After taking my order, one of the many guys behind the counter dipped into the back for 15 minutes, which seemed like an exceptionally long time for a sandwich. I took my sandwich to eat at home. The sandwich was pressed and toasted as a Cuban should be, and it was filled with about half a pound of ham, no roast pork. In addition, there was so much mustard on the sandwich that it upset my stomach. Had I wanted a ham and cheese panini, I would have ordered one. If the person who took my order told me they were out of pork, I would have happily changed my order.

Sal's keeps the beacon of goodness and hope alive with their spectacular version. Purist want the BEC on a Kaiser roll, but I prefer mine on a bagel. Some will disparage the bagel choice because many are poorly made where the fillings tend to smoosh out the opposite side of where the eater is taking a bite. When it is done perfectly the bagel, cheese and eggs become one making a cohesive sandwich with the bacon firmly ensconced in that delicious creaminess where everything is just working magically together. The trick here is getting soft folded layers of eggs that are not over cooked. To me Sal's makes the quintessential version. On top of this great New York breakfast classic sandwich, the iced coffee is money as well. Although off the beaten subway path it is worth the bus ride, or more conveniently, car or even still you can risk a criminal summons hopping on a bike. To my horror i had been consuming an ungodly amount of mold with every bite of that horrible croissant. Only god knows how long it had been sitting out. Of course when I noticed this I went back to the deli to tell them. All they could do is give me my 4$ back and tell me to go to a doctor. Now where I messed up is giving them the croissant back instead of sending it off to the health department. Mind you I had a 14 hour flight a few days after this visit to LENNY'S. Horrific!
