Just east of Burney is a restaurant we need to chat about, Chatty Kathy's! At 2:00 in the afternoon it was quite busy for the offseason and for a very good reason. The bacon cheese burger was loaded with bacon on a bun that didn't fall apart when I bit down. Shouldn't need mentioning but so many buns crumble and the patties slide out into your lap so you need to change. (A sad story for another day). Not here for sure. Also had onion rings, which were excellent with the side of ranch. The BLT on toast did not scrimp on the bacon. The side of fries were thin and crispy. This is a fair burger, definitely the best you'll find in Burney. The bun was not toasted and was a little soggy. But the ingredients were good. I liked the fries, shoestring are my preferred fries. This is a fun diner/takeout spot. It has a good, homey feel and service is quick, efficient and friendly. I called in and they got the order exactly right. Great little spot to drop into before hitting the hills. Mom and pop style diner and pretty much the only thing you can munch once you get this deep in the area. So if you're passing and hungry stop! Burgers aren't too greasy, good flavor and a handful for sure. Tots are easy to share and also enjoyed because they weren't excessively greasy either. Not sure what base they use on ice cream or shakes but definitely sugar packed so if you're not that into sweets like me just order the smallest one and take what you can. Considering how slammed busy they were they are efficient at taking orders and getting the line moving, so support local business and you won't be disappointed. read more

To survive in a very small back-highway community or town, a restaurant must serve good food because most of it customers are local. Few tourists to snare here. Chatty Kathy's is not an exception and the ortega hamburger I had was very good. A big bun held a large beef patty, ortega chili, cheese, tomato and lettuce. Two pickle slices were on the side. The staff were efficient and helpful. I ate in one of the few booths inside, foregoing an outside picnic table. Stopped in after a visit to Burney Falls. Tiny and cute hole in the wall burger joint. The burgers are huge and the prices are reasonable. Stopped at Chatty Kathy's on a whim and was blown away by how amazing their mushroom Swiss burger is. Anyone that's in the area needs to stop here and try their burgers. AMAZING!!! We took a day trip to Burney Falls. I had never been in the area. On the way home we were going to stop at a quick subway but decided why not try something local. We found chatty Kathy's and I am so glad we did. We got a couple burgers and the macaroni salad. Both the burgers were great! Super tasty and a great size. The macaroni salad was one of the best I've ever had. It tastes a bit.... pickled I think? But it was absolutely delicious. We also got a shake, peanut butter and Caramel. It was soooo good. The perfect thickness and the taste was great. I wish we could go again, if we're ever in the area we will! Although the prices are good, my only complaint is when we looked up chatty Kathy's on google the prices were about half of what they actually are. So those need to get updated. read more

My friend who lives in Burney invited me to a birthday party she was having for her sons. Her two sisters and I took a trip to attend the birthday party for her two boys. Even though I have been to Burney several times, I had not had the chance to make it to Chatty Kathy's, but luckily on this visit we did. My two friends and I went there November 2, 2024 around 5ish. The three ladies working there were friendly. Then shortly later my friends' brother also came by to order a milkshake. What we ordered was good. I ordered a cheeseburger, fries and a hot dog so that I could share with my friends. One of my friends also ordered a mushroom Swiss burger and a grilled cheese sandwich. We all enjoyed the food. I also bought a shirt as a souvenir. I liked dining inside since it felt real cozy and I enjoyed looking at the different pictures on the walls . Even though we were there close to their closing time, they were friendly and didn't rush us. I would like to come back if their restaurant is still around, which if all goes well, I think it will be. In chatting with the ladies it was mentioned that there will be some changes. Don't blink, you might miss this place and you definitely want to stop here! A tiny little burger place with a few red picnic benches in some filtered tree shade outside and a small indoor eating area, Chatty Kathy's was just what we needed after a tiring hike. The burgers were really good and if you love tater tots, you must get them here! They were light and crispy and not so greasy. The service was good even though they were busy. read more

Don't listen to David's negative review. My family stopped here on our way home from camping and this place was exactly what we were looking for! The service was fast and friendly, the place was very clean and inviting. I chatted with Kathy's sister about where some of the local art was taken on the walls, and they gave me even more tips for our trip next year! I got the bacon cheeseburger with onion rings and it was absolutely the best burger I've had for a while, real burger shack style. All of the ingredients were incredibly fresh and it was the most quality burger I've probably gotten in Northern California! We all got a mix of sides and they were all amazing! Seriously Delicious! Huge portions! I had the fish and onion rings. My husband had a cheeseburger and fries, Special Sauce is fry sauce- mayonnaise and ketchup mix. I had a peach shake and my husband had a banana shake. The service was fantastic, such nice people. It is on a highway so it is a little loud, but not so bad that you can't hear your conversation. There are cute red picnic tables that are clean and all shaded. We got there at 11:15, so we didn't wait long for lunch. Great stop near Burney falls for a meal or snack. Very crispy tater tots, nicely salted fries and yummy milkshakes. Carmel milkshake is AMAZING. Chicken strips are generous and more like fillets. Today, after our visit to the falls, the only reason we made the 4 hours drive to Burney, we stopped at Chatty Kathy's for lunch. I hate that I cannot leave a 5 star review because the burgers and fries were amazing. I'm leaving a 3 star review because the lady taking our order was EXTREMELY rude. I have never experienced anything like that at any establishment I've been to. She rolled her eyes when we removed a topping that came with the burger and then would continue with "so what do you want then?" I overheard her saying she was Chatty Kathy's sister. So Kathy you need to have a talk with your sister, I am sure she treats other customers this way. Overall though food is delicious but again, poor service. read more

I live walking distance with all that being said i still prefer to drive down to alpine in burney as they have bigger cups for shakes. When i order a shake i don't want a kids size cup lol. This place is HELLA good! We first found Chatty Kathy's last year when we took a trip to Burney Falls. We pulled up just before closing time, starving and just hoping we could still get something to eat. I walked up to the window and asked if we were too late. I was greeted in a friendly way and the lady told me in the nicest way, "we'll feed you!". The burgers, tater tots and shakes are amazing! Fast forward over a year: We came up to Mt. Shasta for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and found ourselves at Burney Falls again yesterday so of course we returned to Chatty Kathy's! We were nervous that maybe they'd be closed because of the holiday but they were open and serving up those delicious burgers and tots. The only problem was that the milkshake machine was not working but after pigging out on my bacon cheeseburger and crispy tots, it's probably a good thing I didn't have a milkshake; I might have slipped into a food coma right then and there! Stopped by after a day of hiking at Lassen Nat'l Park. We were headed to McDonalds but saw Chatty Kathy's sign and decided to try it. Such a great choice! The chicken sandwich was fresh and warm, the tri tip slider special was more like two tri tip sandwiches for the price of one, and the fries were perfectly crisp.
