Was in town a couple days and wanted to get my daughter a new skateboard for her birthday. After looking up skate shops I found Chauncey's. So glad I found this place!! When we first arrived we had a short wait as they were limiting guest. She kept us informed and I was happy they were taking the appropriate safety precautions. We had seen many businesses during our stay ignoring them. When we got in the shop the staff was nice, knowledgeable and took the time to explain the different wheel uses and designs. We settled on a board she liked and did some more shopping. Prices were more then reasonable and quality of the shirts and hoodies were great. We even came back the next morning before returning home and bought some more items. Will be back in town soon and will be sure to stop in again. read more

The owner of this shop was extremely rude and accused my friends and I of shoplifting. We were merely browsing the store with backpacks on. Throughout the entire time, the owner was following us around the store and eyeing us down. When we were about to leave, he harshly confronted us but shut up really fast when I gave him permission to search my bag. I understand his suspicion, but If you're that paranoid then I would recommend a sign that says "no backpacks allowed." However, i'm relived that I refrained from wasting my money on unfortunate looking clothing.That store isn't even deserving of theft. read more

The owners and staff are always super friendly, give great recommendations (they suggested an after sun spray -small company, not major brand -that actually stopped peeling and I now can't live without), and stock a smaller selection of quality items. I was shopping around for surf booties and a wetsuit this weekend, and felt compelled to write this review after such an awesome and successful experience at Chauncey's. I've always loved Chauncey's, so this review is long overdue! I've just taken the plunge to buy gear to extend my season for surf and SUP and have been shopping around at the OC and Rehoboth surf shops. I pretty much knew what I wanted in terms of footwear, so I was pretty much able to pick out my booties on my own. Chauncey's had a great selection and I thought that price I ended up paying was decent. But I've never owned a wetsuit before and didn't know quite were to begin. I didn't know what thickness in material I would need, or what size I would wear. Embarrassed to say, I was having a hard time picking out the women's suits from the men's! I cannot even begin to describe how much help Blair was in choosing a suit. He is so knowledgeable and was able to explain to me all of the technical and manufacturing details of the suits and what makes one suit preferable over the next. He ended up selling me a really great suit that fits perfectly. I paid around $140, MUCH less than I anticipated. Since I didn't really know what I was looking for or what I need, he could have easily taken me for a ride and convinced me to buy a much thicker suit for a much higher price. I really appreciate his honesty in helping me find exactly what I need. Blair was definitely more knowledgeable and helpful than the people who helped me in my wetsuit search at other local surf shops. In addition to a great selection of surf gear and equipment, Chauncey's has an awesome selection of women's and men's clothes. I adore the jewelry, too! Blair is the man! Best board repair in OC! Best inventory at the best prices. At Chauncey's you will get personalized and very well educated service. Everybody here is cool and there is no "vibe" of superiority or snotty localism which is prevalent elsewhere. These people know their stuff but are humble enough for even the newest beach goer. You feel accepted walking through the doors and you know they will take care of you and not advantage. BEST SURF SHOP IN OC! Both Chauncey and Blair have been in this biz forever and it shows with the friendly laid back attitude. I have been buying Chauceys T-Shirts and Sweatshirts for years and they are great quality. My teen daughter keeps stealing whatever I get so every summer I find myself restocking. Chauncey has also organized surf lessons and board rentals for my kids and they had a blast. This is the best shop in town and I would not think of stopping anywhere else. read more

If you can't even pretend to respect me when I'm offering you that kind of a sale, I am not going to be particularly interested in coming back to you for the various small items I'll need at other times. So why 3 stars rather than 1? I had actually bought something else there earlier. Then, folks were helpful, and I was glad finally get what I needed. Also, it looks like the shop is set up very nicely to help men so it's not as if the place is a total failure. Indeed, it may be that the guy who thinks women aren't interested in surfing in the winter may just be one patronizing jerk and not representative of the place as a whole. (As to the truth of the claim: there are so few women surfers that even if the same proportion of female surfers as male surfers surf in the winter, there will just be a very small number of women surfers in the winter. That is, women aren't necessarily disproportionately unlikely to surf in the winter -- they could have the same likelihood of winter surfing as men and still rarely show up in the water, just due to numbers. After all, MOST surfers, men and women alike, don't really go out in Jan/Feb on the Eastern Seaboard. So a shop in MD may reasonably decide not to carry 5/4 women's wetsuits, due to lack of demand. But that's not the same as the claim that women, as a group, just don't go out surfing in the winter, but men do.) read more

I'm learning to surf and have been on a body board for years so I'm familiar with the waves. Went to K Coast and rented different boards to get a feel for what I wanted to buy. Didn't like the attitude at K Coast and their prices were high for their "pop out" boards which they were calling "used". A friend recommended Chauncey's and the customer service was great. I found a used board that's perfect for a beginner and not at all pricey. Wish I had started there in the first place. I'll definitely go back. read more

I won't go anywhere else than Chauncey's for anything surf-related in OC. I was referred to Chauncey's by the guys at East of Maui for two board repairs... one on a long board, the other on a SUP. "We could do it and it will look good," they said. "But Chauncey's will make it look like new." Indeed he did, and for a reasonable repair price that made me happy. But what made me happier than I ever expected to be was what happened when we asked Chauncey if he had a-coupla boards for us to rent to make our drive worthwhile. . . "Sure take mine. . ." For a *very low price* and a smile he graciously let us take two of his long boards out for a ride for the day. On our second trip back to pick up the boards, I forgot my SUP paddle and he took one out of the wrapper for me to borrow for the afternoon. This doesn't happen with the "board shops" and operations around D.C. -- they charge for everything and anything with an attitude to boot you out the door. Forget that. . . I'll deal with the *pain* of a three-hour trip to the beach to deal with a reliable surf shop and generous service for my surfing and Stand Up needs. read more
