderate and reasonably priced upcharge. The service here is always very fast and friendly and welcoming, and even though I'm outside, they check on me often. They have a great, covered patio that's not only comfortable and inviting, but pet friendly, too, so I can cart my precious Muffin with me on those nights. Came here with a sizable party after a work event-kickball game and the staff was incredibly attentive and accommodating to us on a Friday afternoon. We are back here again for drag queen bingo. We brought a friend that happens to be drinking alcohol. She has had a few with pickle backs. When she asked for and extra pickle back and a larger shot.the server (that was swamped i found out) was taking a loong time. At about 1:10 the bartender told me that the cook/manager refused to make my omelette bc he received the order at 1:01pm. I went to speak to the manager and he was a TOTAL PRICK! This is the best cheesesteak in the Tampa Bay Area if you like just a little (or a lot) of heat with your steak. This is basically a dive bar in a kind of questionable neighborhood. There are lots of TVs, and its not a bad place to watch a Bucs game. But -- go for the cheesesteaks. I suggest ordering at least "medium" hot -- although I like "hot." Charann's is located in a partially occupied non-descript strip mall. The interior atmosphere is standard sports bar. The main event here is Charann's Cheese Steak which has been their marquis for years. That is all I ever order. You can order mild with banana peppers or dial it up as hot as you want to go. Prior to the early 90's, Charann's was located at the foot of the Courtney Campbell Causeway in a cinder block building with a gravel parking lot. It was very dark inside and you had to exit slowly for your eyes to adjust to the bright sunlight. You avoided using the restrooms. It was the perfect dive bar but was torn down for road expansion. Good news, they will be moving at the end of the summer near Home Depot on Hillsborough/Sheldon Rd where they will have an outdoor seating area. read more

We used to love going and ordering steak sandwiches and a basket of fries. Now the portions are much smaller and not worth the trip. Used to order a basket of fries and would split. Now comes on a tiny plate and are told that was only size. When one of our friends ordered a sandwich and his came with fries...larger portion than when ordering JUST fries. Tonight was a disaster, made more disappointing because it's been a favorite spot for years. There was no service. We sat for 15 minutes before a server took our orders and another 20 minutes before we gave up waiting for a drink or a sandwich. We finally canceled the drink order and had the food packed up to go. We had to have our bill redone because she had the prices wrong. A bartender apologized for the incompetent server but I blame the management, which was nowhere in sight. Without sufficient staff on a busy evening, the poor new waitress was helplessly out of her depth. I still love the original Charanns sandwich. Someday I may go back and see if they've obtained a qualified manager to straighten the mess. read more

Their famous steak sandwich which we've been enjoying for over 35 years (from way back on the causeway) has been deteriorating in taste and size for several years. It STILL DISAPPOINTS in both taste and size, and the price, like all other places, has increased. Don't mind paying more for the same good food, but that simply isn't the case. I guess I expected more after reading the reviews. The service was extremely slow. It took at least 45 minutes to get a sandwich. While I only had the two items and a beer, I did wonder quite a bit at the menu. Why does everything come with American cheese as the default? That's... pretty much the worst option one could offer. Meat was flavorless, ordered w/mild pepper which means pepper juice,,,,there was none, and there were big pieces of cooked onion in the meat, which were never a part of the Charann's Steak sandwich!!!!! The waitress, whom we have everytime we go there said new owners had taken over. People have been coming to Charann's for many years for the Steak Sandwich and if the "new owners" don't fix it they'll be out of business. I went to visit my son in TNC recently and he mentioned the new Charanns, so we thought we would try it. Nice clean inside, well laid out, service was good. However, food was terrible. We both made the mistake of ordering the cheesesteak, just some cheap white bread with some kind of meat on it. The wings were ok, but we got the bill for the two of us was like $40, not a good deal.
