Second try, still a "no" from me. We went to Che Gaucho when it first opened and they didn't have air conditioning. The ambience was lacking and the food was...okay. seeing that it is (somewhat surprisingly) still open, we decided to give it another shot. The wait was a bit long considering there was an open and available table. They were short-staffed. The waitress had some difficulty understanding me, so I switched to Spanish. She didn't seem to like that (although she clearly understood me better, she still responded in English). As a result, she got our order wrong, just a bit. We ordered a dozen empanadas for the family, and they were SO SMALL. They were also difficult to identify what was what. Not even the wait or could figure them out. They fet stamped with a letter or two, but there is no legend to decipher the code. There was so little filling, and the chopped beef was half-gristle that was inedible and had to be spit out. Because they were so small and expensive we didn't want to order more to fill us up. So we passed by McDonald's on the way home (yuck) and some of us ate cereal at home to fill up. If you are looking for empanadas, this is not the place I'd recommend. The best we've had has 2 locations and is "the Original" on Westheimer & in Katy. Last note - the A/C now exists, but struggles to keep a comfortable temperature inside the restaurant, and the booth seethe felt like they back was going to break off. This review is mainly based on bringing uncooked empanadas home and trying to cook them. I asked the kind lady at the counter about that and she said people do it but their ovens at the store get hotter so I should turn mine as high as I can to cook them. Well they mostly exploded and oozed all over the place. If staff can reply to this on proper way to cook at home that'd be great. I did one ham and cheese empanada to eat in the car though and it was great, flaky and cheesy inside, not soggy and leaky like mine so I know they're good! The chimichurri is also awesome! The ones I tried to cook at home were Hawaiian, spicy Saltena, chili cheese dog, and Italian. The spicy Saltena did end up coming out the best, least exploded, and most filled, and it was awesome, I'm thinking I'll only want those for the future! read more

Overall it was quite tasty. We started with chorizo argentino as an appetizer and it was delicious. For the main meal, 2 of us had churrasco and 1 the vacío. The churrasco was flavorful and tender. Unfortunately the vacío was not- while it had flavor, it was very tough cut of meat. The chimichurri (plain, not spicy) is also quite good. The empanadas were "ok". Nothing exceptional. The only major disappointment was the heat inside the restaurant! NO A/C and even with the sun going down was getting quite unbearable! Technically if I could give it 3 1/2 stars, I would. I was looking for a good local place to buy some lunch. Figured what the hell, based on the reviews here, i'll try this place for takeout. Got the Chicken, Saltena, Italian, Italian Veggie, and Cheese Empenadas. Fresh is the word here. Haven't had empenadas like this since I lived in Miami. All were great. Chicken was tender, not dry, same with the beef in the Saltena. Delicious! Italian and Italian Veggie were tasty, expected a little more filling in them. The Cheese was a pleasant surprise. We also got the MediaNoche swch for my teenager, she ate the whole thing, and she's a picky eater, so I'm guessing it's good. Pizza too, we got that. Good and tasty, not greasy. Overall, great food, decent prices. Definitely a great local place to stop and either eat in or take out. I'll be going back for more to taste the rest of the menu. read more

The empandas here are pretty good! Queso and the Salteñas (spelling) are the best. I could do without the sauce you get, but that's not a big deal. For the price...it's definitely worth it. The only reason I'm not giving them 5/5 is because the "spicy" empenadas just aren't spicy...and I'm a white girl from New Jersey. If it's not spicy enough for me then it's not spicy at all. I was expecting more for an Argentinian restaurant. The empanadas are tiny! Never had empanadas this small before. Anyone could make small empanadas using store bought Goya dough. If you seek for a typical place you are, at least, expecting to find a big, nice size empanada. Like the ones they serve in Argentina. But the worse of all was the A/C. It was uncomfortably hot inside. We were all sweating waiting for our orders that took very very long to come out. Given all the gracious reviews I had high expectations of my Che Gaucho experience. Everyone was very friendly and I enjoyed the dining music. The experience was a little confusing. You order at the counter but I wasn't sure how to get drinks, silverware, condiments. It was a combination of the wait staff bringing some items and us finding other items. Not a deal breaker, but a little communication while ordering or a sign would be helpful. The baked empanadas were delicious. We had spinach and spicy criolla. I would highly recommend the spicy criolla. We also ordered a Beef Milanesa sandwich. At some point while eating the empanadas we were told that the Beef Milanesa was given to the wrong table and would it be ok if we ate the other tables' sandwich, a Lomito. Sure, why not? It's not what I ordered, but everything on the menu sounded good. However, the particular cut of steak from this Lomito had enough steak fat and gristle on it that when I separated it from the meat it had covered about one third of the surface area of the sandwich. To top it off, the edible meat was pretty tough. I'm not super picky, but I'm being completely honest when I say that I've had far superior steak at Waffle House. Yes it was a sandwich cut but why even serve a piece of meat like that? I suspect that I dined at Che Gaucho on an off day, but that was most likely my first and last visit. read more

