Three of us went in for dinner and we had a bit of a wait but we got drinks at the bar and got to sit outside until our table was ready. Our waitress was very attentive although they were very busy. We ordered the crab legs and I got the grilled shrimp Alfredo. We shared a piece of the chocolate cake to finish our meal. The crab legs were delicious. Well a hidden little gem that reminded of old Florida fish house. Ashlee was our server and very helpful....made some good recommendations and we followed her lead. The cheese sticks for some reason were just a little better than usual. I opted for the fish sandwich which was a huge portion....should be a fish sandwich with a side of fish....fries were tasty and it was a good value as it was the Friday lunch special. The cheeseburger was pretty good too and a good portion. My Burger Expert gave it two thumbs up. Protip: The tables have a leg out near where you get in....some are not the same size....I whacked my knee and we changed tables to one a bit more engineered for larger humans.... These were big, juicy and the coconut batter perfection. Very flavorful. I ordered the grilled shrimp in scampi flavor with a side of fries. It came with coleslaw (it didn't say that on the menu- or I would have told them to keep it. I hate wasting food and neither of us eat coleslaw. My shrimp arrived and looked and tasted like someone had a garlic-parmesan blend for garlic knots smothering the skewers of shrimp. I wouldn't consider them grilled. The garlic was very overpowering and I was scraping it off to eat it. The fries were good- I ended up giving a bunch to John because there were so many on the plate. John ordered the fried haddock dinner with green beans- again, his dinner came with coleslaw, even though it didn't say that on the menu. Wasted food. His dinner was delicious- the fish fried lightly and perfectly. The flakey fish a delightful meal. He also got hushpuppies with his meal- which he promptly gave me one. I took a bite and handed it back to him (don't laugh)- it was so bland. I am the type of person that if I don't like something I am not wasting the calories- I just won't eat it. My meal was a miss, John's meal was great and the appetizer was great. I also was highly amused at the AYCE price tag on the crab- over $60! ORANGE CREAM CAKE This cake sent my mind reeling with a preposterous amount of seratonin. The flavor was comparable to that of Zeus' ambrosial nectar. I could almost feel the golden ichor filling my veins as I ascended to the peak of Olympus. The divine palate you have to have to graze this dessert with your tastebuds and not burst with adoration and amazement is incomprehensible. I could never detail the gratificating rush that uplifted my literal soul as the prongs of my fork pierced the crumbly exterior, allowing the aroma of a quality only flowers from Persephone's garden could produce to braid the hair of my nostrils. The color was not like fanta; not the radioactive tiger shade of American nor the marigold urine of British, but a perfect average Tangerine shade that rivaled the vibrancy of ancient Byzantine arsenic--based Realgar. I know people never eat cake with fruit inside, and I had never heard of cake flavored like an orange before, but this was an experience I would commit infanticide to have for the first time again. It had white chocolate chips embedded into the swirl of pearl and yellow--red that was the frosting. Say what you wish about white chocolate, I usually despise it with my very core, yet the mix of sweet, milky flavoring, and spunky citrus was immaculate to an orgasmic level. The servers were flawless. Prodigious, even. Our waitress was sensational, and she was nimble with her service. The small arcade in the back seemed fun, though I did not have the chance to use it. I was driving south on A1A from Ormond around lunch time. I decided to stop at the Charlie Horse for a quick bite to eat. They have a sign that says seat yourself. I was not acknowledged right away but after a short wait my waitress stopped by my table. She was very sweet. She brought me a drink refill and when I was finished she offered to bring me a glass to go. I noticed they have some $7.99 lunch specials. One of today's selections was a chicken club. Some really high notes and some low notes here. We ordered pick up and brought all our food back to the hotel room. The pick up was QUICK, probably 20-25 minutes from the time I called to when my husband picked up the food and came back, so can't complain about that at all. I'll start with our least favorite item - the peel and eat shrimp. I've ordered buckets of shrimp so many times I feel like I know what to expect, and these were so disappointing. Bland aside from dipping sauces, and not deveined? Also, definitely overcooked. (I've now done some research and I guess it's not "essential" to devein them but I've never seen it before at a restaurant). On to the things we loved! We got the Caesar salad with steak. The steak was seasoned delightfully, perfectly cooked, and paired great with the salad. We also got the shrimp alfredo. These shrimp were excellent. Covered in garlic and seasoning, deveined, and cooked just right. The alfredo sauce was just alright, but the amount of seasonings on the shrimp definitely made this dish a hit for us. Charlie Horse was super great. I can't say enough good things about our experience here. The food was wonderful. All you can eat crab legs were juicy and steamed perfectly. Hushpuppies and other sides were delicious. Clam chowder was hearty and tasty. Fried pickles were good and crispy, not too oily. The drinks were good too! Wife got a steak (she's not a seafood person) and it was cooked to perfection. Yes, the all you can eat crab dinners are on the expensive side--BUT--they are $30 less than the other place across the street in Ormond that advertises with banners on planes, and at market price, if you have 3 servings, it's well worth the money (especially with the unlimited sides). Surprisingly, the mini crab cakes were delicious. I expected them to be nothing but flour but they were full of crab meat. They should change the name to mini crab balls because they are not flat. I'm not going to be able to provide much more detail than previous reviewers, but wanted to compliment business. We are staying on the beach directly across the street from Charlie's. Most of the time we jump in the car and drive all over the place looking for good eateries. This time we walked across the street and had a superb experience. I ordered the combo platter: shrimp, crab legs and catch of the day. Shrimp were a good size, plentiful (12) and seasoned nicely. Crab portion was on the smaller side, but was flavorful. Catch of the day was a slab of white fish cooked perfectly. A healthy portion of coleslaw and mashed potatoes rounded out the meal. Wifey had Mahi Mahi with vegetable medley and coleslaw. Protein portion was generous and broiled perfectly. Wait staff was excellent; attentive to our needs and friendly. Food came from the kitchen hot and without delay. We arrived early, about 5:15 pm on a weekday. Within a half hour the place was full with several groups waiting. Tip of the day ... go early. Totally satisfied with our experience. Prices were justified by the quality of the food and service provided. My only regret was the small portion of crab. I wish it would have been larger, OR I had ordered extra.
