Holy moley is this place a hidden gem! It's a short drive from base so I convinced a few people to come with me to try it. We were not disappointed, I love all of their options of dumplings and buns! So, after living in Anchorage for almost 12 years, I finally tried Charlie's Bakery. My usual go to for Chinese cuisine is China Town, over in Government Hill, where I order from the optional menu. Charlie's is pretty much my go to spot now. I like the set up, menu on the wall, daily specials, and the Saturday only menu. The line seems to move pretty fast to me, and the food comes out pretty quickly. Last visit I had the Kung Bao Shrimp and my daughter had the Sesame Chicken. The portion sizes are generous, and the shrimp was just the right level of spicy. The chicken was good as well, not too sweet, and nicely crunchy. I was plesantly surprised by Charlie's Bakery. I wasn't sure what to expect at first, but the food here was absolutely delicious. My friends have been telling me to eat here, and I only wish I hadn't put it off for so long. We tried a few different dim sum dishes and each one was better than the last, especially the spicy wontons. The staff was attentive and prices were not bad at all. BBQ pork buns! An intern mentioned how delicious these are and therefore my addiction is on his conscience. Call ahead to make sure they still have bbq pork buns (baked not steamed) as they often run out. Seriously, so good that I've been known to buy five bbq pork buns at a time (some to eat then, some to share, some to eat for a snack later). I like to put a little sriracha (hipster ketchup) on these sometimes too. If you're a boba tea person (I know, the squishy tapioca texture is polarizing) stop by on Saturday for milk boba tea to go with your bbq pork bun. The dim sum that's also only available on Saturday is fun too, but not as good as the mindblowing bbq pork buns. This is hands down the best place to go for Chinese food. This place is jam packed during lunch rush with the 9 to 5 crowd and rightfully so. The dining area is small, but don't let that deter you from trying their dishes and their baked goods. My advice is when you come in during the rush, make sure you secure a seat first by putting your coat on a chair before going to the register to take your order. For lunch, I ordered the pork spare ribs. These were the best I've had since my visit to Chinatown in New York City years ago. The ribs were tender and juicy and they were marinated in a sesame oil sauce sprinkled with chopped green onions. The steamed rice that came with was also great. The rice is more on the moist and fluffy side but in my humble opinion, this is the way white rice is supposed to be made. For dessert, I tried their Boston Cream Pie. This was a multi-layered dessert with a decadent amount of chocolate, vanilla, and whipped cream. I certainly didn't have to eat dinner after I was finished. I'm not sure who has written the other reviews...however, I can tell you they don't know much about Chinese food and specifically Dim Sum! the shumai & hak-ow I ordered here had to be the worst I have ever had! Let's begin with the ridiculous price they charge for 3 pieces(this alone is outrageous), the hak-ow arrived Luke warm placed on the table top in its bamboo cooker with out a lid, dried out and obviously was old because the skin was tough and dried out! Shumai was prepared with old shrimp and the skin of the covering was too thick and again dried out! The braised beef noodle soup was too expensive for the portion and there should have been baby boy Choy in the soup which is the traditional way of being served and to have a vegetable you have to order separate. My wife is Chinese, I have lived in Taiwan and I know what I am talking about! If this is considered the best in Anchorage then you guys are screwed!!! read more

Really excited to have found this place. I never would have thought I would have to travel to Anchorage for some of the bet Chinese I've ever had, but low and behold here it is! Got the spicy wontons and dang, so delicious. The beef noodle soup is some next level tastiness for a shockingly low $12. The beef is generously served in the soup and it is so tender it falls apart as you eat it. The broth has some of the most well-developed flavor I've ever had. Moo shoo pork is A+ as well. The only downside I have is that their steamer is currently out of order due to the recent fire so I will have to patiently wait to sample more of their morsels. read more

Wow, there's a lot of negative reviews on here. I'm suprised because, even if it's not truly authentic Chinese/Korean/French (they have baguettes), it's still great food and decent prices. It's the only place in town to get dim sum dishes, even if they are a little pricey compared to traditional dim sum. As for the price, those pork buns are only $2 and they are HUGE and DELICIOUS. What exactly could you complain about? The sweet sesame balls are particularly delightful. I like the variety of dishes, from spicey to sweet, rice or noodles or soup. Every time I go in I get a bun of some fashion (BBQ pork and custard are my favorites) and order a new dish. Every time I leave happy. I drove by this place several times and saw that it had chinese food and was a bakery. Just based off the outside appearance and the name, it did not sound appetizing at all! However, I got curious and yelped it and boy am I glad I did! I am from San Francisco which might as well be a mecca for chinese food. Though the food I'm used to is hard to beat, this place is my go to place when I feel homesick and need to get some good chinese food fix. The workers there are so friendly and nice and they actually speak Mandarin! That's pretty legit. The food is prepared when you order it so you know it's fresh and haven't been sitting for hours on a hot table. It's is a bit pricey here but it is pretty comparable to the prices in town so therefore, I think the price is worth the quality of the food. They also sell egg custards and bbq buns! I also feel like the quality of the food is healthier less greasy compared to other places I've tried. You're paying for the quality and the freshness. If you're looking quick, chinese food, New Sagaya's hot table is cheap and fast but the quality is eh - passable but not as good as Charlie's Bakery. We've given this place many chances, but after this last time, we're just done with it. This is NOT good Chinese food. Since I saw many reviews rave about the sesame chicken being freshly made, we got that. Well, yeah, it was freshly made, but bland, and not crispy/not cooked long enough or hot enough in the fryer. It was Saturday, so we also got the duck. Just ok. I've had great duck for less - this didn't come close. We also had the cream cheese wontons - those were good. We decided to take home some bakery goods, since people also rave about their bakery. We bought 3 things, and all were a let down. The Irish Cream cheesecake was so bland. It was really light and fluffy, with no creamcheese flavor, or any other flavor for that matter. Bool. I also picked out a chocolate mocha looking cake - also very bland and very disappointing. Could not taste any chocolate flavor at all. It wasn't too sweet, yes, but it aslo didn't have any flavor. The third thing we tried was the chocolate roll. This did have a hint of chocolate flavor. Just a hint. Wow - what a waste of money! This place is completely over-rated. Everyone I know says that Anchorage doesn't have ANY good Chinese restaurants, so they settle for Charlie's. Authentic Chinese delicious dumplings and assorted Chinese combo dishes- I highly recommend the Boiled dumplings and authentic fried rice! Charlie's Bakery was quite the surprise. It appears to be the best choice for dim sum in Anchorage. While the steamed pork bun was enjoyable (and not too sweet), the crystal dumplings lacked flavor. Bok choy was very good. Sticky rice was also well made. My real gripe is that I spent $15 on a lunch that would have cost $5 - if that - in Chinatown. And this is definitely not nicer than a Chinatown dim sum hole in the wall. But I know... It's Alaska and everything is expensive here. read more
