Definitely my favorite pit beef sandwich spot in Maryland. Came here on a recommendation from a friend and I'm glad it did. It doesn't look like much just like a shack on the side of the road but the food here was delicious. Plenty of parking and right next to a go kart spot. Walk up window with a small outdoor space to sit and eat. Menu is the basics of pit beef and other bbq meats you'd expect. The prices here are very reasonable and the portions are solid. The service here was friendly and welcoming. Ordering was simple enough. I got a turkey and pit beef sandwich and it was soo amazing. The pit beef was juicy and not dry at all, the turkey also well seasoned and juicy. Sandwich was a good size and filled me up. Will definitely be back when I have a pit beef craving and highly recommend especially over that other place down the road . read more

This place deserves at least 10+ stars! After looking at the local Yelp Collection, I said, "Hey," this 1 is nearby, let's go, and so we did. They have a steady flow of customers, many regulars, and of course passersby who see the cars in the lot. Many parked cars mean good food, and this turned out to be a treat. Go up the steps and see the basic menu clearly posted with prices, order at the screened window. Cash discount, but they do take cards and offer a military discount. The orders are prepared as given, and all is fresh. My husband wanted the 2 sausage sub...10", green peppers, and fried onions. It was slightly spicy-Italian sausage. This was the combo for about $15, which comes with fresh cut fries and a soft drink. They were kind enough to give a free refill of Pepsi products. He loved it and half came home. Oops, they forgot the fries, so I went back, and they made them up. I got the Pit beef, rare, raw onions, and horseradish on the side in a little cup. Huge and delicious. I melted into pit beef lala land. Then the daydream began, we ate at a picnic table out front, devouring the fries and watching the busy world go by. Time paused for us. I love a good hole-in-the-wall. We were traveling up to PA from Baltimore and needed a quick bite. We happened to be passing through this area and I was craving BBQ and sandwiches. This place is tucked away off the highway right by a go-carting track. The bright yellow tent is a perfect landmark so you don't miss the turn! We ordered the pit turkey sandwich with provolone cheese, the belly buster sandwich, both with fries and drinks. It came out to about $30. I got the pit turkey sandwich and I must say that it has to be one of my favorites by far. They really loaded on the meat and it was perfectly cooked so some of the ends were a bit crispy but it still retained it's juicy flavor. It could've used a little bit of mayo but other than that it was finger-licking gooood. The fries were just OK, a bit oily, but we did like the seasoning on top. I would 1000% return to Charcoal Style for that pit turkey sandwich - my mouth is watering just thinking about it right now. I might skip the fries and the drink next time, but the sandwich alone is worth the drive out of the city! read more

What a hole in the wall kind of place - it's in the same lot as a go-kart track and you'd completely miss it otherwise. Super tiny menu, but the food's solid. It's slightly cheaper to pay by cash too, so heads up if you got it. The Mega Threat is overkill but of course I got that first. They do slice to order and throw it on the grill so no worries there. Fries are fresh - you get a lot but it was a little salty. I got my sandwich with onions and horseradish, and for some reason all my horseradish was shoved in a singular corner vs the top bread, so every now and then my bite was pure pain LOL. The meats are definitely well seasoned and I like their sausage. Pit beef itself was okay - it's well seasoned but it was tougher than Chap's medium well. This ain't my favorite pit beef bite, but it's significantly closer to my work and will be good in a pinch. read more

