    Cuban Sandwich
    Kimberly K.

Hands-down the worst Cuban sandwich I've ever had. Nobody puts yellow American cheese on a Cuban. Not to mention two sandwiches and a small bottle of sprite was $24. Don't waste your time or money.

Lunch plate stew chicken, yellow rice and beans and plantains with Cuban bread, chicken empanada and Cuban all the way!

1st I have to say that I witnessed an act of kindness, I was at Save a Lot picking up some things and I believe it was the owner walked in and delivered 3 bags containing breakfast sandwiches for the cashier, I was curious and asked her what she got and she said she didn't know... she said that he had been in earlier and asked if they'd like breakfast and that he's bring for her. I thought that was so kind. So I called in an order for pick up. I called and ordered the stew chicken lunch plate that comes with yellow rice and black beans, plantains and bread, the Cuban all the way and a chicken empanada! When I picked up my order I told them that I had saw him drop off the food to the cashier and that I wanted to try them out because of their kindness. They have been open for 30 years, the guys at the counter were very nice and the food was amazing! I will definitely be returning! The Cuban all the way was the Bomb! It was hard to share it with my husband lol!

This place USED to be good . I went there today they apparently got new owners . ITS DISGUSTING! I ordered a potato ball it was the worst one I've ever had. It was dry old and falling apart. My simple order of eggs and bacon took over 20 mins to make and I didn't even want it by the time it came out. The prices are TOO HIGH 17$ for a sandwich and eggs? GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE. You'll get food poisoning from here don't ever come here .

Not so super Cuban, found hair inside

Everyone rants and raves about this place. Unfortunately, it's all people exaggerating about overpriced mediocre sandwiches. There is a place in the same plaza with exponentially better food at a much more competitive price. Normally I'd give this place a 2 or three-star rating, but today I found a hair in my sandwich. It turned the mediocrity I normally experience into some more abysmal. I don't think I'll be coming back even if I get outvoted by my friends again. Literally, walk down a few doors to the meat market and save yourself $3 per sandwich and get a much better product. This place is all hype and you shouldn't believe this hype. The portions are kid-sized compared to most Latin American places around town and the food just isn't good enough to make up for it. You can eat at 7 better food places within a mile. You have to order their super Cuban which is $10 to get a normal Cuban. You won't regret walking a few doors down. Seriously I don't understand how people like this place when we live in an area are loaded with more authentic and more substantial options. I have tried almost all the Latin American restaurants in town trying to find the best one. This place is holding down the very bottom of that list. Pro-tip breakfast is better than lunch. If you insist on trying this place out, go for breakfast.

It would be real easy to drive right past this little lunch counter / café located along Waters Avenue, about a half mile east of Sheldon Road, and that would be a terrible shame. The Caribbean Sandwich Shop is tucked inside one of a series of little ethnic shopping strips -- in between a tattoo parlor and a drive-through beer barn. Don't be put off by the neighborhood since this place is serving up some very delicious breakfast and lunch options to their loyal customers. I was out in NW Hillsborough running a series of errands, and checked through my Yelp bookmarks to see what looked interesting. The reviews were absolutely on target about the terrific food being served up at the Caribbean Sandwich Shop which is run by a father - son combo from Puerto Rico. I'm not sure if they actually have a printed menu, since most people come in and order one of the specials from the wipe-off board from behind the counter. In the tradition of a great short-order diner, they just ask for whatever they want, and minutes later the food is delivered to the front counter. The big painted window mural talks about their Cuban sandwiches, so I had that on my mind as I walked through the front door. I looked up on the Specials board to see what looked tasty. The fellow behind the counter told me that today's big seller was a pressed pastrami sandwich, made in the style of a Cuban with thinly sliced meat, grilled onions, cheese, lettuce and mustard all pressed on a Cuban roll. Add a can of Diet Coke to my order, and the whole thing was about $7. SCORE!!!! There was a steady stream of lunchtime regulars who were either sitting at one of the tables, or carrying out their bags of deliciousness. The guys behind the counter seemed to know everyone by name, and also seemed to know everyone's "usual" order. That kind of loyal customer base is a great sign. I see that the Caribbean Sandwich Shop also features a meatloaf sandwich for lunch, so I need to go back and check that out in the near future. If your travels take you along Waters Avenue heading from the Vets towards Sheldon, then do yourself a favor and stop in here one day.

