I was not in a big hurry so we worked around each other's schedule to set a date and time. I initially found Charles Tree Service on the internet through the San Diego Better Business Bureau. I then sent photos and a request for a bid to Charles via his company website and received a call back about an hour later. The job required cutting tree limbs away from two power lines and the roof of a house as well as a substantial thinning out of the tree branches. He and his crew showed up exactly on time, took all appropriate safety precautions, and were very careful not to damage fences or roofing material. Charles removed a large tree from my small back yard. It was in a corner, a foot from a cement wall and 1 1/2 feet from a 2 story building. The yard has lots of hardscape, several potted trees and many small pots and other items. He and his crew moved and replaced all movable items to ensure they were not damage. Now they have removed two very large trees from my property. As a repeat customer, I can only say this is a top-shelp crew. They show up on time, get the job done, and they do a great job cleaning up afterward. Their stump grinding is thorough, leaving it almost impossible to see where the tree used to be. (I've used other services where the stump grinding left evidence of the stump just below the ground level. Not only that, but they were very courteous to my neighbors. After getting stood up for a quote twice by a local El Cajon tree service -- which I had used in the past -- I decided to give Charles a try. It was midday when I called, and he was at a job in La Jolla and said he would swing by at the end of the day, which he did. Very honest and great work. We had spoke on the phone and I told him that I have LARGE ornamental pear tree which needs trimming/thinning/shaping. These trees are not normally very big at all so I think he still had something much smaller in mind (when quoting price) than my tree which is actually quite big (casts big shadow over entire front yard). When he got out to the site he stuck with the price he had quoted over the phone and when all was said and done he said- "Oh well- You got a good deal." This is how good business is done. I sent a message via Yelp at midnight and by the time I woke the next morning Charles the owner said he can be out that morning for a free quote. He showed up on time and saw what I had, a large century plant, about 25-30 foot tall in between a few important structures in my yard and he quoted a good price. He came back later with a crew and they took it down with such precision and cleaned it up nicely. They worked very hard and were polite. Charles came back as the crew was cleaning and he even though they did more than enough I had to stop them myself because I didn't want to take advantage of their persistence to please. They took the plant down and cleaned an area around it. I was basically pushing them out because I had to run and they wanted to make things so tidy it was great to see companies like this still exist. I called a company prior to his service, they came out and provided a quote for the trim, then separately for the stump removal. It was more than 2X Charles' end price. I spoke with him over the phone, talked about job details, he gave me a number, it was done the next day to 100% satisfaction. One price total, no over price and negotiate, just one simple decision-making price. I felt bad that the first offer was such a great deal that it was more than double fo what I actually paid. Let me start of by saying that my job is Service and Quality for 20 years now. I have no problem giving Charles Tree Service 5 stars. I always thoroughly researched any service and ask for referrals. I will read all the reviews on all sites, go to BBB etc. Its just what I do. I did read some reviews about response times, however that can be conditional sometimes, I know this. So I called to inquire about the work I wanted. Charles immediately answered the phone and was very courteous and nice. He just so happened to be in my neighborhood and was at my house in under 30 minutes. He called me on arrival and walked my yard. He was quick to give me a quote which I felt was extremely fair. He said if I were able to get back to him soon (Had to check with the wife) that he might be able to fit it in that day. What?! are you serious. Wife approved and I called back. Again, Charles immediately answered and said no problem, and that he would work on getting his crew over. Within an hour or less the crew showed up and took out two trees. Here is where this story gets better. After they removed the trees they ground the stumps. In doing so, they broke several lines in my irrigation. Charles and crew spent the rest of the day making sure it was perfect. I got home early and they were packing up. Place was spotless. he walked me to the back and showed me the work, seriously two big trees gone and nothing to evidence for it. I said I honestly have never seen this type of service and was really impressed. Charles gracious mentioned that he was aware of reviews where perhaps he was not responsive enough. Again being in the service/quality biz, I know that this can be conditional at times, but for a business owner to recognize this and ensure he has focus on it, is paramount. What a wonderful experience. I left email and phone messages requesting estimates/price quotes from nine companies that provided tree removal services for my area. Charles and his team responded to my request for a price quote on removing a tree (including the stump) in less than an hour. They provided the most reasonably price estimate, completed the work the same day and were completely professional. They were extremely efficient, friendly, courteous and took great pains to clean the area. I was also pleased that they took care not to damage any plants near and around the area where they were working. Two of the trunks on my multi-trunk palm fell over onto my neighbor's property and one of the trunks came to rest on their roof. Charles was on site looking at the job within a couple of hours after I called him, and he had his crew and equipment here 14 hours after that. Both trunks were neatly removed and all debris hauled away. He and his crew were skilled and professional, and made a terrible situation a pleasure to deal with. We hired Charles Tree Service to remove a fan palm, and prune a few other trees on our property in Vista. We were very happy with the end result! Charles and his partner were on-site throughout the job, and participated in the work themselves (so we did not experience the usual communication gap which we've had in the past with other tree service companies). While Charles was in the boom lift doing some of the pruning, his partner was helping to make sure the tree looked balanced, and would tell the workers if they missed particular branches. (They had good attention to detail, which was appreciated.) They also did a good job of cleaning up afterwards. We plan to get an estimate from them for some other work we need to have done, and would definitely recommend them to other Yelpers. read more