I used to order pit beef from there all the time. All of a sudden it had gristle continually. Then they started making mistakes on my order. So I stopped ordering pit thief. But today I ordered a pizza from somewhere and wanted their lemonade. My pizza is cold because The driver was waiting 15 minutes because they didn't even make the lemonade yet. So I had never even heard of pit beef before moving to Maryland. In Ohio, we have bull roasts lol. But my introduction to pit beef was, of course, Chaps. Many moons ago. Ever since my first time there, I have had pit beef at many places and nothing compared. But who wants to drive all the way down to the city or up to Aberdeen for great pit beef? Enter Charcoal Style. A friend that lives nearby told me about this place and I decided to give it a shot. This pit beef is spot on. Perfectly cooked, great seasoning, nice charcoal flavor. This place has been around a long time and tbh the food varies but this time it was spot on. I got the Bull Dog which is pit beef with sausage. Huge sub , not cheap but legitimately 2 servings. Fries were also huge. Would like if they offered a small fries for a bit less as they are expensive. My combo was pennies under $20 with the "service fee". Service fees are a joke and an insult to customers. Credit card fees have been around forever and all the sudden the vendor needs to add on a fee ? Sorry. I love this place. The people here are so friendly and helpful to old guys like me. Their prices are fair and service is top notch. The other weekend I was up in Baltimore. Took my best friend to Chaps Pit Beef. While sitting there, another customer sat down next to us and was talking about how much I love Chaps and he told me about Charcoal Style a few miles up from Chaps that was way better. I thought about driving up there after leaving Chaps and ordering one, even though I was not really hungry because I live over an hour away. But I ended up going somewhere else with my friend. I drove up Saturday. As I got 3 miles away, I realized I forgot my wallet at home! I thought I made the trip for nothing. Checked their website to see if they took ApplePay and no info on website, and no mention of Apple Pay on the yelp info. Bu thankfully I have Wells Fargo for my bank and I can access ATM without my card. So cash in hand I walk up to the window to order, and first thing I saw, they do take Apple Pay. So I have made request for Yelp to update this on the info. So I ordered the Pit beef, fries and drink combo. First thing I noticed it how long it took them to prepare orders. Beef is cooked, Fries usually are cooked, not always, but not trying to be critical but I got my order. First thing, when I ordered, as others have said about Chaps, this place does not ask you how you want your beef prepared. I am more a rare - Mid-rare type person. I got my sandwich and just as I feared it was well down. I have ordered sandwiches at Chaps before and they ended up well done by mistake but where Chaps is better, even though this is called charcoal style, the beef did not have any char on it as it does at Chaps, because chaps places the shaved beef over an open fire to give it a char and heat it some. The beef did have a slight charcoal flavor but nothing like chaps. Beef quality wise. I think the quality of the beef it a bit better at Charcoal style, but the flavor was flat, bland and not that enjoyable. When I get beef sandwiches I Ike to eat them as is, nothing on them, well with the exception of horseradish sauce sometimes for a kick. Good Beef, cooked well, and well seasoned, no need for anything to hide or mask the flavor. Well I wish I got horseradish sauce for this. The fries, they were fresh cut and ok. Good seasoning. I liked the thick cut but fries like this need to be par cooked then fried to give them a crisp and more flavor. For the drive, the time and excitement of trying, I was really disappointed. I was thinking 2 stars but giving the benefit of the doubt I will give 3 stars. Will I come back again to try again, sure. May see if I can find out if they serves there sandwiches a little less well done. read more

So I seek out pit beef places, searching for the best. I think my quest is over. Two pit sandwiches (beef, turkey or ham), two fries and two sodas for $15.99? You betcha! Onions, horseradish, mayo, and pickles for topping your choice? Yeppers! Old Bay and vinegar for the fries? Check! (Love that the vinegar was provided in a spray bottle). They have two choices of BBQ sauce as well. Open Pit and Cannonball. Always go for the Cannonball! A few picnic tables are provided and most are under cover. If pit beef is not your style, they have several other items on the menu. And the fries are awesome. I can't believe more people aren't talking about this joint.. It sits on Route 40 and shares a parking area with a go-kart track and a sno-cone shack. Bring the kiddies, have a sandwich and a few turns on the track, then finish it off with a sno-cone! Pit Beef!!! One of the best pit beef sandwiches I've had in the Baltimore area. Much better than some other places on rt. 40 that receive way too much notoriety for some below average beef. This sandwich was overstuffed with rare, medium, and some well done beef. All bites were juicy and tender and offered some great seasoned flavor in addition to the charcoal smokiness. My daughter had a cross country meet out this way so I looked for a spot in the area on TVFOODMAPS and came up with Charcoal Style. For reference we've also had Chaps Pit Beef and are somewhat regulars at Canopy Pit Beef. I got a pit beef (medium-rare) with onions and tiger sauce with a side of fries and coleslaw. The sandwich was flavorful, but in need of salt and pepper which I am fine putting on myself. I also like good coleslaw on my sandwiches and this was a good creamy coleslaw. The fries were fresh hand cut fries but could have either been fried longer or better yet fried a second time. (I'm a huge 5 Guys and Canopy fries guy). I believe they were just pulled out of the fryer a few seconds too early. If I'm back this way I'll definitely stop by again. read more

Had 2 pit beef sandwich and a triple-meat (turkey, ham, roast beef) sub. All were great. All had an absurd amount of meat and 1/2 the sub is saved for another meal. I had never been to this pit beef place before despite it being not far from my parents' house. It was featured in the Washington Post so I thought I'd better check it out. I normally think of pit beef as a summer food but they are open all year round! The fries were what I think of as "beach style" and already had Old Bay on them which is great for me. They also had communal malt vinegar. The sandwiches were big and the meat was tender. They did not have tiger sauce which I thought was odd so we made do with plain horseradish. It is much cheaper to get a deal (I think it was $20 for 2 drinks, 2 sandwiches, and 2 sides) than to buy ala carte. We were taking it home and didn't really need a drink but we ended up with one because it was the cheaper option. It's a Pepsi place, FYI so we got root beer.
