Charming Elephant is a quaint and cozy restaurant dishing authentic Laos food. My usual dish is the Kapoon, a red curry noodle soup garnished with chicken, fresh cabbage, carrots, and bean sprouts. It's the perfect meal for a rainy day or a cold day.

Excellent all the way around We arrived 30 minutes before closing on an semi empty summer Monday night. We were welcomed warmly and with a smile. The small seating area was simple but clean. Its a nice typical asian inspired space. Family place ... Not fancy ... but date worthy. The services was great... he was nice and attentive. I ordered one dish they were out of but he was good at offering substitutions with similar profiles .... he knew the menu ... We ordered an appetizer of garden wraps them entree's of Pad Sai Ah, Ground Pork, Shrimp Fried Rice. ALL were great! My ground pork wonderful. One warning. We asked about spice levels. He said the "spicey" was above "Thai Spicy".. WOW! We all got " Medium and it was hot! Get Spicy at your own risk! It was great ... we can't wait to go back ....

I think this place is better at night. I went for lunch recently as I saw they offered lunch specials. I ordered their Khao Piek and it needed a lot of doctoring. I asked for limes and hot sauce. Then I got the bill and they charged me for the full amount instead of the discounted rate. I was too tired to argue and the staff wasn't anywhere to be seen. It was really empty when I went and the last time I went in person it was also quite empty. It's a large restaurant with a bar and main dining area. They've gotten rid of the crab fried rice from the menu, which was one of the best things on it. They still list a happy hour from 4 to 7 but I'm not sure that they will honor it. For the price, you're better off going somewhere else. I thought it used to be quite affordable but it was very expensive when I went mainly because I had expectations I would get changed lunch prices. The restaurant can be easy to miss. There's no clear signage but it's located right on Boston across from NiHao. Totally different cuisines but NiHao is just better. I thought I had found a good Laotian place but I don't think I'll be doing takeout or dining in again.

Charming elephant is a nice family-owned Laos restaurant. Ingredients are fresh and the staff are very friendly. I ordered a sugar cane juice, chicken mussamun satay, the Lao pho and the mango sticky rice. They pressed the sugar cane right in front of me. The chicken satay is very flavorful. The pho was perfectly seasoned and I loved the mango sticky rice.

3.5 stars We were excited to try this place but we were not super impressed with the food. The drunken noodles were not as flavorful as we are used to though the noodle texture was good and we liked the veggies. The Lao spice level was good and pretty dang spicy! The ground pork pad kapow was pretty good. The green curry did not have much flavor. It just tasted salty but otherwise no flavor. Overall we were expecting more flavor from the dishes.

So glad we found this restaurant. The food is really good, like super yummy.. Shrimp egg rolls were simple and crunchy. Full sized shrimp fried to perfection, golden brown goodness. Fried rice was another winner. We got it with chicken and it was delicious. Next winner was the pork belly in brown sauce with green beans. The pork belly was fried crispy and then smothered in this heavenly sauce. Veggies perfectly cooked, onions, red and green peppers, green beans. I covered my steamed rice in the sauce then dug right in. Lovely experience and just simply divine. We will return when in the Baltimore area. Another plus, they play Kpop videos on a loop. Try it!

Okay so I was actually really blown away by the food here! A group of us dined in on a rainy Tuesday and were basically the only people there. We made a reso but it wasn't needed. Maybe people mostly order takeout here? I highly recommend the passion fruit yogurt crush! I got it without alcohol and it was so refreshing. Perfect combo of tangy and sweet and I couldn't stop eating the passion fruit boba at the bottom! Yum. We started with the garden wraps, egg rolls, and fried chicken. The wraps were fresh and came with a yummy peanut sauce. Egg rolls and chicken were both perfectly fried and delicious! For dinner we shared the crab fried rice, shrimp pad see ew, laap with fish, and the shrimp salmon salad. My favorite dish by far was the pad see ew!! The noodle texture and sauce were perfect and had a nice kick to it. The crab fried rice was also really good and was seasoned with black pepper that made it stand out from others I've had in the past. The laap dish had good flavor but maybe a bit too fishy for me. I didn't actually eat the shrimp salmon salad as I can't eat uncooked seafood at the moment but it didn't seem to be the crowd favorite. For dessert we had the mango sticky rice and street bananas with coconut ice cream. Both were excellent but the sticky rice really stood out to me. It was warm and the mango was perfectly ripe! It hit the spot and was probably the best sticky rice I've ever had. Still craving it as I write this review! I will definitely be back to try more dishes! Give the spot a try!