Charles tree service are AMAZING! Several coral tree branches fell on to the roof of my house (to much watering). I left an email with Charles requesting a estimate. Charles called me back the next day, showed up an hour later after the call and said I can remove the limps today. The price was excellent and I said yes. He and his crew where back in an 1-1/2 hours as promised, with a bucket truck, chipper and all the equipment to removed the limbs. He and his crew where friendly, professional and above all safe in removing the branch. Called him late Friday, he came by about 5 P M, gave us three estimates on amount of trees we choose to have work done on and how much we wanted them thinned. We choose the middle estimate and he offered to do it Saturday. Had one job early but would be to our place no later than 11 A M. . We cleared out side drive and main drive by 10 A M and Charles showed up at 11. Two largest trees were behind garage, well beyond any driveway or cement, but he got his truck in till it had no more clearance on either side, never hit a thing and was able to extend his boom basket past first tree he worked on to the liquid amber and did most of it from the basket. Other trees were easier to work on. Cleanup went well. Happy with results. read more

I called Charles Tree Service to help with a downed tree and I am so glad I did. The trees in our yard were mature and the rain from Hurricane Dolores was too much for some of the branches to handle. A very large branch that broke off was blocking my neighbors driveway so I asked them if they could come out and trim it up so it wouldn't be in the neighbors way. They had someone out on Sunday (less than 24 hours after I called) and had it cleaned up in less than 30 minutes. After looking at the tree, Forrest (the person who came to clean up the branch) noticed there were some deep cracks in tree that was still standing and the remaining branches were likely to fall. I had him inspect the other trees and he noted some concerns but said he thought they could be trimmed up if I wanted to keep them. By that point, I asked when they could come back to take out the trees (trees were very soft so even with cleanup, it was likely to happen again). Forrest left and was back within an hour. He brought a team and they ended up taking all 3 trees down and ground the stumps within 4 hours. It had started to rain again but they took their time getting everything removed and cleaned up. They were very knowledgeable and pointed out some concerns with the locations of the current trees when I said I wanted to replace them (planted too close to water and gas lines). Overall, I was very impressed with the work and the amount of effort they put in on a Sunday. Couldn't have asked for anything better. read more

These guys are great. The price was reasonable, communication excellent, and overall it was an excellent professional job. In anticipation of possible El Nino problems, we had the top half of a 60 foot eucalyptus removed as well as a silk oak and several other trees and overhanging branches on our largish property. We routinely need to have tree work done around here but this was the biggest project yet. I was particularly impressed with the way they were able to avoid damaging our numerous fruit trees and vines. Some of the drop areas were tiny!
