My friend and I stumbled upon this place after going to Burney Falls. It was past breakfast so we had to work with the lunch menu. I got the patty melt and onion rings. They were just what I needed. My friend got the burger which he didn't like as much but I have to always remind him that my eyes always find the best thing on the menu wherever we go. This place is right on the PCT and there were hungry backpackers outside. My friend offered them the rest of my onion rings which I felt uncomfortable doing but they gladly accepted them and piled them on their own plates. Whoever runs that place was hustling. Working the grill, taking orders when all the orders were done, cleaning tables, etc. Be nice, tip well. These people are hard working. Enjoy. read more

This cafe came highly recommended by the owner of Winema Lodge so we made it a point to stop by to pick up lunch. But our experience was disappointing. The restaurant is much smaller than what the building makes you believe. The owners were either stressed out or maybe there was something else going on, but they didn't seem super happy to be serving people or taking orders. Based on their behavior, we would've switched our order to go because I didn't want to sit down to eat and be subjected to poor service. In any case, we stuck to ordering food to go. The lady at the counter didn't bother to tell us that they don't serve breakfast at around 1 pm (and it doesn't say that on the menu either). So, I felt a little rushed to choose something else under her stare after being told that my breakfast item was not available. We ended up getting a fried chicken wrap and a pastrami sandwich. Both came with fries. The fries were very good. The chicken wrap was also very good. The pastrami was not good. It was chewy and a little dry. We didn't finish the sandwich. These sandwiches are not cheap but JJ's is the only cafe/restaurant in the area north of Lassen, so this is what you get if you want to stop for food. They also close at 3 pm so keep that in mind when coming here. In hindsight, I would probably not have stopped here at all. read more

These pancakes are HUGE! I got this plate to share with my boyfriend and couldn't even finish my own pancake. Service was pretty good, we did have to wait a bit for the food but I think they were busier than normal. Overall no real complaints, we had a good experience. Stopped by for lunch. I met the new owner. The menu is no longer outside on the wall. They took our order from the table. My son ordered chicken strips and my wife a cheeseburger, they both enjoyed it. Homemade pastrami was available for the first time in a few years. The pastrami was fire. I subbed mayonnaise for mustard, and lettuce & tomato for the pickles. The rye bread was ok, but next time I would order a hamburger bun to keep it together better. The location leaves few other options unless you can make it to reeds in shingletown or burney. Basic diner food. Nothing stood out as great or poor. Even prices were average, but the breakfast meets the need versus doing dishes yourself. The staff was polite and nice. read more

My wife and I stopped here just before 3pm on a Sunday. There are 8 tables inside that seat two to four and appear to be easily assembled for larger groups. In addition, there are several tables on back patio. Most of the tables were occupied but there was one 2 seat table by the back door which we took. We were brought menus and had our drink orders taken. It seemed like they were really busy in the dining area as tables turned quickly. We had to ask that our table be wiped. We checked out the menu and when our drinks arrived, we placed our order. My wife ordered the mushroom swiss burger and I chose the pastrami sandwich. We both ordered fries as our side. There are not many places to get something to eat near the intersection of 89 and 44 and these are both common routes to Nevada and rural Lassen county, CA. We drive through here several times a year and always comment that we need to stop and check out the area. If JJ's keeps doing it right, they will have something pretty amazing. Based on the experience today, maybe they already have. There was a steady stream of people in and out while we were there. Our meals arrived in a timely fashion and looked delicious. We both really enjoyed our meals and noted this is a good stop for future trips. read more

It's the closest cafe to Lassen national park and also place that has WiFi in an otherwise no network town. They have really great service and the members are really nice and friendly. Due to covid-19 they only have outdoor patio seating. I ordered the Mediterranean scramble that had feta cheese, olives, basil pesto and scrambeo eggs. It was pretty good. What a fortunate find! After a long day of hiking Lassen peak and in desperate need of some sustenance (and a bathroom) we saw the sign for JJ's Cafe on the side of the road. Apparently, we weren't the only ones, because this place was packed and after waiting only a minute or two we lucked out with a seat on the patio. After connecting to JJ's free wifi (the first wifi we'd had in days), I saw why there was such a draw - this place has amazing reviews! Perhaps it was my ravenous hunger, but I completely agree with those reviews. The burger and Sierra Nevada was one of the most satisfying meals in recent memory. Service was awesome. Prices are fair. If it weren't such a trek out to Lassen, this could become a regular stop for us. read more

I live in a large suburb in an extremely affluent county that is also unfortunately very gentrified and a bit of a food desert .... yet in the middle of a literal desert at a roadside joint I got a burger that blew my socks off while driving between park sections to backpack a new area. We stoped here on 9/23 because the reviews were decent and we stayed at a nearby camping area, I was excited for a hot meal. We walked in at 11 am and was rudely greeted by a young lady that rolled her eyes and told us the menu is outside, not friendly in the slightest. So we outside to look at menu and another older lady greeted us politely ( owner?). She informed us they have been busy and would not take our order for at least 30 minutes, WTH? As a restaurant owner and manager this is incomprehensible!! Never turn away business. Wishing this place was in our home town, we decided to stop for a bite to eat while on the way to the redwoods and our experience was absolutely perfect. Great service, great food, and affordable. New owners as of August, and now open in the winter! Delicious grass-fed beef burgers, toasted buns baked on premises, and the split pea soup was Amazing. We stopped in randomly for lunch after walking around Lassen Ntl. Park and what a treat. If you enjoy good food, you'll love this place. They're also quite allergy aware. Nothing but potatoes go into their flyers, so gluten-free ppl rejoice! They have a bunch of dairy-free options as well. Got a couple of pastries for breakfast tomorrow. The full country Benedict had homemade biscuits from scratch that were light and fluffy, house made sausage patty seasoned to perfection, and a delicious white gravy with just the right kick of black pepper. Our family was visiting Lassen Volcanic National Park, and this is by far the best food in the area. Food at the National Park is not great, but this little gem was excellent.