I came here for restaurant week with my friends after hearing such great things about this place, and I was not disappointed in the slightest. The food was PHENOMENAL, easily making this restaurant one of my favorites in Baltimore. I tried some seafood options, and I loved that I was able to pick the spice level of the curry. Even more delightful was that the waitress brought over chili oil for the table in case we wanted additional spice. The food itself was very filling, and I honestly would have been satisfied with just the Tom Kai appetizer as a whole meal if the Crab Curry hadn't been absolutely amazing. The restaurant itself is set up like a typical Asian restaurant, but the painted elephants along the wall add a cute charm to the otherwise all-wood interior. It was pretty empty when I went for a weekday dinner, so no reservations necessary but worth a visit (and then some!) for sure!

The food was served so quickly! This is my first time trying Lao coconut coffee and it was did not disappoint. The menu was pretty pork heavy, but everything we had was delicious. It's a nice cozy place and will definitely be coming back!

As Nayvadius DeMun Cash, also known as American rapper 'Future', once said: sensational. Brace yourself to one of Baltimore's more sensually-involved fare which tickles and teases the palate. Immediately coming into this weathered, but tried and true eatery, I was entranced by the night-life themed Laotian decor. I wondered to myself if I had indeed, bought an airplane ticket to Laos itself. But that disillusionment was quickly waved away by a speedy seating in the calm and alluring restaurant. I looked through their menu with gusto, keeping my salivary glands at bay - with variable success. I ultimately ended up ordering the Tom Khem, fried meatballs, and drunken noodles. While engaging in knuckle-dead scholarly conversation and entertaining higher order propositions, our food arrived. To describe the first morsel that hit my tongue is to describe what it means to be alive - but I'll give it a shot. The Tom Khem tasted like the first few seconds of warm sunshine after persisting a frigid winter. It was Laotian comfort food in its essence. The braised pork belly soaked my soul with its inviting and addictive flavor of savoriness and umami. It was clear to me that this was a dish thoughtfully made and intentionally portioned to keep you satisfied but wanting more. The braise, poured over rice, pushed the envelope more - highlighting the effort and intricacies of the braising itself. The braise was sweet and savory, complimenting the pork belly and encouraging the inquisitive to embellish the dish with rice. Finally, the boiled egg, albeit simple as it was, was as delicious as it could be. Grounding the dish's roots to what a comfort food should be. I could really speak to how the drunken noodles and fried meatballs were of similar caliber to the Tom Khem, but I truly wish to encourage all Baltimore residents and visitors to give this place a shot. Charming Elephant embodies what it means to be a beloved, local Baltimore restaurant. A must-go.

A cute restaurant right by the water in Baltimore! The highlight of the menu by far for me was the drinks. They have many unique drinks, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic, that I'd want to come back to try. I had the lychee mojito, which tasted fresh, sweet, and perfectly minty, and my boyfriend got the lychee martini, which was stronger and yummy as well. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken, and found it to be okay--I ordered it spicy but it definitely needed some doctoring (I'd maybe order it at the Lao spicy level next time). We got crab rangoons for the table and also a tom yum soup, which were the two food highlights for me. The rangoons were crispy with a creamy, savory filling, and the tom yum was the perfect blend of spicy and sour. The Lao fried chicken was crispy and moist, with a tangy seasoning on top. I would definitely order the chicken, rangoons, and soup again, but would maybe order something else instead of the drunken noodles. It took some time for the food to come out and for us to get our check at the end, but it did seem like there was only one person waiting all the tables. I also personally found some items on the menu to be a little pricey, so this likely won't become a staple restaurant in my rotation. The bar menu was the real highlight of the restaurant for me, so I'll probably visit again for happy hour!

