The service was soooooo slow and I couldn't understand why there was only one woman working. It took us forever to get our drinks. Our appetizer was the only thing we ordered that we really enjoyed. (Beef carpaccio) For a steakhouse, you would think that they would order better cuts of meat. We ordered filet but mine was overdone as I asked for medium rare. My husband couldn't finish his because he said it was too chewy. We both got bake potatoes but they tasted like they were microwaved. Pendant qu'elle mangeait, ma copine pensait avoir croqué dans un morceau de steak un peu dur. Elle a mordu dessus plusieurs fois avant de le retirer de sa bouche avec ses doigts sans savoir c'était quoi. Elle a examiné le morceau dans sa main, réalisé que c'était un ÉNORME morceau de VERRE CASSÉ, puis m'a regardé et a dit : " Oh mon Dieu, je viens de croquer de la vitre. " Elle l'a ensuite déposé dans un petit contenant à mayonnaise qui restait sur la table. Heureusement, ses Invisalign ont agi comme une sorte de protège-dents, évitant qu'elle ne s'écaille une dent ou qu'elle n'avale le morceau de verre. Toutefois, le verre a endommagé ses Invisalign. Nous avions de belles places, une serveuse formidable et une ambiance agréable. Nous avions commencé avec des entrées, bu uniquement de l'eau, et commandé des plats de steak. L'incident s'est produit alors que nous étions encore en train de manger. Intérieurement, j'étais furieux, mais j'ai gardé mon calme, suis resté poli et j'ai évité de faire une scène pour ne pas perturber les autres clients. Je me suis levé et j'ai trouvé l'hôtesse, qui a fait venir notre serveuse. Nous lui avons montré le morceau de verre, et elle a manifesté une réelle inquiétude et un peu de panique. Elle est partie et est revenue avec une autre femme, qui s'est avérée être la gérante. Cependant, la gérante n'a PAS pris la peine de se présenter, de montrer une quelconque inquiétude, ni même de reconnaître la gravité de la situation pour ma copine. Au lieu de cela, elle est immédiatement tombée dans le déni, refusant d'admettre qu'il s'agissait de verre. (C'en était!!!) Elle a suggéré que " c'était peut-être des débris provenant de fissures dans le distributeur de mayonnaise, qui n'aurait pas été correctement nettoyé ". C'est tout ce qu'elle a dit. Aucune excuse, aucune reconnaissance de la gravité de l'incident. Puis, elle est partie... et n'est jamais revenue. J'ai appris plus tard que la gérante s'appelait Nadine. (Nous connaissons également le nom de la serveuse, mais nous le garderons pour nous dans ce post.) La serveuse est revenue avec un petit contenant de mayonnaise. À ce moment-là, j'ai compris à quoi m'attendre pour le reste de la soirée. Nos repas étaient complètement gâchés--nous n'avons évidemment pas continué. Pourtant, ils voulaient toujours nous faire payer l'intégralité de la facture. Cela a mené à une négociation entre moi et la serveuse. Pour vous donner un peu de contexte, c'était notre première visite à ce restaurant. Nous aimons le steak, c'est notre plat préféré, et nous voulions passer une soirée agréable en dégustant un bon repas sans avoir à cuisiner ou préparer quoi que ce soit. Le prix n'était pas un problème; nous voulions juste vivre une belle expérience. Malheureusement, cette expérience était loin de cela. Même si nous aimons partager nos expériences positives, cette fois-ci, il nous semblait nécessaire de raconter ce qui s'est passé. Les gens doivent être tenus responsables. La gérante? Why 2 stars? It's for the service and Ambiance. The place is very warm and romantic, great for dates .Now, the food. The Caesar salad was good as well as the desserts. These are the only food we enjoyed, I kid you not. Unfortunately, the 8 oz filet mignon and my 14 oz bone-in rib eye was tasteless .I love steakhouses but this one definitely missed the mark. The cut of the meat was terrible , both steaks. I ate 2 oz out of the 14 oz serving. Enough said. It was a total disappointment. Charbon needs more fire to be a good steakhouse. 1 star because it's a convenient option if you're taking the Via Rail train. Second star because the steak was good. But, we were refused the only table left because the hostess decided that my French wasn't good enough (without conversing in French with me, so I have to assume it's because we are visible minorities). We were seated at the bar instead because we were told the bartenders spoke English. Despite speaking English, the server got the order wrong for the salad and the 32 ounce steak for 2 was a 16 oz T bone. The service was not attentive, bartenders were mixing drinks constantly. This restaurant is racist and service is subpar, and overall overpriced. There are many many more food options 20 min away in the old town. I do not recommend. read more

So without discrediting the other reviewers here I have to say Le Charbon is and has been for over many years a good Steakhouse for Quebec City standards. You can't compare it with a steakhouse in Montreal or any other major city in North America but for Quebec City it's good in fact I would say very good for the price. My experience has always been pleasurable. The table linen a must with a nice decor, the service , their selection of wine and meat cuts all above grade quality. The only thing that has always bothered me a bit over the years is the owner has a habit of sitting at the bar having a bite during a rush while his staff is running around like chicken without heads. Definitely consider making a stop when you visit the beautiful Capital of Quebec. Fun fact. Park your car in the garage and they will validate it. read more

