As expected, the restaurant was crowded. After thirty minutes, it was hard to find an available table. Food is ordered at a counter, then a waiter takes it to the table. Portions were large. Fried rice tasted just right. It was piled high and I special ordered it without peas. It was prepared correctly. Five stars! Pot stickers were good. 4 stars. My wife had beef chow fun and that was five stars and the portion was large. Self serve soft drinks are available with unlimited refills. My step dad really enjoy his cheese roll which I didn't get to but I dropped about $85 on food. although we had good service I cannot recommend anything I tried other than the wings. My partner liked the bread part of the steam bun but the filing was extremely underwhelming (bland). My mom said the restaurant was really good years ago and it's been recommended to me by someone else too. Genuinely not sure how to rate this place. It was absolutely an unexpected find in a place I did not expect a Chinese bakery, let alone dim sum. For clarity: this rating is off the dim sum and dim sum-type dishes alone. Did not try the baked goods (aside from dan tat) or the rice plates/noodle plates, which seem to make up most of the menu. And the dim sum is... hit or miss. The bok choy is a generous portion, properly cooked, not the most interesting, but not bad. Spicy shrimp won tons are on the small side but tasty, although lacking in the umami that their better-known competitors (especially starting with a "D") begin with. Shu mai (shrimp or chicken, I got shrimp) were the most average/solid of the bunch, which to be fair, is entirely adequate. Har gow looked very pretty, but the skins were too thick, both skins and filling decidedly missing in flavor. The bean curd wrap was giant, super-sized vs. what you'd normally see, and while the bean curd wrap was on-point, the pork filling was pretty plain. This extended to the lo mai gai (sticky rice), which was ENORMOUS, like triple the size of what you'd see at normal dim sum, and similarly plain filling. To their credit, the quality of the stick rice itself was quite good, and the amount of filling was ample. Finally, the dan tat. Crust was a bit too crumbly and lacking in richness of the better ones, and the filling was oddly wrinkled, like it'd cooled too fast. However, the filling quality was good enough. They were busy when I walked in for dinner and were completely full a few minutes later, so much kudos to them-- they clearly are appreciated by the community, and it shows. Some diners at the table next to mine got the usual rice/noodle plates and many left quite full, so portions are good. Kitchen, as busy as they are, is both fast enough and a bit uneven. Short version: you're in Alaska, you can't expect what you get in 415 or 626. However, don't get too carried away either. read more

Overall 3.25 Stars After a filling and satisfying Japanese dinner, we wanted to finish the night with a dessert. Review will be shortly posted on the Japanese restaurant. Charlie's Bakery is a bit odd and quirky; just like me. It is a Chinese restaurant that serves Asian inspired dishes but bakes and serves Western bakery goods; pies, cakes, bread (baguettes, croissants, rolls, etc) The place is part of a strip mall on the corner of C Street and Northern Lights. When you enter in the non-discript place, you are met with an open concept design with many tables and chairs, glass counters and shelves to view the baked goods and four 60" TVs which display the Chinese dishes. The baked goods are all ready in viewed through the glass counters and open shelves. The place is not fancy at all. It is well lit and bright cuz the color of white is used; kinda' like a bakery place. Instead of a Chinese restaurant where the mood lighting is darker and the furniture aren't made of rich wood or red vinyl. There are two cashiers where you can order the food. After ordering, sit down, wait for the food and watch the eclectic people around you. When order is ready, your lighted "thing-a-ma-jig" will vibrate. 3.5 Stars - Food We ordered two desserts to share. 3.5 Stars - slice of Pineapple Cheesecake. If you are pineapple fan, you will like this one. It is loaded within the cheesecake. The cheesecake itself was dense but still had a fluffy and creamy texture. The whipped cream on top was firm and there was a sugary sliced Pineapple on top. The taste wasn't overly sweet but I thought it was missing something but couldn't my finger on it. However, the girls thought it was wonderful and delicious. I got two bites before it disappeared. 3.25 - 3.5 Stars - Green Matcha and Red Bean. Again, if you are a fan of matcha and red bean, you will like this dessert. It isn't too sweet. The cream is airy, light fluffy. I believe it has a hint of vanilla and red bean in the cream. The crust was made with red bean flour and the taste was mild. It was evenly covered w the powder green matcha and it was the main flavor of the dish. The perfect bite is to scoop all three flavors into one bite. The mocha flavor can be overpowering at times. Balance it out with milk or coffee. The girls gave it 3.25 while my star rating was 3.5. After having only two of many desserts, I will definitely come back for the Chinese dishes, variety of breads (come early for the bread) cuz they sell out quickly and the desserts. read more

Been on the hunt for my go-to Chinese spot here in Anchorage and I think I may have found my place. The steamed black cod was absolutely divine - cooked perfectly and seasoned in such a way that it made the black cod's delicate flavor shine. I ordered their braised beef noodle soup (spicy), and I ordered their spicy wontons. My wife had a seafood noodle soup. The food came out in a timely manner, they brought the order to our table. I used to frequent this place so much in high school when I worked at the KFC, that was located at the other end of the strip mall. We visited most recently, to pickup dinner on a Saturday evening. We made it in before their dinner rush, thankfully. Food, flavor, quality, and portions here, remain the same. Our food came out fast, fresh, and hot. My only complaint is that my "house fried rice," was really only "shrimp fried rice" which of course, isn't the same. We appreciated Charlie's' sauce section (chili and sriracha especially). This visit, I noticed canned soda and Hawaiian sun juices were available, in addition to their fountain soda options. I finally stopped in on my most recent visit to Anchorage and I'm so glad I did. I had the sheet rice noodles with beef and some egg tarts. The staff was friendly and food arrived quickly and was so delicious I decided to go back the next day to dine in. For lunch I had the bean curd rolls and spicy wontons. Although we'd researched this spot for breakfast/brunch bakery, we first came for dinner, noted that the bakery was almost totally sold out, and made a mental note that if we wanted to try their baked goods, we'd have to come again and arrive early! For dinner we enjoyed Egg Rolls, Shrimp Won Ton Soup with Noodles, and the Braised Beef Noodle Soup, all of which were delicious--some of the most delicate won tons I've ever had! When we came back another day for brunch, we sampled a few buns: Sausage, Egg, & Cheese; BBQ Pork; and Red Bean. A number of people had told me to go here for lunch, and I'm so glad I finally did. It's funny that a bakery is mostly known Chinese food, and that's what we were there for as there is no good Chinese food where we live, and I'd also struck out ordering from other places in Anchorage. This place is very basic, it's not a place for a long romantic dinner, it's about the food. We each ordered an enrtree but I also ordered Schezuan shrimp wontons off the dim sum menu and they turned out to be the highlight of the meal. You could really taste the shrimp, and Schezuan sauce was outstanding. If they sold it by the bottle I would never stop buying it. I put what was left in the bowl on the rice that came with my entree because it felt like a crime to just leave it there. My entree was beef short ribs. It came with rice and veggies. The ribs were seared and seasoned nicely. It was a bit messy as many pieces are bone-in and you pretty much have to eat with your hands, but napkins are plentiful. My wife had the crispy noodle with seafood and pork, and shared a bit with me. The noodles were good, the meat was tender and tasty, the shrimp were perfectly cooked.
