    Pit turkey sandwich with provolone
    Anna S.

I love a good hole-in-the-wall. We were traveling up to PA from Baltimore and needed a quick bite. We happened to be passing through this area and I was craving BBQ and sandwiches. This place is tucked away off the highway right by a go-carting track. The bright yellow tent is a perfect landmark so you don't miss the turn! We ordered the pit turkey sandwich with provolone cheese, the belly buster sandwich, both with fries and drinks. It came out to about $30. I got the pit turkey sandwich and I must say that it has to be one of my favorites by far. They really loaded on the meat and it was perfectly cooked so some of the ends were a bit crispy but it still retained it's juicy flavor. It could've used a little bit of mayo but other than that it was finger-licking gooood. The fries were just OK, a bit oily, but we did like the seasoning on top. I would 1000% return to Charcoal Style for that pit turkey sandwich - my mouth is watering just thinking about it right now. I might skip the fries and the drink next time, but the sandwich alone is worth the drive out of the city!

This place is spot on! Cannot go wrong with the menu items. Made fresh daily and delicious! Opened during the 2020 endemic but no changes other than safety requirements per govt regulations. This place is always consistent! ProTip; they do catering items and will please all The needs!

So I seek out pit beef places, searching for the best. I think my quest is over. Two pit sandwiches (beef, turkey or ham), two fries and two sodas for $15.99? You betcha! Onions, horseradish, mayo, and pickles for topping your choice? Yeppers! Old Bay and vinegar for the fries? Check! (Love that the vinegar was provided in a spray bottle). They have two choices of BBQ sauce as well. Open Pit and Cannonball. Always go for the Cannonball! A few picnic tables are provided and most are under cover. If pit beef is not your style, they have several other items on the menu. And the fries are awesome. I can't believe more people aren't talking about this joint.. It sits on Route 40 and shares a parking area with a go-kart track and a sno-cone shack. Bring the kiddies, have a sandwich and a few turns on the track, then finish it off with a sno-cone! Perfect family outing! I just wish I lived closer.

Ordered a margarita that was tasty. Also ordered a capri martini (think lemon) that was subpar. Manhattan was ordered and was very good. Lots of drink options and lots of beet on tap. Ordered a flatbread pizza that was good and the pesto chicken sandwich (no bun) that was delicious! Sandwich was served with house made chips that were worth fighting over. Tons of specials. Just a terrific place to perch. Will be back. They even have Keno!

I popped in to The Local with one of my friends for a much needed happy hour and we were both in consensus we had to come back to try some other menu items and specials. $7 for the house Sangria and a mule of the day, was a great start to the evening and quite tasty. We both dined on the burger and fries and enjoyed the dish. I would've like a bit of seasoning on the burger patties and maybe a cheddar or American cheese, but that's my personal preference. I asked for the black truffle aioli on the side and that was definitely the way to go to really be able to taste the black truffle. And might I say the aioli was delicious. Our waitress was great and very attentive. The Local offers different specials on various nights and even does live music on Friday nights. On the plus side my family enjoyed the ribs and crab balls. On the negative side, the fish in my fish and chips was painfully thin and small. Normally you get a nice chunky piece of fish when you get fish and chips. Not only that, l've never had fish and chips where the skin was on the fish. I left most of the skin behind, but ate some of it because the portion was so small. I had to eat something. Please have the chef look up what fish and chips is supposed to look like. Despite being the only server, our wait person was outstanding - it wasn't their fault that they had to handle the entire dining room. . Also appreciated the carafe of water on the table - but why no ice -had to drink lukewarm water. Make sure to ask for prices upfront and verify-for a single crabcake entrée, we paid $63 when it's advertised online as 30. Let the buyer beware.. Wouldn't feel a need to return at this point, too many other better options.

They have one pool table where APA league members usually play, a shuffle board, and a number of TVs for sports games (although they are not HD). I could tell this was a local go-to for many of the customers at this bar especially since they all seemed to know each other. Our bartender was very friendly with helping us decide what to order. We got the Belly Buster Fried Fish sub ($8.99), with a side of fries (an extra $2) and Italian Cold Cut ($9.50), with a side of chips (free), along with a Loose Cannon ($5.00) & Grapefruit Crush ($6.00). The subs were pretty good. The fried cod (I believe it was) was nice and crispy and the tartar sauce paired perfectly to cut the richness of the grease. The portion was definitely money's worth. The cold cuts in my sub were fresh. There was enough acid to not make the bread soggy. The grapefruit crush was very icy. I noticed the bartender made it by blending a grapefruit fruit cup with ice and some grapefruit-vodka. When I was done with my first drink, she poured the rest of the mixture from the blender into my glass, which I thought was very nice. The Chicken Parmesan sandwich I had last night was on point and my girlfriend had a very good chicken quesadilla as well. Prices are pretty reasonable. My only beef is with the service. The bar is a little "cliquey" from several observations. The regulars seem to get waited on immediately and a newcomer gets a "I'll be right with you". No placemats, no silverware, no napkins seems to be the norm. Had to ask for ketchup when my fries came out after getting chips by mistake. We will most likely go back though, especially since The Bird River Inn changed their whole menu and did away with most of our favorite menu items. Everything is smoked now and very salty. If you're looking for ambience, you may want to try somewhere else. The Dugout is a hole in the wall dive bar and has been for decades...just the way the regulars like it!