This place is like walking into my family's home and enjoying the Lao dishes I grew up with. I've been traveling for a while and have been craving some comfort food and this was the perfect place to be. Every bit was as if I was being transported and when I asked for real Lao spicy, they did it and I had happy tears from the fire and burning on my tongue... LOVE! I will be back and encourage everyone to come by and taste what real authentic Lao food tastes like, you don't need a plane ticket to enjoy this treasure of a restaurant! Khop Chai! (Thank you)

If you're looking for a Lao cuisine fix, you should check out Charming Elephant. I'm always looking for my next Lao restaurant to check out, even if it involves driving out to Baltimore for it. Our party of two had lunch here on a Sunday. We ordered the Sinh Lod, Nam Khao, Lao Sausage, Pad See Ew, and Laap Gai. The jerky and sausage are must order items. Always goes well with a side of sticky rice. Both the Nam Khao and Pad See Ew were both good. Good food and service. I believe it's street parking only.

I had a lovely restaurant week dinner here! I was very impressed by the drink menu, alcoholic and non alcoholic. I had the passion fruit ade and absolutely loved it! As far as the food goes, I thought the Lao sausage was amazing, so much flavor. The wraps we got as an appetizer had shrimp and pork in them and tasted pretty good, but they were a little dry. There were tons of other options so I'll just try something different next time. My bf got the mussamun curry and he thought it was okay, but I loooved it. Really good flavors in that too! I wanted the green mango sticky rice but they didn't have it so I just got the regular mango sticky rice. It was wonderful! I think our server was new because she wasn't able to answer some of our questions but that didn't bother me, she was really sweet and helpful. Overall the place was very charming and cute, I'd definitely go again with friends or for date night. read more

The Charming Elephant is pretty aesthetic, but other than that, definitely not worth it. I apparently stopped by during restaurant week, where I got 3 items for $35. I got jerky, a lettuce wrap (with very little lettuce), and some ice cream. I also got some drinks which were alright. The ice cream was the only good part of the meal. It was tasty and you actually got a good portion! The jerky and the wrap were just not satisfying (and totally not worth the price), I just begrudgingly ate it since it was what was ordered. The atmosphere was charming, but the food and the prices were 100% not. read more

We go to charming elephant fairly often because it is in our neighborhood and it never disappoints. The staff is always really friendly and the interior is nice with a lot of indoor plants. I would say that Baltimore doesn't have the best Asian food in general, but I think that the Charming Elephant is probably the best Thai/Laotian option. We have tried the Massaman curry, the drunken noodles, the egg rolls, the spring rolls, the mango sticky rice, and the Tom Kai soup. We especially liked the curry, the drunken noodles, and the sticky rice. The Tom Kai soup was not super flavorful when it was hot but we took it home and the spices blended overnight and it was actually better the next day. The charming elephant is always a solid option and you should try it! read more

Highly recommend this place! One of the best places in the city to eat. It's a great option if you want to change up your normal lunch or dinner routine, all of the food portion sizes are perfect for sharing or eating by yourself. When we go we typically order a bunch of things and share everything. The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable and can explain most everything on the menu. This is a great option if you're vegan vegetarian or gluten free, there are lots of options of food for you. Everything is very well flavored and seasoned and not like any other restaurants I've had in the area. I love brining friends and family here for the first time so they can experience the lovely flavors of Laos cooking. I also recommend this place to anyone who asks where to eat in the city! I especially like the Laos sausage with the salsa style dip, hands down a must have when you come here. The curry's are always delicious, we got the eggplant basil curry this time and it was so flavorful. The Nahm Khao is so good I tried to make my own Version of it, but didn't compare to theirs. Definitely worth checking out. read more