This is a world class steakhouse. The setting, the food, the service are awesome. It is also warm and comfortable with an array of different people in dress and style. The establishment welcomes all and feeds them spectacularly. The dry aged beef is tasty on it's own but if you want a shade more flavor the dipping gravy is there to accentuate the flavor. This review is mostly about my lunch experience. Great service, but my burger wasn't good. The patty was 1/3 smaller than the bun, the meat was overcooked to the point where there were no juices left, and there was no basic seasoning in the meat at all. I came to this place at the recommendation of my Airbnb host when I was in Quebec visiting last March. At first I was very impressed with the restaurant. The atmosphere is super funky and trendy, the wait staff are all very friendly and attentive, and the seating and plating arrangements are perfect. This place is not super trendy nor super classy, However this is not a place that you're going to be wearing sweatpants to dinner. Food: The food was amazing! This is why I came here. I wanted to take myself out for a fancy dinner before I went back to the states. Everything about the food was superb, the service at the bar was awesome. The drinks were fantastic. The only thing that took away from my experience were the group of four or five American gentleman who were openly ogling every single woman in the bar. They were seated to my right, and I could hear every single thing that they said, including their assessment of me. "She needs to lose about 30 pounds but I'd ___ her." It was enough to make my stomach turn. I immediately felt the need to cut my night short. Service: I pulled aside the bartender and told him what was going on because they were literally talking rudely about every single woman in the bar including one of the female bartenders as well and he said "yeah that's why she's working on the other side of the bar." This is the type of situation where you cannot just let people like this take over your bar. What should've happened was this bartender should've gone to the manager and told them that these men were being disruptive. But that did not happen. So, I chose to leave. Fortunately the bartender took pity on me and gave me free dessert, which was a very very good cheesecake. Did it make up for the crass men who ruined my experience? NO. Thought this would be a tourist trap, but I was wrong. It was delicious. High quality meat cooked on a charcoal grill. I've come here several times and it's only for one reason; their steaks!!! I have never had a bad experience with the cooking of their steaks, the sizes or even their service. They're always on point! I usually order the 8oz fillet mignon and after every visit I swear that next time i'm ordering the smallest size. If you're getting appies, plan to be satisfied, and full by the time your main meal arrives. The only reason I'm taking away a star is because i was extremely disappointed by the appetizer I ordered last time, the tomato salad with pita bread wedges. The tomatoes were soggy and seemed like they were prepared too far in advance (probably mixed the dressing early in the afternoon in anticipation for faster service). The pita wedges were SO stale! And they were deep fried! Yikes! I find that their patio/terrasse is badly/barely decorated and considering the strong decor of the interior plus the location of the restaurant, they could have definitely invested a bit more on the outside. Other than those two points, I'm a fan and will definitely keep coming back! read more

With a prior reservation of 5 PM, the four of us showed up a few minutes early and were asked to wait, so we waited at a table outside. We asked to order drinks, but no one showed up until we were being taken inside. When we were finally seated closer to 5:30, the hostess informed us we had to leave by 7:30. I've never had a timer put on any dining experience; a good restaurant will ensure that the second seating time allows the first seating ample time for dinner. Not at Charbon! At $45 for a table d'hote 3-course steak dinner, my expectation was for a superb meal. Our fiends ordered the table d'hote, we ordered a la carte. The first course was quite nice, but not spectacular. However, when I asked for the sommelier (being a former award-winning sommelier, I was sure that I could easily describe the wine I was looking for), up stepped a young man who immediately reassured me how great and special he was. I described that I wanted a specific region, described the taste and feel of the wine I wanted, then had to experience an upsell which did NOT deliver as promised. The wine wasn't bad, just not what I had described. STRIKE ONE! Then the main course arrived. My wife had wanted a small steak; we were reassured that the Boston Cut was top sirloin. What arrived looked, tasted, and had the shape of an end corner of tri-tip. STRIKE TWO! I had ordered the Osso Bucco. It looked OK, but had been held in a cooler, then rewarmed. The meat next to the bone was still very cool and the marrow was tepid. STRIKE THREE! BTW, the waiter had his heart in it, but definitely lacked the training necessary for a fine dining experience. Because we had a timer on the table and because we were taking some friends out to thank them for their courtesies, I did not send the food back. But I promise this: I would rather spend the rest of my life in prison than give this restaurant another penny of my money. There are many better restaurants for the same price in Quebec City; do yourself a favor and STEER FAR AWAY from Charbon. read more

Our restaurant experience here was tremendous, made possible by a very cool (or rather, heat-inferno-inspired) environment, an outstanding waitress, and well-prepared, delicious food. The waitress brought us a tray with the various types of steaks they grill and a mini-course in the differences between, for example, a New York cut and a Boston cut. She was attentive, friendly, engaging, and pleasant, and was able to answer any question we had and made the evening extraordinary. It's a little pricey but meets my expectations in the 'value equation'. One tip: the non-descript parking garage is to the left of the front door. This is the place to have an authentic steakhouse experience in Quebec City. Red leather banquettes, professional service, open kitchen, etc. I've dined there two times and the steaks were always perfectly cooked over maple charcoal and were terrific, but too expensive for me. In a restaurant, I prefer to pay that much for something else than steaks. They do sell them to go so I prefer to buy it and grill it at home. For those who usually like their steak medium-well, tell your waiter as they tend to cook it a little less than average. I like it rare so it's not a problem for me. read more