Spring/Tomball was in dire need of an authentic Argentinian restaurant. Che Gaucho fulfills that need. From traditional Argentinian sandwiches, grilled steak to delicious desserts. (Argentine croissant, alfajores and gelato) They offer a wide variety of options for every palate. Alicia and her family moved to Tomball in 1995 from Argentina. Her brother in law and nephew started selling empanadas around town. They finally decided to open Che Gaucho in February 2017. I am certainly glad they took the plunge. The food is delicious and affordable. It's a perfect place for date night or family dinner. When you decide to visit make sure to try the salteña, (An empanada filled with ground beef, potato, egg, olives, onion and bell peppers) the lomito (traditional Argentinian grilled steak sandwich) and to top it off an alfajor or two accompanied with some kombucha. We really had no idea what to expect coming here. We sat outside in which they have two tables. They brought out this cold bread which was really good and different. They had three oil/spice containers labeled no spice, mild, and spicy. I liked the mild and boyfriend said the spicy was super good (he ate all of it). I ordered a Hawaiian empanada which had melted cheese with ham and pineapple. It was a 5/10. My boyfriend got the chipotle chicken empanada and he said it was a 9/10. He said it was so good and wasn't too spicy. I ordered a 10" pineapple pizza and it was pretty amazing. The bread they used was super soft and doughy, layered with mozzarella and cheese topped with little pineapple squares per my request. 8/10 for the pizza. My boyfriend ordered the blood orange sausage sandwich and the short rib. The blood orange sausage sandwich came out looking rather interesting and not really like sausage at all. It looked like to massive pinto beans on a sandwich. Boyfriend was incredibly turned off by the sausage so he ended putting the short rib on the sandwich bread which he says was 7.5/10. I tried the blood orange sausage and thought it had a nice taste to it. The texture of the sausage was a little mushy for my liking. We also ordered some dessert. All of their desserts are homemade besides the gelato. Boyfriend got a chocolate banana dolce du leche empanada (i think that's what it was called). He said it was a 9.5/10. I got the strawberry cream gelato and it was the best I've had in a long time. 10/10 for the gelato. Highly recommend. Great staff and service. Only cons are that there were no alcoholic beverages and no fountain drinks. They only have canned soda. I also felt like we didn't have enough napkins the whole time. Other than that, wonderful joint. Will probably go back at some point. read more

We were excited to try this place because of the reviews and the menu so I made us a reservation. (2/11/22 at 7pm). When we got there, there were 3 tables with customers (not packed at all) but only one server. There was one person in line to get a to go other and it took them like 15 minutes to get to her. We are patient people and love supporting small local business, so we continue waiting for someone to sit us. The waitress continued to serve drinks and not even turn to us to sit us!!! When we first came in, she acknowledged us and said, I'll be with you in a minute. But 20 mins went by and she did not even sit us!!! We saw our table with the "reserved" sign. We understand if she was new or alone and overwhelmed, but she could of at least sat us and bring glasses for the wine we brought, we could have been happy to wait longer. After 20-something minutes, we decided to leave. We found this service/lack of attention unacceptable. Not sure if we will even give it another chance. read more

Che Gaucho is legit. I finally convinced my wife to try Che Gaucho and I, and she, are glad that I did. We tried the saltena, Italian, ham and cheese, and chili cheese hotdog empanadas and all of them were great. The empanada dough was flaky and crisp and the fillings were packed with flavor and weren't greasy. They were the best Argentinian empanadas that I have ever had. My wife had the chicken milanesa sandwich and loved it; the chicken was seasoned perfectly. The only empanadas that I weren't overwhelmed with were the apple and banana ones. They were good, but weren't holy-s@$t-good. We also had the Argentinian potato salad and lattes. The salad was good (and interesting) and the coffee was superb. I would go back just for the coffee. This was....interesting. just about everything we tried (and we tried a lot) was fried. It was definitely not a healthy meal, needless to say. I thought the pictures on the were a bit deceiving. Everything was shown as the same size, yet some things were quite substantial, while others were very small. I'd suggest you let the price be your guide. Higher cost = bigger. Lower cost = smaller. The ambiance was like a small cafe. I did like the wall alongside the dining area that had many pictures of their country. The service was not bad. There was one guy at the counter, and it looked like one guy in the back, doing the cooking. Their drink options are not typical, either. The nice thing is, if you don't know what something tastes like, just ask and they'll give you a sample. :-) our kids liked the passion fruit juice, FYI. The food tasted good, generally speaking. My kids were unfamiliar with the food, so they didn't want to jump right in. They ended up eating pretty well. It is a unique experience. Worth a try, at least once. I can't give them a bad rating just because I wasn't the biggest fan of their food. I am just more of a Mexican food kind of guy. read more

Then for my dinner I had the skirt steak and fries (Im a sucker for steak fries) The steak was so juicy and full of flavor! I didnt even need the chimichurri that comes to the table with a bread basket but adding it just takes the meat to a whole nother level. I ordered some empanadas to go. Wonderful little shop on edge of Tomball main street. Easy to miss driving by and don't let the outside fool you. Menu is simple and not complex, food was simply wonderful.