As a Canton local, it has been amazing having this family-owned Lao restaurant in the neighborhood - I can't get enough of their food! The first thing I tried was the Savanh jerky and khao piak (which is kind of like chicken noodle soup, but better) which were both soooo good! I especially liked dipping the jerky in their Jaew Bong sauce. Since then, I've also tried and have basically become addicted to their egg rolls - they are SO crispy and flavorful. And they have bubble tea! This place is consistently good and flavorful, it's definitely worth a try! read more

Every time I come I try my best to try something different(I've never been disappointed) all while being educated on the history of LAO. Adorable interior, calm and pleasant decor. The menu has a lovely variety of Lao and Thai dishes. Everything came out hot and attractive. We loved the meatball appetizer. We were not fans of the Lao sausage but it had tasty sauce and rice. The sausage may be an acquired taste. My Mussaman Curry was delicious. Can't wait to return. This is a nice block if Boston to visit. read more

Our first meal from Charming Elephant was delivery. The food was well prepared and tasty. I did not do a good job balancing the order but I am sure we will explore more of the menu on future visits and delivery orders. The Som Tum, ordered medium spicy came fiery hot and very bracing. Really outstanding with sticky rice to soak up the dressing. Grilled chicken was wings and the accompanying tomato based dip outstanding. The Lao Sausage was also great with a deep earthy, herb and funky flavor. By mistake, I selected the same tomato dip. Both of these dishes are just meat and the dip, so we should have ordered just one and tried something else. In any case, the mistake was mine and not the fault of the kitchen. Can't wait to explore more of the menu! The meal was a bargain as well and we have leftovers. read more

My sister and I paid this restaurant a visit after receiving good recommendations from some acquaintances. Got there in time for lunch, at the time we were the only customers in the restaurant. The atmosphere was very calming, mixed with a weird incense smell that gave us just a slight headache. We ordered quite a few food, and overall were very pleased it them. The spring rolls appetizer was very similar to how we Vietnamese would make them. It's a safe choice of appetizer so if you don't know what to get for start then I would recommend trying that. We also got the meat-ball skewer appetizer (I forgot the actual name) and that was really good. Their papaya salad is super pungent and spicy that I felt like taking a punch in the face every time I took a bite, but my mom seems to like it very much. For my main meal, I got the Green Curry which was very heavily seasoned. My tongue definitely was not prepared for this experience, but I could see myself loving it when I get used to it more. I ended up taking the Curry hone for leftovers and I finished it later. Amazing given that I rarely touch any leftover. If you're considering trying Laotian food, I would recommend this restaurant 100%. I'm only giving this a 4 star just because our server was exceptionally bad (hardly gave us any check in that we had to call him over multiple times...) read more

Took my friends here for lunch today to try Laotian food for the first time and we loved it. I ordered the Khao Piak, a chicken broth-based noodle soup. And wow. The chicken broth was thick and savory, and tasted like it has been simmering with bone for hours to bring out that taste and texture. The noodles tasted fresh too. My friends also loved their dishes- pad see ew and a sausage dish. For dine-in, the tables were all distanced from each other and they had a convenient contactless menu at the table (you scan a QR code). After we finished, the owner stopped by to ask how we liked the food, which was really sweet and thoughtful. Can't wait to eat here again. read more

We've gotten delivery before but last night was the first time we ate in. The restaurant is very charming and well decorated and we were able to sit where we liked. My husband and I split the fried meatballs for an appetizer ($5 during happy hour!) and they were delicious. When I ordered the red eggplant curry and asked for the rice to be substituted for the wide rice noodles instead they were super accommodating. I got it medium but I think I'll try Laotian spicy next time as I didn't find it very spicy! Husband had the tom khem and really enjoyed it, especially the pork belly and soy egg. For dessert we had the fried banana with a scoop of Thai ice cream. OMG. So good, especially eating the banana, caramel and ice cream all in one bite. Next time we go I want to try some of their fun drinks from their expansive menu. If you want something different and delicious try Charming Elephant! read more