The food and ambience were really pleasant. We were on vacation and experiencing the steak house which we went after read some online reviews. However despite the food been good, the service was really bad. We went there for lunch on 04/28/15, and our server were extremely impatient and sort of passive aggressive barely explained couple questions we had at the menu and in a hurry storm the utensils from the table without had paying any attention to what I ordered. I had to call her back and repeat my order, by the time she presented the check after a horrible service, she was eager in add the gratuity, which by good manners and because of the rest of the staff I would definitely had tipped like a New Yorker 20%. So horrible hospitality! But good food and ambience. I wouldn't recommend if you are spending a vacation in there and want to feel welcomed and enjoying your time in a restaurant. read more

The hostess kindly squeezed us in on Christmas night. I had the steak medallion and my hubby had the prime rib. Both dishes were cooked perfectly. The table d'hote was a great value. I would be paying twice as much for a comparable meal in NYC. The complimentary pickles, coleslaw and bread was a nice way to open up your appetite. Before I review I want to give a brief explanation of my system. I award "Swansons" rather than stars when it comes to steak, in honor of the ultimate steak lover Ron Swanson: Nick Offerman's character on "Parks and Recreation." I do not consider for review anything that does not claim the title "steakhouse," as anything else is just a restaurant. Okay, a "chop house" qualifies too, as the emphasis is meat. Steak: 1 Swansons (I had the 20 oz Rib Steak, medium rare). I cried and I laughed and just about got a woody. It was cooked with fire and iron grates. Atmosphere: 1 Swanson (it's in a remodeled train station. It's got steel girders and horns and lots of wood and brick and you can see the steaks in the meat case). Value: 1 Swanson (I had a good beer and Apple Tart and coffee and got out at $60) Service: 1 Swanson (waitress was very nice and allowed me to practice my French and switched to English when I got stuck). Overall, a great place. You will not be disappointed if you go here when visiting Quebec City. Oh, and why not five Swansons? I was recommended this place by a friend from Quebec City and decided to give it a try when I actually went there. The place is right next to the train station, minutes away from the old town in a beautiful building (actually it is the same building as the train station, which speaks to how classy Quebec City is). Because it was a Monday night there was no crowd. Arrived 30 minutes before our reservation time but they accommodated me right away. Nice decor, dimmed lights which give it a romantic intimate feel, but lit enough to see what's happening and not feel like in an underground lounge. The place is on the expensive side, but nothing unexpected from a higher level steakhouse. The recommendation is to have the Table D'hote (basically choose a main and for an additional $5-$15 you get an appetizer, dessert and coffee - which is fully worth it). The Table D'hote for the NY Striploin is only $5 extra. So had the escargots, NY strip as main and maple creme brulee for dessert. Nice pinot noir to top it off. The steak was amazing. Arguably the best steak I had in Canada (better than the likes of Ruth Chris or even Moishe's) - only eclipsed by the steak I had in Chicago. The escargots were delicious as entree and also the pickle and coleslaw that are flowing endlessly (a Quebec staple that you don't get anywhere else - worth it!) Lovely experience - lovely location and city. For two people, the table d'hote and half of litre of wine cost around $160 including tip and tax. A bit pricey but totally worth it for a full meal and an awesome steak! read more

Very disappointing! Ordered 6 oz filet mignon medium, it came out rare. Sent back and it came back 10 minutes later as a new 4 oz steak with wrong sauce and missing steak knife. Took 10 minutes to get waitress to bring out correct sauce. Never got steak knife back. This was supposed to be the best steak place in Quebec but it was pretty mediocre. We had the misfortune to show at 6p.m. Without a reservation We're told we could sit outside but had to leave table at 7:30. That should have been a clue as to the service or lack of. After about 5 minutes and at lot of confusion by staff we were offered a table. Someone brought menus and out the clear blue a drink was placed in the middle of our table?? A waitress filled our water glasses and left. After another 10 minutes a waitress started taking an order from a couple that came in after us. It was time to go somewhere else. After walking about a block some middle eastern man came up behind us demanding that we pay for the drink we ordered. Told him we left because of poor service and that we did not drink. We did not order drink and had no idea what it was. He said we were trying to leave without paying. Menus and drink menu were still on table. I think the drink was for someone else! Being something of a steak tourist, I didn't know what to expect when visiting Quebec. The concierge at Auberge St. Antoine recommended Charbon, and I couldn't be happier. There was a heavy downpour of snow and I wound up walking about a mile in sub-freezing temperatures, but I'd do it again in an instant. The location and decor are great, as is the service. The meat is action-packed, and the wine list is nothing to sneeze at either. Not exactly inexpensive, but this isn't Burger King, and you get what you pay for. I'm looking forward to going back to Quebec and Charbon is at the top of my to-do list. read more
