I am so disappointed in this bakery! I have been there so many times and have ordered many cakes. This time I ordered a 1/4 sheet "My singing monster" for my son's 4th birthday. When I got an estimate and description of the cake it all sounded great. I was told there would be "monsters" on the cake and they would be edible, some trees and what not. The cake was $88.00. When I got there, the cake looked nothing like I was picturing from the conversation and it was very underwhelming, it had the logo on top, and ONE monster on the side and trees and greenery. The trees and greenery was fine but literally ONE monster on the side. I just did not expect to pay $88 for one monster. I am not one to discredit anyone's art but this was really ridiculous. . I addressed the girl at the front and she told me that they could add some sprinkles, a couple of monsters and that I would need to be charged 23 dollars AND I would have to come by several hours later to get the cake, I declined because it was the day of my sons party and his party was in just a couple of hours. This was a very sad experience and probably would not purchase a cake here again. Attached is the cake. Once I got home I added sprinkles of my own and a couple of picks to living it up. Only other change was buttercream icing on the cupcakes, this was an additional 38.50. Toral was $114.50 Received a plain vanilla cake with buttercream icing and the 6 cupcakes. Called and was hung up on twice, called next day and they did not take ANY responsibility and only quoted a 2.00 up charge for the lemon curd. Amazing service and their skill in creation is outstanding. I ordered a special made cake for my husbands military retirement and showed them a simple picture of one I found online. They created an EVEN BETTER version of it. And it was a show stopper. You'd like to believe my husband was the star of his party- but honestly the cake was. Everyone was floored over the artistry. We felt terrible cutting it. Until we tasted it. The cake was light, moist and delicious. I kept going back and forth on if I should post this but I am honestly still really irritated. I went to Charles Street bakery to place a cake order 3 days after they made my beautiful delicious red velvet cake (the purple one). I told them that I want it exactly like the previous cake that I had gotten (size wise) but this time I want carrot cake. The same person that took both cake orders responded by saying ok so 6in 3 layers then? And I said yes. Because I wanted a tall cake like the previous one, so we both had an understanding. I go pick up the cake yesterday and I see that the cake is not tall at all from the glass fridge. I tell the cashier who was the one that took my order that I ordered a 3 layer cake and that my cake was supposed to be taller, which she agreed. She tells them in the back that it was supposed to be a 3 layer cake and they tell her that is a 3 layer cake. When I tell you I was so blown away that that was a 3 layer cake... like I was so confused. The cashier brought me "manager". Kathy (manager) proceeded to tell me that carrot cakes are thinner than other cakes and reassured me that it is 3 layers. I told her that I specifically told the person who took my order that I wanted the cake to be as tall as my last one so that's why she put down 3 layers on the order sheet. I'm very annoyed because this second cake (black) was much more expensive than the first cake (purple). I honestly wasn't going to take the cake but they have a contract that you only get 50% back. I was not going to let them keep $45 which I honestly think should have been the price of that cake. Katie the "manager" pretty much blames it on still having to staff and gave me her number so that I can place my order through her next time so there would not be any confusion. Katie said that next time say you want 4 layers when ordering a carrot cake, i don't believe 4 layers would have been enough for that height, i thinking 6 layers. To make things worse the cake was extremely dry. Charles Street Bakery does make very beautiful cakes and can voucher for their red velvet cake because it was moist and delicious . I would advise you to think twice when ordering a carrot cake from them for a special event. read more

