I want to note that this is a bustling practice, which hopefully will give you some perspective amid all the reviews. A lot of people go to Charlottesville Eye Associates for their eyecare, which is an endorsement in itself. My experience so far has been great. After twice getting new glasses that weren't working for me after a few weeks (at another practice), then having trouble driving on a dark highway at night, I had cataract removal and lens implants at age 50. (My brother had the procedure done at 45, so genetics were likely the reason for my early issues.) Dr. Grover was recommended as "the" person to go to, and I was not disappointed with his service. He is friendly, efficient and highly competent. With my second eye now done, I can see 20-20 at distance, with clarity to the horizon, and I am now good to drive without glasses. My overall vision has never been this good, and so I wanted to express my gratitude to Dr. Grover and the rest of the staff. His recommendation for a standard lens in one eye and a Toric lens in the other worked out with miraculous results. The only drawbacks I can identify are the tradeoffs that they warn you about, but I'm not sure I was fully prepared for. I do get floaters and light sensitivity, including morning strobing, which I hope will either go away in time or I'll at least adapt to and notice less. Also, I now need reading glasses, since I went from nearsighted to farsighted with the surgeries. I did not go with the most expensive lenses that address both near and far vision, because there was a warning that some people experience glare. Given the state of my eyes, that was a good call, I think. I'm still in the period of finishing up eye drops and final healing, so the ultimate state of my eyes is subject to revision over time. But knowing that the removal had to be done (it only gets worse over time until addressed), I feel like I made the right choice going to Charlottesville Eye to have the work done. read more

Dr Grover performed cataract surgery on both of my eyes. My outcome was excellent. Dr Grover is an excellent surgeon and is extremely pleasant. I highly recommend him for eye surgery. Also, the entire staff were polite, pleasant, and professional. I highly recommend this practice. read more

Doctor Grover is everything I could want as an eye doc. Cataract surgeries went well. Unfortunately I later needed retina surgery by a different retina specialist. It took a couple of tries by Dr Grover to get the best glasses script for eye that changed shape with the retina surgery but he and his stuck with it and now I am corrected to 20/20. read more

The exam appointment was fine. However just be aware that they only do a cursory exam n you will have to make another appointment with an optometrist somewhere else if you need glasses. I took both of my adult children here too because we all needed glasses. They dont do a complete exam for glasses because they said they don't have much onsite equipment available so you won't be able to get a completed eyeglass prescription here. I didn't know that n now we all have to wait another year before our insurance will pay again so we're all stuck with no near vision n incredible headaches for another year. As long as u understand that you cannot get glasses after ur exam, it's an ok place. read more

I haven't been able to see well in a few years and my sight had finally gotten to the point where I needed cataract surgery. I felt very good about Charlottesville Eye Associates from the moment I walked in. Tiffany scheduled all of my cataract surgeries and follow-up appointments and was truly wonderful. She even dealt with my horrible Family Practice doctor's office (who I will never go to again!) Dr. Marcantonio is my eye doc and I felt like I was in great hands with him operating on my eyes. During the days of surgeries, he very carefully explained everything to expect during the surgery and was really good about talking me through my fears. He is very professional without being too stiff. And I have had two follow-up appointments per eye and one more to come--and that makes me feel good about their practice--they care. I hope I never have to have any more eye surgeries but if I do--I will go to Dr.Marcantonio. read more

I was told I needed a glaucoma screening and saw Dr. Marcantionio earlier today. I get nervous at the eye doctor because I hate the idea of anything touching my eye. I asked for really simple accommodations (like the doctor holding my eye open because I couldn't stop blinking), and I've never had a doctor take issue with that. I have some medical trauma, and it's like my eye glues shut when anything comes near it. Dr. Marcantonio refused to hold my eye open and was dismissive, saying it wasn't necessary and I'd do fine. He said he didn't have enough hands, and wasn't willing to see if a tech was free to help out. The staff could really use some trauma training. I'm not the only person who has anxiety at the eye doctor, and knowing how to help patients feel safe and comfortable should be front and center. read more

The docs are great, but I have not gotten an accurate refraction test in several years. I used their recent prescription for new glasses and had ghost images. Turns out the sphere, cylinder and axis were inaccurate in the prescription. I had to visit an optometrist to get an accurate refraction. read more