I felt a bit guilty for not continuing my best Cuban hunt last night, so this morning I decided to ask the folks at the Caribbean Sandwich shop if it was too early for a Cuban. The owner looked at me kinda odd, like "huh?". He started saying he didn't have pork this early in the morning, but then pipes up "hang on, I think I may have some in the back". I love these guys. These guys are from Puerto Rico. They run a small but awesome little sandwich shop in a tiny little strip mall on Waters Avenue. It's not much to look at, but looks can be deceiving. They certainly are in this case. If you are familiar with Puerto Rican cuisine, you know what a "sancocho" is. Come and try it here. It's only on Saturdays, and it's gone by 11am, so come early. So, how do these Puerto Ricans fare with a Cuban? One word: outstanding. The trick is the bread and the pork, and on both counts they scored. The pork to ham ratio was still low by my standards, but closer to 2:1, which is a lot better than most other Cubans I've had lately. And the pork was juicy and flavorful, the way pork should be. Sorry Boar's Head, your pork doesn't even come close. I'd give this place 4.5 stars, but I pushed it to five for two reasons. First, they are from Puerto Rico. That counts in my book. But second, the owner's willingness to accommodate my request show the pride they take in their business, and that's good for a 5th star any day. I recommend them highly. As far as small, authentic, and Cuban sandwich serving sandwich shops (even though they're not really Cuban :) this is as good as it gets!

It was one of those days or it seems like you had errands all over town, a day you don't look forward to. Lunch came when I was in the town and country area and I look to my yelp application to see if possible places to eat lo and behold I found I have bookmarked the Caribbean sandwich shop and it was just a few blocks away. So for the next year and was to go there and see what they had to offer for lunch. This is a small establishment like many Latin Americans restaurants are. It was very clean the owners were very friendly and they had a wide array of food to offer. In my quest to find the best Cuban sandwich in the Tampa Bay area I tried their Cuban. I found the coupon to be quite good but definitely not the best I've had in Tampa periods you have to remember I've been doing this for quite a few years and finding the perfect cube in that is like maybe trying to find a unicorn. I must say the bread was very very good and the sandwich itself was very good, it just wasn't the best in Tampa. As far as being fresh, tasty, well made and filling it certainly met the bill. After seeing the breakfast menu the next time I'm over that way at breakfast time I will certainly stop in and join them for breakfast. I also would stop in again for lunch and try some of the other offerings that they have that looked so very enticing. Gotta love these independence and their love of their food and they always seem to take exceptional care of their customers. What's a girl to do? The quest for the perfect Cuban and unicorns continues.

I wanted Calabrian chiles, but they were apparently behind the plastic construction area. At the deli, I asked for a half pound prosciutto. They cut over 1lb due to lack of English. OK. I took it anyway so it was not wasted (the domestic was no bueno). It was old and dried out. There was no one at the meat counter, so I had to ask the deli guy to help me. The chicken breasts that were on sale were gatgantuan. I have never seen chicken breasts so large. The wings smelled bad when I got home to package to freeze. I had to toss 10 lbs. The reason I went was for the chicken sale. I am not risking food poisoning. The prices on most grocery items were actually higher than Publix. For specialty Italian items, the selection was just good. I did find guanciale and pancetta. Honestly, I would rather go to Mazzaro's or Moschella's. Their service is much better, and they have much more specialty items, plus they are cleaner and don't sell old nasty food.

Yes, there is tons of food made in the US too but it's a good variety. You won't find everything that you find at a standard grocery store here. Off the top of my head I couldn't find Greek yogurt, cottage cheese or nut butter, but what you do find is spectacular. We got pasta and pasta sauce imported from Italy, frozen ravioli from New York, coffee beans from Italy, bread from local bakeries, and my husband loved the coke from Mexico with real sugar. We also grabbed cannolis from their deli. They have a substantial wine and butcher area. Also a a good selection of ready made foods. This place is hidden, but the parking lot is big. I will definitely continue to come here to shop!

I'm glad I did and stopped overlooking it sooner, because these subs are good. It may not be in the most desirable area in town, but the store was remarkably clean and the employees were very friendly. They even allowed me to bring my sweet baby Muffin (shih tzu) inside while in her carriage. It's my first time in any Firehouse Subs, so I wasn't entirely sure what I would like. I went with The Engineer because the calorie count (conveniently plastered along the menu) was right where I wanted it, and I love most turkey subs in general. Plus, I thought the addition of mushrooms was pretty unique. I got the pickle on the side and a confetti cookie that I will eat later. (I'll let you know how it is--but anything with sprinkles will be a winner). I was pretty impressed with the quality of the sub. The meat was hot and tender, mixing well with the cheese, and the mushrooms did give it a good unique taste and texture profile like I knew it would. Meanwhile, the veggies in the sub were cool and crisp, making the whole sandwich a satisfying yet refreshing meal. I like how they ask if I would like to round up for the firemen. I realize Firehouse Subs were founded by firemen and they give back, so I said, "Why not?" since it's only rounding out to the nearest dollar. Although I think The Engineer will be my favorite and my usual to get, I'll be sure to try others on my repeat trips.

My plate was full with the burger itself, fries, and separately the usual burger toppings. With the onion rings and the bacon strips, I decided to not try to assemble with the toppings but just include those as I ate.