The food was so good. A friend and I stopped by for dinner. We were in time for happy hour so we got the meatballs, eggrolls and wings. All were cooked frsh and hot. They were all good. My friend ordered the spare ribs and enjoyed them. I ordered the Mussamon Curry and think I found a new favorite dish. We had takeout from the Charming Elephant this weekend. It was good average nice food. One of the appetizers was spectacular, the sausage, juicy, bursting with flavor, delicious! The spring rolls were pleasant. We had several entrées, including a good noodle dish, a good chicken and green bean dish, and a very good red curry eggplant dish. I came here with boss lady for happy hour. We were looking forward to trying food entirely new to us, Laotian cuisine. First of all, it's so great to live in a city that can bring us such a diverse restaurant scene. Overall, the food was okay. The best thing we ate off the happy hour menu was the Savanh beef jerky. The meat had a familiar texture with a salty and slightly sweet savoriness that was addicting. The chicken wings and garden wraps were fine but really nothing special. The Lao styled coffee was far too sweet. I couldn't really note any coffee flavor. There was only one waiter working and no bar tender which was very surprising around prime time on a Friday. Outstanding food, service and setting. Arrived early for a Saturday night at 6 p.m. and glad of it -- they got busy! Yet everything ran smoothly and the ambience was relaxing and quiet enough for conversation among our party of six. The menu is not overly large, but offers great variety. First time here and WOW. Everything was so so good ". Husband but krapow and loved it, and he is so picky because he often makes this dish at home. I'm always down to try new Asian food around Baltimore being a transplant from Southern California. I called in for takeout on a Saturday for my boyfriend and myself. We got the Egg rolls, fried meatballs. I wanted to try the Lao Pho but sadly it's only available on weekdays. For the main course we got the Grilled Gai with sticky rice and Jaew Mak Lin and the Lao Sausage with sticky rice and Jaew Mak Lin. Overall the meal was around $50 with tax and tip. Pros: I felt like the flavors were really authentic and reminded me of street food I've had in Southeast Asia. Cons: Portions are pretty small. I was full after eating half the appetizers and my main dish but my boyfriend was not satisfied and hungry afterwards. Also the sticky rice doesn't travel well and becomes kind of clumpy. I would not recommend the meatballs, they tasted like the meatballs you get with pho and are similarly sized. You can buy something very similar frozen at any Asian grocery store. Also would recommend adding descriptions for the sauces because we had to google those separately to figure out what was in them! Definitely would try again but not at the top of my takeout list. read more

Established in 2020.

Charming Elephant is the first Lao restaurant in Baltimore. It all starts with our parents who became the refugee of the Secret War in Laos and they were forced to adapt to many different cultures, but they wanted to bring the Lao culture no matter where they went. We hope to bring Lao food to the streets of Baltimore, to embody Lao culture through our authentic cuisine, and to bring the warmth of a sticky rice basket.

Lao Sausage with Jeow Bong I've never had something so complex and delicious before until I ate this. The waiter told me it takes about 3 people to make it in total and that they get their dipping sauce from Laos. There's another one but I don't really rmember the name like that because I only get jeow bong. 2. Lao Pho I'm VERY picky on my pho. I was a little partial to Laotian pho because I heard they be putting sugar in the pho, but I am obsessed with their pho. 3. Yum Seafood This is one of their new items, but it is an absolute get. It's pretty expensive but once you see it, you'll know why. There's a bunch of squid and shrimp piled on top of daikon and some sweetish sour sauce, and it was such an exhilarating flavor that I've never tried in Baltimore. 4. Goi Tuna Another seafood dish, their goi tuna is SO GOOD. It's like sushi-grade salmon mixed in with the flavorings of Lao Sausage, and it was honestly way better than any poke bowl I've tried. 5. Fried Chicken Their fried chicken takes a long while to make but it's so good. It's so crisp and well seasoned, top wings in Baltimore. 7. Yogurt Crush and the Lychee Mojito These gotta be my two favorite happy hour cocktails from them so far. Great appetizers and noodles. I highly recommend the shrimp eggrolls and chicken satay! I have ordered the tiger steak more than once, when in the mood for steak. It is flavorful and consistently good. As for the noodles, the cheesy pad thai is my favorite but others are good too.