It seems many people don't read the paperwork posted around their office, including the forms you sign upon check-in. They do accept most insurances they just don't accept vision insurance because they're medical specialists. My daughter and I have had great experiences with them over the past few years. You also don't have to go to another optometrist for glasses like another review stated, they have an optical within their office, they just don't file vision so you'd have to pay and submit an itemized receipt for reimbursement (which we've done numerous times with no issues) and they definitely do complete exams there. You leave with a glasses prescription and you can take it wherever you'd like. Dr. Huntzberry is wonderful as is every other dr. we've seen for issues. read more

I've been here 7x since Mid-January with my mother - only 1 wait (lots of emergencies that day). Today I had an eye appointment with Dr. Grover. They took us early (AND when setting up appt they put it in with my mom so we wouldn't have to wait). It's a very professional environment and an organized system of serving their patients. The staff work well together and help each other willingly. Doctor was VERY VERY knowledgeable, informative and thorough in exam. I was very impressed. LOVE the doctor he has been wonderful with my mother also. Takes the time to explain. SO INFORMATIVE!! Front desk, back desk and technical staff all know they jobs and are willing to provide whatever you need. They are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. It's a very impressive environment. Dr William Grover is a highly competent yet caring ophthalmologist. He has an incredibly busy schedule of performing cataract surgery. However, he never made me feel like a number. I went here multiple times for some eye problems. We weren't able to to resolve my eye issues, but I am giving 5 stars because they tried so hard. I have never seen a group of doctors who care so much and are willing to work with you to this extent. I was only ever charged for initial visits, and if I had a follow-up problem with what was discussed it was included. I don't know if this is normal practice, but any other office I go to they try to squeeze out as much money as possible, and definitely do charge for follow-up questions. If you are looking to go somewhere for contacts/glasses, and don't have weird eyes like me, this is definitely the place to go!!! read more

I have had 2 very unprofessional visits. 1st, went for contact prescription. They sent me to Dr. Gonce who examined my eyes. Then I was told he does not write contact prescriptions. Cost of copayment, $80.00. Made appointment with Dr Easton. Received contact prescription, cost of copayment $45.00. Year later made appointment with Dr Easton. When brought into exam room was told they had to dialate my eyes and "see me" in my contact lenses before they can do the exam for them. Was not told to bring them when they called and confirmed the appointment. They said "it is the law" about seeing me in my contacts ? These people fitted and sold me the contacts and yet they kept repeating "it's the law" when I could not believe what they told me. At that point I walked out. Mike L. read more

Had my first appointment with Dr. MacIlwaine the other day, and I was very pleased with both him and the entire office. The doctor was very kind, thorough, and informative. I only waited a few minutes in the waiting room before being taken into the exam room, and the new patient forms were available on their website, so I saved a lot of time by filling them out at home beforehand, and handing them to the reception desk when I got there. I did not feel "rushed through" like you do at some doctor offices. As for insurance, they accept most all health insurance plans. But some people don't understand that part of the exam isn't covered by health insurance because it's the refractive vision evaluation (similar to the type of exam you get when you go to an optometrist for glasses). Refraction evaluation exams are never covered by any regular health insurance. The refraction evaluation is necessary even if you're not there for a glasses prescription, because the ophthalmologist uses that info to help understand your eyes' condition and to help diagnose any possible problems. I was very happy with my experience there, and I like that it's easy to get to the office. It's in the Pantops section of Charlottesville which is much easier to get to than other medical groups that are located in the older, congested sections of Charlottesville. read more

I saw them a year ago about why should have been a simple procedure. The doctor gave me terrible advice, described the procedure as "a big bloody mess" and now my condition has persisted and in need of even more care than what it should have been a year ago. I don't have insurance and when I called about pricing they couldn't even give me a range of what it would cost without seeing me in person (more visits, more money). Finally, basically yelling, I asked how many digits it would be and she told me the maximum price it would cost. Before the even happened they kept me on hold for 18 minutes before I hung up and called back. This place is bad. Go to EyeOne where everyone is helpful and transparent and their visits have fixed prices which they are happy to find for you. read more

Please spend your time and money somewhere else! First, you are not forewarned that they don't take any type I insurance. You have to pay and file it yourself and they are much, much more expensive than any other place around. I waited in the waiting room with about a hundred people for about an hour. Then, I had an instance where I had to call back to figure out a prescription issue, I spoke to 2 receptionists and then a tech got on the phone and was completely rude. When I reacted to her rudeness she told me not to get rude with her. The doctor finally called me back and was nice at first, we were working through the issue. Then I mentioned the customer service and instead of just saying "I'm sorry about the communication issue". She went into defense mode, she started talking about how long her tech has worked for her and even said the word anal in her rant. When I tried to stop her, she said that I was not to talk over her!
