The gentleman who took our order over the phone was incredibly kind and helpful. We got a large pepperoni, sausage, and meatball pie, and a large spinach and ricotta. The slices? Absolutely massive. Four of us--starving--couldn't even finish both pies. Crust was cooked to the perfect crunch, toppings were fresh, and the flavors were spot-on. You can tell this place takes pride in what they do. The Pipolo family, including father Bill Sr. and mother Fabiana, had moved to the Poconos area from the Bronx, New York in 1984. Bill Sr. had a construction business which sons Bill Jr. and Peter worked in after graduating from high school. Bill Jr. first had some experience in the hospitality business when he owned the Calico Kitchen in Canadensis. When a location formerly home to Harrison's Tavern became available, the Pipolo family acquired it with the intention of turning it into an authentic Italian restaurant. The whole building was completely redesigned to resembled a trattoria in an Italian mountain village. Basso became a full Pipolo family endeavor. Even the grandchildren can be seen greeting guests and bussing tables from time to time. Bill Jr. and Peter later purchased the former Jagermeister German restaurant down the street and turned it into the PourHouse Neighborhood Bar & Grille after a renovation. For an Italian sub, it was surprisingly bland. The bigger concern came later that night. Within a few hours of eating, both of us became ill with stomach issues that lasted into the night. We obviously can't say with certainty that the subs were the cause, and I don't want to make an accusation we can't prove. However, the fact that we both experienced stomach issues after eating the same meal was concerning enough that I feel it's worth mentioning. Afterward, we took a closer look at what was left of the sandwiches, and the overall quality and freshness of some of the ingredients left us questioning what we had eaten. Unfortunately, between the chewy, stale-tasting bread, paper-thin toppings, complete lack of condiments and seasoning, and both of us feeling ill afterward, Gagliano's was a major disappointment. An Italian sub doesn't need to reinvent the wheel, but it should at least taste fresh and have some flavor flavor. Based on our experience, we wouldn't order from here again.