The pricing is fair, but it is the only really bakery in town. Call well in advance of any order as there is always a backlog of orders. Very cute items to make a charcuterie board!! Looks fresh and homemade/home grown! They have a bunch of stuff from cheese to me... Something I thought was very cool was a fake made salami... We were completely stuffed, but will have to go back and actually try out a few of these things. They also had a really nice bakery, which had a dolce de Leche Cheesecake along with different types of pasta so many good looking treats, and they have one of our favorite macaroons. I placed an order for custom cupcakes for my daughter's birthday a month in advance. I came in the day of her birthday, and they couldn't find my order. When they finally found the form, someone had scratched out the date and put the following weekend (different pen, different handwriting). They acknowledged that it was unprofessional and that one of their staff likely didn't want to make the cupcakes that day. They did recover by making them on the spot, but it took 90 minutes to get it all situated and I was late for all of the other errands I had to run that morning. I was blown away with the amount and variety of treats that this place has (and the prices are down right unbelievable - too reasonable to be true but the cash register don't lie. Their prices are very low and their products are amazing. I'm going back again and again - checks watch I may go back again now lol). Cashier with the glasses is rude and has horrible customer service. They messed up my daughter's cupcakes day of the birthday party. Drove an hour to and from to end up with cupcakes with Oreos on top. I was a frequent customer. The wedding cake was lovely, tasty and matched my vision. Communication, follow-up and attention to detail, however, leave quite a bit to be desired. A few examples: - After driving almost 2 hours to get to them, we waited quite a bit (about 15 min) for the tasting to start, and the process took a long time - we were there for almost two hours, for a discussion that shouldn't have taken more than 10-20 minutes tops (I had brought photos, I knew what I wanted and I didn't have a complicated order). They also did not have the flavors I had wanted for my cake available for tasting, so really, what was the point? I had mentioned these in both an email and their online form. They apologized and said it was very unprofessional, which I have to agree with. - At the tasting and over several phone conversations, I had to continuously correct information that had been recorded incorrectly on the order form by their staff. The girl who helped us at the tasting kept writing things down as we discussed them, but kept making corrections when I pointed out errors. They also had trouble understanding what was wrong about a point I later called to correct - the background noise in the store didn't help. I felt like I didn't have their full attention or interest. - They were unresponsive in communications. I almost never got replies back to emails, and had to follow up with phone calls for every question, such as when the rest of my balance would be due. At both the tasting and in later communications, they kept saying they had a large cupcake order to fulfill. Well, I'm sorry, if you can't be bothered with an almost $700 wedding cake, then why take that on at all? - A note about the location: the place is not conveniently located (i.e., close to any city), so you'll have to drive for a bit to reach them, and it's also quite crammed. They don't take customers to a different part of the store for tastings and consultations, so when we had ours, people were coming in and talking to the staff while we were sitting at a table trying to have a conversation with our consultant. At some point their distributor came in to deliver some eggs and started talking loudly with the owner or another staff member about chickens. Again, if I'm paying almost $700 for a cake, I deserve better. Adjust your prices or adjust your location and customer service. I'm not sure I'd chose them again, or I would delegate dealing with them to someone on my planning team. read more

The girls that work there are very sweet, but when I saw the cake I had ordered my heart completely fell. When I had ordered it I had asked for an ocean themed smash cake for my 1 year olds birthday, we even had talked about sea creatures other various ideas to be included. I think my biggest mistake was not finding a picture of a cake for them to replicate but I honestly was very open about what the cake looked like, just wanted it to be (1) cute and (2) beach themed. What I ended up getting was something that looked like an attempt at a pool party theme that was done haphazardly in 15 minutes. I was in hurry and just very upset when I picked it up that I didn't really know what to say and end not saying anything at the time, which I do regret. I would not recommend this bakery for cakes if you're looking for something moist. The cakes are pretty on the outside but way off on the inside. I've given this bakery several tries and each time the cakes have been very dry...strawberry shortcake was not good and also had a vanilla/strawberry cake..dry as well. The icing was off...hard to explain but not worth the price at all! Over priced and underwhelming taste. Going to just take an extra 15 minutes and drive to Walls Bakery from now on. I had an unfortunate experience with them, but I highly recommend them for anyone walking in off the street and purchasing any of their baked goods which are delicious. In my case, I ordered a birthday cake - red velvet with cream cheese frosting. I got red velvet with buttercream frosting and was highly disappointed so a neighbor came to my aid because she used to be a baker for Neiman Marcus and she baked me a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, and I gave her the cake from this bakery. They need to get the order correct because you're paying extra for a custom order and they couldn't get it right so they can't get five stars from me. But their baked goods are great, but also pricey. Their location can be found via GPS because it doesn't have a large presence from the street perspective. read more

I love this small bakery shop in the heart of La Plata, Md. They are reasonably priced and did a phenomenal job on my baby shower cake for my son last year. I placed an order at the Charles Street Bakery for a JFK wedding cake a month in advance. While they told me they were not familiar with it, they looked it up on-line and said they could make the cake. I was disappointed because it just wasn't very good and didn't seem fresh. This was not a good cake, and I'm not picky when it comes to cake. My kids who were here to taste it along with other friends, felt the same and bought me the JFK cake which is available on-line. It came from San Francisco packed in dry-ice. No comparison. The cake that came from 3000 miles away was much fresher, and was excellent. I can recommend that one. I called the CSB manager and told her my experience. I was not rude in any way. When I was done telling her, she didn't say anything. After a long awkward pause, I ask if she was there. She said she was waiting for me to finish. I was obviously finished and she knew it - it was very disrespectful. Then she began telling me how they did their best and hung up on me. The women that have attended me and my husband the times we have come have been very short and lack the basic skill of customer service.
